The Staff Selection Commission Combined Higher Secondary Level examination, commonly known as SSC CHSL, is one of the most sought-after government recruitment examinations for candidates who have passed Class 12. Conducted annually by the Staff Selection Commission, SSC CHSL recruits candidates for clerical, postal, sorting, and data entry posts across central government ministries, departments, and offices. The posts filled through this examination include Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA), Postal Assistant (PA), Sorting Assistant (SA), and Data Entry Operator (DEO).
For the 2026 cycle, the SSC CHSL notification was originally scheduled for April 30, 2026, but was delayed by a few days due to administrative reasons. It is now expected in May 2026 at ssc.gov.in. As per the official SSC Annual Exam Calendar 2026-27, the Tier 1 examination is scheduled between July and September 2026. Expected vacancies range between 4,000 and 6,000 posts based on the five-year vacancy trend.

SSC CHSL stands for Staff Selection Commission Combined Higher Secondary Level Examination. The word "Higher Secondary" in the name directly identifies the target group: candidates who have passed Class 12 or 10+2 from a recognised board. Unlike SSC CGL, which requires a graduation degree, SSC CHSL is accessible immediately after Class 12, making it one of the earliest pathways into a central government career for young aspirants.
The posts filled through SSC CHSL are permanent central government positions classified under Group C (non-gazetted, non-ministerial). They offer structured career progression, job security, Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, annual increments, medical benefits, and pension under the National Pension System.
SSC CHSL is also significantly less competitive than SSC CGL in terms of the difficulty level of the examination, though the large number of applicants makes the race for posts extremely tight near the cutoff. The Tier 1 exam is qualifying in nature; its marks are not counted in the final merit list. Final selection is based entirely on Tier 2 performance.
The SSC Annual Exam Calendar 2026-27 confirms the following schedule. The notification was originally planned for April 30, 2026, but has been delayed.

The Tier 1 examination is a Computer-Based Test (CBT) with four sections. There is no sectional time limit; the full 60-minute duration applies to all 100 questions.
| Section Questions Marks Time | |||
| General Intelligence and Reasoning | 25 | 50 | -- |
| General Awareness | 25 | 50 | -- |
| Quantitative Aptitude (Basic Arithmetic Skill) | 25 | 50 | -- |
| English Language and Comprehension | 25 | 50 | -- |
| Total | 100 | 200 | 60 minutes |
No sectional time limit: Candidates can move freely between sections throughout the 60-minute duration. This is a significant strategic advantage compared to IBPS PO Prelims, where sections are time-locked.
Negative marking: 0.50 marks (half a mark) are deducted for each wrong answer. Since each question carries 2 marks, the effective penalty per wrong answer is 25 percent of the question's value.
Normalisation applied: The exam is conducted in multiple shifts. SSC applies normalisation to produce comparable scores across shifts of different difficulty levels.
Tier 1 is qualifying only: Tier 1 marks are not included in the final merit list. Only the Tier 2 score determines final selection and post allocation. However, the Tier 1 cutoff has been consistently competitive, particularly for DEO posts.
Bilingual exam: Available in both Hindi and English, except the English Language section, which is in English only.
This section tests logical thinking, pattern recognition, and both verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Topics include Analogies, Series (Number and Alphabetical), Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Direction Sense, Syllogism, Classification, Venn Diagrams, Statement and Conclusion, Non-verbal reasoning (Mirror Images, Paper Folding, Embedded Figures), and Mathematical Operations.
General Awareness covers History, Geography, Indian Polity, Economics, Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), Computer Literacy, Current Affairs from the preceding 6 to 8 months, and Static GK including Awards, Sports, Books and Authors, Important Days, and Government Schemes.
The Mathematics section is based on Class 10 standard. Topics include Number System, Percentage, Ratio and Proportion, Profit/Loss and Discount, Simple and Compound Interest, Time and Work, Speed-Distance-Time, Geometry, Mensuration, Trigonometry, Algebra, Data Interpretation, and Statistics.
English covers Vocabulary (Synonyms, Antonyms, One-word Substitution, Idioms and Phrases), Grammar (Error Spotting, Fill in the Blanks, Sentence Improvement), Reading Comprehension, Cloze Test, and Para Jumbles.

SSC CHSL recruits for four main post categories across central government departments. Vacancies for 2026 will be announced in the official notification. Based on the five-year trend, 4,000 to 6,000 total vacancies are expected.
The SSC CHSL 2025 Tier 1 exam was conducted from November 12 to 30, 2025. A total of 37,520 candidates were shortlisted for Tier 2 based on the Tier 1 cutoff released on February 27, 2026.
| Post Full Name Typical Department Pay Level | |||
| LDC | Lower Division Clerk | Various Central Ministries/Departments | Level 2 (Rs 19,900) |
| JSA | Junior Secretariat Assistant | Parliament/Other Offices | Level 2 (Rs 19,900) |
| PA | Postal Assistant | Department of Posts | Level 4 (Rs 25,500) |
| SA | Sorting Assistant | Department of Posts | Level 4 (Rs 25,500) |
| DEO | Data Entry Operator | Various Ministries | Level 4 (Rs 25,500) |
| DEO Grade A | Data Entry Operator Grade A | Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Culture, SSC | Level 4 (Rs 25,500) |
| Exam Year Total Vacancies | |
| CHSL 2025 | To be confirmed in 2026 |
| CHSL 2024 | Approximately 3,712 |
| CHSL 2023 | 1,369 |
| CHSL 2022 | 4,500 |
| CHSL 2021 | 4,726 |
Expected vacancies for 2026 are 4,000 to 6,000 based on the historical range and departmental requirements.
