SSC MTS generates a high volume of questions from candidates because it has several unique features not found in other SSC exams: the two-session structure with different negative marking rules in each session, merit based only on Session 2 (not the combined total), two different age groups for the same exam, a mandatory PET for Havaldar posts but not for MTS posts, and state-wise cutoffs rather than a single national cutoff. This page compiles the most frequently asked questions about SSC MTS 2026, covering every stage from eligibility and application to exam day, result, and career.

What is the SSC MTS 2026 exam pattern?
The CBE has two sessions held on the same day. Session 1: Numerical Ability (20 Q, 60 marks) + Reasoning (20 Q, 60 marks) = 40 questions, 120 marks, 45 minutes. Session 2: General Awareness (25 Q, 75 marks) + English (25 Q, 75 marks) = 50 questions, 150 marks, 45 minutes. Total: 90 questions, 270 marks, 90 minutes.
| Session Questions Marks Duration Negative Marking | ||||
| Session 1 | 40 | 120 | 45 minutes | None |
| Session 2 | 50 | 150 | 45 minutes | -1 mark per wrong answer |
| Total | 90 | 270 | 90 minutes | Session 2 only |
Is there negative marking in SSC MTS?
Session 1 has NO negative marking. Session 2 has a penalty of 1 mark for each wrong answer. Each question carries 3 marks, so a wrong answer in Session 2 costs 4 marks net (losing 3 from a correct answer plus a 1-mark deduction).
Should I attempt all Session 1 questions?
Yes. Since there is no negative marking in Session 1, every question should be attempted regardless of certainty level. Even a guess has a 33% positive expected value. Never leave a Session 1 question unattempted.
Can I switch between Session 1 and Session 2?
No. The system enforces strict session boundaries. Session 1 runs for 45 minutes; you cannot access Session 2 questions during Session 1 time. After Session 1 ends, there is a 15-minute mandatory break, then Session 2 begins.
Is there a 15-minute break between sessions?
Yes. There is a mandatory 15-minute break between Session 1 (45 minutes) and Session 2 (45 minutes). Candidates must remain inside the exam centre premises during this break. No study material or mobile phones can be accessed.
Is the exam available in regional languages?
Yes. The exam is available in English, Hindi, and 13 other regional languages (except the English Language section, which is in English only).
Is there normalisation in SSC MTS?
Yes. Since the exam is conducted in multiple shifts across many days, SSC applies normalisation to account for difficulty variation between shifts. All cutoffs are applied to normalised scores.
Is Session 1 score counted in the final merit?
No. The final merit list for MTS posts is prepared based on marks obtained by candidates in Session 2 only (out of 150). Session 1 is qualifying only. Candidates must clear the Session 1 qualifying threshold (30% for UR, 25% for OBC, 20% for others) but Session 1 marks are NOT added to the merit score.
What is the minimum qualifying mark in Session 1?
| Category Minimum in Session 1 (out of 120) | |
| UR / EWS | 30% = 36 marks |
| OBC (NCL) | 25% = 30 marks |
| SC / ST / PwBD / ESM | 20% = 24 marks |
If I score very high in Session 1 but low in Session 2, will I still qualify?
No. The merit list is entirely based on Session 2 (out of 150). A candidate who scored 115 in Session 1 but only 40 in Session 2 (below the 45-mark qualifying threshold for UR) would be eliminated. A candidate who scored 36 in Session 1 (just clearing the qualifying threshold) but 108 in Session 2 would qualify in most states.
What are the qualifying marks in Session 2?
| Category Minimum in Session 2 (out of 150) | |
| UR / EWS | 30% = 45 marks |
| OBC (NCL) | 25% = 37.5 marks |
| SC / ST / PwBD / ESM | 20% = 30 marks |
The minimum qualifying marks are different from the competitive cutoff. The competitive cutoff for UR candidates in high-demand states is typically 100-115 in Session 2.
How do I apply for SSC MTS 2026?
Applications are online only at ssc.gov.in through the One-Time Registration (OTR) system. Application opens June 30, 2026. Complete OTR if not done, fill the MTS form, select post preferences (MTS and/or Havaldar), upload photograph and signature, pay Rs 100 (if applicable), and submit.
What is the application fee?
Rs 100 for General and OBC male candidates. Women, SC, ST, PwBD, and ESM candidates are exempted.
Can I apply for both MTS and Havaldar posts?
