The SSC MTS eligibility criteria define the minimum conditions every candidate must satisfy before applying for Multi-Tasking Staff and Havaldar posts under the 2026 notification scheduled for June 30, 2026. The Staff Selection Commission enforces these criteria throughout the selection process. Candidates who do not meet the criteria are disqualified during document verification, regardless of their examination performance.
The SSC MTS 2026 Eligibility Criteria is expected to remain the same as the previous year. The age limits for the posts as per the recruitment rules of various Departments are: 18-25 years for MTS and 18-27 years for Havaldar. The minimum educational qualification for SSC MTS is passing Matriculation examination or equivalent from a recognised Board.
This page covers every element of the eligibility framework: nationality conditions, educational qualification requirements, the two different age limits for MTS and Havaldar posts, the complete category-wise age relaxation table, Havaldar-specific Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST) standards, and a pre-application eligibility checklist.

The complete list of eligible nationalities:
Non-Indian nationals from eligible categories must produce a Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Government of India at Document Verification.
The minimum educational qualification requires candidates to have passed the Matriculation Exam (Class 10) or an equivalent qualification from a recognised board on or before the closing date of the SSC MTS Application Form.
Stream is irrelevant: The SSC MTS Eligibility 2026 is stream-neutral. Students from Science, Commerce, or Arts who have completed their 10th-grade course can apply.
No minimum percentage: To satisfy the SSC MTS Eligibility 2026, you only need a "Pass" certificate from a recognised board. No minimum percentage is required.
Result must be declared by the cutoff date: The 10th standard result must have been declared before the document verification stage. As per the 2025 notification pattern, candidates must have passed Class 10 by the application closing date (July 31, 2026 for the 2026 cycle).
Higher qualification candidates are eligible: Yes. Even though qualification for SSC MTS only requires you to pass 10th grade, students who are 12th pass or higher can definitely apply. You just need to be within the right age bracket.
Recognised boards: The 10th certificate must be from a Central or State Board recognised by the Government of India. Certificates from unrecognised private institutions are not valid.
Distance education: Class 10 certificates from distance learning programmes are valid if the board is recognised.
The age limits are: 18-25 years for Multitasking Staff (Non-Technical) and 18-27 years for Havaldar in CBIC and CBN.

| Scheduled Caste (SC) | 5 years | 30 years | 32 years |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 5 years | 30 years | 32 years |

The upper age limit for a person belonging to the SC category is 30 years (SSC MTS) and 32 years (Havaldar). The upper age limit to apply for the SSC MTS exam is 28 years (SSC MTS) and 30 years (Havaldar) for OBC.
OBC-NCL requirement: Age relaxation for OBC candidates is available only to those in the Non-Creamy Layer. The certificate must be in the Central Government prescribed format and must have been issued within one year of the application closing date.
ESM age calculation: The total military service rendered is subtracted from the actual age. An additional 3 years is then added as ESM relaxation. The resulting age must be within the permissible upper limit for the category.
PwBD candidates: Disability must be at least 40 percent and certified by a competent medical authority in the prescribed format. The nature of disability must be compatible with the duties of the post.
There are NO physical standards or physical tests required for the Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) non-technical posts. Physical standards (PST and PET) are applicable ONLY for Havaldar posts.
Candidates applying exclusively for MTS posts do not need to worry about any physical test. Physical requirements are exclusively for the Havaldar post in CBIC and CBN.
For the post of Havaldar in SSC MTS, the specific physical standards are: Male candidates: Height of 157.5 cm (relaxable by 5 cm for certain categories) and chest of 81 cm (fully expanded with a minimum expansion of 5 cm). Female candidates: Height of 152 cm (relaxable by 2.5 cm for certain categories) and weight of 48 kg (relaxable by 2 kg for certain categories).
| Measurement Male Standard Female Standard | ||
| Height | 157.5 cm minimum | 152 cm minimum |
| Height Relaxation (Hill regions, tribal areas) | Relaxable by 5 cm | Relaxable by 2.5 cm |
| Chest (Unexpanded) | 76 cm minimum | Not applicable |
| Chest (Expanded) | 81 cm minimum (5 cm minimum expansion) | Not applicable |
| Weight | Proportionate to height | 48 kg minimum (relaxable by 2 kg for certain categories) |
For the PET: Walking (Male): 1600 metres in 15 minutes. Walking (Female): 1 km in 20 minutes.
| Task Male Standard Female Standard | ||
| Walking | 1,600 metres in 15 minutes | 1,000 metres in 20 minutes |
| Nature | Qualifying (pass/fail) | Qualifying (pass/fail) |
| Chances | As per official notification | As per official notification |
Note: The SSC MTS Havaldar PET involves walking (not running like RRB Group D). This is an important distinction. The walking distance and time standards are more accessible than running standards, but must still be practised and prepared for.
Yes, you can give your preference for both during the application. However, you must meet the specific physical standards for the Havaldar post.
Candidates who meet both MTS and Havaldar eligibility (including physical standards) can apply for both within the same application, ranking their post preferences accordingly.
There is no limit on attempts. Candidates can attempt SSC MTS multiple times within age eligibility.
A General category MTS candidate who first applies at age 18 can theoretically appear in every annual CHSL cycle until they reach 25, giving approximately 7 attempts. Havaldar candidates can attempt until age 27, providing approximately 9 attempts.
Candidates with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) can avail age relaxation (10 to 15 years, depending on category) and reservation benefits if their disability is 40% or more and they possess a valid PwBD certificate issued by a competent authority.
PwBD candidates who apply for Havaldar posts must check the official notification for the specific types of disability that are compatible with Havaldar post duties. Some disability categories may not be compatible with the physical duties of Havaldar posts.
After clearing the CBE and PET/PST (for Havaldar), candidates must produce the following at Document Verification:
| Document Purpose | |
| Class 10 Certificate and Marksheet | Date of birth and qualification proof |
| SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwBD Certificate | Category claim verification (Central Government format) |
| OBC Non-Creamy Layer Certificate | Must be recent, in Central Government format |
| ESM Discharge Certificate | For Ex-Servicemen |
| Eligibility Certificate | For non-Indian nationals |
| Aadhaar Card | Identity verification |
| Valid Photo ID (PAN, Voter ID, Passport, Driving Licence) | Additional identity |
| Character Certificate | From Gazetted Officer or Institution Head |
| No Objection Certificate | If employed in government/PSU |
| Passport-size Photographs | As specified in the notification |
Incorrect age calculation date: Age is calculated as of the cutoff date (typically August 1, 2026), not the application date or the exam date. Candidates who are at the borderline of the age limit must calculate precisely.
Applying for Havaldar without meeting physical standards: For the Havaldar post in CBIC and CBN, physical standards and physical efficiency tests (PET) are also part of the eligibility criteria. Candidates who cannot meet the height, chest, or weight standards should not apply for Havaldar posts.
Using OBC certificate in State Government format: SSC requires the Central Government prescribed format for OBC-NCL certificates. State Government format certificates are not accepted.
Not reading age-group specific MTS posts: Some MTS posts within the same notification carry the 18-27 age range rather than 18-25. Check the specific post-wise table in the notification to confirm which age group applies to each post you are interested in.
| Step Condition | |
