You have prepared for months. You have read NCERT line by line, solved PYQs from 2016 to 2026, practiced mock tests under timed conditions, and revised your high-frequency chapters. All of that preparation converges in 3 hours on a single May afternoon. No error on exam day, however small, should cost you marks that your preparation deserved to earn.
The most preventable exam day disasters include arriving after the gate closes and being denied entry, forgetting a required document, filling the OMR sheet incorrectly and having responses not count, carrying a prohibited item that triggers a security alert, or not knowing the biometric verification process and spending anxious minutes at the entry checkpoint.
This page eliminates every one of these risks with the complete NEET UG 2027 exam day guidance: documents checklist, reporting time and gate closing schedule, prohibited items list, OMR sheet filling rules and common errors, biometric verification process, dress code guidelines, what happens from arrival to the first question, and a day-before preparation checklist.
All guidance is based on NTA's official NEET UG 2026 instructions and NEET 2026 exam conduct rules. The 2027 process is expected to be identical unless changes are announced in the official Information Bulletin.
Bookmark this page. In the days leading up to NEET UG 2027, this page will be updated with the official admit card release announcement and any final NTA instructions issued before the exam.

The admit card is the most critical document. It must be:
If any detail on the admit card is incorrect, contact NTA at neet@nta.ac.in before the exam day. On exam day itself, inform the centre invigilator; however, errors discovered on exam day have very limited resolution options.
Carry 2 to 3 printed copies of the admit card. One copy will be collected by the invigilator at the hall.
NEET UG is conducted in one shift across India. Gate closure is absolute and non-negotiable.
| Time Event | |
| 12:00 PM | Recommended arrival window begins |
| 12:30 PM | Centre gates open |
| 1:15 PM | Biometric verification typically begins for seated candidates |
| 1:30 PM | Centre gates close absolutely; no candidate admitted after this |
| 1:45 PM | Hall entry closes |
| 1:45 PM to 2:00 PM | OMR sheet and question paper distribution; candidates fill personal details |
| 2:00 PM | Exam clock starts |
| 5:00 PM | Exam ends; OMR collected |
Why arrival by 12:30 PM is critical:
NEET 2026 was conducted at 5,400+ centres across India with 22.05 lakh candidates. At a centre with 300 to 500 candidates, the document verification and biometric queue alone takes 30 to 45 minutes. Arriving at 1:15 PM means you are still in the biometric queue when gates close at 1:30 PM. You will be denied entry.
Plan for travel disruptions. If your centre is in a different city, reach the city the previous evening. If your centre is in your city but requires a long commute, plan for traffic delays, particularly on a Sunday afternoon. The first Sunday of May is a regular working day for much of the transport infrastructure; factor in actual travel conditions.
All items below are prohibited inside the examination hall. Carrying any of these may result in denial of entry, disqualification, or registration of an FIR under applicable laws.
| Item Notes | |
| Mobile phones (any type) | Including switched-off phones; must be deposited outside |
| Smartwatches | Any watch with digital display or data storage |
| Fitness bands / activity trackers | Including those without screens |
| Bluetooth earphones or earbuds | Including those in carrying cases |
| Calculators | Scientific, programmable, or simple calculators all prohibited |
| Tablets, laptops, e-readers | All computing devices |
| Digital cameras | Including camera embedded in spectacle frames |
| Electronic pens or styli | Even those without connectivity |
| USB drives, memory cards | No storage devices of any kind |
| Portable speakers | Including Bluetooth speakers |
| Item Notes | |
| Personal pens (gel, felt-tip, fountain) | Only blue/black ballpoint permitted, which you bring and keep |
| Pencils | Not permitted for OMR filling |
| White-out / correction fluid | Absolutely prohibited for OMR corrections |
| Eraser | No erasing permitted on OMR sheets |
| Scale, ruler, geometry set | Not needed; no drawing required |
| Graph paper | Not needed |
| Personal rough paper | Rough sheet is provided by NTA at the centre |
| Printed study notes, books | No reference material of any kind |
| Item Notes | |
| All wristwatches | Both digital and analog; no exceptions |
| Rings (metallic) | May trigger security equipment |
| Large hair accessories | Metallic pins or clips; discretion of invigilator |

| Item Notes | |
| Packaged food or snacks | Not permitted inside the hall |
| Coloured drinks or juices | Not permitted |
| Plain transparent water bottle | Permitted (plain water only, no flavoured drinks) |
About food and water outside the hall: NTA centres in 2026 were required to have drinking water available at or near the centre. Candidates who carry a transparent water bottle can keep it at their seat inside the hall. Do not carry any non-transparent containers.
