The GATE DA application process is entirely online and follows a well-defined sequence. While the process itself is straightforward, many candidates make avoidable errors during each stage — wrong document formats, mismatched names, incorrect category selection, or missing the correction window — that result in application rejection or complications on exam day. Getting the application right the first time is far better than relying on the correction window to fix mistakes.
This page walks through every step of the GATE DA application process in detail, from pre-application eligibility check to admit card download, with specific attention to documents required, fee structure, common mistakes, and what to do if errors occur after submission.
Before applying, confirm eligibility by visiting the GATE DA Eligibility Criteria page. For the complete exam guide, visit the GATE DA Complete Guide.

Completing this checklist before opening the GOAPS portal saves time and prevents incomplete applications.
Documents to prepare:
Information to keep ready:
The first action on the GOAPS portal is to create a new account. Candidates who appeared in a previous GATE exam cycle may or may not be able to reuse their existing GOAPS credentials — check the current year's official instructions.
Registration fields:
After submitting the registration form, a verification email is sent to the registered email ID. The candidate must click the activation link in that email within the time limit specified on the portal. Without activation, the account cannot be used.
Critical advice: Use a personal email ID that the candidate owns and actively checks. Do not use a college email ID (which may be deactivated after graduation), a shared email account, or a temporary email service. All GATE communications including admit card links, result notifications, and scorecard availability notices are sent to this email ID.
Save the registration email ID and password in a secure location. They will be needed repeatedly over the next several months.
After registration, log in with the new credentials. The application form is organized into sections that must be completed in order.
Fill in all personal information carefully.
Full Name: Enter exactly as it appears on the photo ID that will be carried to the exam. This includes exactly how initials, surnames, and given names are arranged. Even minor differences (full name vs. initials, space differences) can create identity verification issues at the exam center.
Date of Birth: Enter as per the official document (Class 10 certificate or passport). Do not use informal date formats.
Gender: Select correctly. Female candidates receive a reduced application fee regardless of other category.
Category: Select the category carefully.
Note on category selection: Category cannot be changed from reserved to General after the application is submitted (since the fee already collected would be insufficient). Changing from General to reserved may be possible during the correction window with payment of fee difference or refund as applicable.
Nationality: Indian for most candidates. Select the appropriate country for eligible international candidates.
This section requires details about the qualifying degree.
Qualifying Degree: Select from the dropdown list. The options correspond to the eligibility categories (B.E./B.Tech, B.S. Research, M.Sc., MCA, Integrated programs, etc.). Select the category that most accurately describes the qualifying degree.
Discipline / Branch: Select or type the specific branch — Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, etc.
Institution Name: Enter the full name of the college or university. If the institution is in the GOAPS database, it will appear as a suggestion.
State of Institution: Select the state where the institution is located.
Year of Qualifying Degree:
CGPA or Percentage: Enter the current CGPA or percentage in the qualifying degree. For candidates with CGPA, note whether to enter on a 10-point or 4-point scale as specified on the portal.
Enrollment / Roll Number at Institution: The unique identifier assigned by the institution. This is typically the university roll number, enrollment number, or registration number.
Select the GATE paper to be attempted. For Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, select:
Paper Code: DA — Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
GATE 2027 allows candidates to appear for two papers simultaneously if the combination is in the officially permitted list. If opting for two papers, select the primary paper (DA) and the secondary paper. An additional fee applies for the second paper. Check the official notification for the permitted two-paper combinations in the current exam year.
Select three exam city preferences in order of priority. The GATE committee assigns a test center in or near one of the preferred cities based on seat availability.
How to choose city preferences:
Important: The assigned test center city cannot be guaranteed to match the first preference. The actual test center details (name and address) are mentioned on the admit card released in January. Once the exam center is assigned, it is not changed under normal circumstances.
Document upload is the step where most application errors occur. Follow the specifications exactly.
| Requirement Specification | |
| Format | JPEG only |
| Dimensions | As specified on portal (typically around 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm at 200 dpi or equivalent pixel dimensions) |

| Recency | Photograph taken within the last 6 months |
| Name and date printed | Some portals require the candidate's name and date to be printed at the bottom of the photo — check portal instructions |
Most common rejection reason: Photograph with a blue studio gradient background. Always use a plain white background.

