The LIC AAO examination is the recruitment pathway for the post of Assistant Administrative Officer at the Life Insurance Corporation of India - the country's largest and most trusted life insurer with over 250 million policyholders, assets exceeding Rs. 50 lakh crore, and a branch network spanning every district of India. The AAO (Assistant Administrative Officer) is an entry-level Class-I officer post, equivalent to a Probationary Officer in the banking sector, and is one of the most sought-after insurance sector jobs in India. With a starting basic pay of Rs. 88,635 per month, a gross salary of approximately Rs. 1,26,000 per month in metro cities, and a comprehensive benefits package that includes pension, gratuity, group insurance, LTC, and extensive medical coverage, LIC AAO consistently ranks among the highest-paying entry-level government jobs in India's financial services sector.
The 2025 recruitment cycle announced 841 total vacancies - 350 for AAO Generalist, 410 for AAO Specialist (across multiple streams), and 81 for Assistant Engineer posts. The 2026 notification is expected in August 2026, with Prelims anticipated in October 2026 and Mains in November 2026.
This page covers every essential aspect of the LIC AAO examination - the nature of the role, selection process, exam pattern, eligibility, salary, vacancy trends, cutoff data, and the preparation approach that consistently produces qualifiers.
The Assistant Administrative Officer (AAO) is a Class-I officer who joins LIC at the entry level of the officer cadre. The role spans both administrative and field functions, and depending on the stream, the work involves:
AAO Generalist: Handles all-round insurance operations including policy issuance, claims settlement, premium collection management, branch administration, customer service, and financial accounting. This is the broadest role and the one with the highest vacancy count in most recruitment cycles.
AAO Specialist streams in the 2025 recruitment included:
Assistant Engineer (AE): Technical maintenance of LIC's physical infrastructure (Civil, Electrical, Structural, MEP, and Architectural disciplines).
The AAO Generalist post is the primary focus of most aspirants and forms the bulk of vacancies in every recruitment cycle. For the purpose of exam preparation, this guide focuses primarily on the AAO Generalist stream, with relevant distinctions for other posts noted where applicable.

The LIC AAO selection process has three mandatory stages. Final merit is based on Mains and Interview combined.
Stage 1 - Preliminary Examination (Qualifying): An online objective test of 70 marks completed in 1 hour. Three sections: Reasoning Ability (35 questions, 35 marks), Quantitative Aptitude (35 questions, 35 marks), and English Language (30 questions, 30 marks - qualifying only). Prelims marks are not counted in the final merit list. Prelims shortlists candidates for Mains.
Key feature: No negative marking in LIC AAO Prelims. This is a significant advantage compared to IBPS and SBI examinations where 0.25-mark penalties apply, and fundamentally changes the attempt strategy.
Stage 2 - Main Examination (Merit-determining): An online objective test of 300 marks with four sections (plus a qualifying Descriptive Test in English of 30 marks). The Mains marks determine shortlisting for the interview. Unlike most banking exams, the Mains also includes a Descriptive Test covering essay and letter writing.
Stage 3 - Interview: Candidates who qualify Mains are called for an interview. The final merit list is prepared by combining Mains marks and Interview marks.
Stage 4 - Pre-Recruitment Medical Examination: Selected candidates undergo a medical examination to confirm fitness for the role. Medical clearance is mandatory before final appointment.

No negative marking. This is the most strategically important feature of LIC AAO Prelims. In SBI PO, IBPS PO, and IBPS Clerk, wrong answers cost 0.25 marks each. In LIC AAO Prelims, wrong answers cost nothing. This means a candidate who is unsure about an answer should always attempt it - leaving questions blank is never optimal.
English Language is qualifying only. A minimum qualifying mark in English Language is required (typically around 8 to 10 out of 30), but the English marks are not added to the merit score. The final Prelims merit is calculated out of 70 marks (Reasoning 35 + QA 35).
No sectional time limits (based on 2025 pattern) - the 60 minutes are shared across all three sections. This differs from IBPS and SBI exams where each section has its own timer.

LIC AAO stands out distinctively for its combination of the highest starting salary among all comparable insurance and banking officer-level examinations and the no-negative-marking structure in both Prelims and Mains. For candidates who are strong in core aptitude but anxious about penalty for incorrect answers, LIC AAO is the most forgiving examination format in the insurance and banking officer space.

