The SSC CGL application process is entirely online and is conducted through the official SSC portal at ssc.gov.in. For the 2026 cycle, the notification was originally scheduled for March 31, 2026, but has been delayed. It is now expected in May 2026. As soon as the notification is released, the application window opens simultaneously and remains open for approximately 30 days.
This page walks through every step of the application process, from creating a One-Time Registration account to final submission, including what documents are needed, what fees apply, and what mistakes to avoid.
| Event Expected Date | |
| Notification Release | May 2026 |
| Application Window Opens | With notification |
| Last Date to Apply | Approximately 30 days after notification |
| Fee Payment Deadline | Same as or one day before application closing date |
| Application Correction Window | A few days after closing (for limited fields only) |
Candidates should not wait until the last few days to apply. Server overload during the final days of the application window has caused submission failures in past cycles.
SSC introduced the One-Time Registration system to simplify repeat applications across multiple exams. Instead of entering basic details every time, candidates register once and use those stored credentials for all future SSC examinations.
The OTR profile requires the following information:
| Field Details Required | |
| Personal Details | Name (as on Class 10 certificate), date of birth, father's name, mother's name, gender |
| Contact Details | Mobile number, email address, permanent and correspondence address |
| Academic Details | Details of Class 10, Class 12, and graduation (university, year, percentage, subjects) |
| Category | General/OBC/SC/ST/EWS/PwBD/ESM as applicable |
| Identity Details | Aadhaar number (preferred) or other valid ID |
Once OTR is complete, these details carry forward automatically to every SSC exam application. Changes in the profile can be made but are subject to document verification restrictions.
After completing the OTR, the next step is to fill out the CGL-specific application form.
| Category Application Fee | |
| General (UR) and OBC (Male) | Rs 100 |
| SC, ST, PwBD (all genders) | Exempted (No fee) |
| ESM (Ex-Servicemen) | Exempted (No fee) |
| All Female Candidates | Exempted (No fee) |
The fee of Rs 100 can be paid through:
Candidates paying through Challan must do so within the deadline and allow 24 to 48 hours for the payment to reflect in the portal before final submission.
Candidates do not upload most documents during the application stage. However, these documents must be kept ready for the application form and for document verification at the time of final selection.
| Document Purpose | |

| Signature (in black ink on white paper) | Upload as per specifications |

| Size | 20 KB to 50 KB |
| Dimensions | 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm (passport size) |
| Background | White or light background |
| Date of photograph | Taken recently (not more than 3 months old) |
| Specification Requirement | |
| Format | JPEG or JPG |

Post preferences in SSC CGL are important because they determine which posts you are considered for if you qualify. A few guidelines:
The correction window after the application deadline allows changes only for limited fields such as photograph, signature, and examination centre. Post preferences, name, date of birth, and category cannot be changed after submission.
SSC provides a correction facility for a limited period after the application deadline. During this window, candidates can correct errors in:
Fields that cannot be corrected include name, date of birth, category, and post preferences. Candidates must therefore double-check all entries before final submission.
Uploading a photograph that does not meet specifications: An oversized image, a photograph with a coloured background, or an old photograph not taken recently can lead to rejection of the application or problems during document verification.
Mismatching name on the form and certificates: The name entered in the OTR must exactly match the name on the Class 10 certificate. Any discrepancy can create issues during document verification.
Wrong post preference selection: Candidates sometimes select posts for which they are not eligible by age or educational qualification. This leads to disqualification even if the candidate scores well.
Last-minute application submission: The SSC portal faces high traffic on the final days. Submitting at the last minute risks failed transactions and missed deadlines.
Not saving the confirmation page: After successful submission, candidates must download and save the confirmation page or application form printout. This serves as proof of application if any issue arises later.
Claiming wrong category: Candidates who claim OBC benefit must ensure they have a valid Non-Creamy Layer certificate. Claiming reservation benefits without proper documentation leads to disqualification at the document verification stage.
After submitting, candidates can log in to their SSC OTR account and check application status under the "My Applications" section. The status will show whether the application has been received, the fee has been processed, and the application is complete.
Once the application window closes, SSC begins processing applications. The admit card (hall ticket) is released a few weeks before the exam date. The admit card contains:
For complete information on what to carry and what to expect at the exam centre, visit the SSC CGL Exam Day Guidance page.
If the notification has not yet been released, this time is best used for preparation. Every day of preparation before the exam matters.
Can I apply for SSC CGL without OTR? No. OTR (One-Time Registration) is mandatory before applying for any SSC exam. It is a one-time process and does not need to be repeated.
What happens if I make an error in my application? SSC provides a correction window after the closing date. Only certain fields can be corrected. For critical fields like name and date of birth, no correction is permitted.
Is the application fee refundable if I do not appear in the exam? No. The application fee is non-refundable under any circumstances.
Can I apply for SSC CGL from mobile? Yes. The SSC portal is accessible on mobile browsers, but it is recommended to use a desktop or laptop for uploading documents and completing the form to avoid errors.
What is the difference between registration and application? Registration refers to the OTR process, which creates your SSC account. Application refers to filling out the CGL-specific form and paying the fee for that particular exam cycle.
Application process details are based on the SSC CGL 2025 notification and established SSC procedures. Specific dates, fee amounts, and form fields for 2026 will be confirmed in the official notification at ssc.gov.in.
