Preparation leading up to the UGC NET exam deserves to be matched by an equally well-planned exam day. Even well-prepared candidates can lose marks or, in the worst case, be denied entry if they miss a document requirement, arrive late, or mismanage time within the three-hour session. This page provides a comprehensive guide to everything a candidate needs to know before, during, and after the exam on the day it is held.
For the complete exam overview, visit the UGC NET main page.

The admit card is the primary document required for entry to the exam centre. It is released on the official portal at ugcnet.nta.nic.in approximately 10 to 15 days before the exam date.
Steps to download the admit card:
Key information to verify on the admit card:
| Detail What to Check | |
| Name | Matches official documents exactly |
| Application Number and Roll Number | Legible and correctly printed |
| Exam Date and Shift | Correct date and shift (Morning or Afternoon) |
| Exam Centre | Note the full address and locate it in advance |
| Reporting Time | Note and set a reminder |
| Photograph | Should be the one uploaded during application |
| Subject and Subject Code | Correct Paper 2 subject |
If any detail on the admit card is incorrect, contact the NTA helpline at 011-40759000 immediately. Do not assume it will be corrected automatically.
Visit your exam centre at least one day before the exam. This is particularly important if the centre is in a new or unfamiliar area. Knowing the exact building, gate, and travel time eliminates uncertainty on the actual exam day.
Note:
Do not leave packing to the morning of the exam. Prepare everything the night before:
| Item Notes | |
| Printed Admit Card | Two copies recommended |
| Original Photo ID | Aadhaar card, PAN card, Passport, Voter ID, or Driving Licence |
| Passport-size Photographs | Carry two to three recent photographs matching the one on the admit card |
| Any other document mentioned on admit card | Check the admit card instructions specific to your session |
| Document Mandatory? Notes | ||
| Printed Admit Card | Yes | Digital / mobile copies are NOT accepted |
| Original Government-issued Photo ID | Yes | Must match the name on the admit card |
| Passport-size Photographs | Yes | Usually 2 photographs, same as uploaded |
| PwD Certificate | Yes (for PwD candidates) | For requesting scribe or extra time |
| Scribe Declaration Form | Yes (if using a scribe) | Obtained from NTA in advance |
Do not carry photocopies of identity documents in place of originals. If the photograph on the admit card is not clearly visible, carry the original application acknowledgement and contact the invigilator at the centre.
| Shift Reporting Time Gate Closing Time Exam Start Time | |||
| Morning Shift | 7:30 AM | 8:30 AM or as specified on admit card | 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM |
| Afternoon Shift | 1:00 PM | 2:00 PM or as specified on admit card | 3:00 PM |
Arrive at the centre at least 30 minutes before the gate closing time. Late arrivals are not permitted entry under any circumstances. NTA does not make exceptions for traffic, travel delays, or any other reason.
After the gate closes, candidates are not allowed inside, and no alternative exam date is provided for missed entries due to late arrival.
The following items are strictly prohibited inside the exam hall. Candidates found with any of these items are subject to disqualification.
| Category Prohibited Items | |
| Electronic Devices | Mobile phones, smartwatches, Bluetooth devices, earphones, cameras, calculators (personal) |
| Stationery | Personal pens, pencils, rulers, geometry sets, erasers |
| Study Material | Books, notes, printed sheets, cheat sheets, rough paper |
| Food and Drink | Outside food, water bottles (unless permitted by the centre for medical reasons) |
| Accessories | Caps, sunglasses, scarves, jewellery with metallic components |
| Bags | Handbags, backpacks, pouches |
What IS provided at the centre:
Leave all personal items including your mobile phone at your accommodation or in the vehicle. Lockers are available at some centres but not all. Do not assume storage will be available.
On arrival at the centre, the following steps occur:
Step 1: Document Verification at the Gate Security personnel check the admit card and photo ID at the main gate. Only candidates with valid documents are allowed inside.
Step 2: Biometric Registration / Photograph Capture Many UGC NET centres use biometric attendance or photograph capture for candidates. This is part of NTA's security protocol to prevent impersonation.
Step 3: Frisking All candidates are frisked before entering the exam hall. Electronic devices are confiscated if found.
Step 4: Seating Candidates are shown to their assigned seat, which is pre-allocated by the system. You cannot choose or change your seat.
Step 5: Login to CBT System Invigilators provide the login credentials for the CBT interface. Candidates log in using the provided details and wait for the exam to begin. Do not start attempting questions until the invigilator signals the start.
