What is the CA Final exam?
CA Final is the third and terminal examination of the Chartered Accountancy programme conducted by ICAI. Clearing both groups of CA Final, combined with completing the two-year Articleship, makes a candidate eligible for ICAI membership and the Chartered Accountant designation.
How many papers are there in CA Final under the new scheme?
Under the ICAI New Scheme applicable from May 2024, CA Final has six papers organized into two groups of three papers each:
How many sessions are there per year for CA Final?
CA Final is held twice a year: in May and in November. Unlike CA Foundation and CA Intermediate which have three sessions per year, the CA Final retains the two-session structure.
What is IBS (Integrated Business Solutions)?
IBS is Paper 6 of the CA Final under the new scheme. It is a four-hour, open-book, multidisciplinary case study examination that tests the ability to integrate knowledge from all CA Final subjects (Financial Reporting, Advanced Financial Management, Auditing, Direct Tax, Indirect Tax, Corporate Laws, Strategic Management, and Ethics) in the context of a complex business scenario. IBS does not exist at the CA Intermediate level; it is unique to CA Final.
Are there MCQs in any CA Final paper?
No. Unlike CA Intermediate where every paper has a 30-mark MCQ section, CA Final papers 1 to 5 are entirely subjective. Paper 6 (IBS) is also entirely subjective. There are no MCQs at the CA Final level.
What are the eligibility conditions for CA Final?
To appear for CA Final, a candidate must have:
When can Articleship begin under the new scheme?
Under the new scheme, Articleship begins only after both groups of CA Intermediate are cleared and ICITSS (the pre-Articleship training) is completed. This is a fundamental change from the old scheme where Articleship could begin after passing just one Intermediate group.
How long is the Articleship under the new scheme?
Two years. Under the old scheme, Articleship was three years.
Is Advanced ICITSS the same as the ICITSS done before starting Articleship?
No. They are two separate training programmes:
What are SPOM sets and how many must be completed?
SPOM (Self-Paced Online Modules) are four sets (A, B, C, D) of online learning modules with assessment tests:
New scheme candidates (both Intermediate groups cleared after November 2023) must qualify all four sets before appearing for CA Final. Transition candidates may qualify only Sets A and B. The applicable requirement depends on the candidate's category as specified in the ICAI eligibility circular for each session.
Can I appear for CA Final while still in Articleship?
Yes, but only if you are in the final six months of your two-year Articleship as of the first day of the exam month. Candidates must complete the full Articleship period before applying for ICAI membership.
What is the registration fee for CA Final?
The registration fee is Rs. 22,000 for both groups for Indian students. Students from J&K and the eight North-Eastern states receive a 75 percent concession.
What is the exam form fee for CA Final?
Rs. 3,800 for both groups and Rs. 2,000 for a single group per session.
How many sessions are available within the five-year registration validity?
Two sessions per year over five years gives up to ten attempts within the registration validity period.
Can I register for only one group of CA Final?
Yes. Single group registration is available. The fee differs between single-group and both-group registration.
What documents are needed for CA Final registration?
Core documents include: CA Intermediate pass certificate showing both groups cleared, Articleship registration certificate, Advanced ICITSS completion certificate, SPOM qualification evidence, Class 10 mark sheet, Class 12 mark sheet, photograph, and signature. For the complete list, visit the CA Final Application Process page.
What is the duration of each CA Final paper?
Papers 1 to 5 are three hours each. Paper 6 (IBS) is four hours. All papers are held in the afternoon session starting at 2:00 PM.
What is the open-book format of IBS?
In the IBS examination, candidates are permitted to carry specified ICAI study material (specific books and bare acts listed in the ICAI notification) into the exam hall. This material may be consulted freely during the four-hour session. Personal notes, annotated material, and photocopies outside the approved list are prohibited.
Does the IBS open-book format make it easier than other CA Final papers?
No. IBS is differently demanding, not easier. The four-hour case study requires genuine integration of knowledge across all six subjects. Candidates who rely on looking up content from scratch in the permitted materials typically run out of time. The open-book facility is most useful for verifying specific provision references (Ind AS paragraph numbers, GST section numbers) rather than for understanding concepts during the exam.
What materials are permitted in the IBS exam?
ICAI specifies the exact permitted materials in the IBS notification for each session. Typically, permitted materials include ICAI study material volumes for all CA Final papers and specified bare acts. The list must be verified from the ICAI circular for each specific session; it is not identical across all sessions.
Is there any MCQ section in IBS?
No. IBS is entirely subjective. All answers are written, ranging from numerical computations to analytical opinions and structured professional responses.
Can I choose questions in CA Final papers?
ICAI typically provides internal choice in CA Final subjective papers (for example, "attempt any five out of seven questions"). The specific choice structure is printed at the beginning of each question paper. Read the instructions carefully before beginning.
What is covered in Paper 6 (IBS) and how should it be prepared?
IBS does not have a standalone syllabus. It tests the integration of all CA Final subjects: Financial Reporting, Advanced Financial Management, Advanced Auditing, Direct Tax, Indirect Tax, Corporate Laws, Strategic Management, and Ethics through a single multidisciplinary case study.
The most effective preparation for IBS is the thorough preparation of all five other Final papers. Candidates should additionally practise ICAI IBS Mock Test Papers under timed, open-book conditions to develop the case-study reading and multi-subject mapping skills required.