NTA introduced formal biometric verification processes for NEET from 2023 onwards, and expanded the scope of biometric capture in 2026. The process involves:
1. Document Check (First Checkpoint, at Gate) Security personnel check your admit card and photo ID at the outer gate. This is the first verification point. Show both documents clearly without delay.
2. Photograph Pasting and Attendance (Second Checkpoint, at Hall Entry) At the hall entry, the invigilator checks your admit card and photo ID again. You will be asked to paste one passport-size photograph on the attendance sheet in the designated box. Sign the attendance sheet in the presence of the invigilator.
3. Biometric Capture (Fingerprint and/or Photograph) NTA captures fingerprint impressions (one or both hands) and in some centres, a live photograph, at the hall entry point. In NEET 2026, NTA issued a revised advisory providing alternative biometric verification for candidates whose fingerprints could not be captured accurately due to skin conditions, injuries, or worn fingerprints.
If your fingerprint scan fails:
4. OMR Sheet Receipt and Seating After biometric capture, you are directed to your assigned seat. The invigilator will distribute the OMR answer sheet before 2:00 PM.
The OMR answer sheet is the single most technically important physical item in the NEET exam. Errors in OMR filling are among the most common reasons for avoidable score loss.
Personal Information Section: Roll number, paper code, date of birth, name, centre code, and other administrative details. This must be filled completely before 2:00 PM.
Answer Section: Bubble grids for all 200 questions. Four options (A, B, C, D) per question. Fill the correct bubble for your answer.
Candidate Details Strip: Some OMR sheets have a bottom strip that is retained by the candidate after the invigilator detaches it. This contains the candidate's identifying information and confirms OMR registration.
Use only blue or black ballpoint pen. This is non-negotiable. Pencil marks are not reliably read by OMR scanners. Gel pens can smear if OMR is scanned immediately. Felt-tip markers may bleed through the sheet. Only standard ballpoint pens produce the mark quality required.
Fill bubbles completely. The bubble must be filled darkly and completely. A half-filled bubble may be read as unattempted. A faintly filled bubble may not register at all.
Do not use correction fluid or eraser. There is no way to reverse a filled bubble using correction fluid without permanently damaging the OMR sheet. If you change your mind, draw a clear line through the incorrect bubble and fill the correct one. Excessive overwriting on multiple bubbles in the same question may cause scanning confusion; check the 2027 official instructions for the exact correction procedure.
Fill the paper code correctly. The paper code (e.g., Code 12) is printed on your question booklet. You must fill the same code in the designated section of the OMR sheet. Filling the wrong code may cause your responses to be evaluated against the wrong answer key.
Section B: Do not fill more than 10 bubbles per subject. Section B requires answering any 10 of 15 questions. If you fill 11 or 12 bubbles in Section B for any subject, refer to the 2027 Information Bulletin for how NTA handles this. In 2026, the instruction was that only a specific subset would be evaluated. The safest practice is to never exceed 10 filled responses in any subject's Section B.
In the final 5 minutes (5:55 PM to 6:00 PM), verify:
You cannot take the OMR sheet or question booklet home. Both are collected by invigilators at 5:00 PM. The question booklet may or may not be retained by the candidate (this varies by year; check the 2027 bulletin). NTA releases scanned OMR images on the official portal after the exam for candidates to verify their responses.
NTA does not prescribe a formal NEET UG dress code. However, it issues security-related appearance guidelines to prevent concealment of electronic devices or prohibited items.
| Item Guidance | |
| Footwear | Open footwear (sandals, slippers) preferred; closed shoes are permitted but may be checked at security |
| Full-sleeve garments | Permitted but security may check sleeves at entry |
| Accessories | Minimal; no large metallic jewellery or accessories |
| Hair accessories | Simple, non-metallic; large metallic pins or clips should be avoided |
| Headgear | Not permitted except for religious purposes; face must be fully visible for biometric capture |
| Spectacles | Plain transparent lenses acceptable; no tinted lenses |
| Multiple layers | Security may require removing outer layers for inspection |
Comfortable clothing is the most practical choice. May afternoons are hot across most of India. Lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colours avoids overheating and security complications simultaneously.
The invigilator distributes the OMR answer sheet and the question paper booklet. Before the clock starts:
The invigilator announces the start. Begin with your planned subject sequence. The recommended sequence (Biology first, Chemistry second, Physics last) is based on subject-level efficiency: Biology is fastest and highest-scoring; Physics is slowest and requires fresh concentration.
Do not feel compelled to follow the booklet's section order. NEET's paper typically presents sections in the order Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology. You can answer questions in any order you prefer; simply track question numbers carefully when filling the OMR.
The invigilator announces the end of the exam. Stop writing immediately. Remain seated until the OMR sheet is collected. Do not attempt to take the OMR sheet or rough sheets out of the hall.