The UGC NET is conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. Understanding the interface before exam day prevents confusion during the live session.

The full session is 180 minutes with no fixed internal break between Paper 1 and Paper 2.
| Phase Time Activity | ||
| Opening (first 2 minutes) | 2 minutes | Read instructions, verify login details, check total questions |
| Paper 1 | 50 to 55 minutes | Attempt all 50 questions; mark uncertain ones for review |
| Paper 2 | 115 to 120 minutes | Attempt all 100 questions systematically unit by unit |
| Review Buffer | 5 to 10 minutes | Revisit marked questions, ensure all are attempted |
| Final Check | 2 to 3 minutes | Verify no question is left unanswered before submission |
Attempt every question. There is no negative marking, so every unattempted question is a guaranteed zero. Even for questions where you are unsure, attempt and mark for review rather than skipping.
Do not spend more than 90 seconds on any single question during the first pass. Flag it, move on, and return during the review phase.
Complete Paper 1 within 55 minutes. Overrunning on Paper 1 compresses the time available for the 100-question Paper 2, which carries twice the marks.
Manage Data Interpretation carefully. DI questions in Paper 1 can be time-consuming. If a DI set is taking more than three to four minutes, mark all questions in that set for review and return to them only if time permits.
Do not submit early. Use every available minute to review marked questions. In a no-negative-marking exam, there is no cost to revisiting and changing answers.
| Time Activity | |
| Wake up | At least 2.5 hours before reporting time |
| Light breakfast | Eat something familiar and easily digestible |
| Review admit card and ID | Last check before leaving |
| Depart | Allow 30 minutes extra travel time beyond your normal estimate |
| Arrive at centre | At or before the reporting time on your admit card |
| Problem Action | |
| Admit card forgotten | Contact the invigilator and NTA helpline. Some centres allow entry with alternative identification but this is at the centre's discretion. Do not assume this will be possible. |
| System malfunction during the exam | Alert the invigilator immediately. The time lost due to technical failure is typically compensated by NTA. Do not try to resolve it yourself. |
| Incorrect question display | Inform the invigilator. You can also switch to the Hindi or English version using the language toggle to check. |
| Feeling unwell during the exam | Alert the invigilator. Basic first aid is available at most centres. Leaving and re-entering the hall is not normally permitted. |
| Power outage | CBT centres have backup power; the system should resume. Alert the invigilator if the session does not resume within two minutes. |
Once the session is over, candidates should:
Do not discuss answers immediately. Comparing answers at the centre gate creates unnecessary anxiety based on unreliable recall.
Preserve the admit card. The admit card is required for downloading the result and scorecard. Keep it until the result is declared and the e-certificate is downloaded.
Check the official answer key. NTA releases the provisional answer key within two to four weeks of the exam on ugcnet.nta.nic.in. Use it to estimate your score.
Raise objections if needed. If you believe any answer in the provisional key is incorrect, submit a formal objection with supporting evidence within the objection window. The objection fee is Rs. 200 per question, refunded if accepted.
Continue preparation for the next session. If qualification is uncertain, begin preparation for the next session immediately. For resources, visit the UGC NET Test Series and UGC NET Syllabus Tracker.
Check the result. The result is typically declared six to eight weeks after the exam. Visit the UGC NET Result page for result download instructions and scorecard details.
Can the admit card be shown on a mobile screen? No. NTA requires a printed copy of the admit card at the exam centre. Digital versions on mobile phones are not accepted as valid entry passes.
What happens if there is a mismatch between the name on the admit card and the ID? Minor spelling differences are usually resolved by invigilators after document verification. Significant mismatches may cause complications. Contact the NTA helpline at 011-40759000 before exam day if you notice a name discrepancy on your admit card.
Can candidates use their own rough paper? No. Rough work scratch pads are provided at the centre. Candidates cannot bring their own stationery or paper.
Is there a lunch break between Paper 1 and Paper 2? No. Both papers are held in a single continuous three-hour session without any scheduled break. Candidates should plan accordingly.
Can candidates leave the exam hall early? In most sessions, candidates are not permitted to leave the hall before the session ends. Check the specific rules mentioned on your admit card for the current session.
Is there a dress code for the UGC NET exam? NTA does not prescribe a formal dress code, but candidates are advised to wear comfortable clothing without excessive jewellery or metallic accessories, which can trigger frisking equipment and slow down entry.
