The UGC NET notification is the most authoritative document in the examination cycle. Released by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission, it marks the formal beginning of the registration process for each session and contains every important detail a candidate needs to know before applying. This page covers what the notification contains, when it is typically released, the session-wise important dates, and how to read the official information bulletin.
For the complete exam overview, visit the UGC NET main page.

The UGC NET notification is an official public announcement issued by NTA that formally invites applications for the upcoming session of the examination. It is published simultaneously on the official website (ugcnet.nta.nic.in) and on the NTA main portal (nta.ac.in).
The notification serves as the starting point for the entire examination cycle. Along with the notification, NTA releases the Information Bulletin, which is a detailed PDF document containing the full rules, procedures, eligibility conditions, exam pattern, application instructions, and schedule.
Every candidate must read the Information Bulletin carefully before applying, since the bulletin is treated as the authoritative source. Any discrepancy between general guidance on third-party websites and the official bulletin is resolved in favour of the official document.
UGC NET is conducted twice a year:
| Session Typical Notification Month Typical Exam Month | ||
| June Session | April | June |
| December Session | October | December to January |
The exact notification date varies each year and is announced on the NTA website. Candidates who have registered on the NTA portal receive an email alert when the notification is released.
For June 2026, the notification was released on 29 April 2026, with the exam scheduled from 22 June to 30 June 2026.

Based on the last four to five years of NTA UGC NET scheduling, the following calendar represents the expected annual cycle:
| Month Activity | |
| April | June session notification released, application opens |
| May | Application window closes, correction window |
| June | Exam city intimation slip, admit card, exam held |
| July to August | Result for June session |

| November | Application window closes, correction window |
| December to January | December session exam held |
| February | Result and cutoff for December session |
| March to April | e-Certificate available for December session |
This calendar is approximate. NTA may revise dates depending on operational requirements. Candidates should check the official portal regularly rather than relying solely on expected dates.
Alternatively, register on the NTA portal with a valid email address. NTA sends email alerts to registered candidates when new notifications are published.
Candidates can also follow NTA's official social media handles and the Aspirant Mitraa notification page for real-time updates.
The admit card is a separate document released after the application process closes. It is not the same as the Confirmation Page generated after submitting the application.
| Detail Information Included | |
| Candidate Name | As registered in the application |
| Application Number | Unique ID |
| Roll Number | Assigned by NTA |
| Paper 2 Subject and Code | As selected in application |
| Exam Date | Specific to the candidate's subject |
| Shift | Morning or Afternoon |
| Reporting Time | Typically 90 minutes before exam start |
| Exam Centre | Name and full address |
| Important Instructions | Rules to follow on exam day |
Admit cards are released date-wise in the December session when the exam spans multiple days. Candidates should check the portal on the release date for their specific exam date rather than waiting for a single universal release.
Many candidates confuse these two documents:
| Document Purpose Released | ||
| City Intimation Slip | Informs the candidate about the allotted exam city | Approximately 10 days before exam |
| Admit Card (Hall Ticket) | Actual entry pass to the exam centre | Approximately 7 to 10 days before exam |
Both are downloaded from the official portal. The City Intimation Slip is released first so that candidates can arrange travel and accommodation. The Admit Card contains additional details including the specific centre address and shift timing.
After each exam session, NTA releases a provisional answer key on the official portal. Candidates have the opportunity to raise objections to specific answer key entries within a defined period.
| Step Details | |
| Provisional Answer Key Released | 2 to 4 weeks after the last exam date |
| Objection Window | 3 to 5 days after provisional key release |
| Objection Fee | Rs. 200 per question challenged |
| Objection Fee Refund | Refunded if the objection is accepted |
| Final Answer Key | Released after review of all objections |
| Result | Based on the final answer key |
Candidates who believe a question has an incorrect answer or an ambiguous option should raise a formal objection with supporting evidence from standard reference books or the official syllabus. Objections without supporting evidence are typically dismissed.
The UGC prescribes the Paper 1 syllabus and the individual Paper 2 syllabi for all 87 subjects. The syllabus is generally stable across sessions, but the notification for each session confirms whether any changes have been made.
For the June 2026 session, two new subjects, Forestry and Statistics, were added, bringing the total to 87 subjects. Candidates appearing in newly added subjects should particularly confirm the syllabus through the official information bulletin for that session.
For the complete topic-by-topic syllabus breakdown, visit the UGC NET Syllabus page. To track your syllabus coverage systematically, use the UGC NET Syllabus Tracker.
Qualified candidates receive an electronic certificate from NTA, which is available for download from the official portal. The e-Certificate serves as proof of qualification for both JRF and Assistant Professor eligibility.
| Detail Information | |
| Availability | Typically 3 to 4 months after the result |
| Download Portal | ugcnet.nta.nic.in |
| JRF Certificate Validity | 3 years from issue date |
| AP Eligibility | Permanent (no expiry) |
The NTA announced that all qualified candidates' data is also shared with Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) for admission to PhD programmes and with public sector undertakings and other organizations for relevant purposes.
When a new UGC NET notification is released, the first week is critical for completing the application without errors. The following checklist helps candidates stay on track:
Day 1 to 2:
Day 3 to 5:
Day 6 to 7:
After Application:
Delaying the application to the last few days increases the risk of portal congestion, payment failures, and missed deadlines. Early application is always advisable.

How many times is UGC NET held in a year? UGC NET is held twice a year, in June and December. Candidates can appear in both sessions in a year without any restriction.
Is there a separate registration for JRF and Assistant Professor? No. The application form has a single field where candidates select their purpose (JRF only, AP only, or both). There is no separate application for JRF.
Can candidates who have already qualified for AP in a previous session reappear to improve their score for JRF? Yes. There is no restriction on reappearing. Candidates can appear in any subsequent session to attempt to achieve a higher score and qualify for JRF.
Is the Information Bulletin released in Hindi as well? The official Information Bulletin is primarily in English. NTA provides a bilingual exam interface (Hindi and English), but the complete detailed bulletin is most reliably available in English.
What should a candidate do if they do not receive the Confirmation Page email after submitting the application? Check the NTA portal directly by logging in with the Application Number and Password. The Confirmation Page can be downloaded from the portal even if the email is not received. Candidates facing issues should contact the NTA helpline immediately.
