The most important strategic decision in the RRB Group D application process is zone selection. Unlike SSC exams where a single portal handles all applications, RRB applications are submitted to a specific RRB zone. The zone affects:
| Zone Type Examples UR CBT Cutoff (Approx.) Strategy | |||
| Very High Competition | RRB Patna, RRB Chandigarh, RRB Prayagraj | 75 to 82 | Apply only if consistently scoring 88+ in mocks |
| High Competition | RRB Mumbai, RRB Kolkata, RRB Secunderabad | 72 to 79 | Good if scoring 84 to 88 in mocks |
| Moderate Competition | RRB Bhopal, RRB Bengaluru, RRB Ahmedabad | 68 to 75 | Better cutoff odds for candidates scoring 78 to 84 |
| Lower Competition | RRB Malda, RRB Siliguri, RRB Bilaspur | 62 to 70 | Best option for candidates scoring 74 to 80 |
Candidates willing to accept a posting anywhere in India should apply to the zone with the most favourable vacancy-to-candidate ratio. Candidates who want to stay in a specific region must apply to their preferred zone regardless of competition level.
Visit rrbapply.gov.in. This is the centralised RRB application portal. Alternatively, visit the regional RRB website for the zone you wish to apply to.
Click on "New Registration" or the CEN application link. Candidates who have previously registered for any RRB exam may be able to use existing credentials. First-time applicants must register fresh.
Enter:
After submission, a Registration Number and Password are generated. Save these securely. They are required for every subsequent login including admit card download and result checking.
Log in and complete the application form. All sections must be filled.
| Form Section Fields | |
| Personal Details | Name, date of birth, gender, father's name, mother's name |
| Contact Details | Mobile, email, permanent and correspondence address, state, PIN |
| Educational Details | Class 10 details (board, year, percentage), ITI/NAC details (if applicable) |
| Category | UR/OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS/PwBD/ESM |
| Identity | Aadhaar number |
| Zone | Preferred RRB zone for application |
| Exam City | Preferred exam centre city |
| Post Preferences | Select preferred posts from the available list |
Candidates must upload a scanned passport-size photograph and signature. Some cycles also require uploading a scanned identity document.
| Document Format Size Requirements | |||
| Passport-size Photograph | JPEG | 15 to 50 KB | Recent, light background, face clearly visible |
| Signature | JPEG | 10 to 40 KB | Black ink on white paper, cursive style |
Photograph specifications for RRB Group D: Scanned passport-size photograph and signature must meet RRB's prescribed dimensions and file size requirements. A photograph with a coloured background, poor resolution, or more than 6 months old is typically rejected during scrutiny.
Complete fee payment through your preferred mode. Save the e-receipt as proof. The application is confirmed only after fee payment is successful.
Review the complete application before final submission. After payment, submit the form and download the printout of the submitted application. This printout serves as confirmation of application.
After the application deadline, RRB provides a correction window of approximately 10 days. For CEN 09/2025, this was March 12 to 21, 2026.
| Correctable Non-correctable | |
| Photograph (if technically rejected) | Name |
| Signature (if incorrect) | Date of birth |
| Exam city preference | Category (UR/OBC/SC/ST) |
| Some contact details | Zone choice |
| Scribe requirement declaration | Post preferences (in most cases) |
Name, date of birth, category, and zone are locked after the correction window closes. Errors in these fields that are discovered later create complications at Document Verification that may require legal proceedings to resolve.
Within a zone, candidates can express preference for specific posts. Post allocation after final selection depends on merit rank and preference order.
| Post Pay Level Preference Logic | ||
| Track Maintainer Grade IV | Level 1 | Largest vacancy share; highest selection probability |
| Pointsman | Level 1 | Good vacancy availability; outdoor role |
| Assistant Loco Shed (Electrical) | Level 1 | Technical role; specific eligibility |
| Assistant Loco Shed (Diesel) | Level 1 | Technical role; specific eligibility |
| Hospital Attendant | Level 1 | Indoor role; fewer vacancies |
Candidates who prefer indoor or workshop-based roles should rank Assistant and Helper posts higher. Candidates who do not mind outdoor and shift-based work should rank Track Maintainer and Pointsman posts high, as these have the largest vacancy pool and thus higher selection probability.
