Exam day preparation is as important as syllabus preparation. Every year, candidates who have prepared well face unnecessary difficulty at the examination centre because they missed a document, carried a prohibited item, or misunderstood the reporting time. The Staff Selection Commission enforces strict entry and conduct rules at all SSC CGL exam centres, and violations can result in denial of entry or cancellation of candidature.
This page covers everything a candidate needs to know before, during, and after the SSC CGL Tier 1 exam, sourced from official SSC guidelines and notices issued for the 2025 cycle.
The SSC CGL Tier 1 exam is conducted in multiple shifts each day across multiple dates. The exact shift to which a candidate is assigned is mentioned on their admit card.
| Shift Reporting Time Entry Gate Closes Exam Start | |||
| Shift 1 | 7:30 AM | 8:00 AM | 9:00 AM |
| Shift 2 | 11:30 AM | 12:00 PM | 12:30 PM |
| Shift 3 | 3:30 PM | 4:00 PM | 4:30 PM |
Entry gates are closed at the time mentioned on the admit card. Candidates who arrive after the gate closure time are not permitted to enter under any circumstances, regardless of the reason for delay. The exam is conducted as a Computer-Based Test (CBT), and the system activates at the scheduled start time.
Candidates are strongly advised to reach the examination centre at least 60 to 90 minutes before the reporting time to account for travel delays, parking, security queues, and biometric verification.
Every candidate must carry the following documents to the examination centre on exam day. Entry is not permitted without these.
| Document Details | |
| Printed Admit Card | Original printout; digital copy on phone is not accepted |
| Valid Original Photo ID Proof | One of the accepted IDs listed below |
| Passport-size Photographs | Two recent colour photographs (3 cm x 3.5 cm or as per admit card specifications) |
Any one of the following valid, original government-issued ID cards is acceptable:
If the photo ID does not carry the date of birth, the candidate must additionally carry an original document that has the date of birth printed on it (such as a Class 10 marksheet or birth certificate) to match with the date of birth on the admit card.
Affidavits in support of date of birth are not accepted as valid identity documents.
A basic black or blue ballpoint pen (without any digital features) is permitted and sometimes required for signing attendance sheets at the centre.
The Staff Selection Commission enforces a strict list of prohibited items. If any of these are found with a candidate, they may be disqualified and face legal action under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.
SSC introduced a multi-point biometric verification process at exam centres. Candidates should be aware of the following checkpoints:
Entry checkpoint: Candidates present their admit card and photo ID. Biometric fingerprint capture and live photo verification are conducted.
Seated in exam hall: A webcam positioned at the workstation records a live photograph of the candidate during the exam. Candidates must maintain an upright posture with their face clearly visible to the webcam throughout the exam.
End of exam: Candidates may be photographed again before exiting.
Candidates must not wear face masks or any face covering during the exam. Full face visibility is mandatory at all times for biometric purposes. If a candidate has a medical reason for face covering, they must declare this in advance to the centre authorities.
The name and date of birth on the photo ID must exactly match the information on the admit card. If there is a mismatch, the candidate must carry a supporting certificate (such as a marksheet or gazette notification showing both names) to explain the discrepancy.
SSC does not prescribe a formal dress code but issues guidance on appropriate clothing to facilitate security checks.

Once inside the examination hall, candidates must follow these rules:
Before the exam starts:
During the exam:
At the end of the exam:
The SSC CGL Tier 1 admit card is typically released 4 to 5 days before the exam date. For the 2025 cycle, the admit cards were released in phases, with day-1 admit cards available on September 3, 2025, for a September 12 exam start.
To download the admit card:
Print the admit card on A4 paper in a clear, legible format. Do not print it on glossy paper or use a print that smudges.
Before the exam day, verify the following on the downloaded admit card:
| Field What to Check | |
| Candidate Name | Must match the name on your photo ID exactly |
| Registration Number | Verify it is your correct registration |
| Exam Date and Shift | Note the date, shift number, reporting time, and entry gate closing time |
| Exam Centre | Note the name, address, and PIN of the centre |
| Photograph | Should be clearly visible and match your current appearance |
| Date of Birth | Must match your date of birth document |
| Category | Verify your category is correctly reflected |
If any detail is incorrect on the admit card, contact the SSC regional office or helpline immediately. Do not assume errors will be corrected automatically.
Preparing the night before eliminates morning panic and ensures you arrive at the centre without unnecessary stress.
Candidates with benchmark disabilities who require a scribe or additional time must:
PwBD candidates who are certified as permanently unfit for certain physical activities are exempt from the DEST typing test, subject to a medical certificate from a Government Civil Surgeon.
Do not share questions. Under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, sharing memory-based questions on social media, messaging apps, or any public platform is a punishable offence. Candidates should exercise caution in this regard.
Retain your admit card. The admit card is needed for all subsequent stages including Tier 2, document verification, and final appointment. Do not discard it.
Check the SSC website for the answer key. The provisional answer key is usually released within one week of the exam conclusion. Candidates can review the answer key and submit objections against incorrect answers during the designated window.
Start Tier 2 preparation immediately. If you are confident of clearing Tier 1, begin Tier 2 preparation without waiting for the Tier 1 result. The gap between Tier 1 result and Tier 2 exam is typically two to three months. Candidates who begin early have a significant advantage.
Can I carry a water bottle to the exam centre? A transparent water bottle is permitted at the entry point but may be inspected before being allowed inside the hall. Check specific instructions on your admit card.
What if I forget my admit card at home? SSC has a strict policy: candidates without a printed admit card are not allowed to enter. There are no exceptions. Always keep a printout ready the night before.
Can I use the washroom during the exam? Yes, but you must inform the invigilator and will be accompanied by staff. The exam timer does not stop. Keep washroom breaks short.
Is a digital Aadhaar (on mobile) accepted? No. Only original physical documents are accepted. A digital copy on a phone or a screenshot is not valid.
What if my admit card has a wrong name or centre? Contact the SSC regional office immediately. Bring supporting documents on exam day explaining the discrepancy.
Exam day guidelines on this page are based on official SSC notices and instructions published for the 2025 exam cycle, including the official notice dated July 21, 2025. Specific instructions for the 2026 cycle will be updated once the admit card is released. Always read the instructions printed on your admit card, as they take precedence.