After successful payment:
Critical point: Application fees are non-refundable under all circumstances, including if the application is later rejected due to eligibility issues or document problems. This makes reviewing all details before payment essential.
Before clicking Submit:
After submission:
A correction window is opened every November, typically for 5 to 7 days. During this window, candidates can modify certain fields in the application that were filled incorrectly.
Candidates who realize they made a significant error in the application should act immediately when the correction window opens. After the correction window closes, no further changes are permitted under any circumstances.
The GATE DA admit card is made available for download on the official GOAPS portal in January each year.
How to download:
What to verify on the admit card:
If any discrepancy is found, contact the GATE helpdesk immediately using the contact information on the official portal. The admit card should be printed and kept ready at least 3 to 4 days before the exam, not on the morning of the exam.
For what to carry, rules at the test center, and exam day strategy, visit the GATE DA Exam Day Guidance page.
Mistake 1: Name does not match photo ID The name on the application and on the photo ID taken to the exam must match exactly. Even differences like "Ramesh Kumar" vs "R. Kumar" or "Priya Sharma" vs "Priya S." can cause entry issues at the test center. Use the full name exactly as it appears on Aadhaar or PAN.
Mistake 2: Photograph with colored background The GOAPS system may not automatically reject photographs with incorrect backgrounds, but the application processing team may flag them later. Use strictly white or off-white backgrounds.
Mistake 3: Uploading a previous year's OBC-NCL or EWS certificate OBC-NCL and EWS certificates must be from the current year. Certificates from previous years are not accepted. Obtain fresh certificates before the application window opens.
Mistake 4: Selecting the wrong GATE paper Once submitted, the paper selection generally cannot be changed. Confirm the selection is DA (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) before fee payment.
Mistake 5: Using college email ID for registration College email IDs are often deactivated after graduation. All GATE communications including the admit card download link and result notification come to the registered email. Use a personal Gmail or similar email that the candidate controls long-term.
Mistake 6: Not saving the application number After submission, the application number is the only access key to the portal until the admit card login. Candidates who lose this number face delays in retrieving access. Write it down and store it in multiple places.
Mistake 7: Paying the fee before uploading documents Once the fee is paid, the application is locked from major modifications until the correction window. Documents should be uploaded and carefully verified before proceeding to fee payment.
With the application complete, the window between application (September) and the exam (February) is the most critical preparation period of the entire GATE DA cycle. This window of approximately 4 to 5 months is when the most impactful preparation happens.
Syllabus coverage: Use the complete topic list from the GATE DA Syllabus to plan a study schedule. Track completion of every topic using the GATE DA Syllabus Tracker, which gives a visual overview of how much of the syllabus is covered and what remains.
PYQ practice: After completing each topic, immediately solve all tagged PYQs from the GATE DA PYQ Master Bank. Year-wise access is at 2024, 2025, and 2026.
Mock testing: Enroll in the GATE DA Test Series on AspirantMitraa. Start with topic-wise tests as soon as each subject is completed. Begin full-length mocks at least 3 months before the exam and take one mock every 7 to 10 days with thorough analysis after each.
Score targeting: Know what GATE Score is required for the target program or PSU from the GATE DA Cutoff page. Use mock test scores to track whether preparation is on pace.
Q. Can the GATE paper be changed from DA to another paper after submission? Generally no. Paper selection cannot be changed after submission. In some years, the correction window allows paper changes — check the current year's official notification.
Q. Is there a late application option? Some years, GATE opens a late application window after the regular deadline with an additional late fee. Whether this applies in a given year is announced in the official notification.
Q. Can two candidates from the same household register with the same email ID? No. Each GATE application requires a unique email ID. Two different candidates must use separate email IDs.
Q. What if the admit card photo is unclear? Contact the GATE helpdesk immediately using the contact information on the official portal. The organizing institute has a process for handling unclear admit card photographs.
Q. What documents need to be carried to the exam center? The printed admit card on A4 paper and the original photo ID whose number matches the information submitted in the application. A passport-size photograph may also be required at some centers. Full details are on the GATE DA Exam Day Guidance page.
Q. Can the application fee be refunded if the application is rejected? No. The application fee is non-refundable under all circumstances.
More questions are answered on the GATE DA FAQ page.
The GATE DA application process has eight key stages: eligibility check, GOAPS registration, form filling, document upload, fee payment, submission and confirmation, correction window (if needed), and admit card download. The application is entirely online, opens in September, and closes in late October. The fee is Rs. 1,800 for General/OBC/EWS male candidates and Rs. 900 for SC/ST/PwD/Female candidates.
After applying, the preparation window from October to February is the most impactful phase. Use the GATE DA Syllabus and GATE DA Syllabus Tracker for structured coverage, practice with the GATE DA PYQ bank, and take regular mock tests through the GATE DA Test Series.
