The RRB Group D eligibility criteria define the minimum conditions every candidate must satisfy before applying for Level 1 posts under CEN 09/2025. The Railway Recruitment Board enforces these criteria strictly at every stage of the selection process. Candidates who do not meet even one condition are disqualified at document verification, regardless of their CBT score or PET performance. Since the CBT score is the direct merit-determining factor in Group D, any disqualification after clearing the exam wastes months of preparation effort.
This page covers the complete official eligibility framework for RRB Group D 2026, including nationality conditions, post-wise educational qualifications, age limits with exact birth date ranges, category-wise age relaxation, Physical Efficiency Test (PET) standards, Physical Standard Test (PST) measurements, medical standards with vision category tables, and a complete list of documents required at Document Verification.

Candidates applying to RRB Group D 2026 must be within the age limit and must have the required educational qualification. As per the RRB Group D Nationality criteria, a candidate must be an Indian citizen or fall under one of the eligible alternative categories.
The full list of eligible nationalities:
Non-Indian citizens from the eligible categories must produce a Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Government of India at Document Verification. Without this certificate, selection cannot be confirmed.
To apply for RRB Group D 2026, candidates must have one of the following: Class 10th Pass (Matriculation), or ITI Certificate from a recognised institution, or National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) from NCVT.
| Qualification Details | |
| Class 10 Pass (Matriculation) | From a recognised Central or State Board. Any stream. No minimum percentage required. |
| ITI Certificate | From a recognised institution affiliated with NCVT (National Council for Vocational Training) or SCVT (State Council for Vocational Training) in a relevant trade. |
| National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) | Granted by NCVT in a relevant trade. This is the certificate issued after completion of an apprenticeship at a recognised establishment. |
| Diploma/Degree in Engineering | Accepted for certain specified posts. Not a blanket substitute for ITI/NAC for all Level 1 posts. |
A Diploma/Degree in Engineering will not be accepted in place of ITI/CCAA for Level-1 posts (unless specified). Graduate Act Apprentices are not valid substitutes for Course Completed Act Apprenticeship (CCAA).
CCAAs from all trade backgrounds who received their training at Railway establishments can submit applications according to the notice. Only those with a National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) issued by NCVT (National Council for Vocational Training) can apply. The Board/Institute/Organisation outside of NCVT does not authorise eligibility for CCAAs.
Final-year candidates: Final-year or appearing candidates are typically not eligible; the qualification must be completed by the application closing date. This is different from SSC CHSL which sometimes allows provisional eligibility. For RRB Group D, the certificate must be in hand by the time of application.
12th pass candidates: 12th pass candidates can apply for RRB Group D 2026, but with an important condition: 12th pass alone is not a separate eligibility criterion. In simple terms, 10th pass is mandatory, and higher qualifications like 12th are acceptable but not required.
Candidates must have attained the minimum age of 18 years and must not have crossed the maximum age of 33 years as on 01-01-2026.
| Limit Age | |
| Minimum Age | 18 years |
| Maximum Age (UR/EWS) | 33 years |
| Age Cutoff Date | January 1, 2026 |
Age limit as applicable to this CEN 09/2025, is 18 to 36 years (to provide opportunity to candidates who have exceeded age due to COVID-19 Pandemic).
This means the effective upper age limit for the 2026 cycle is 36 years for all categories, as a one-time COVID-19 relief provision, before the standard category-based relaxations are applied further on top.
| Category Must Not Be Born Before Must Not Be Born After | ||
| UR / EWS (standard 33 years) | January 2, 1993 | January 1, 2008 |
| UR / EWS (with COVID 36 years) | January 2, 1990 | January 1, 2008 |
| OBC-NCL (3 years + COVID) | January 2, 1987 | January 1, 2008 |
| SC/ST (5 years + COVID) | January 2, 1985 | January 1, 2008 |
| PwBD UR (10 years + COVID) | January 2, 1980 | January 1, 2008 |
Age calculation confuses some; it is strictly as on 1 January 2026, not application date. Always use January 1, 2026, as the reference date.
