The NABARD Grade A examination is one of the most prestigious competitive examinations in the Indian banking and financial sector, conducted by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) to recruit Assistant Managers across multiple disciplines. Known for its unique blend of aptitude testing, deep subject knowledge in Economic and Social Issues (ESI) and Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD), and a descriptive component, the examination attracts candidates from diverse academic backgrounds including economics, agriculture, finance, law, and engineering.
NABARD, established under the NABARD Act of 1981, is the apex institution for agricultural and rural credit in India. It refinances banks, promotes rural infrastructure, supervises cooperative banks and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), and implements government schemes for rural development. A career as a NABARD Grade A officer places candidates at the heart of India's rural transformation and provides opportunities to work directly with policy, credit flow, and development banking at a national level.

Cutoffs for the NABARD Grade A exam vary by category, phase, and year. Phase 1 cutoffs are expressed as scores out of 100 merit marks (GA + ESI + ARD). Phase 2 cutoffs are expressed as scores out of 250 (Phase 2 Objective + Descriptive).
The final selection cutoff is expressed out of 300 (Phase 2: 250 + Interview: 50).
Historical Phase 1 cutoff ranges for the General category (RDBS stream) have typically been between 55 and 70 out of 100. Phase 2 cutoffs have typically been between 120 and 155 out of 250. Final selection cutoffs have ranged from 145 to 185 out of 300.
For session-wise cutoff data and category-wise breakdowns, visit the NABARD Grade A Cutoff page.
The NABARD Grade A exam is fundamentally different from generic banking examinations. While the Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, and English sections are similar to IBPS and RBI Grade B, the real differentiator is the ESI and ARD component, which together carry 80 out of 100 marks in the Phase 1 merit section and form the entire core of Phase 2.
Phase 1 shortlisting is based only on merit section marks (GA + ESI + ARD = 100 marks). The qualifying sections (Reasoning, English, Computer, Quantitative Aptitude, Decision Making) only need to be cleared; they do not add to the merit score. This means:
ESI Topics to Prioritise:
ARD Topics to Prioritise:
The syllabus for ESI and ARD is the same for both Phase 1 and Phase 2. This is a critical insight: every topic prepared for Phase 1 directly benefits Phase 2 preparation. However, the depth expected in Phase 2 is significantly greater, particularly in the descriptive section where candidates must write structured answers of 250 to 400 words on topics like agricultural credit, rural development programmes, and economic reforms.
Phase 2 Paper 1 (General English) requires essays, precis, and business letters. Paper 2 (ESI/ARD) requires long-form descriptive answers on development economics and agricultural topics. Descriptive writing practice must begin alongside content preparation, not after. Write at least one essay or descriptive answer on ESI/ARD topics every day for at least six weeks before the Phase 2 exam.
NABARD publishes annual reports and research publications that directly form the basis of many ARD and ESI questions. Reading the NABARD Annual Report, State of Indian Agriculture report, and key chapters of the Economic Survey of India provides authentic, NABARD-specific content that generic books cannot replicate.
Solving previous year question papers for Phase 1 and Phase 2 reveals question framing patterns for ESI and ARD, the level of technical detail expected in ARD topics, and the structure of descriptive answers that score well. Visit the NABARD Grade A PYQ page for session-wise papers.
After each session, understanding which topics were tested, their difficulty, and the good attempt benchmark helps in calibrating preparation. Visit the NABARD Grade A Exam Analysis page for session-wise insights.
Many candidates appear for both examinations, as the syllabus overlap is significant. Key differences:
| Parameter NABARD Grade A RBI Grade B | ||
| Conducting Body | NABARD | Reserve Bank of India |
| Vacancies | 80 to 100 per year | 200 to 300 per year |
| Phase 1 Merit Section | GA + ESI + ARD (100 marks) | GA + Economics + Finance (100 marks) |
| Phase 2 Specialised Paper | ESI and ARD with descriptive | Economics, Finance, Management (descriptive) |
| Agricultural Focus | High (ARD is a core paper) | Low (no dedicated agriculture paper) |
| Salary | Rs. 44,500 to Rs. 89,150 basic | Rs. 35,150 to Rs. 69,100 basic |
| Interview Marks | 50 out of 300 | 75 out of 375 |
Aspirants preparing for RBI Grade B and NABARD Grade A do not require separate ESI books since 90 percent of the syllabus is similar.
