Eligibility verification is the most fundamental step before applying for the IBPS Clerk examination. Candidates who apply without meeting the eligibility conditions face disqualification during document verification, which can occur even after clearing both Prelims and Mains. Since the IBPS Clerk selection process has no interview stage, document verification at the time of joining is the first physical interaction with the bank - and any mismatch discovered there terminates the selection.
This page provides a complete breakdown of every eligibility condition for IBPS Clerk 2026: nationality, age limits with all relaxation categories, educational qualifications, computer literacy requirements, language proficiency conditions, and provisions for special categories including PwBD and ex-servicemen.
For the complete examination overview, visit the IBPS Clerk Prelims main page.

The nationality requirement for IBPS Clerk is as follows. Candidates must fall into one of these categories:
An Indian citizen is the primary eligible nationality.
A subject of Nepal or Bhutan is also eligible.
A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India is eligible.
A person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia), or Vietnam, with the intention of permanently settling in India, is also eligible.
For the last three categories (non-Indian citizens), a Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Government of India is required. This certificate must be produced at the time of the bank's selection process. Without this certificate, candidates from these categories cannot proceed to the joining stage even if they qualify all written stages.
The IBPS Clerk age requirement is as follows for the 2026 cycle:
Candidates must have been born not earlier than 2nd July 1998 and not later than 1st July 2006 (both dates inclusive) for the 2026 cycle, assuming the age cut-off date remains 1st July 2026 as per the standard IBPS convention.
The age is calculated with reference to the cut-off date specified in the official notification (typically 1st July of the application year). Candidates whose date of birth falls outside these boundaries on the cut-off date are ineligible regardless of their actual age at the time of examination.
IBPS provides age relaxation as mandated by the Government of India. The relaxations are as follows:
| Category Age Relaxation Effective Maximum Age | ||
| SC/ST | 5 years | 33 years |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 years | 31 years |
| PwBD - General/EWS | 10 years | 38 years |
| PwBD - OBC | 13 years | 41 years |
| PwBD - SC/ST | 15 years | 43 years |
| Ex-Servicemen / Disabled Ex-Servicemen | 3 years (after deducting military service period) | Variable |
| Widows, Divorced Women, Women Judicially Separated (General/EWS) | 9 years | 37 years |
| Widows, Divorced Women, Women Judicially Separated (OBC) | 12 years | 40 years |
| Widows, Divorced Women, Women Judicially Separated (SC/ST) | 14 years | 42 years |
| Persons ordinarily domiciled in J&K between 1.1.1980 and 31.12.1989 | 5 years | 33 years |
| Persons affected by 1984 riots | 5 years | 33 years |
Age relaxation is cumulative only in specific cases defined by government directives. Generally, relaxation benefits from only one category can be availed at a time. A candidate cannot combine OBC relaxation (3 years) with J&K relaxation (5 years) to claim 8 years of relaxation unless specifically permitted.
Age proof at document verification is the School Leaving Certificate (Class 10 or SSC marksheet), Birth Certificate issued by a Municipal Authority, or any other document acceptable under the examination's terms. IBPS does not accept self-declarations or other identity documents as primary age proof. The date of birth declared in the application must exactly match the date of birth in the age proof document.
A mismatch between declared age and the date of birth in the verification document - even by one day - can cause complications. Verify your birth certificate or Class 10 marksheet before entering the date of birth in the application.
The IBPS Clerk educational qualification requires candidates to hold a degree in any discipline from a University recognised by the Government of India or an equivalent qualification as such recognised by the Central Government.
Key points:
Candidates in the final year of their graduation can apply for the IBPS Clerk Prelims. However, they must have completed their graduation and possess the degree or provisional certificate by the time of joining. Specifically, if shortlisted for provisional allotment, candidates must be able to produce:
The exact cut-off date for producing degree proof is specified in each year's official notification. Missing this deadline results in cancellation of provisional allotment.
Candidates with Integrated Dual Degree (IDD) programmes (e.g., 5-year integrated MSc, BTech+MBA dual degrees) are eligible, provided the date of passing the IDD qualification falls on or before the date specified in the notification for degree proof submission.
Candidates holding professional qualifications such as CA (Chartered Accountant), ICWA (Cost Accountant), and CS (Company Secretary) are eligible even if they do not hold a conventional university degree, provided these qualifications are recognised as equivalent to graduation by the Government of India. Unlike SBI PO, which explicitly lists CA as eligible, IBPS notifications typically cover this through the "equivalent qualification" provision.
Computer literacy is a mandatory eligibility condition for IBPS Clerk. Candidates must have:
The computer certificate must be from a government-recognised institution or a reputed training centre. Certificates from overnight or informal training programmes without institutional recognition are not accepted.
What counts as proof of computer literacy:
Computer literacy is verified at the document verification stage. Candidates who apply without confirming their computer literacy eligibility risk disqualification at this stage despite clearing all written tests.
