Previous year question papers are the most authentic preparation resource available for any competitive examination. For UGC NET, the PYQs serve a specific and irreplaceable purpose: they show exactly how NTA frames questions from the prescribed syllabus, which topics recur across sessions, and what level of conceptual depth Paper 2 demands. No study material or mock test fully replicates this because the actual papers are the benchmark itself.
This page explains how to access UGC NET PYQs, which sessions to prioritise, how to use them at each stage of preparation, and what patterns emerge from a systematic analysis of papers across multiple years.

Many candidates underestimate the value of previous year papers, treating them as a finishing-stage resource. In practice, PYQs are effective at every stage of preparation and serve distinct purposes depending on when they are used.
| Stage of Preparation How PYQs Help | |
| Early stage (first month) | Understand the difficulty level and question style before deep study begins |
| Mid-stage (after unit completion) | Verify whether the level of study is sufficient for the actual exam |
| Late stage (final weeks) | Simulate real exam conditions and sharpen time management |
| Post-exam (analysis stage) | Cross-check responses against the official answer key |
Papers from 2021 onwards show a clear shift in Paper 1 toward comprehension, reasoning, ICT, research aptitude, and data interpretation, while Paper 2 has moved toward unit-wise conceptual understanding and application-based questions rather than direct recall. Candidates who ignore this trend and prepare only for factual recall questions are consistently at a disadvantage.
NTA releases official question papers and answer keys for all UGC NET sessions on the official portal at ugcnet.nta.nic.in. Papers are available for download through candidate login credentials for recent sessions. Older papers from pre-2018 sessions (when the exam had three papers including Paper 3) are also available on education portals and the NTA archive.

For each available session, the following documents can be downloaded:
For sessions in which the candidate appeared:
For sessions in which the candidate did not appear, official question papers are typically published as part of the answer key challenge window. These papers are also available on NTA's archive section and on major education portals.
Not all sessions carry equal preparation value. The following prioritisation guide helps candidates focus their PYQ practice effectively.
Papers from the most recent three to four sessions are the most directly relevant because:
These papers are useful for understanding how the current format stabilised after the transition from three-paper to two-paper format and from OMR to CBT mode. They are good for building breadth of topic coverage without the risk of practising with outdated question types.
Papers from before 2018 used a three-paper format and contained descriptive Paper 3 questions. These are relevant only as historical reference and should not be used for timed practice.
Analysing Paper 1 across multiple sessions reveals strong patterns in which topics and subtopics are repeatedly tested. Accessing the last five years of UGC NET PYQs PDF is particularly beneficial for identifying recent changes in difficulty level and improving accuracy and time management.
| Unit Recurring Topics Across Sessions | |
| Research Aptitude | Types of research, sampling methods, hypothesis testing, research ethics, citation formats |
| Logical Reasoning | Syllogisms, Venn diagrams, statement and assumption questions, blood relations |
| Higher Education | UGC Act, NAAC accreditation, NEP 2020, Kothari Commission, Radhakrishnan Commission |
| Data Interpretation | Bar charts, pie charts, tables with percentage-based calculations |
| ICT | SWAYAM, NPTEL, e-Pathshala, MOOCs, LAN/WAN, types of software |
| Teaching Aptitude | Levels of teaching, methods of teaching, characteristics of effective teaching |
| Mathematical Reasoning | Number series, direction sense, coding-decoding |
| People and Environment | SDGs, Paris Agreement, environmental acts, pollution types |
| Communication | Barriers to communication, types of communication, mass media |
| Reading Comprehension | Inference, main idea identification, tone and purpose |
Questions increasingly require candidates to apply concepts to scenarios rather than simply recall definitions. For example, a Research Aptitude question may present a research scenario and ask the candidate to identify the type of research or the appropriate sampling technique, rather than asking "define stratified sampling."
Paper 2 PYQ analysis is subject-specific. However, certain structural patterns appear across most subjects.
| Question Format Frequency Trend | |
| Direct concept-based MCQs | Still common but declining as sole format |
| Statement 1 and Statement 2 evaluation | Increasing across most subjects |
| Match the following (concept to author/year/theory) | Consistently present |
| Arrange in chronological order | Common in History, Political Science, Education |
| Identify the correct / incorrect statement | High frequency across social sciences |
| Case-based / application questions | Growing in Psychology, Management, Computer Science |
For most subjects, certain units of the UGC-prescribed syllabus carry disproportionately higher question weight. PYQ analysis is the most reliable way to identify these units.
For example, in Economics:
Candidates should conduct similar analyses for their own subjects using at least five years of PYQs.
Attempt one full Paper 1 from a recent session without any prior preparation. This diagnostic attempt reveals:
Do not be discouraged by a low score at this stage. The purpose is diagnostic, not evaluative. Use the result to inform your study plan.
After finishing each unit of Paper 1 or each chapter of Paper 2, solve all the PYQs available for that unit across sessions. This reinforces what was just studied and shows whether the level of study is sufficient for the exam.
