The RRB NTPC eligibility criteria define the minimum conditions a candidate must satisfy before applying for any post under CEN 06/2025 (Graduate) or CEN 07/2025 (Undergraduate). Verifying eligibility before applying is essential. Every year, a portion of selected candidates is disqualified during Document Verification because they applied under incorrect assumptions about age limits, qualification requirements, or category certificates. This results in forfeiting all preparation effort despite passing both CBT stages.
This page covers the complete eligibility framework for RRB NTPC 2026, including nationality conditions, post-wise educational qualifications, age limits by post, all category-wise age relaxations, medical standards, and documents required at the verification stage.
| Parameter Graduate Level (CEN 06/2025) Undergraduate Level (CEN 07/2025) | ||
| Minimum Education | Graduation in any discipline | Class 12 pass |
| Minimum Age | 18 years | 18 years |
| Maximum Age (UR) | 33 years | 33 years |
| Nationality | Indian citizen (or eligible) | Indian citizen (or eligible) |
| Age Relaxation | SC/ST: 5 years; OBC: 3 years; PwBD: 10 years+ | Same |
| Medical Fitness | Required post-selection | Required post-selection |
| Aadhaar | Mandatory for CBT 1 (2026 cycle) | Mandatory for CBT 1 (2026 cycle) |
Candidates must satisfy one of the following nationality conditions to be eligible for RRB NTPC 2026:
Candidates other than Indian citizens must produce a Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Government of India at the time of Document Verification. The certificate must be valid and in the prescribed format.

| Commercial cum Ticket Clerk | Class 12 (10+2) or its equivalent from a recognised board |
Degree recognition: Degrees and certificates must be from universities, colleges, or boards recognised by the Central Government. Degrees from unrecognised private institutions, fly-by-night universities, or state-specific institutions with disputed recognition are not valid.
Distance education: Degrees obtained through distance or correspondence programmes are valid if the institution is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) or the Distance Education Bureau. Candidates with distance education degrees should verify recognition status before applying.
Result declaration date: The educational qualification must be obtained by the date of Document Verification. Candidates who are still awaiting results at the time of DV are not eligible. RRB does not allow production of provisional degree certificates at DV; the full degree certificate or final marksheet must be produced.
Accounts/Commerce requirement: For the Junior Account Assistant cum Typist (Graduate) and Accounts Clerk cum Typist (UG) posts, the qualification is more specific. Candidates without Commerce or Accounts background should verify they meet this condition before selecting these posts in the application.
Both Graduate and Undergraduate posts carry the same age range for General category candidates.
| Condition Age | |
| Minimum age | 18 years |
| Maximum age (UR) | 33 years |
The age is calculated as of the date specified in the official notification (the notified date). For CEN 06/2025 and CEN 07/2025, the notified date was January 1, 2026. This means a candidate must have been born on or before January 1, 2008 (to be at least 18) and on or after January 2, 1993 (to not have exceeded 33 years for UR category).
Most RRB NTPC posts share the 18 to 33 years (UR) standard. However, some posts have a lower upper age limit. The Station Master post, for instance, carries an age limit of 18 to 33 years for UR, which is the same as other posts.
Always verify the post-specific age limit in the official notification PDF before applying, as Railway Recruitment Boards sometimes specify different age limits for specific posts within the same CEN.
Age relaxation is provided by the Government of India to candidates from reserved and special categories. The relaxation applies to the upper age limit of the applicable post.
| Category Age Relaxation (Added to Upper Limit) Effective Upper Age Limit | ||
| Scheduled Caste (SC) | 5 years | 38 years |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 5 years | 38 years |
| Other Backward Classes (OBC, Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 years | 36 years |
| Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwBD) -- UR | 10 years | 43 years |
| PwBD -- OBC | 13 years | 46 years |
| PwBD -- SC/ST | 15 years | 48 years |
| Ex-Servicemen (ESM) | 3 years after deducting military service from actual age | Varies |
| Divyang (Differently Abled) -- UR | 10 years | 43 years |
| Candidates domiciled in J&K (1980-1989) | 5 years | 38 years |
| Widows, Divorced Women not remarried -- UR | Up to 35 years (if UR; check notification) | Up to 35 years |
| Minorities / Economically Backward Classes | As per notification | Check notification |
OBC-NCL certificate: OBC candidates must belong to the Non-Creamy Layer and hold a valid Non-Creamy Layer certificate. The certificate must be in the Central Government format and must have been issued after April 1, 2025 (for CEN 06/2025 and CEN 07/2025). OBC certificates from State Government formats are not accepted.
Ex-Servicemen calculation: For ESM candidates, the actual age is reduced by the total period of military service. After this reduction, an additional 3 years is added to the permissible upper age limit. For example, a UR ESM candidate who served 5 years in the military and is currently 36 years old has an effective age of 36 minus 5 = 31 years, plus 3 years extra = can apply up to 34 years effective age, which exceeds 33. Since 34 is the effective permissible upper limit (33 + 3 for ESM), this candidate is eligible.
PwBD candidates: The disability must be at least 40 percent and must be certified by a competent medical authority in the prescribed format. The nature of disability must be compatible with the duties of the post applied for.
The age calculation date for RRB NTPC 2026 is the notified date mentioned in the official CEN. For CEN 06/2025 (Graduate) and CEN 07/2025 (UG), the notified date is January 1, 2026.
| Category Must Not Be Born Before Must Not Be Born After | ||
| UR | January 2, 1993 | January 1, 2008 |
| OBC (3 years relaxation) | January 2, 1990 | January 1, 2008 |
| SC/ST (5 years relaxation) | January 2, 1988 | January 1, 2008 |
| PwBD-UR (10 years) | January 2, 1983 | January 1, 2008 |
| PwBD-OBC (13 years) | January 2, 1980 | January 1, 2008 |
| PwBD-SC/ST (15 years) | January 2, 1978 | January 1, 2008 |
After Document Verification, selected candidates are subjected to a medical examination by a Railway Medical Authority. The medical standards vary by post.
