The RBI Grade B eligibility criteria are among the most specific and strictly enforced of any banking examination in India. Unlike IBPS PO or SBI PO where a graduation degree in any discipline with no minimum percentage suffices, RBI Grade B sets a minimum percentage threshold in the qualifying degree, has an attempt limit, and maintains three separate streams with different qualification requirements. Candidates who do not verify these conditions carefully before applying risk disqualification at the document verification stage despite performing well in both phases and the interview.
This page covers the complete official eligibility framework for all three RBI Grade B 2026 streams: nationality conditions, stream-wise educational qualifications with minimum percentage requirements, age limits, the crucial attempt limit, category-wise age relaxation, and the complete document checklist for verification.
| Parameter General Stream DEPR Stream DSIM Stream | |||
| Minimum Education | Graduation (any discipline) | Post-graduation in Economics/related | Post-graduation in Statistics/related |
| Minimum Marks (UR/EWS/OBC) | 60% in graduation | 55% in post-graduation | 55% in post-graduation |
| Minimum Marks (SC/ST/PwBD) | 50% in graduation | 50% in post-graduation | 50% in post-graduation |
| Minimum Age | 21 years | 21 years | 21 years |
| Maximum Age (UR) | 30 years | 30 years | 30 years |
| Attempt Limit (UR) | 6 attempts | 6 attempts | 6 attempts |
| Application Fee (UR/OBC/EWS) | Rs 850 | Rs 850 | Rs 850 |
| Application Fee (SC/ST/PwBD) | Rs 100 | Rs 100 | Rs 100 |
Candidates must be Indian citizens. Subjects of Nepal and Bhutan, Tibetan refugees who came to India before January 1, 1962, and persons of Indian origin from specified countries (Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Ethiopia, East African countries) are eligible under prescribed conditions with a Certificate of Eligibility from the Government of India.
Minimum Qualification: Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university or equivalent.
Minimum Marks Required:
| Category Minimum Percentage in Graduation | |
| Unreserved (UR) | 60% or equivalent grade |
| EWS | 60% or equivalent grade |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 60% or equivalent grade |
| Scheduled Caste (SC) | 50% or equivalent grade |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 50% or equivalent grade |
| PwBD | 50% or equivalent grade |
This percentage requirement distinguishes RBI Grade B from other banking exams. Candidates who passed graduation in third division or with less than 60% cannot apply for General stream in the UR/OBC/EWS category. Many aspirants discover this condition only after starting preparation, so it is worth verifying early.
Alternative qualification accepted:
Class 10 and Class 12 percentage: No minimum percentage is required in Class 10 or Class 12. Only the graduation percentage matters.
Result must be declared: The graduation result must have been declared before the application closing date (May 20, 2026 for the 2026 cycle).
DEPR recruits economists and policy researchers. The qualification requirements reflect the advanced academic background needed for research and policy work at India's central bank.
Minimum Qualification Options:
| Option Qualification Minimum Marks | ||
| Option 1 | Master's degree in Economics from a recognised university | 55% (UR/EWS/OBC); 50% (SC/ST/PwBD) |
| Option 2 | Master's degree in Economics with graduation in Statistics, Mathematics, or Economics | 55% in both (UR/EWS/OBC) |
| Option 3 | Master's degree in Commerce with specialisation in Economics/Finance | 55% (UR/EWS/OBC) |
Candidates who have studied Economics at the post-graduation level with a strong quantitative background are ideally suited for the DEPR stream. The Phase 2 descriptive papers test graduate school-level economics, including macroeconomic theory, econometrics, and economic policy analysis.
DSIM recruits statisticians and data analysts for India's central bank. The qualification requirements reflect the quantitative and statistical expertise required.
Minimum Qualification Options:
| Option Qualification Minimum Marks | ||
| Option 1 | Master's degree in Statistics from a recognised university | 55% (UR/EWS/OBC); 50% (SC/ST/PwBD) |
| Option 2 | Master's degree in Mathematical Statistics | 55% (UR/EWS/OBC) |
| Option 3 | Master's degree in Mathematical Economics | 55% (UR/EWS/OBC) |
| Option 4 | Master's degree in Econometrics | 55% (UR/EWS/OBC) |
| Option 5 | Master's degree in Statistics and Informatics | 55% (UR/EWS/OBC) |
| Option 6 | Master's degree in Applied Statistics and Informatics | 55% (UR/EWS/OBC) |
| Post Minimum Age Maximum Age (UR) | ||
| All three streams (General, DEPR, DSIM) | 21 years | 30 years |
The age is calculated as of the reference date specified in the notification. For the 2026 cycle, the reference date is expected to be stated in the official notification released April 29, 2026. Candidates typically need to not have been born earlier than a specific date (for the upper limit) and not later than another date (for the minimum).