Track which units are covered using the UGC NET Syllabus Tracker. Mark units as complete only after solving PYQs for that unit with a satisfactory accuracy rate.
In the final four to six weeks before the exam, use complete PYQ papers as full timed tests. Attempt 150 questions continuously within three hours.
After each timed PYQ practice session:
Both PYQs and mock tests from the UGC NET Test Series are essential, but they serve different functions.
| Parameter PYQ Practice Mock Test Practice | ||
| Question Source | Actual NTA exam papers | Freshly designed questions based on syllabus |
| Authenticity | Highest (real exam questions) | High (syllabus-aligned but not actual exam) |
| Question Variety | Limited to what has already appeared | 400 tests provide fresh questions each time |
| Purpose | Understand actual exam standard and recurring topics | Build exam stamina, speed, and identify gaps |
| Best Used For | Benchmarking and topic identification | Regular timed practice and performance tracking |
The most effective preparation strategy combines both. Solve PYQs to set the standard and identify priorities; use the test series to build the practice volume needed to consistently hit that standard.
After each UGC NET session, NTA releases a provisional answer key on the official portal. Candidates who believe a question has been answered incorrectly in the key can submit a formal objection.
| Step Details | |
| Provisional Answer Key Release | 2 to 4 weeks after the last exam date |
| Objection Window | 3 to 5 days |
| Fee per Objection | Rs. 200 |
| Refund if Objection Accepted | Yes, Rs. 200 refunded per accepted challenge |
| Final Answer Key | Released after all objections are reviewed |
When practicing with PYQs and you encounter a question where the answer seems incorrect or the question is poorly framed, cross-check with the final answer key rather than the provisional one. The final answer key is the one used for calculating official scores.
Paper 1 is common for all candidates. PYQs for Paper 1 are available for every session from 2019 onwards in bilingual format. Candidates should solve at least six to eight sessions of Paper 1 PYQs.
| Subject Sessions Available (Approx.) Notes | ||
| Political Science | 2019 to 2025 | High question volume, multiple shifts |
| Sociology | 2019 to 2025 | Good unit coverage across sessions |
| Economics | 2019 to 2025 | Mix of theory and quantitative questions |
| History | 2019 to 2025 | Chronology-heavy in recent sessions |
| Hindi | 2019 to 2025 | Language and literature balance |
| English | 2019 to 2025 | Literature, linguistics, and criticism |
| Education | 2019 to 2025 | Policy and pedagogy heavy |
| Commerce | 2019 to 2025 | Accounting, finance, and management mix |
| Computer Science | 2019 to 2025 | Increasing application and coding-logic questions |
| Management | 2019 to 2025 | Case-based questions increasing |
| Psychology | 2019 to 2025 | Strong bias toward applied and research psychology |
| Geography | 2019 to 2025 | Maps and data interpretation questions present |
| Law | 2019 to 2025 | Constitutional and procedural law focus |
Practising without a timer: Solving PYQs without a time constraint does not build exam stamina or accurate speed awareness. Always use a timer, especially in the final preparation phase.
Checking the answer key mid-paper: Stopping to check answers during the practice session defeats the purpose of simulating exam conditions. Complete the full paper before reviewing.
Not analysing wrong answers: Marking questions as wrong and moving on without understanding why they were wrong is the single biggest missed opportunity in PYQ practice. Every wrong answer is a learning signal.
Using only Paper 1 PYQs: Many candidates focus exclusively on Paper 1 PYQs because the syllabus is universal. Paper 2 PYQs are equally important, especially for understanding the question framing style and conceptual depth expected.
Relying on PYQs alone: PYQs are finite. After solving all available sessions, use the UGC NET Test Series for continued fresh practice. The test series includes 400 tests covering topic-wise, subject-wise, and full mock formats.
Are UGC NET PYQs available for free? Yes. Official NTA question papers and answer keys are available for download from the official portal for candidates who appeared in those sessions. For candidates seeking papers from sessions they did not appear in, most major education portals provide these as free downloads.
How many years of PYQs should I solve? Solving at least five to seven years of previous papers is recommended. This provides sufficient exposure to question variety, topic distribution, and difficulty evolution. For Paper 2, prioritise the most recent four sessions.
Does the UGC NET syllabus change affect older PYQs? The core Paper 1 syllabus has been stable since the two-paper format was introduced in 2018. Paper 2 syllabi are also broadly stable, though some subjects see periodic additions. Questions from older papers on topics that remain in the current syllabus are fully valid for practice.
Can I use PYQs to predict specific questions for the next session? No. NTA does not repeat exact questions across sessions. PYQs reveal topic weightage and question formats, not specific questions.
Where can I access the official final answer keys? Final answer keys are available on ugcnet.nta.nic.in under the Answer Key section. They are released after the provisional key objection window closes and before the result is declared.
