The IBPS Clerk Prelims 2026 is scheduled for 10th and 11th October 2026. For many candidates, it is their first experience with a large-scale computer-based banking examination. Examination day preparedness extends well beyond subject knowledge - it covers operational details such as what to carry, when to arrive, what happens during biometric verification, how the computer-based test interface works, and what to do between sections given the strict 20-minute sectional locks.
Getting these operational details wrong - arriving late, carrying a prohibited item, not knowing the CBT navigation system - can compromise or completely void months of preparation. This page covers every exam-day requirement in precise detail.
For the complete examination overview, visit the IBPS Clerk Prelims main page. For the exam pattern and sectional timing structure, see the IBPS Clerk Exam Pattern page.

Your specific exam date, shift, and reporting time are printed on your individual admit card. Always refer to the admit card for confirmed timing - the shift times above are indicative based on the 2025 pattern.
Entry to the IBPS Clerk examination hall closes before the exam begins. Candidates who arrive after the gate closing time are denied entry under any circumstances - no exceptions are made regardless of the reason.
Based on the 2025 examination pattern:
| Shift Start Time Gate Closing Time Recommended Arrival | ||
| 8:00 AM | 7:45 AM | 7:00 to 7:15 AM |
| 10:30 AM | 10:15 AM | 9:30 to 9:45 AM |
| 12:30 PM | 12:15 PM | 11:30 to 11:45 AM |
| 3:00 PM | 2:45 PM | 2:00 to 2:15 PM |
These timings are illustrative. Your admit card specifies your exact reporting time. Plan to arrive at the examination centre at least 60 minutes before the gate closing time to account for:
If the examination centre is unfamiliar, visit the location a day before the exam to confirm the route, travel time, and parking availability. Many examination centres are in educational institutions or commercial buildings that can be difficult to find on exam day without prior familiarity.
The following documents are required at the IBPS Clerk examination centre. Missing any mandatory document is grounds for denial of entry.
The admit card must be printed - digital copies on mobile phones are not accepted. Print on A4-size white paper with all details clearly legible. Print at least 2 copies - one for submission and one as a personal record.
Before arriving at the centre, affix a recent passport-size photograph on the admit card in the designated space. The photograph must be identical to the one uploaded during the application. IBPS requires the photograph to be the same throughout the recruitment cycle - do not use a different photograph. The invigilator may match the pasted photograph with the one on the admit card printout.
Sign the admit card in the signature field when asked by the invigilator at the examination centre.
A valid, original, government-issued photo identity document is mandatory. The following documents are accepted:
Carry one photocopy of the identity document along with the original. The photocopy must be stapled or clipped to the admit card. Both original and photocopy are collected or checked at the examination centre.
Documents not accepted include ration cards, learner's driving licences, and any document without a photograph.
Two recent passport-size photographs identical to the one uploaded during application must be carried. One is affixed on the admit card (as above), and one is typically required for the attendance register or biometric record at the examination centre.
The photographs must be recent - taken within 6 months of the examination date - and must match your current appearance. Wearing heavily different clothing, hairstyle, or accessories compared to the photograph can cause verification delays.
Candidates must carry a blue or black ink stamp pad. The left thumb impression is taken on the attendance sheet and sometimes on the admit card at the examination centre. IBPS does not provide ink pads at exam centres. If you do not carry one, you may be asked to provide the thumb impression by other means at the centre's discretion, which can cause unnecessary delays.
Pens are used for signing documents, the attendance register, and the admit card at the examination centre. The actual examination answers are submitted through the computer interface - pens are not used for answering questions. However, rough work calculations during the Numerical Ability and Reasoning sections can be done on rough sheets provided at the terminal, and a pen may be used for this purpose.
Most IBPS Clerk examination centres permit a transparent water bottle without labels or stickers. Check your admit card for any specific centre instructions that may override the general rule.
The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection enforces strict prohibition on all electronic and communication devices inside examination premises. Being found with any prohibited item - even if switched off, in a bag, or in a pocket - can lead to immediate cancellation of candidature and potential debarment from future IBPS examinations.
Absolutely prohibited inside the examination premises:
Regarding mobile phones: Leave your mobile phone at home or in your vehicle. The IBPS examination circular explicitly bans mobile phones inside examination premises. Most centres have no secure storage facility for phones. Candidates who bring phones to the centre risk confiscation, disqualification, and being reported under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, which carries serious legal consequences.
Regarding analog watches: Simple non-smart analog watches are generally permitted. Since the computer interface typically shows a countdown timer during the examination, a watch is primarily useful during the wait time before the exam begins.
IBPS conducts biometric verification for all candidates before they are permitted to enter the examination hall. This includes:
Photograph capture: A webcam-based photograph is taken at the centre. This photo is digitally compared with the photograph uploaded during the application. If the photos do not match (due to appearance changes, different clothing styles, or quality issues in the uploaded photo), the candidate's entry may be delayed or questioned.