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years; SC/ST: 5 years; Persons with Disabilities (PwBD): 10 to 15 years (depending on category); Ex-Servicemen and Others: As per government rules.
| Category Standard Relaxation With COVID Relief | ||
| Unreserved (UR) / EWS | 0 years (max 33) | 3 extra (max 36) |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 years (max 36) | 3 extra (max 39) |
| Scheduled Caste (SC) | 5 years (max 38) | 3 extra (max 41) |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 5 years (max 38) | 3 extra (max 41) |
| PwBD (UR) | 10 years (max 43) | 3 extra (max 46) |
| PwBD (OBC) | 13 years (max 46) | 3 extra (max 49) |
| PwBD (SC/ST) | 15 years (max 48) | 3 extra (max 51) |
| Ex-Servicemen | 3 years after deduction of military service | + 3 COVID |
| J&K Domicile (1980-1989) | 5 years | + 3 COVID |
OBC-NCL requirement: OBC age relaxation is available only to candidates in the Non-Creamy Layer. The NCL certificate must be in the Central Government format and must be valid at the time of application.
Ex-Servicemen calculation: The total military service rendered is subtracted from the actual age. An additional 3 years is then added as ESM relaxation.
Only candidates who clear the CBT shall be eligible to appear for the PET. As per the RRB Group D Notification, candidates up to 3 times the vacancies will be called for PET.
This means for 22,195 vacancies, approximately 66,585 candidates will be shortlisted from the CBT for PET.
For males: lift and carry 35 kg for 100 metres in 2 minutes without dropping, and run 1000 metres in 4 minutes 15 seconds. For females: lift and carry 20 kg for 100 metres in 2 minutes, and run 1000 metres in 5 minutes 40 seconds (one chance each).
| Task Male Standard Female Standard | ||
| Running | 1000 metres in 4 minutes 15 seconds | 1000 metres in 5 minutes 40 seconds |
| Weight Lifting and Carrying | 35 kg for 100 metres in 2 minutes | 20 kg for 100 metres in 2 minutes |
| Chances Allowed | One chance only | One chance only |

Key PET rules:
Every year, a significant proportion of candidates who clear the RRB Group D CBT fail to qualify PET because they focused entirely on written preparation. The running standard (1,000 metres in 4 minutes 15 seconds for males) requires consistent physical training. Without building cardiovascular fitness alongside CBT preparation, a candidate may clear the CBT with a strong score only to be eliminated at PET.
Start physical training at least 2 to 3 months before the expected PET date. Building endurance for the 1,000-metre run and practising the weight-carrying task regularly is essential.
PST involves measurement of height, weight, and chest (for males of certain categories). The PST is conducted alongside the PET.
| Category Male Minimum Height Female Minimum Height | ||
| General | 158 cm | 152 cm |
| ST (Tribal areas) | 152 cm | 147 cm |
| Gorkhas, Nepalese, Sikkimese, specified hill people | 152 cm | 147 cm |
Weight must be proportionate to height as per the standard Body Mass Index (BMI) charts used by Indian Railways. Extreme underweight or overweight relative to height is a disqualifying condition.
All candidates who clear PET must undergo a Medical Examination conducted by a Railway Medical Authority. Medical standards vary by post based on operational requirements.
Candidates must meet specific medical standards. The standards vary for different categories as shown below.
| Medical Standard Distant Vision (Without/With Glasses) General Fitness | ||
| A2 | 6/9, 6/9 without glasses | Physically fit in all respects |
| A3 | 6/9, 6/9 with or without glasses | Physically fit in all respects |
| B1 | 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses | Physically fit in all respects |
| B2 | 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses | Physically fit in all respects |
| C1 | 6/12, 6/18 with or without glasses | Physically fit in all respects |
| C2 | 6/12, Nil with or without glasses | Physically fit in all respects |
Candidates must pass tests for Colour Vision, Binocular Vision, Night Vision, etc.
