The SSC CHSL eligibility criteria define the minimum conditions every candidate must satisfy before applying for the Combined Higher Secondary Level Examination. The Staff Selection Commission enforces these conditions strictly at every stage of the selection process, from application to document verification. Candidates who apply under incorrect assumptions about their age, qualification, or category certificate risk disqualification even after clearing both Tier 1 and Tier 2, forfeiting all preparation effort.
This page covers the complete official eligibility framework for SSC CHSL 2026, sourced from the SSC CHSL 2025 notification (the most recent official reference) and established SSC eligibility conventions. The 2026 notification is expected in May 2026 at ssc.gov.in and will confirm or update these criteria.

Candidates must satisfy one of the following nationality conditions to be eligible for SSC CHSL 2026:
Candidates from Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, or any of the above-mentioned countries must produce an Eligibility Certificate issued by the Government of India. Without the eligibility certificate, their selection will not be confirmed even if they clear the exam.
The minimum educational qualification for SSC CHSL varies by post. Getting this right before applying is critical because applying for a post for which you do not meet the educational criteria leads to disqualification at document verification.
| Post Department Educational Qualification | ||
| Lower Division Clerk (LDC) | Various Central Ministries and Departments | 12th Standard pass (any stream) from a recognised board |
| Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) | Parliamentary and other offices | 12th Standard pass (any stream) from a recognised board |
| Postal Assistant (PA) | Department of Posts | 12th Standard pass (any stream) from a recognised board |
| Sorting Assistant (SA) | Department of Posts | 12th Standard pass (any stream) from a recognised board |
| Data Entry Operator (DEO) | Ministry of Finance and various other departments | 12th Standard pass in Science stream with Mathematics as a compulsory subject |
| DEO Grade A | Office of Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG), Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ministry of Culture, Staff Selection Commission | 12th Standard pass in Science stream with Mathematics as a compulsory subject |
For those applying to the roles of Data Entry Operator (DEO) or DEO Grade A specifically in departments such as the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG), the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and the Ministry of Culture, it is mandatory to have passed the 12th standard from a recognised board with a science stream that includes Mathematics as a subject.
This is one of the most common eligibility errors in SSC CHSL applications. Candidates who passed Class 12 in Arts or Commerce, or in Science without Mathematics as a compulsory subject, are not eligible for DEO and DEO Grade A posts. They can apply only for LDC, JSA, PA, and SA posts. Selecting DEO despite being ineligible leads to disqualification at document verification.
Recognised boards: The Class 12 certificate must be from a Central or State Board recognised by the Government of India. Certificates from boards with disputed recognition status are not accepted.
Crucial date for qualification: The educational qualification must be possessed by the crucial date specified in the official notification. For the SSC CHSL 2025 cycle, this was January 1, 2026. Candidates who are appearing for their 12th-grade exams may be provisionally eligible to apply, but they must possess the passing certificate by this crucial date to be considered for selection.
Distance education: Class 12 certificates from distance or correspondence programmes are valid if the board or institution is recognised by the Central or State Government.
Marks requirement: There is no minimum percentage requirement in Class 12 for any SSC CHSL post. Candidates who passed in any division (Pass, Third, Second, or First) are eligible.
| Post Minimum Age Maximum Age (UR) | ||
| LDC | 18 years | 27 years |
| JSA | 18 years | 27 years |
| PA / SA | 18 years | 27 years |
| DEO | 18 years | 27 years |
| DEO Grade A | 18 years | 27 years |
All SSC CHSL posts carry the same age range of 18 to 27 years for the Unreserved (General) category. The minimum age required to apply for SSC CHSL posts is 18 years. The maximum age limit is 27 years for most of the posts. Candidates must not be younger than 18 years or older than 27 years as of the cut-off date mentioned in the official notification.