Candidates must be Indian citizens. Subjects of Nepal, Bhutan, Tibetan refugees who settled before January 1, 1962, and persons of Indian origin from specified countries are eligible under prescribed conditions.
| Post Minimum Qualification | |
| LDC / JSA | Class 12 pass (10+2 or equivalent) from a recognised board |
| PA / SA | Class 12 pass (10+2 or equivalent) from a recognised board |
| DEO | Class 12 pass in Science stream with Mathematics as a compulsory subject |
| DEO Grade A (Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Culture, SSC) | Same as DEO: 12th in Science with Mathematics |
A common eligibility error occurs with DEO posts. Candidates who passed Class 12 in Arts or Commerce without Mathematics cannot apply for DEO/DEO Grade A posts, even though they meet the Class 12 qualification requirement for other posts.
| Category Minimum Age Maximum Age | ||
| LDC / JSA | 18 years | 27 years |
| PA / SA | 18 years | 27 years |
| DEO | 18 years | 27 years |
| DEO Grade A | 18 years | 27 years |
Age relaxation: SC/ST 5 years, OBC 3 years, PwBD (UR) 10 years, PwBD (OBC) 13 years, PwBD (SC/ST) 15 years, Ex-Servicemen as per government rules. The age is calculated as of the cutoff date specified in the notification, which is typically August 1 of the year.
For the complete post-wise eligibility breakdown and age relaxation table, visit the SSC CHSL Eligibility Criteria page.
The selection process for SSC CHSL 2026 consists of two exam stages followed by document verification.
| Stage Nature Marks Contribution to Final Merit | |||
| Tier 1 (CBT) | Qualifying | 200 | Not counted |
| Tier 2 Session 1 (Objective) | Merit-determining | 403 | Yes |
| Tier 2 Session 2 (Skill/Typing Test) | Qualifying | -- | Not counted |
| Document Verification | Mandatory | -- | Not counted |
The Tier 2 examination consists of two sessions:
Session 1 (Objective): Divided into three sections. Section 1: Mathematical Abilities and Reasoning and General Intelligence (2 hours 15 minutes, 360 marks). Section 2: English Language and Comprehension (English only). Section 3 Module 1: Computer Knowledge Test (qualifying).
Session 2 (Skill/Typing Test): For LDC/JSA and Clerk posts, a Typing Skill Test (TST) is conducted on a computer at a speed of 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi. For DEO posts, a Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) requiring 8,000 key depressions per hour is conducted.
The final merit list is based entirely on the Tier 2 Session 1 objective scores. The Typing/Skill Test and Computer Knowledge Test are qualifying in nature.
The SSC CHSL Tier 1 Cut Off 2024 was officially released. Category-wise cutoffs for the two main post groups were:
LDC/JSA Posts:
| Category Cutoff Marks (Normalised, Out of 200) | |
| Unreserved (UR) | 157.36 |
| OBC | 156.62 |
| EWS | 150.52 |
| SC | 139.68 |
| ST | 129.45 |
| Ex-Servicemen (ESM) | 78.23 |
| OH (Orthopaedically Handicapped) | 124.70 |
DEO Posts:
| Category Cutoff Marks (Normalised, Out of 200) | |
| Unreserved (UR) | 176.27 |
| OBC | 176.27 |
| EWS | 176.27 |
| SC | 166.68 |
| ST | 165.08 |
| ESM | 133.94 |
DEO posts have significantly higher cutoffs than LDC/JSA because DEO requires Science stream with Mathematics in Class 12, narrowing the eligible candidate pool while offering a higher pay level.
| Exam Year UR Cutoff LDC/JSA (Out of 200) | |
| 2024 | 157.36 |
| 2023 | 133.11 |
| 2022 | 155.31 |
| 2021 | 157.65 |
The cutoff for LDC/JSA (UR) has ranged from 133 to 157 over the past four cycles. Candidates targeting SSC CHSL 2026 Tier 1 should aim for a normalised score of 165 or above for the UR category to clear the cutoff comfortably.
For complete post-wise and category-wise cutoff data with year-wise comparisons, visit the SSC CHSL Cutoff page.
Many candidates who are eligible for both exams ask how they compare. The table below clarifies the key differences.
| Aspect SSC CHSL SSC CGL | ||
| Minimum Qualification | Class 12 (10+2) | Graduation degree |
| Post Category | Group C | Group B and Group C |
| Pay Level | Level 2 to Level 4 | Level 4 to Level 8 |
| Tier 1 Pattern | 100 Q, 200 marks, 60 min | 100 Q, 200 marks, 60 min |
| Tier 1 Difficulty | Moderate (Class 10-12 level) | Moderate to High |
| Final Merit Stage | Tier 2 | Tier 2 |
| Typing/Skill Test | Yes (for most posts) | Yes (for DEST only) |
| Career Entry Point | Entry-level clerical | Mid-level officer track |
Both exams share a nearly identical Tier 1 structure. Candidates preparing for SSC CGL who are also eligible for SSC CHSL can prepare for both simultaneously, using the same study plan with minor adjustments for the difficulty level.