Visual acuity is one of the most important medical requirements because many Railway posts involve operational duties where vision defects can create safety risks.
| Post Category Vision Standard | |
| Station Master | Vision standard A1 or A2 as specified by Railway Health Services |
| Goods Train Manager | Vision standard A2 |
| Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Junior Clerk cum Typist | Relaxed vision standards; colour vision not mandatory |
| Traffic Assistant | Vision standard as specified |
The Station Master post specifically requires candidates to be free of colour blindness. Candidates with colour vision deficiency cannot be appointed as Station Masters even if they clear all exam stages.
All posts require:
| Requirement Standard | |
| General physical fitness | No chronic disease that interferes with duties |
| Hearing | Normal hearing in both ears; no use of hearing aid |
| Speech | No significant speech impairment |
| Limb fitness | All limbs functional; no deformity incompatible with duties |
| Mental health | No active mental health condition |
PwBD candidates who meet the post-specific disability eligibility criteria are assessed under separate medical standards as defined in the notification.
Certain posts require a Typing Skill Test (TST) as a qualifying stage after CBT 2.
| Post Typing Requirement | |
| Junior Clerk cum Typist | Typing speed of 30 words per minute in English OR 25 words per minute in Hindi |
| Accounts Clerk cum Typist | Same as above |
| Senior Clerk cum Typist | Same as above |
| Junior Account Assistant cum Typist | Same as above |
The Typing Skill Test is qualifying in nature. Candidates who do not meet the typing speed requirement during the TST are disqualified from selection for that post, even if they scored high in CBT 2. Candidates applying for typing posts should begin keyboard practice well in advance.
The Station Master post requires a Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) in addition to CBT 2. The CBAT assesses aptitude for operational railway duties and is separate from the main exam.
| Feature Detail | |
| Post | Station Master only |
| Nature | Qualifying; minimum qualifying standard must be met |
| Marks count in merit | No; CBAT is qualifying |
| Test content | Aptitude for operational duties (pattern recognition, memory, speed) |
Candidates who fail the CBAT are not eligible for the Station Master post but may still be considered for other posts they have applied for, subject to their CBT 2 merit rank.
RRB NTPC does not specify a fixed limit on the number of attempts. Candidates can appear in every recruitment cycle until they exceed the upper age limit for their category. This makes RRB NTPC more accessible than exams with strict attempt caps.
| Category Effective Upper Limit Approx. Maximum Attempts (applying from age 18) | ||
| UR | 33 | 5 to 8 cycles |
| OBC | 36 | 8 to 12 cycles |
| SC/ST | 38 | 10 to 14 cycles |
| PwBD-UR | 43 | 15 to 20 cycles |
After clearing all exam stages, candidates must produce original documents along with attested copies at the DV stage.
| Document Purpose | |
| Class 10 Certificate and Marksheet | Date of birth proof and educational record |
| Class 12 Certificate and Marksheet | For UG posts: qualification proof |
| Graduation Degree and All Marksheets | For Graduate posts: qualification proof |
| SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwBD Certificate | Category verification |
| OBC Non-Creamy Layer Certificate | Issued after April 1, 2025; Central Government format |
| ESM Discharge Certificate | For Ex-Servicemen |
| Aadhaar Card | Identity and biometric verification |
| Valid Photo ID (PAN, Voter ID, Passport) | Additional identity proof |
| Passport-size Photographs | As required by the RRB |
| Character Certificate | From a Gazetted Officer or Head of Institution |
| No Objection Certificate | If currently employed in central/state government |
Applying for Graduate posts with only a Class 12 pass: This is the most common error. Some candidates assume that having applied for the UG level gives them eligibility for Graduate posts if they later graduate. This is incorrect. Eligibility is determined at the application closing date.
OBC certificate in State Government format: RRB requires the Central Government format OBC-NCL certificate specifically. A State Government format certificate is not accepted at DV.
OBC certificate issued before April 2025: The certificate must be issued after April 1, 2025, for the 2026 recruitment cycle. Older certificates are rejected.
Applying for Accounts posts without Commerce background: The Accounts Clerk cum Typist (UG) and Junior Account Assistant cum Typist (Graduate) posts have specific educational requirements related to Accounts or Commerce. Candidates without this background should not select these posts.
Assuming colour vision is not checked: For the Station Master post, colour vision is mandatory. Candidates with colour blindness should not apply for this post.
Can a final-year graduation student apply for RRB NTPC Graduate posts? No. The graduation result must be declared before the date of Document Verification. RRB does not accept provisional degree certificates at DV.
Is work experience required for RRB NTPC? No. No prior work experience is required for any RRB NTPC post.
Can I apply for both Graduate and Undergraduate level posts? Graduate and Undergraduate level posts are announced under separate CENs (CEN 06/2025 and CEN 07/2025). Candidates who meet the eligibility for both can apply for both separately.
Is there a minimum percentage in graduation for RRB NTPC Graduate posts? No minimum percentage is required in graduation for most Graduate-level posts. The exception is certain specific posts where the notification may specify additional conditions.
What happens if I am found ineligible at Document Verification? If a candidate is found ineligible at DV on any ground (age, educational qualification, category certificate), their candidature is cancelled and they are not appointed regardless of their merit rank. No appeal is generally permitted at this stage.
Eligibility data is sourced from official RRB NTPC notifications CEN 06/2025 and CEN 07/2025 published on regional RRB websites. Age calculation dates and category certificate requirements are as specified in the official notifications. Candidates must verify all conditions against the official notification PDF before applying.