Does the CA Final syllabus change every year?
The core six-paper syllabus structure is stable. Papers 4 and 5 (Direct Tax and Indirect Tax) are updated annually through the Taxation Amendments Circular. Paper 1 (Financial Reporting) reflects any Ind AS updates. ICAI publishes applicability circulars before each session specifying the exact standards and provisions applicable.
Is International Taxation a new subject at CA Final that was not in Intermediate?
Yes. International Taxation (Transfer Pricing, DTAA, BEPS, Equalization Levy) is a distinct component of Paper 4 at the Final level that does not feature at the Intermediate level. These topics must be studied fresh at the Final level.
What are the passing marks for CA Final?
Minimum 40 marks in each individual paper and minimum 150 marks in aggregate for each group (50 percent of 300). Both conditions must be met simultaneously within the same group attempt.
What is the Distinction threshold for CA Final?
180 marks or above out of 300 in a group (60 percent or above) is Distinction.
Does the group exemption at CA Final work the same as at Intermediate?
Yes. If Group I is passed but Group II fails (or vice versa), the passed group is permanently retained. Only the failed group needs to be reattempted. The exemption remains valid throughout the five-year registration validity.
What is the typical pass percentage at CA Final?
Group-wise pass percentages typically range between 12 to 22 percent. The both-groups-simultaneously pass rate is lower, typically 8 to 14 percent. CA Final has the lowest pass rate across all three CA levels.
Is there any grace marking at CA Final level?
ICAI does not have a formal grace marking policy. Any discretionary condonation applied historically has been exceptional and cannot be relied upon in preparation strategy.
How is the IBS case study distributed?
At the beginning of the IBS examination, candidates receive a booklet containing the case study. All questions are based on this case study. The case study typically describes a complex business scenario involving a company or group facing multiple simultaneous financial, legal, tax, audit, and strategic challenges.
How should I read the IBS case study on exam day?
Spend 25 to 35 minutes reading the case study and annotating key facts: mark each paragraph with the subject area it implicates (Financial Reporting, Tax, Audit, etc.). After reading, spend five to eight minutes mapping each question to the relevant subject and relevant case fact before beginning to write answers.
Can I carry sticky tab markers in the permitted IBS study material?
Pre-placed tab markers (sticky tabs placed before the exam day) are generally permitted. Writing in the books during the exam is not permitted. Organising the permitted study material with subject-specific tabs before exam day is a productive preparation activity that also improves reference speed during the exam.
Is IBS attempted by all candidates in Group II?
Yes. Paper 6 (IBS) is a mandatory paper in Group II. All candidates who appear in Group II must attempt IBS.
When is the CA Final result declared?
Approximately 45 to 60 days after the last exam day. The January 2026 session result was declared in March 2026.
How do I check the CA Final result?
Visit icai.nic.in or icaiexam.icai.org, click on the result link for the session, enter Roll Number and Registration Number, and submit. Download the scorecard PDF.
What does passing both CA Final groups mean for my CA journey?
Passing both groups, combined with completing the two-year Articleship, Advanced ICITSS, and applicable SPOM sets, makes the candidate eligible to apply for ICAI membership. After membership is granted, the individual becomes an Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) and may use the designation "CA" before their name.
How long does the ICAI membership application process take?
Typically two to four weeks from the date of complete application submission. All required documents must be uploaded and verified before the membership number is issued.
Can I use my CA Final pass result to apply for jobs before membership is granted?
Yes. The CA Final scorecard and pass certificate serve as proof of clearing the examination. Most employers accept job applications from candidates who have cleared CA Final but are awaiting formal membership processing.
Is marks verification available for IBS (Paper 6)?
Yes. Marks verification (Rs. 100 per paper) and certified copy of answer script (Rs. 500 per paper) are available for all six papers including IBS. Apply within 30 days of the result declaration.
What are the career options after clearing CA Final and becoming a Chartered Accountant?
| Sector Typical Roles | |
| Public Accounting and Audit | Statutory audit, tax audit, internal audit in CA firms including Big Four |
| Corporate Finance | CFO, financial controller, FP&A, treasury, M&A |
| Banking and Financial Services | Credit analysis, risk management, investment banking |
| Taxation | Direct and indirect tax advisory, litigation support, compliance |
| Government and Regulatory | CAG, SEBI, RBI, Ministry of Finance |
| Consulting | Management consulting, ESG advisory, restructuring |
| Independent Practice | Own CA firm for audit, tax, and advisory services |
Does the CA qualification have international recognition?
ICAI has Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) with several international bodies including CPA Canada, CPA Australia, ICAEW (UK), ICAZ (Zimbabwe), and CPA Ireland. Through these MRAs, Indian Chartered Accountants can obtain recognition in partner countries through a simplified pathway without repeating the full qualification process.
How long does it take to complete the entire CA programme from Foundation to membership?
The theoretical minimum from CA Foundation clearance to ICAI membership is approximately four to five years: eight months to one year for CA Intermediate clearance, two years of Articleship, and the CA Final attempted during or after Articleship. In practice, most candidates take five to seven years due to multiple attempts at one or more levels.
Can a Chartered Accountant practise internationally?
Yes, through the applicable MRA pathway. In countries with MRAs, the CA can obtain membership in the local professional body (for example, CPA Canada, ICAEW UK) through a bridge examination or assessment process rather than starting the full local qualification from scratch.