The RRB Group D Application Status 2026 will be available by the Railway Recruitment Board in May 2026 at the candidate login portal. In order to check the application status, candidates need to log in using the registration number and password.
The application status shows whether:
While only a photograph and signature are required during the online application, the following originals must be produced at Document Verification after all exam stages are cleared.
| Document Purpose | |
| Class 10 Certificate and Marksheet | Date of birth and educational qualification |
| ITI Certificate or NAC from NCVT (if applicable) | Trade qualification verification |
| SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS Certificate | Category verification (Central Government format) |
| OBC-NCL Certificate (must be recent, Central Govt. format) | Non-Creamy Layer verification |
| PwBD Certificate (if applicable) | Disability eligibility |
| ESM Discharge Certificate | For Ex-Servicemen |
| Character Certificate | From Gazetted Officer or Institution Head |
| No Objection Certificate | If employed in government/PSU |
| Aadhaar Card | Identity verification |
| Valid Photo ID (PAN, Voter ID, Passport, Driving Licence) | Additional identity |
| Application Confirmation Printout | Proof of application |
| CBT Admit Card | Proof of exam participation |
Applying to the wrong zone: Zone choice is locked after the correction window. Applying to a high-competition zone without a competitive score in mock tests significantly reduces selection probability.
Name mismatch with Class 10 certificate: The name in the application must exactly match the Class 10 certificate. Even minor discrepancies (full name vs initials, spelling variations) create problems at Document Verification.
Uploading an outdated photograph: The photograph must be recent. Photographs more than 6 months old are not accepted in most RRB cycles. Use a fresh photograph taken against a light or white background.
OBC-NCL in State Government format: RRB requires the Central Government prescribed format. State Government certificates are not accepted.
Not applying physical preparation alongside CBT study: The PET comes after CBT and is a qualifying stage. Candidates who do not train physically face disqualification even after clearing the CBT. Begin running and weight-carrying practice early.
Last-minute submission: The RRB application portal experiences severe traffic near the deadline. The deadline was extended from March 2 to March 9 in the 2026 cycle, which added more last-minute applicants. Submit within the first two weeks to avoid technical failures.
Applying to multiple zones: The notification specifies whether applications to multiple zones are permitted. In most cycles, candidates can apply to only one zone. Submitting multiple applications for the same cycle results in rejection of all applications.
The RRB Group D application uses the rrbapply.gov.in centralised portal but routes applications to the selected zone's regional database. This is why each zone has a separate regional website (rrbcdg.gov.in for Chandigarh, rrbpatna.gov.in for Patna, etc.) but the primary application submission happens through rrbapply.gov.in.
Admit card downloads, answer key access, result checking, and scorecard downloads are handled through either rrbapply.gov.in or the regional RRB website for the zone applied to. Candidates should bookmark both portals.
After successfully submitting the application:
| Stage Expected Timeline | |
| Application Status Available | May 2026 |
| City Intimation Slip | 10 days before CBT |
| Admit Card Available | 4 days before CBT |

Can I still apply for RRB Group D 2026? No. The application window for CEN 09/2025 closed on March 9, 2026. The next opportunity will be the application window for the 2027 cycle, expected in late 2026 or early 2027.
What is the application fee for RRB Group D? Rs 500 for General and OBC candidates (Rs 400 refunded after appearing in CBT). Rs 250 for SC, ST, PwBD, Women, ESM, Transgender, Minorities, and EBC candidates (full Rs 250 refunded).
Can I apply to multiple zones in RRB Group D? In the CEN 09/2025 cycle, candidates were generally allowed to apply to one zone only. Multiple applications for the same zone or applying to multiple zones leads to rejection. Check the notification for the next cycle.
What if my photograph was rejected after submission? The correction window allowed photograph re-upload from March 12 to 21, 2026. For future cycles, always prepare the photograph meeting specifications before the application opens.
How do I choose between zones? Choose based on: posting preference (where do you want to work), cutoff data (which zone has a manageable cutoff for your mock score), and vacancy availability (which zone has more vacancies for your preferred post).
