Verifying your eligibility before applying for NEET UG 2027 is the most critical first step in the entire preparation journey. Candidates who apply without meeting NTA's prescribed conditions face cancellation of candidature at any stage, including after appearing in the exam, after qualifying, or even after provisional seat allotment through counselling. NTA's verification is rigorous and there is no appeal process for candidature cancelled on eligibility grounds.
This page covers every eligibility parameter for NEET UG 2027 in complete detail: nationality, minimum age, educational qualification, compulsory subjects, minimum marks in Class 12, year of passing, attempt limit, dropper eligibility, NRI and OCI conditions, and the separate eligibility requirements for admission to government MBBS seats beyond just qualifying the exam.
All information on this page is based on the NTA Information Bulletin for NEET UG 2026 and NMC guidelines effective for 2026. The 2027 criteria are expected to remain identical unless announced otherwise in the official 2027 bulletin.
Official Source: NEET UG 2027 eligibility criteria will be officially published by NTA in the Information Bulletin at neet.nta.nic.in, expected in February 2027. Candidates must read the full bulletin before applying.

The following categories are eligible to apply for NEET UG 2027:
Indian Citizens: All Indian nationals, whether studying in India or abroad, are eligible.
Non-Resident Indians (NRIs): NRIs holding valid Indian passports are eligible. They may appear from Indian exam centres or from international centres where NTA conducts the exam.
Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs): PIO cardholders are eligible. The PIO card must be valid.
Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs): OCI cardholders are eligible. The OCI card must be valid and valid Indian passport or OCI card must be produced during document verification.
Foreign Nationals: Foreign nationals are eligible subject to conditions specified in the Information Bulletin. They must obtain an eligibility certificate from the Medical Council of India or the National Medical Commission verifying equivalence of their qualifying examination. Admission eligibility for foreign nationals varies by institution.
Important for NRI/OCI/PIO candidates: These candidates may be eligible for NRI quota seats in private medical colleges, which are separate from the AIQ and state quota seats. NRI quota admissions are handled by individual institutions outside the MCC counselling process.
Candidates must be at least 17 years of age as of December 31 of the year of admission. For NEET UG 2027 (admission to academic year 2027-28), the cutoff date is December 31, 2027. A candidate born on or before December 31, 2010, is eligible.
There is no upper age limit for NEET UG. The Supreme Court of India ruled against the maximum age cap (which was earlier 25 years for General category and 30 years for reserved categories) in 2018. The NMC and NTA have not reimposed any age restriction since. Candidates of any age above 17 years can appear for NEET UG 2027.
However, candidates should note that this rule has been subject to periodic review and court challenges. Any change will be announced in the official NTA bulletin. Verify the age condition from the 2027 official bulletin before applying.
Candidates must have passed the Class 12 examination (10+2 or equivalent) from a recognised board or must be appearing in Class 12 in 2027.
Accepted qualifying examinations include:
| Year of Passing Class 12 NEET UG 2027 Eligibility | |
| Any year (2010 onwards, subject to age) | Eligible |
| Appearing in 2027 | Eligible |
NEET UG does not impose a year-of-passing restriction. A candidate who passed Class 12 in 2018 and is applying for NEET 2027 for the first time is fully eligible, provided they meet the age and subject requirements.
This is a fundamental difference from JEE Main, which restricts eligibility to candidates who passed Class 12 in the preceding 2 years or are appearing in the current year.
The subjects studied in Class 12 are the primary eligibility determinant after age.
| Subject Status | |
| Physics | Compulsory |
| Chemistry | Compulsory |
| Biology or Biotechnology | Compulsory (either one is acceptable) |
| English | Compulsory |
A candidate who studied Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English in Class 12 (PCM stream without Biology) is NOT eligible for NEET UG. Biology or Biotechnology as a full subject in Class 12 is mandatory.
Yes. Candidates who took Mathematics as their primary stream (PCM) but also studied Biology as an additional subject in Class 12 are eligible for NEET UG, provided Biology appears in their Class 12 marksheet as a full subject. The minimum marks criteria (50 percent in PCB aggregate) must also be met using Biology marks.
This scenario is common among students who appear for both JEE Main and NEET in the same year.