The LIC AAO salary is one of the strongest arguments for choosing this examination. Under the revised pay scale, it represents the highest gross compensation among all insurance sector entry-level officer positions in India.
Starting Basic Pay: Rs. 88,635 per month
Pay Scale: Rs. 88,635 - 4,385 (14 years) - 1,50,025 - 4,750 (4 years) - 1,69,025
Gross Monthly Salary (Metro - Class A city): Approximately Rs. 1,26,000 per month
In-Hand Monthly Salary: Approximately Rs. 1,07,000 per month (in Class A cities)
Annual Package (Approximate): Rs. 15.12 lakh to Rs. 20.28 lakh depending on city and current DA rates
Additional benefits include:
The pension benefit is particularly significant. LIC follows the old pension scheme (defined benefit pension), unlike post-2004 central government employees and post-2010 bank employees who are under the National Pension System. This means LIC AAO employees are entitled to a guaranteed monthly pension after retirement based on their years of service - a benefit that has enormous long-term financial value and is increasingly rare in new government recruitments.

LIC does not conduct AAO recruitment every year on a fixed annual cycle. Some years see no recruitment, while others have large drives based on LIC's manpower requirements. The 2025 cycle with 841 total vacancies was one of the largest in recent history.
Reasoning Ability: Puzzles and Seating Arrangements, Syllogisms, Inequalities, Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Directions, Alphanumeric Series, Input-Output

LIC AAO Prelims Cutoff (2025, out of 70 marks - merit on Reasoning + QA):
Based on the 2025 cycle where Prelims result was released on 29th October 2025:
LIC AAO cutoffs are zone-wise (not state-wise), with candidates shortlisted for the zone they applied for.
LIC AAO Mains Cutoff (2023, out of 300): The 2023 final cutoff for General category was approximately 259 marks out of a combined Mains + Interview total. Mains-only cutoffs in the 2023 and 2020 cycles were in the 175 to 210 range for General category out of 300.
For complete year-wise cutoff data, visit the LIC AAO Cutoff page.
The absence of negative marking in LIC AAO Prelims fundamentally changes preparation strategy compared to SBI PO or IBPS PO. Since wrong answers carry no penalty, the optimal strategy is to attempt every question regardless of certainty level. Time management - completing all 100 questions within 60 minutes - is the primary challenge, not penalty management.
This means preparation should focus on speed (attempting 100 questions accurately in 60 minutes) rather than the selective-attempt discipline required for IBPS and SBI exams.
Puzzles and DI, which are the highest-difficulty topics in Prelims, should receive the most practice time because they consume the most time per question even when the candidate knows the approach.
The Insurance and Financial Market Awareness section is unique to LIC AAO among all major banking and insurance examinations. Candidates who prepare standard banking exam GK without specifically studying insurance concepts, LIC products, IRDAI regulations, and the Indian insurance industry will score poorly in this section.
Key insurance-specific topics to master:
The qualifying Descriptive Test in Mains requires essay and letter writing skills. Unlike SBI PO's Descriptive Test which is merit-determining, LIC AAO's descriptive component is qualifying - a minimum mark must be secured but the marks are not added to the merit score. However, failure in the descriptive test eliminates a candidate regardless of objective performance.
Practice one essay and one formal letter per week throughout Mains preparation. Focus on professional structure, relevant content, and zero grammatical errors.

Is there negative marking in LIC AAO? No. There is no negative marking in either the Prelims or the Mains of LIC AAO. This is one of the most distinctive features of the examination and significantly changes the optimal attempt strategy - every question should be attempted.
What is the LIC AAO in-hand salary? Approximately Rs. 1,07,000 per month in Class A cities. The gross salary is approximately Rs. 1,26,000 per month in metro cities. LIC AAO offers the highest entry-level salary in the insurance sector and compares favourably even with SBI PO.
Is English Language in LIC AAO Prelims merit-determining? No. The English Language section in Prelims (30 questions, 30 marks) is qualifying only. A minimum score must be achieved but the marks are not added to the Prelims merit score. The merit is calculated out of 70 marks (Reasoning 35 + Quantitative Aptitude 35).
Does LIC AAO have a defined benefit pension? Yes. LIC follows the old pension scheme, providing a guaranteed defined benefit pension after retirement. This is a significant benefit compared to NPS in most post-2004 government and post-2010 bank recruitments.
How often does LIC conduct AAO recruitment? LIC does not conduct AAO recruitment on a strictly annual cycle. Recruitment happens based on manpower requirements. Some years see no recruitment. The 2025 cycle (841 vacancies) came after a gap from the previous large cycle in 2023.
What is the difference between AAO Generalist and Specialist? AAO Generalist handles all-round insurance operations with a broader role. Specialist posts (IT, CA, Actuarial, Rajbhasha, Legal) require specific professional qualifications and handle domain-specific work. The selection process for Specialists uses Professional Knowledge in place of Data Analysis and Interpretation in Mains.
The LIC AAO examination offers one of the most financially rewarding career starts available through a competitive examination in India's financial services sector, with a unique no-negative-marking advantage, a guaranteed pension, and gross earnings that exceed most banking PO positions from day one.
