Understanding the SSC CGL eligibility criteria before applying is not optional. Every year, a significant number of applications are rejected during document verification because candidates either miscalculate their age, apply with unrecognised educational qualifications, or fail to attach category certificates in the correct format. This page covers all eligibility parameters for SSC CGL 2026 in detail so that no candidate applies under a wrong assumption.
The eligibility criteria for SSC CGL 2026 are set by the Staff Selection Commission and will be officially confirmed in the notification expected in May 2026 at ssc.gov.in. All details on this page are based on the established eligibility framework from previous official notifications and the SSC CGL 2025 notification.

Candidates applying for SSC CGL 2026 must satisfy one of the following nationality conditions:
Candidates belonging to categories other than Indian citizens must possess a Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Government of India. This certificate must be presented at the time of document verification.
A bachelor's degree from any recognised university or equivalent institution is the minimum educational qualification required for most SSC CGL posts. There is no minimum percentage requirement in graduation for general posts.
| Post Required Qualification | |
| All Group B and C posts (general) | Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university |

| Statistical Investigator Grade II | Bachelor's degree with Statistics as one of the subjects |
The SSC CGL age limit varies depending on the post applied for. Candidates must verify the age requirement for each post before selecting their post preferences in the application form.
| Age Group Posts Covered | |
| 18 to 27 years | Junior Secretariat Assistant (UDC), Auditor (CAG), Accountant (CAG), Tax Assistant (CBDT/CBIC), Upper Division Clerk |

The cutoff date for age calculation is typically August 1 of the recruitment year. For SSC CGL 2026, the exact cutoff date will be specified in the official notification.
The Government of India provides age relaxation to candidates belonging to reserved categories. The relaxation is applied to the upper age limit of the post.
| Category Age Relaxation | |
| Scheduled Caste (SC) | 5 years |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 5 years |
| Other Backward Classes (OBC) | 3 years |
| Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwBD - Unreserved) | 10 years |
| PwBD - OBC | 13 years |
| PwBD - SC/ST | 15 years |
| Ex-Servicemen (ESM) - General | 3 years (after deducting military service from actual age) |

| ESM - SC/ST | 8 years |
| Meritorious Sports Persons - General | 5 years |
| Meritorious Sports Persons - OBC | 8 years |
| Meritorious Sports Persons - SC/ST | 10 years |
Age relaxation is cumulative for PwBD candidates belonging to SC, ST, or OBC categories, subject to the maximum limit specified. Candidates must submit valid and up-to-date category certificates issued by competent authorities. An incorrectly formatted certificate or one issued after the closing date of the application can lead to disqualification.
Physical standards are not required for all SSC CGL posts. They apply specifically to candidates applying for posts that involve enforcement, investigation, or field duties.
| Parameter Male (General) Female (General) | ||
| Height | 157.5 cm (minimum) | 152 cm (minimum) |
| Chest (Unexpanded) | 76 cm | Not applicable |
| Chest (Expanded) | 81 cm (minimum) | Not applicable |
| Weight | Proportionate to height | Proportionate to height |
Relaxations in height and chest measurements are provided for candidates from specific tribal communities and hill regions. The exact relaxation details are published in the official notification.
Candidates shortlisted for posts with physical requirements must also clear a Physical Efficiency Test. The test consists of:
PwBD candidates who are certified by a Government Civil Surgeon as permanently unfit for certain physical activities are exempt from the relevant physical standard requirements, subject to medical certification.
SSC CGL does not impose any cap on the number of times a candidate can appear. Candidates can apply in every annual cycle until they exceed the upper age limit for their chosen post. This makes SSC CGL one of the few national-level recruitment exams without a fixed attempt limit.
Indicative maximum attempts based on age (assuming the exam is taken at the earliest eligible age):
| Category Approximate Maximum Attempts | |
| General (UR) | 10 to 14 |
| OBC | 13 to 17 |
| SC/ST | 14 to 19 |
| PwBD (UR) | 20 to 24 |
| PwBD (SC/ST) | 25 to 29 |
Applying with an unrecognised degree: Degrees from institutions not recognised by UGC or state governments are not accepted. Always verify the recognition status of your university before applying.
Incorrect age calculation: Candidates who are close to the upper age limit must calculate their age precisely using the cutoff date given in the notification, not the exam date or application date.
Not reading post preferences carefully: Age limits and educational requirements differ by post. Selecting a post for which you are ineligible at the application stage wastes an opportunity.
Claiming OBC relaxation without a Non-Creamy Layer certificate: OBC age relaxation is available only to candidates who belong to the Non-Creamy Layer and possess a valid Non-Creamy Layer certificate.
Submitting outdated category certificates: Certificates must be valid on the closing date of the application. Certificates that expire before the closing date are not accepted.
Follow these steps before filling in the application form:
All eligibility information is based on official SSC CGL notifications available at ssc.gov.in. Criteria may be updated in the 2026 notification. Candidates must verify all details against the official notification before applying.