Unlike JEE Main (which has no minimum marks requirement to appear), NEET UG requires candidates to have secured minimum marks in their Class 12 qualifying examination.
| Category Minimum Marks Required in PCB Aggregate (Class 12) | |
| General / UR | 50% |
| General - EWS | 50% |
| OBC-NCL | 40% |
| SC | 40% |
| ST | 40% |
| General - PwD | 45% |
| OBC/SC/ST - PwD | 40% |
The PCB aggregate is the percentage of marks scored in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology combined. English and other subjects are not included in this calculation.
Example: If a candidate scored 80 in Physics, 75 in Chemistry, and 85 in Biology (out of 100 each): PCB aggregate = (80 + 75 + 85) / 300 x 100 = 240/300 x 100 = 80 percent.
This candidate meets the 50 percent General category requirement.
Candidates appearing in Class 12 in 2027 are eligible to apply and appear in NEET UG 2027 before their results. However, they must produce proof of meeting the minimum marks requirement at the time of admission (document verification during counselling). If they fail to meet the minimum marks in their final Class 12 result, they will be ineligible for admission despite qualifying NEET.
There is currently no limit on the number of times a candidate can appear for NEET UG. Following the Supreme Court's 2017 ruling and subsequent NMC guidelines, the attempt limit was removed entirely.
This means a candidate who appeared in NEET 2020 and is appearing again in NEET 2027 is fully eligible, as long as they meet the age and educational qualification requirements.
Earlier, NEET had an upper age limit (25 to 30 years) and attempt limits (3 attempts). The Supreme Court ruled these restrictions to be unconstitutional as they disproportionately restricted access to medical education. Since the removal, medical aspirants can attempt NEET in any year they are eligible under the age and qualification criteria.
Candidates who have taken one or more gap years after Class 12 to prepare for NEET are commonly called droppers. Their eligibility follows identical rules to any other candidate.
| Scenario Eligibility | |
| Passed Class 12 in 2024, appearing in NEET 2027 for the first time | Eligible (no year restriction) |
| Appeared in NEET 2025 and 2026, appearing again in 2027 | Eligible (no attempt limit) |
| Passed Class 12 in 2020 with 60% in PCB (General), appearing in 2027 | Eligible |
| Passed Class 12 in 2022 with 45% in PCB (General) | Not eligible (below 50% General threshold) |
| Passed Class 12 in 2022 with 45% in PCB (SC category) | Eligible (SC threshold is 40%) |
Taking a drop year does not affect NEET eligibility or admission. Individual medical colleges do not penalise gap year candidates in their admission process. The NEET score and AIR are the sole criteria for seat allotment through MCC and state counselling.
Candidates of Indian origin living outside India may apply for NEET UG under the following conditions.
| Category Eligibility Additional Conditions | ||
| NRI | Yes | Must hold valid Indian passport; may appear from Indian or international centres |
| PIO | Yes | PIO card must be valid; treated as Indian national for eligibility purposes |
| OCI | Yes | OCI card must be valid |
| Foreign National | Yes (with conditions) | Must obtain AIU equivalence certificate for Class 12; admission may be through NRI quota |
Candidates who completed Class 12 from an international board (IB, IGCSE, American, British, etc.) must obtain an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) confirming that their qualification is equivalent to the Indian Class 12 standard with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as subjects.
NRI candidates who qualify NEET UG are eligible for:
NRI quota seats have different fee structures (typically significantly higher) and are filled through individual college admission processes, not MCC counselling.
One NEET UG score provides access to multiple medical and allied health programmes. Eligibility conditions differ slightly by programme.
| Programme Minimum Qualifying Score Governing Body | ||
| MBBS | 50th percentile (General); 40th percentile (OBC/SC/ST) | NMC |
| BDS | 50th percentile (General); 40th percentile (OBC/SC/ST) | Dental Council of India |
| BAMS (Ayurveda) | 50th percentile (General); 40th percentile (OBC/SC/ST) | NCISM |
| BHMS (Homeopathy) | 50th percentile (General); 40th percentile (OBC/SC/ST) | NCH |
| BUMS (Unani) | 50th percentile (General); 40th percentile (OBC/SC/ST) | NCISM |
| BSMS (Siddha) | 50th percentile (General); 40th percentile (OBC/SC/ST) | NCISM |
| BVSc and AH (Veterinary) | As per Veterinary Council; uses NEET score | Veterinary Council of India |
| B.Sc (Hons) Nursing | Uses NEET score in some states | State Nursing Council |
Qualifying NEET UG (crossing the minimum qualifying percentile) makes a candidate eligible for counselling. However, getting an actual government MBBS seat requires meeting significantly higher standards.