One of the unique eligibility conditions of IBPS Clerk (compared to IBPS PO) is the Language Proficiency Test requirement.
After provisional allotment to a bank, each bank conducts an LPT before the candidate is confirmed for joining. The LPT tests the candidate's ability to read, write, and communicate in the official language of the state to which they have been allotted.
Candidates are exempted from the LPT if they have studied the official language of the state concerned as a subject at Class 10 level or above, as evidenced by a marksheet or certificate. This is the standard condition across all cycles.
Important: The language exemption applies only if the candidate studied that specific language formally as a subject, not just as the medium of instruction.
For example, a candidate allotted to a bank in Karnataka must prove proficiency in Kannada. If they studied Kannada as a language subject in their Class 10 board exam, they are exempt from the LPT. If they only studied in Kannada as a medium of instruction without Kannada appearing as a separate language subject, they are not automatically exempt.
The IBPS Clerk Mains and Prelims are conducted in 13 regional languages in addition to English and Hindi. Candidates can choose their Mains examination medium from the official list for their state, which supports local language candidates in applying for banks in their home state.
Failing the LPT results in disqualification from that specific bank allotment. The candidate's IBPS Clerk result itself is not cancelled, but they cannot join that particular bank. IBPS does not re-allot candidates who fail the LPT to another bank.
PwBD candidates receive the following concessions in IBPS Clerk:
The disabilities covered include Blindness and Low Vision, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Locomotor Disability (including Cerebral Palsy, Dwarfism, Acid Attack Victims), Autism, Intellectual Disability, Specific Learning Disability, and Mental Illness, as defined under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
A minimum of 40% disability is required for the benchmark disability certificate. This certificate must be issued by a Competent Medical Authority and clearly state the nature and percentage of disability.
For the scribe facility, the scribe's educational qualification must be one grade lower than the candidate's. Candidates who wish to use a scribe must indicate this in the application form and provide the required scribe declaration form at the examination centre.
Ex-servicemen (ESM) candidates receive:
Disabled ex-servicemen receive a higher age relaxation, calculated as the military service period plus 3 additional years.
Unlike UPSC CSE and SBI PO, the IBPS Clerk examination has no cap on the number of attempts. A candidate who fails to clear the cutoff can reapply in every subsequent cycle without any restriction.
This is a significant provision because it means preparation investment is not lost to attempt limits. Candidates can refine their approach cycle after cycle until they qualify. However, age limits continue to apply - a General category candidate who ages out (above 28 years with no relaxation applicable) cannot apply regardless of attempt count.
The absence of attempt limits means there is no urgency-driven pressure to use attempts strategically, unlike UPSC. Focus on building strong preparation rather than managing attempts.
EWS reservation is available for candidates from the General category whose family's gross annual income is below Rs. 8 lakh from all sources and who do not own agricultural land of 5 acres or more or a residential flat of 1,000 sq ft or more (or residential plots exceeding specified limits in notified municipalities).
EWS candidates must possess an income and asset certificate from a competent authority in the prescribed format, issued for the financial year preceding the year of application. EWS candidates from SC, ST, or OBC categories are not eligible for EWS reservation (EWS is exclusively for the unreserved General category).
Before applying for IBPS Clerk 2026, verify the following:
If all six conditions are confirmed, proceed with the application. For the application process steps, visit the IBPS Clerk Application Process page.
Is there an attempt limit for IBPS Clerk? No. IBPS Clerk has no cap on the number of attempts. Candidates can apply for every cycle as long as they are within the age limit. Only age determines the window of eligibility.
Can a candidate with 40% marks in graduation apply for IBPS Clerk? Yes. There is no minimum percentage requirement in graduation for IBPS Clerk. Passing the degree from a recognised university is the only condition.
Does an OBC state certificate work for IBPS Clerk? For IBPS Clerk, the OBC certificate must align with the Central List of OBCs maintained by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. A state OBC certificate that is not on the Central List is not valid for IBPS (a central government recruitment process).
What happens if I don't pass the Language Proficiency Test? Failing the LPT disqualifies the candidate from joining that specific bank. The IBPS Clerk result itself is not invalidated, but the bank allotment cannot be processed. IBPS does not provide a re-allotment opportunity in such cases.
Is a Distance Education graduation degree valid? Yes, provided the university offering the programme through distance mode is recognised by UGC and the specific programme has been approved. IGNOU degrees are widely accepted. Check UGC's list of recognised open and distance learning institutions if unsure about a specific university.
I do not have a computer certificate. Can I still apply? If you studied Computer Science, Information Technology, or any computer-related subject as a paper in Class 10, Class 12, or Graduation and have a marksheet showing it, you are considered computer literate. If none of these apply, you must obtain a computer certificate from a recognised institution before document verification.
Understanding and satisfying every eligibility condition before applying prevents the frustration of disqualification at the final stage after months of successful preparation and examination performance. Invest the time to verify each condition carefully.