Unlike IBPS PO which has strict sectional timers, SSC CHSL Tier 1 gives candidates full flexibility to allocate their 60 minutes across four sections. Most high-scoring candidates use a fixed section-order strategy: General Awareness first (fastest, 10 to 12 minutes for 25 questions), then Reasoning (15 to 16 minutes), then English (14 to 15 minutes), then Quantitative Aptitude (last, as it is the most calculation-intensive, 17 to 18 minutes).
Since there is no sectional cutoff in SSC CHSL Tier 1, a candidate theoretically needs only the overall cutoff to qualify. However, a very low score in any one section signals weak preparation that will hurt in the merit-determining Tier 2. All four sections should be given proportionate preparation time.
Based on PYQ analysis across the 2021 to 2025 cycles, the highest-frequency topics are:
The most effective preparation sequence is: study a topic, take a topic-wise test immediately, fix errors, then move to the next topic. Once all topics in a section are covered, take section-wise tests. Only then shift to full mock tests. The Aspirant Mitraa SSC CHSL Tier 1 Test Series provides 400 tests covering topic-wise, subject-wise, and full mock formats, allowing this structured progression from day one of preparation.
Track your syllabus coverage using the SSC CHSL Syllabus Tracker so no topic is left out before the exam.
SSC CHSL Tier 1 deducts 0.50 marks (on a 2-mark question) for each wrong answer. This is equivalent to a 25 percent penalty per wrong answer. Candidates should avoid guessing on questions where they have no idea; disciplined accuracy produces better outcomes than maximum attempt counts in an exam with this penalty structure.
PYQs from the 2022 to 2025 cycles reflect the current exam pattern and difficulty. Solving 8 to 10 full papers under timed conditions (60 minutes strictly) calibrates preparation accurately. Access previous year question papers from the SSC CHSL PYQ page.
SSC CHSL applications are accepted online only at ssc.gov.in. The process uses the same One-Time Registration (OTR) system as SSC CGL. Candidates who have previously registered for any SSC exam can use the same credentials.
The application fee is Rs 100 for General and OBC male candidates. Women, SC, ST, PwBD, and ESM candidates are exempted from the fee.
For step-by-step application guidance including document upload specifications and post preference selection, visit the SSC CHSL Application Process page.
Understanding the job profile motivates preparation and helps candidates make informed post-preference decisions.
| Post Basic Pay Gross Salary (Approx.) Job Profile | |||
| LDC | Rs 19,900 | Rs 28,000 to Rs 34,000 | File management, correspondence, general administration |
| JSA | Rs 19,900 | Rs 28,000 to Rs 34,000 | Secretariat assistance, Parliament-related work |
| PA/SA | Rs 25,500 | Rs 35,000 to Rs 43,000 | Post office operations, mail sorting, customer service |
| DEO | Rs 25,500 | Rs 35,000 to Rs 43,000 | Data entry on government portals and systems |
All posts offer annual increments, promotion pathways to LDC to UDC (Upper Division Clerk) and beyond, and the full range of central government benefits.
Based on the 2021 to 2024 cutoff trends:
| Category Historical Cutoff Range (LDC/JSA) Safe Target Score Competitive Score | |||
| UR | 133 to 157 | 165 to 170 | Above 175 |
| OBC | 130 to 157 | 162 to 167 | Above 172 |
| EWS | 128 to 151 | 158 to 163 | Above 168 |
| SC | 118 to 140 | 148 to 155 | Above 160 |
| ST | 110 to 130 | 138 to 145 | Above 152 |
For DEO posts, the cutoff is consistently higher (UR: 176.27 in 2024). Candidates applying specifically for DEO must target 180 or above in full mock tests.
What is the exam date for SSC CHSL Tier 1 2026? As per the SSC Annual Exam Calendar 2026-27, the Tier 1 exam is scheduled between July and September 2026. The notification (delayed from April 30) is expected in May 2026.
Is the Tier 1 score counted in final merit? No. Tier 1 is purely qualifying. Only the Tier 2 Session 1 objective score determines the final merit list.
What is the negative marking in SSC CHSL Tier 1? 0.50 marks are deducted for each wrong answer. Each question carries 2 marks, so a wrong answer results in a net loss of 2.50 marks relative to a correct answer.
Is there sectional timing in SSC CHSL Tier 1? No. The full 60-minute duration applies to all 100 questions. Candidates can move freely between sections.
Can Class 12 students in their final year apply? Yes, provided their result is declared before the document verification stage. SSC CHSL typically specifies a qualification-by date in the notification.
What is the difference between LDC and DEO eligibility? LDC requires Class 12 from any stream. DEO requires Class 12 specifically in the Science stream with Mathematics as a compulsory subject.