For the 2026 application closing date of May 20, 2026, candidates aged between 21 and 30 years as of a reference date (confirmed in the notification) are eligible.
| Category Relaxation Effective Upper Age | ||
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 years | 33 years |
| Scheduled Caste (SC) | 5 years | 35 years |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 5 years | 35 years |
| PwBD (UR) | 10 years | 40 years |
| PwBD (OBC) | 13 years | 43 years |
| PwBD (SC/ST) | 15 years | 45 years |
| Ex-Servicemen | 5 years | 35 years |
| Persons who had ordinarily been domiciled in J&K between 1980 and 1989 | 5 years | 35 years |
The RBI Grade B attempt limit is one of the most strategically important eligibility conditions and is unique to this exam among all major banking examinations.
General category candidates are allowed a maximum of six attempts, so it is important to plan your preparation early and use each attempt wisely.
| Category Maximum Attempts | |
| Unreserved (UR) | 6 |
| EWS | 6 |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 9 |
| Scheduled Caste (SC) | No limit (within age) |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | No limit (within age) |
| PwBD (UR) | No limit (within age) |
Each time a candidate appears for Phase 1 (Online Preliminary Examination), it counts as one attempt. If a candidate has registered and appeared for Phase 1, that is counted as an attempt regardless of whether they cleared Phase 1 or advanced to Phase 2.
Candidates who register but do NOT appear for Phase 1 (absent on exam day) should check the current RBI policy on whether registration alone counts as an attempt. Historically, only appearing (attending) Phase 1 counts as an attempt.
The 6-attempt limit for UR candidates changes the strategic approach to this exam fundamentally:
Unlike SSC CGL or IBPS PO where appearing repeatedly with sub-par preparation is a viable (if inefficient) strategy, RBI Grade B attempt limits demand that each exam appearance be maximally productive.
There is no mandatory work experience requirement for any of the three streams in RBI Grade B. Fresh graduates and post-graduates who meet the age and qualification criteria are eligible.
However, candidates with relevant work experience (banking, finance, economics research, statistics) may perform better in the Interview stage, where RBI evaluates professional aptitude and understanding of the banking system.
Selected candidates must be in good health and satisfy the medical standards specified by the Reserve Bank of India. A pre-appointment medical examination is conducted by RBI-designated medical authorities.
PwBD candidates must carry their disability certificate issued by a competent medical authority. The certificate must specify the type and percentage of disability (minimum 40% for benchmark disability).
Bond requirement: Selected candidates may be required to execute a bond to serve the RBI for a minimum period after appointment. The bond terms are typically specified in the appointment letter.
Existing RBI employees: Existing RBI employees who apply for Grade B (Direct Recruit) posts are subject to specific internal rules. These candidates should check the notification for conditions applicable to in-service candidates.
OBC-NCL requirement: OBC candidates claiming age relaxation and reservation must belong to the Non-Creamy Layer. The NCL certificate must be in the Central Government format and issued within the validity period specified in the notification (typically within one year of application).
The 60% graduation requirement for General stream UR/OBC/EWS candidates applies to the aggregate marks across all years of the degree programme.
How to calculate:
CGPA conversion:
After the interview and provisional selection, candidates must produce originals and attested copies.
| Document Purpose | |
| Class 10 Certificate and Marksheet | Date of birth proof |
| Class 12 Certificate and Marksheet | Educational record |
| Graduation Degree and All Marksheets (all years/semesters) | Qualification and percentage verification |
| Post-graduation Degree and Marksheets (DEPR/DSIM only) | Stream-specific qualification |
| CA/ICWA/CS Certificate (if qualifying through professional qualification) | Alternative qualification proof |
| SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwBD Certificate | Category verification (Central Government format) |
| Aadhaar Card | Identity verification |
| Valid Photo ID (PAN, Passport, Voter ID, Driving Licence) | Additional identity |
| No Objection Certificate | If currently employed in government/PSU/RBI |
| Character Certificate | From Gazetted Officer or Institution Head |
| Admission Card (Phase 1, Phase 2, Interview) | Proof of exam participation |
| Attempt count declaration | Signed self-declaration on number of previous attempts |
Not checking the graduation percentage before applying: Many aspirants who scored below 60% in graduation apply for the General stream without verifying this condition. The 60% requirement is strictly enforced at document verification.
Not counting previous attempts: UR candidates must track every Phase 1 appearance carefully. Appearing for the 7th time without realising the limit has been crossed leads to immediate disqualification.
OBC certificate in the wrong format: RBI requires the Central Government format. State Government format OBC certificates are not accepted.
Applying for DEPR/DSIM without the required post-graduation: These streams require specific post-graduation degrees in Economics or Statistics. A graduation degree in Economics does not qualify for DEPR; the post-graduation is mandatory.
Misreading the age calculation date: Age is calculated as of the reference date specified in the notification, not the exam date or application date.
| Step Check | |
| 1 | Indian citizenship or eligible non-citizen status confirmed |
| 2 | Graduation degree from a recognised university confirmed |
| 3 | Graduation percentage: 60% or above for UR/OBC/EWS (General stream) |
| 4 | Post-graduation in Economics (DEPR) or Statistics (DSIM) with 55%+ if applicable |
| 5 | Age between 21 and 30 years as of the notification reference date |
| 6 | Previous attempt count verified (must be within the 6-attempt limit for UR) |
| 7 | Category certificate valid and in Central Government format |
| 8 | OBC-NCL certificate current (within validity period) |