The specific vision standard required varies by post:
Candidates with colour blindness cannot be appointed to posts requiring discrimination of railway signal colours. Verify the specific standard required for your preferred post in the official notification.
| Requirement Standard | |
| Hearing | Normal hearing in both ears; must detect conversational speech at 10 feet |
| Cardiac | No active cardiac condition |
| General Fitness | No chronic disease incompatible with operational duties |
| Mental Health | No active psychological condition |
| Orthopaedic | No deformity incompatible with duties of the post |
Qualifying marks: UR 40%, EWS 40%, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) 30%, SC 30%, ST 30%.
| Category Minimum Qualifying Percentage Marks out of 100 | ||
| UR | 40% | 40 marks |
| EWS | 40% | 40 marks |
| OBC-NCL | 30% | 30 marks |
| SC | 30% | 30 marks |
| ST | 30% | 25 marks (PwD relaxation applies) |
These are minimum qualifying marks, not the actual competitive cutoff. The competitive cutoff in most zones is significantly higher (70 to 82 for UR based on recent cycles).
After clearing CBT and PET, candidates are called for Document Verification (DV). The following original documents must be produced along with self-attested photocopies.
| Document Purpose | |
| Class 10 Certificate and Marksheet | Date of birth and educational qualification proof |
| ITI/NAC Certificate (if applicable) | Trade qualification proof |
| SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwBD Certificate | Category verification (Central Government format) |
| OBC Non-Creamy Layer Certificate | Issued recently; Central Government format |
| ESM Discharge Certificate | For Ex-Servicemen |
| Eligibility Certificate (non-Indian nationals) | Nationality eligibility |
| Aadhaar Card | Identity verification |
| Valid Photo ID (PAN, Voter ID, Passport, Driving Licence) | Additional identity |
| Character Certificate | From a Gazetted Officer or Head of Institution |
| No Objection Certificate | If currently employed in government/PSU |
| Passport-size Photographs | As specified by RRB |
| All Call Letters (CBT Admit Card) | Proof of exam participation |
Many assume any apprenticeship certificate qualifies, but only NCVT-issued NAC or equivalent is valid. State boards or private ones often do not count.
Using SCVT ITI instead of NCVT NAC for CCAA posts: Only NCVT-issued NAC is valid for Course Completed Act Apprentices. SCVT ITI certificates qualify for ITI-based eligibility but not for CCAA-specific posts.
Not verifying the age cutoff date: Age calculation is strictly as on 1 January 2026, not the application date.
Applying without physical training: Candidates who clear CBT but have not trained physically for PET risk elimination at the final stage. PET is pass/fail with no second chance.
Claiming OBC without a valid NCL certificate: State Government format certificates are not accepted. The Central Government prescribed format with a valid date is mandatory.
Producing NIOS or open-schooling certificates without verification: NIOS certificates are generally accepted but must be from a board recognised by the Central or State Government.
What is the minimum qualification for RRB Group D 2026? The minimum educational qualification requires candidates to have completed Class 10th from a recognised Board or Institution. ITI from NCVT/SCVT or NAC from NCVT are alternative qualifications.
What is the age limit for RRB Group D 2026? Candidates must have attained the minimum age of 18 years and must not have crossed the maximum age of 33 years as on 01-01-2026. With the COVID-19 special relaxation, the effective upper limit for CEN 09/2025 is 36 years.
Are PwBD candidates exempt from PET? Persons with Disabilities (PwBD) are exempted from PET but must pass the medical examination.
Is ITI mandatory? ITI is not mandatory for all posts. The Railway Recruitment Board requires a 10th pass as the primary eligibility. ITI is required or preferred for specific trades.
Can 12th pass candidates apply? Yes. 12th pass candidates can apply for RRB Group D 2026 because having passed 12th means they have already passed 10th. 12th pass alone is not a separate eligibility criterion.