After the OMR is collected, candidates may retain the question paper booklet (confirm this from the 2027 Information Bulletin; the policy has varied between years). Candidates began leaving NEET 2026 centres after 5:15 PM once all OMR sheets were collected.
The evening before NEET UG 2027 should be entirely logistics-focused, not academic.
| Task Details | |
| Print admit card | 2 to 3 clear A4 printouts from neet.nta.nic.in |
| Verify centre location | Open Google Maps; confirm route and estimated travel time; account for Sunday afternoon traffic |
| Plan departure time | Arrive centre by 12:30 PM; deduct travel time from 12:30 PM to get departure time; add 30 minutes buffer |
| Keep photo ID ready | Place original Aadhaar or Passport in a transparent pouch |
| Prepare 6 photographs | Matching the registration photograph; white background, coloured |
| Keep 2 blue/black ballpoint pens | Buy new pens; test them to confirm smooth ink flow |
| Pack a transparent water bottle | Filled with plain water |
| Medications if needed | Prescription medications in transparent bag with doctor's prescription |
| Eat a proper meal | Do not skip meals; hunger reduces concentration during a 3-hour exam |
| Sleep by 10:00 PM | 7 to 8 hours of sleep the night before is non-negotiable for peak cognitive performance |
| No new study | Stop studying by 7:00 PM the evening before; light revision of short notes only if necessary |
| No new mock tests | Do not attempt any new mock test on the day before the exam |
| Set multiple alarms | Set 2 to 3 alarms for the morning; do not rely on a single alarm |
Candidates with Persons with Disability (PwD) status who applied for scribe assistance or compensatory time must carry additional documentation.
| Document Purpose | |
| UDID Card (Unique Disability Identity) | Must be current and valid |
| Disability Certificate from Competent Authority | Specifying disability type and percentage |
| Scribe Arrangement Letter (if applicable) | If scribe was pre-arranged through NTA portal |
PwD candidates receive 1 additional hour (total 4 hours, ending at 6:00 PM). Those with approved scribe arrangements must ensure the scribe arrives at the centre with their own valid photo ID. Any scribe-related dispute discovered on exam day has very limited resolution options.
Based on reports from students who appeared in NEET UG 2026 (May 3, 2026) from centres in Patna, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Jaipur:
Conduct was largely smooth. NTA deployed more than 2 lakh personnel including 6,000 observers and 674 city coordinators for NEET 2026, the largest NEET deployment in history. Attendance was 96.92 percent (22,05,035 of 22,79,743 registered), indicating minimal day-of disruption.
Biometric queues were longest between 12:30 PM and 1:15 PM. Candidates who arrived after 1:00 PM faced longer queues and higher stress. Candidates who arrived by 12:30 PM completed the verification process comfortably.
Provisional answer keys were released within 4 days, the fastest in recent NEET history, allowing candidates to estimate scores immediately.
Physics remained the most discussed section. Students leaving centres described Physics as lengthy and calculation-heavy. Candidates who managed their Physics time well (not spending more than 4 minutes on any single numerical) reported higher satisfaction with their overall performance.
Q1. Can I show the admit card on my mobile phone at the exam centre? No. A printed copy of the admit card is mandatory. NTA explicitly requires a physical printout. Digital display on mobile phones is not accepted, and carrying a mobile phone inside the centre is prohibited.
Q2. What happens if I arrive after the gate closes at 1:30 PM? You will be denied entry. There are no exceptions based on reason, distance, or circumstances. Plan to arrive by 12:30 PM or earlier.
Q3. Can I use a pencil to fill the OMR sheet? No. Only blue or black ballpoint pen is permitted. Pencil marks are not reliably read by OMR scanners and may result in those responses being treated as unattempted.
Q4. Can I take the question paper home after the exam? This varies by year. In NEET 2025, candidates were permitted to retain the question booklet. In NEET 2026, the policy was confirmed in the official instructions distributed on exam day. Verify from the official 2027 Instructions to Candidates sheet distributed at the centre.
Q5. What is the rough sheet policy? A physical rough sheet is provided by NTA at the centre before the exam. All rough work must be done only on this sheet. The rough sheet must be surrendered to the invigilator at the end of the exam. Do not write on the question booklet or admit card as rough work.
Q6. Is there any break during the 3-hour exam? No scheduled break is provided during the NEET UG examination. Candidates may request a restroom break from the invigilator, but the exam clock does not pause. Plan fluid intake before entering the hall accordingly.
Q7. What is the process for candidates who need a scribe? PwD candidates who applied for and received NTA approval for a scribe must have arranged the scribe through the official channel during the application process. Bringing an unapproved scribe to the centre will not be permitted. The scribe must also carry a valid photo ID and meet NTA's scribe eligibility criteria (must not be in the same academic year as the candidate).
