What Has Changed in Computer Organization and Architecture

The Computer Organization and Architecture section has seen a structural revision. The updated syllabus now splits CPU design into two distinct sections, hardwired control design and microprogrammed control design, giving candidates a clearer breakdown of how processor control units are studied. Cache memory mapping concepts have also been added as a specific topic within this section.

To balance the additional content, direct mentions of main memory and secondary storage devices have been removed from this section, allowing candidates to focus their preparation time on core CPU hardware mechanics rather than general storage device descriptions.

What Has Been Removed From Computer Networks

Computer Networks has seen the most significant reduction in this revision. The following topics have been removed from the GATE CS 2027 syllabus:

• The OSI model layered stack as a standalone topic
• Basics of IP support protocols, including ARP, DHCP and ICMP

The Application Layer section has also been narrowed considerably. Instead of covering the full range of application layer protocols, the revised syllabus now focuses only on DNS and HTTP, making this one of the more condensed sections in the updated syllabus.

• Programming and Data Structures
• Operating Systems
• Database Management Systems
• Theory of Computation

How Aspirants Should Adjust Their Preparation

• Revisit Computer Organization notes and specifically study hardwired and microprogrammed control design as separate concepts
• Add cache memory mapping techniques such as direct mapping, associative mapping and set associative mapping to revision lists
• Stop spending preparation time on OSI model layer‑by‑layer questions and IP support protocols like ARP, DHCP and ICMP, since these are no longer part of the syllabus
• Focus Application Layer preparation specifically on DNS and HTTP rather than the full protocol suite
• Keep Algorithms, Programming and Data Structures, Operating Systems, DBMS and Theory of Computation preparation unchanged, since these carry the same weightage as before