Signature verification: The candidate signs in front of the invigilator. This signature is compared against the signature uploaded during the application. Signature in block capitals, or a signature that looks significantly different from the uploaded one, triggers a flag.
Left thumb impression: The left thumb impression is taken at the centre and recorded against the uploaded thumb impression.
These three verification steps together create the candidate's biometric identity record for the examination. Any significant discrepancy between the application uploads and the physical presentation is treated as a potential irregularity.
To avoid verification delays: wear similar clothing style to the application photograph, maintain the same hairstyle, carry the ink pad for the thumb impression, and bring a pen for the signature.
The IBPS Clerk Prelims is conducted entirely on a computer. Understanding the CBT interface before exam day prevents confusion and wasted time learning the navigation system during the actual paper.
The interface shows:
Navigation:
Critical rule - Sectional Lock: When the 20-minute timer for a section expires, the system automatically locks that section. The screen transitions to the next section's first question. You cannot return to the locked section. This is the most operationally important feature of the IBPS Clerk CBT and the one most candidates underestimate before their first experience.
When there are 2 to 3 minutes remaining in a section, complete any "Mark for Review" revisits and lock in your final answers. Do not be mid-question when the section lock triggers.
Rough sheets: Physical rough sheets are provided at the computer terminal for calculations. These are not scrap paper - they are official rough sheets that must be submitted to the invigilator before leaving the hall. Taking rough sheets out of the examination hall is a serious violation.
Technical issues: If the computer malfunctions during the examination, raise your hand immediately and inform the invigilator. Do not attempt to restart or troubleshoot the computer. The centre staff will either resolve the issue or transfer you to a spare terminal. Any time lost due to technical failure on the centre's part is addressed by the examination authority.
With 20 minutes per section and strict locks, real-time time management is more critical in IBPS Clerk Prelims than in most written exams. A practical approach:
English Language (30 questions, 20 minutes): Start with questions where the answer is immediately known - vocabulary, simple grammar. Attempt RC passages next if the passage is accessible. Leave para jumbles for last as they typically require the most time per question.
Numerical Ability (35 questions, 20 minutes): Begin with Simplification questions - these are the fastest in the section. Number series next. Approach DI sets by first reading all 4 to 5 questions in a set to decide if the set is worth the 3 to 5 minutes it will take. If the DI calculations appear very lengthy, move to the next DI set and return only if time permits.
Reasoning Ability (35 questions, 20 minutes): Complete all non-puzzle questions first (Syllogisms, Inequalities, Blood Relations, Directions, Alphanumeric Series) - these typically take 30 to 60 seconds each and collectively provide 12 to 18 questions. Then dedicate remaining time to puzzle sets, evaluating the first 45 seconds of each set to decide whether to attempt it fully or move to the next.
Inside the examination hall, the following rules govern all candidates throughout the session:
Exit calmly: Leave the examination hall without engaging in group discussions about answers. Since it is a CBT, answers are already submitted and cannot be changed. Discussing answers creates anxiety without any benefit.
Keep the admit card: The Prelims admit card must be preserved. It is required at the Mains examination centre for verification.
Track the result: The Prelims result and scorecard are typically released 2 to 3 weeks after the examination. Monitor ibps.in regularly. For step-by-step result checking guidance, visit the IBPS Clerk Result page.
Begin Mains preparation immediately: Do not wait for the Prelims result before starting Mains preparation. The Mains is held approximately 7 to 8 weeks after Prelims. Candidates who begin Mains preparation from the Prelims exam date itself have a significant advantage.
Evening before the exam:
Morning of the exam:
Is a digital admit card on mobile phone accepted at the IBPS Clerk centre? No. A printed admit card on A4-size white paper is mandatory. Digital versions on phones, tablets, or laptops are not accepted. Print at least 2 copies.
What if I forget the ink stamp pad? The ink stamp pad is required for the thumb impression on the attendance sheet. Some centres may accommodate candidates without one, but this varies by centre and cannot be guaranteed. Always carry your own ink pad to avoid complications.
Can I leave the hall during the Prelims if I finish early? In most IBPS Clerk examinations, candidates are not permitted to leave before the section timer expires for the section they are in. Confirm the specific centre's rules from the instructions printed on your admit card.
What happens if the computer freezes mid-exam? Inform the invigilator immediately by raising your hand. Do not touch the computer or try to restart it. The centre staff are trained to handle technical issues and will either resolve it or move you to a spare terminal.
Is a rough sheet provided at the examination centre? Yes. Official rough sheets are provided at each computer terminal. These must be submitted to the invigilator before leaving the hall. Do not take rough sheets out of the examination centre.
Can I carry snacks or lunch to the examination centre? Packed food items are generally not permitted inside the examination hall. Most IBPS Clerk shifts are 60 minutes in duration, so hunger during the exam itself is unlikely. Plan your meal timing around your shift time and eat before arriving at the centre.
