Three types of questions appear in the GATE CS paper. Each type has a different marking rule, and understanding this is essential for deciding your attempt strategy.
Each MCQ has four answer options, and only one is correct. MCQs carry negative marking. For a 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark is deducted for a wrong answer. For a 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 mark is deducted for a wrong answer.
Strategy tip: Never guess randomly on MCQs. Only attempt them when at least two options can be eliminated confidently.
Each MSQ has four options, and one or more options can be correct. There is no negative marking for MSQs. However, partial marks are not awarded either. The full marks are only given when all correct options are selected and no incorrect option is selected.
Strategy tip: MSQs are tricky because of the all-or-nothing marking. Only attempt them if reasonably confident about all correct options.
NAT questions require candidates to type a numerical answer using the virtual keypad. There are no options given. There is no negative marking for NAT questions.
Strategy tip: Always attempt NAT questions because there is nothing to lose. Even an educated guess is worth trying.
