Understanding the UGC NET eligibility criteria is the first and most critical step before applying for the examination. Each session, a significant number of application forms are rejected because candidates overlook specific requirements related to marks, subject alignment, or age conditions. This detailed guide covers every eligibility parameter prescribed by the National Testing Agency and the University Grants Commission for the UGC NET examination.

The candidate must be a citizen of India. The UGC NET is designed to ensure that the positions of Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor are filled by individuals who intend to serve within Indian educational institutions.
The following categories may also apply:
Candidates holding foreign degrees must obtain an equivalence certificate from the University Grants Commission under the UGC (Recognition and Grant of Equivalence to Qualifications Obtained from Foreign Educational Institutions) Regulations before submitting an application.
Candidates must hold a Master's degree or an equivalent recognized postgraduate diploma or degree from a university or institution approved by the University Grants Commission.
The degree must be in the same or a related subject as the Paper 2 subject chosen by the candidate. The UGC NET Paper 2 subject should correspond to the discipline of the postgraduate degree.
| Category Minimum Percentage in Master's Degree | |
| General Category | 55% |
| EWS (Economically Weaker Section) | 55% |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 50% |
| Scheduled Caste (SC) | 50% |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 50% |
| Persons with Disabilities (PwD) | 50% |
| Third Gender | 50% |
PhD holders who completed their Master's degree on or before 19 September 1991 are eligible for a 5 percent relaxation in the minimum marks requirement, reducing the threshold from 55 percent to 50 percent for General category candidates.
Candidates who are appearing in the final semester or year of their Master's programme can apply provisionally. However, they must complete the degree with the required marks within the following timelines:
| Purpose of UGC NET Qualification Deadline to Complete Master's Degree | |
| JRF | Within 2 years from the date of NET result |
| PhD Admission | Within 1 year from the date of NET result |
If a provisional candidate fails to submit proof of completion with required marks within the stipulated period, the JRF award or PhD eligibility becomes void.
Candidates who have completed a four-year or eight-semester undergraduate degree programme are eligible for UGC NET under specific conditions:
| Parameter Requirement | |
| Minimum Marks (General / EWS) | 75% in the four-year Bachelor's degree |
| Minimum Marks (Reserved Categories) | 70% in the four-year Bachelor's degree |
| Eligible for | JRF and PhD Admission |
| Not eligible for | Assistant Professor appointment through this route |
Candidates qualifying through this route can appear for JRF and use the qualification for PhD admission. They cannot, however, use this route to claim Assistant Professor eligibility directly.
Final-year students of a four-year undergraduate programme may also apply provisionally, subject to the same completion deadlines as postgraduate final-year students.
Candidates must choose a Paper 2 subject that directly corresponds to their postgraduate degree subject. Mismatches between the degree subject and the Paper 2 choice are a common reason for disqualification.
The UGC NET is conducted for 87 subjects in 2026. If a candidate's postgraduate degree is in a subject not listed among the 87 NET subjects, they should check whether their subject falls under a broader category or combined subject listed in the official NTA notification.
When in doubt, candidates should verify subject eligibility from the official information bulletin published by NTA for each session before submitting an application. The application once submitted with a chosen subject cannot be changed later.
The maximum age limit for JRF is 30 years as of the first day of the month in which the UGC NET examination is conducted. For example, if the exam is scheduled in December, the age is calculated as of 1 December of that year.
There is no upper age limit for the post of Assistant Professor through UGC NET. Candidates of any age can appear and qualify for teaching eligibility.
There is no age restriction for candidates using UGC NET scores for PhD admission.
The following age relaxations apply to the JRF upper age limit of 30 years:
| Category Age Relaxation | |
| SC / ST / OBC-NCL (Non-Creamy Layer) | 5 years |
| Women candidates | 5 years |
| Transgender candidates | 5 years (same as SC/ST/PwD) |
| Persons with Disabilities (PwD) | 10 years |
| LLM degree holders | 3 years |
| Research experience candidates | Up to 5 years (certificate required from the appropriate authority) |
| Ex-servicemen | 5 years (calculated as per length of military service) |
Age relaxations are cumulative only in specific cases as per the official notification. Candidates claiming relaxation must upload relevant certificates at the time of application.
Research experience candidates must produce a certificate from an appropriate authority confirming the nature and duration of research. The relaxation applies only to the research experience directly relevant to the Master's degree subject.
Certain candidates holding specific qualifications are exempt from the requirement to clear UGC NET for the post of Assistant Professor:
| Qualification Exemption Status | |
| PhD degree awarded as per UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of MPhil/PhD Degree) Regulations 2009 | Exempt from NET/SET/SLET for Assistant Professor |
| PhD degree awarded before 18 September 2009 | Exempt from NET requirement (subject to other conditions) |
| MPhil degree (in certain pre-2009 cases) | Partially exempt under older UGC regulations |
NET / SET / SLET qualification remains the standard requirement for candidates who do not hold a qualifying PhD degree under the specified regulations.
SET (State Eligibility Test) conducted by authorized state agencies is valid for appointment as Assistant Professor only within the state that conducts the respective SET. It does not confer eligibility at the national level.
The Government of India's reservation policy applies to UGC NET. In central universities and institutions deemed to be universities, the seat reservations are as follows:
| Category Reservation | |
| Scheduled Castes (SC) | 15% |
| Scheduled Tribes (ST) | 7.5% |
| OBC Non-Creamy Layer | 27% |
| EWS (Economically Weaker Section) | 10% |
| PwD (horizontal reservation) | 5% |
These reservations apply to vacancies for JRF awardees and to teaching positions filled through the NET qualification route.
Candidates who have obtained their postgraduate degree from a foreign university must:
Without this certificate, applications with foreign qualifications are liable to be rejected.
Many candidates make avoidable errors that result in application rejection or disqualification at a later stage. The following list covers the most common mistakes:
Marks below the threshold: Candidates with 53 or 54 percent marks in a Master's degree from the General category apply without checking that 55 percent is mandatory. Even a fraction below the cutoff makes the candidate ineligible.
Subject mismatch: Choosing a Paper 2 subject that does not align with the postgraduate degree specialisation leads to disqualification even if the candidate scores well.
Age calculation error for JRF: Some candidates miscalculate age as of the date of the exam rather than the first of the month in which the exam is held. This difference can matter for borderline candidates.
Foreign degree without equivalence certificate: Candidates with degrees from foreign universities apply without first obtaining the mandatory UGC equivalence certificate.
Wrong category documents: Candidates claiming OBC-NCL or EWS relaxation must submit certificates that are current and issued by the appropriate authority. Expired or incorrect certificates are not accepted.
| Purpose Age Limit Minimum Qualification Marks Required (General) | |||
| JRF | 30 years (with relaxations) | Master's degree | 55% |
| Assistant Professor | No age limit | Master's degree | 55% |
| PhD Admission | No age limit | Master's degree / 4-year UG | 55% (Master's) or 75% (4-year UG) |
Once eligibility is confirmed, the next steps are understanding the exam pattern, downloading the syllabus, and building a preparation plan.