Yes. You can apply for both MTS and Havaldar in the same application by selecting both as post preferences. However, you must meet the Havaldar physical standards (height, chest, weight) to be eligible for Havaldar shortlisting after the CBE.
What is OTR and is it mandatory?
OTR (One-Time Registration) is a permanent SSC account created once and used for all future SSC exam applications. It is mandatory for all SSC exams. Candidates who have previously registered for any SSC exam already have OTR credentials.
What is the self-slotting feature in SSC MTS?
SSC MTS uses a self-slotting system where candidates choose their specific exam city and date slot through the SSC portal. In the 2025-26 cycle, self-slotting was open from January 16 to 25, 2026. For the 2026-27 cycle, the self-slotting window will be announced before the September 2026 exam.
What is the SSC MTS cutoff?
The cutoff is the minimum Session 2 normalised score required to be shortlisted. It is released state/UT-wise, category-wise, and age-group-wise. High-competition states like Delhi have cutoffs 15-25 marks higher than lower-competition states in the same category.
Is the SSC MTS cutoff the same for all states?
No. SSC releases separate cutoffs for each state and union territory. The cutoff for General category (UR) in the 18-25 age group in a high-competition state may be 115 (Session 2), while the same category in a lower-competition state may be 88.
What is the expected SSC MTS 2026 cutoff?
Based on previous year trends, the expected cut off for General category in the 18-25 age group is approximately 168 to 182 out of 270 total. Since merit is Session 2 only, the competitive Session 2 threshold for UR is approximately 105-120 (out of 150) in competitive states. Safe target: Session 2 score of 122-130.
Is the cutoff different for MTS and Havaldar?
Yes. Havaldar typically has a higher CBE cutoff than MTS because the post includes physical requirements that further filter candidates after the CBE stage.
When will the SSC MTS 2025-26 result be declared?
The CBE (February 4-20, 2026) result is expected in April to June 2026, approximately 2 to 4 months after the last exam date.
How many months of preparation are needed for SSC MTS?
For a candidate starting from scratch, 2 to 3 months of structured daily preparation (3 to 4 hours) is typically sufficient to clear MTS. Since Session 2 (GA + English) determines merit, GA current affairs must be covered for 12 to 14 months before the exam. Begin current affairs coverage now.
Which session is more important for preparation?
Session 2 (GA + English, 150 marks) is far more important because it is the merit-determining component. Session 1 (Maths + Reasoning, 120 marks) is qualifying only. Invest proportionally more preparation time in GA and English.
What is the best strategy for Session 1?
Since Session 1 has no negative marking, attempt ALL 40 questions without exception. Use Reasoning (easiest section, 12-15 minutes) first, then Mathematics (20-25 minutes). Even uncertain Mathematics questions should be guessed rather than left blank.
What is the best strategy for Session 2?
Apply strict negative marking discipline. Attempt questions only when reasonably confident. Skip genuinely uncertain questions. For GA, attempt all current affairs questions you have studied; skip static GK you are unsure about. For English, attempt vocabulary, fill in the blanks, and grammar questions confidently; skip reading comprehension questions you cannot understand quickly.
How important are mock tests for SSC MTS?
Mock tests are essential because the two-session structure (different timing and different negative marking rules) must be practised under exact conditions. Attempting mocks with a 15-minute break between sessions builds the exam-day instincts needed. The SSC MTS Test Series provides 400 tests covering topic-wise, session-level, and full mock formats.
What documents must I carry to the SSC MTS exam?
A printed hard copy of the admit card, one original valid photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving Licence), one photocopy of the same ID, and two to three recent passport-size photographs.
Can I carry my mobile phone to the exam centre?
No. Mobile phones are strictly prohibited inside the examination hall. Carry a phone only if you plan to leave it outside with a companion or in your vehicle.
What happens during the break between Session 1 and Session 2?
There is a mandatory 15-minute break. Candidates must remain inside the exam centre premises. No exit is permitted. No study material, mobile phones, or notes can be accessed. The exam workstation may show a waiting screen. Use this time for mental preparation for Session 2.
Is Aadhaar biometric verification conducted at SSC MTS exam centres?
Based on recent SSC exam cycles, Aadhaar biometric verification is expected at SSC MTS 2026 exam centres. Ensure your Aadhaar biometric is unlocked at uidai.gov.in at least 3 days before your exam date.