The age is reckoned as of the crucial date specified in the notification, which is typically January 1 of the examination year. For SSC CHSL 2026, the crucial date is expected to be January 1, 2026. Based on this date:
| Category Must Be Born Not Before Must Be Born Not After | ||
| Unreserved (UR) | January 2, 1999 | January 1, 2008 |
| OBC (3 years relaxation) | January 2, 1996 | January 1, 2008 |
| SC/ST (5 years relaxation) | January 2, 1994 | January 1, 2008 |
| PwBD UR (10 years) | January 2, 1989 | January 1, 2008 |
| PwBD OBC (13 years) | January 2, 1986 | January 1, 2008 |
| PwBD SC/ST (15 years) | January 2, 1984 | January 1, 2008 |
Verify the exact crucial date in the official 2026 notification before calculating eligibility.
The Government of India provides age relaxation to candidates from reserved and special categories. The relaxation is applied to the upper age limit.
| Category Age Relaxation Effective Upper Limit | ||
| Scheduled Caste (SC) | 5 years | 32 years |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 5 years | 32 years |
| Other Backward Classes (OBC, Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 years | 30 years |
| Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwBD) - UR | 10 years | 37 years |
| PwBD - OBC | 13 years | 40 years |
| PwBD - SC/ST | 15 years | 42 years |
| Ex-Servicemen (ESM) | 3 years after deducting military service from actual age | Varies |
| Central Government Civilian Employees (UR) | Up to 40 years | 40 years |
| Central Government Civilian Employees (OBC) | Up to 43 years | 43 years |
| Central Government Civilian Employees (SC/ST) | Up to 45 years | 45 years |
| Widows/Divorced Women/Women Judicially Separated (UR) | Up to 35 years | 35 years |
| Widows/Divorced Women (OBC) | Up to 38 years | 38 years |
| Widows/Divorced Women (SC/ST) | Up to 40 years | 40 years |
Age relaxation criteria for reserved categories for SSC CHSL: 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC, 10 years for PwD (UR), 13 years for PwD OBC, and 15 years for PwD SC/ST.
OBC-NCL requirement: OBC candidates must belong to the Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) to claim OBC age relaxation. The NCL certificate must be in the Central Government format. State Government format certificates are not accepted. The certificate must have been issued within one year of the application closing date.
ESM age calculation: As per the SSC CHSL eligibility criteria, former servicemen have 3 years after deduction of the military service rendered from the actual age on the closing date of receipt of online application. For example, if a General category ESM candidate is 32 years old at the application closing date and has served 7 years in the armed forces, their adjusted age is 32 minus 7 = 25 years. Adding 3 years gives 28, which exceeds the standard limit of 27, so this candidate would not be eligible unless they belong to a reserved category with higher relaxation.
PwBD candidates: The disability must be at least 40 percent and must be certified by a competent government medical authority. The nature of disability must be compatible with the duties of the post applied for.
Physical standards are not required for most SSC CHSL posts. The only exception is the LDC post in the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which requires candidates to meet specific physical and medical standards including a Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and a Medical Examination.
Physical standards apply only for LDC in BRO, including a Physical Efficiency Test and Medical Exam.
Candidates applying specifically for BRO LDC vacancies must ensure they are physically fit for field duty. Candidates who are medically unfit for the BRO post may still be considered for LDC vacancies in other departments, subject to availability.
Candidates with benchmark disabilities (PwBD) are eligible to apply for SSC CHSL posts subject to the compatibility of their disability with the job requirements. The SSC notification specifies which types of disability are permissible for each post category.
| Disability Type Permissibility | |
| Visual Impairment (VI) | Permitted for most posts with reasonable accommodation |
| Hearing Impairment (HI) | Permitted for most posts |
| Orthopaedically Challenged (OC) | Permitted subject to post-specific conditions |
| Multiple Disabilities | Permitted subject to notification specifications |
Compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour of the exam is given to candidates using a scribe or eligible for one but choosing to write independently. This means PwBD candidates eligible for a scribe receive an additional 20 minutes in the 60-minute Tier 1 exam, giving them 80 minutes total.
SSC CHSL does not impose a limit on the number of times a candidate can appear. No fixed attempt limit; candidates can apply until they cross the age limit. A General category candidate who first applies at age 18 can theoretically appear in every annual CHSL cycle until they reach 27, giving approximately 10 attempts. Reserved category candidates with relaxed age limits have proportionally more attempts.