| Requirement Details | |
| Qualify NEET UG 2027 | Score above the qualifying cutoff for your category |
| All India Rank | Competitive rank depending on state and college (see cutoff data) |
| Class 12 Percentage | Already met if NEET eligibility criteria are met |
| Domicile (State Quota) | Must be a domicile of the state for 85% state quota seats |
| Category Certificate | Must be current and valid for reserved category seats |
| Quota Percentage of Seats Counselling Authority Who Can Apply | |||
| All India Quota (AIQ) | 15% of government college seats | MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) | All candidates regardless of domicile |
| State Quota | 85% of government college seats | State counselling authorities | Domicile candidates of that state (typically) |
| Central Institutions (AIIMS, JIPMER, etc.) | All seats | MCC | All candidates |
| Deemed Universities | All seats | Individual institutions | All candidates |
Candidates from any state can compete for AIQ seats at any government college in India. State quota seats are primarily for domicile candidates of that state, with specific reservation policies varying by state.
Mistake 1: Assuming no minimum marks in Class 12 are needed. Unlike JEE Main, NEET UG requires 50 percent in PCB for General category and 40 percent for reserved categories. This is verified at the time of admission, not at the time of appearing in the exam. A candidate who qualifies NEET but has below 50 percent in Class 12 PCB cannot get a government MBBS seat.
Mistake 2: Not checking if Biology is a full subject or elective. If Biology was taken as an elective or additional subject without being in the main stream, some boards may list it differently on the marksheet. Verify with your school that Biology appears with full marks on your Class 12 marksheet and is treated as a main subject.
Mistake 3: Assuming state domicile equals nationwide eligibility. Domicile status matters for state quota seats. A Maharashtra domicile candidate can compete for AIQ seats in any state but can only claim Maharashtra state quota seats through Maharashtra counselling. Understanding this distinction is critical for counselling strategy.
Mistake 4: Confusing NRI qualification requirement with Indian board requirement. NRI candidates who studied from CBSE-affiliated schools abroad (in Gulf countries, etc.) typically need no equivalence certificate. However, those who studied from IB, IGCSE, or local foreign board schools must obtain the AIU equivalence certificate before applying.
Mistake 5: Not verifying category certificate validity. OBC-NCL and EWS certificates must be recent (typically issued within the year of admission). An OBC certificate from 2022 may not be accepted for NEET 2027 admissions. Get updated certificates before beginning the counselling process.
Q1. Is there a maximum age limit for NEET UG 2027? No. As per current NTA and NMC rules, there is no upper age limit for NEET UG. The minimum age of 17 years (as of December 31, 2027) is the only age-related requirement.
Q2. Can a student who scored 45 percent in Class 12 PCB (General category) appear for NEET 2027? No. General category candidates need a minimum of 50 percent in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology aggregate in Class 12. A candidate with 45 percent does not meet the minimum eligibility requirement. However, if the candidate belongs to OBC-NCL, SC, or ST category, 40 percent is sufficient.
Q3. Is there any limit on how many times I can appear for NEET UG? No. There is no attempt limit for NEET UG following the Supreme Court's 2017 ruling. Candidates can appear as many times as they wish, provided they meet the age and educational qualification criteria.
Q4. Can a PCM student (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics without Biology) appear for NEET UG? No. Biology or Biotechnology is a compulsory subject in Class 12 for NEET UG eligibility. A pure PCM student without Biology in Class 12 is not eligible. However, if the PCM student also took Biology as an additional subject and it appears on their marksheet, they may be eligible.
Q5. I completed Class 12 from the CBSE Dubai centre. Am I eligible for NEET UG 2027? Yes. CBSE-affiliated schools outside India are recognised boards. Your Class 12 qualification from a CBSE Dubai centre is valid for NEET UG eligibility. No AIU equivalence certificate is needed.
Q6. Can I appear for NEET UG if I am currently repeating Class 12? Yes. If you are appearing for Class 12 exams in 2027 (whether for the first time or repeating), you are eligible to appear for NEET UG 2027. You must produce your final qualifying marksheet at the time of admission.
Q7. What is the eligibility for AIIMS specifically through NEET? There is no separate eligibility for AIIMS. AIIMS uses NEET UG scores exclusively. AIIMS seats are allocated through MCC AIQ counselling. The only additional requirement for AIIMS New Delhi is scoring exceptionally high (AIR in the top 50 to 100 range for General category).
