The Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level examination, commonly called SSC CGL, is one of the most sought-after government recruitment exams in India. Every year, more than 25 lakh candidates compete for Group B and Group C posts in central government ministries, departments, and organisations. For the 2026 cycle, the Tier 1 examination is expected to be conducted in June/July 2026, making this the right time to begin structured preparation.
This page brings together all the important information you need about SSC CGL Tier 1, from exam dates and eligibility to syllabus, pattern, cutoff history, and preparation resources. Each section links to a dedicated page where you can find deeper coverage of that topic.
SSC CGL Tier 1 is a computer-based qualifying examination. Although the marks scored in Tier 1 are not counted in the final merit list, clearing the Tier 1 cutoff is mandatory before a candidate can appear in the Tier 2 examination. The final selection for all posts is determined purely by performance in Tier 2.
The exam is conducted online in multiple shifts across several days. Because papers vary across shifts in difficulty, the Staff Selection Commission applies a normalisation formula to standardise all scores before determining cutoffs.

The syllabus covers four subjects. A quick breakdown is given below.
General Intelligence and Reasoning covers both verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Key topics include analogies, series completion, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, syllogisms, and visual reasoning such as paper folding, mirror images, and embedded figures.
General Awareness is the most unpredictable section. It draws from history, geography, economics, polity, science, and current affairs. Questions typically cover events from the past six to eight months before the exam date.
Quantitative Aptitude tests numerical ability across arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and data interpretation. Topics such as percentage, ratio and proportion, time and work, speed-distance-time, and profit-loss consistently carry high weightage.
English Language and Comprehension includes reading comprehension, fill in the blanks, error spotting, sentence rearrangement, cloze test, and vocabulary questions such as synonyms, antonyms, and idioms.
For a subject-by-subject breakdown with topic-wise weightage, see the SSC CGL Tier 1 Syllabus page. You can also track your syllabus coverage with the SSC CGL Syllabus Tracker.
To appear in SSC CGL 2026, candidates must satisfy three core requirements.
Nationality: Candidates must be Indian citizens. Subjects of Nepal or Bhutan, Tibetan refugees who arrived before January 1, 1962, and persons of Indian origin who migrated from specific countries are also eligible under prescribed conditions.
Educational Qualification: A bachelor's degree from any recognised university is the minimum requirement for most posts. Certain specialised posts such as Junior Statistical Officer require graduation with Statistics as a subject and a minimum of 60% marks in Mathematics at Class 12 level.
Age Limit: The age range varies by post. Most Group C posts fall in the 18 to 27 years bracket, Group B posts allow candidates up to 30 or 32 years, and the JSO post allows candidates up to 32 years. Age relaxation of 5 years is available for SC/ST candidates, 3 years for OBC, and up to 10 years for PwD candidates.
The complete post-wise age limit and category-wise relaxation details are covered on the SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria page.
Applications for SSC CGL are accepted entirely online through the SSC portal at ssc.gov.in. Candidates who have not registered previously must complete the One-Time Registration (OTR) process before filling out the exam application form. The OTR stores basic personal and academic details and does not need to be repeated in future cycles.
The key steps involve completing OTR, filling the application form, uploading a photograph and signature, selecting post preferences, and paying the application fee. The fee is Rs 100 for General and OBC male candidates. Women, SC, ST, PwD, and ESM category candidates are exempted from the fee.
Step-by-step guidance with screenshots is available on the SSC CGL Application Process page.
Since Tier 1 is qualifying in nature, the cutoff primarily determines who advances to Tier 2. The table below shows the Tier 1 cutoff for general posts across recent years for the Unreserved category.
| Exam Year UR Cutoff (Other Posts) OBC SC ST EWS | |||||
| SSC CGL 2025 | 136.83 | 130.36 | 114.97 | 106.36 | 127.41 |
| SSC CGL 2024 | 153.18 | 146.23 | -- | -- | 142.01 |
| SSC CGL 2023 | 150.04 | -- | -- | -- | -- |
Note: All cutoff scores are normalised marks. Candidates targeting AAO and JSO posts face significantly higher cutoffs than those targeting other Group B and C posts.
Detailed year-wise and post-wise cutoff analysis is available on the SSC CGL Cutoff page.
Understand the exam pattern first. Since there is no sectional time limit, candidates can manage their time across sections as they choose. Most toppers recommend starting with General Awareness and Reasoning to build momentum, then tackling English and Quantitative Aptitude.
Follow the syllabus strictly. Do not prepare topics that are not listed in the official syllabus. Use the SSC CGL Syllabus Tracker to mark topics as complete and identify gaps in preparation.
Practice with full-length mock tests. Attempting mock tests under real exam conditions is the most effective way to improve speed and accuracy. The SSC CGL Tier 1 Test Series on Aspirant Mitraa includes 400 tests covering topic-wise practice, subject-wise tests, and full-length mock examinations. This gives candidates the option to strengthen individual topics before attempting full papers.
Analyse previous year question papers. PYQs reveal the actual difficulty level and frequently tested topics. Download and solve previous year papers from the SSC CGL PYQ page.
Study current affairs systematically. General Awareness accounts for 25 questions and 50 marks. The last six to eight months of current events must be covered before the exam date.
Be careful with negative marking. A wrong answer costs 0.50 marks. Avoid guessing on questions where you have no idea of the answer. Accuracy matters as much as speed.
SSC CGL recruits candidates for a wide range of Group B and Group C posts. Some of the prominent ones include:
| Post Department Group | ||
| Assistant Audit Officer | Indian Audit and Accounts Department | Group B Gazetted |
| Assistant Section Officer | Central Secretariat Service | Group B |

The expected number of vacancies for the 2026 cycle is around 15,000 posts, consistent with recent recruitment trends.
On the day of the exam, candidates must carry their admit card, a valid photo identity proof (Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, or Passport), and a passport-size photograph. Electronic devices including mobile phones, smartwatches, and calculators are strictly prohibited inside the examination hall.
Candidates are advised to report to the examination centre at least 30 minutes before the scheduled start time. Entry is generally not permitted after the reporting deadline. Full dos and don'ts for exam day are covered on the SSC CGL Exam Day Guidance page.
Is Tier 1 marks counted in the final merit? No. Tier 1 is qualifying in nature. Only Tier 2 marks determine the final merit list and post allocation.
How many attempts are allowed in SSC CGL? There is no fixed limit on attempts. Candidates can appear in every cycle until they exceed the upper age limit for their category and preferred post.
Is there sectional timing in Tier 1? No. The 60-minute time limit applies to the entire paper. Candidates can move freely between sections.
Can final-year graduation students apply? Yes, with the condition that the degree certificate must be produced at the time of document verification.