Applying for DEO without Science and Mathematics background: This is the most common mistake in SSC CHSL applications. DEO and DEO Grade A posts require 12th in Science with Mathematics. Candidates without this background should not select DEO posts. Applications that are found ineligible at document verification are rejected regardless of exam performance.
Claiming OBC relaxation without a Non-Creamy Layer certificate: OBC reservation benefits apply only to Non-Creamy Layer candidates. If your family income exceeds the NCL threshold, you are in the Creamy Layer and must apply as General category.
Using a State Government format OBC certificate: SSC requires OBC-NCL certificates in the Central Government prescribed format. State Government format certificates are not accepted for Central Government recruitment.
Misreading the crucial date: Age is calculated as of the crucial date in the notification, not the application date or exam date. A candidate who will turn 28 before the crucial date is ineligible even if they are 27 at the time of applying.
Submitting a Class 12 mark sheet instead of the pass certificate: At document verification, SSC requires the actual Class 12 pass certificate issued by the board, not just the marksheet. If you have not received your original certificate, apply for a duplicate from your board well in advance.
Not verifying board recognition: Class 12 certificates from institutions not recognised by the Central or State Government are invalid. Verify your board's recognition status on the Ministry of Education website if there is any doubt.
After clearing both Tier 1 and Tier 2, candidates are called for document verification by the concerned department. The following documents must be produced in original along with one self-attested photocopy:
| Document Purpose | |
| Class 10 Certificate and Marksheet | Date of birth proof |
| Class 12 Certificate and Marksheet | Qualification proof |
| SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwBD Certificate | Category claim verification |
| OBC Non-Creamy Layer Certificate (Central Govt. format) | OBC eligibility |
| ESM Discharge Certificate | For Ex-Servicemen |
| Eligibility Certificate | For non-Indian nationals |
| Valid Photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, Passport) | Identity verification |
| No Objection Certificate | If currently employed in government/PSU |
| Character Certificate | From a Gazetted Officer or school/college head |
| Passport-size Photographs | As specified by the department |
Before filling the application form, work through this checklist to confirm eligibility.
| Step Condition to Verify | |
| 1 | Are you an Indian citizen or eligible non-citizen? |
| 2 | Have you passed Class 12 from a recognised board? |
| 3 | If applying for DEO/DEO Grade A: Did you pass Class 12 in Science with Mathematics? |
| 4 | Is your Class 12 result declared before the crucial date in the notification? |
| 5 | Have you calculated your age against the crucial date (not application date)? |
| 6 | Does your calculated age fall within 18 to 27 years (UR) or the relaxed limit for your category? |
| 7 | If claiming OBC: Do you have a valid NCL certificate in Central Government format? |
| 8 | If claiming PwBD: Is your disability certificate in the prescribed format with 40% or above disability? |
| 9 | If claiming ESM: Is your discharge certificate ready and has your adjusted age been calculated correctly? |
| 10 | Are all your documents original and available for production at document verification? |
Can a graduate apply for SSC CHSL 2026? Yes. A graduate can easily apply for the SSC CHSL examination. Having a graduation degree does not disqualify a candidate from SSC CHSL. The minimum is Class 12; graduates are welcome to apply.
Can final-year Class 12 students apply? Yes, provisionally. Candidates who are appearing for their 12th-grade exams may be provisionally eligible to apply, but they must possess the passing certificate by the crucial date specified in the official notification to be considered for selection.
What is the maximum age for SSC CHSL? The maximum age limit is 27 years for most of the posts. Age relaxation applies for reserved categories.
Is there any age relaxation for women? SC, ST, PwD, and female candidates are exempted from paying the application fee. However, there is no specific age relaxation for women who are in the General category, other than for widows, divorced women, and women judicially separated from their husbands. Women in SC/ST/OBC categories receive the standard category-based relaxation.
Does SSC CHSL require any prior work experience? No. SSC CHSL is an entry-level recruitment; prior work experience is neither required nor considered in the selection process.
