The CA Foundation examination is the entry point to one of India's most respected and demanding professional qualifications: Chartered Accountancy. Conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), the CA Foundation serves as the first level of the three-tier CA programme, which progresses through CA Intermediate and CA Final before culminating in the award of the Chartered Accountant designation.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of students, predominantly from commerce backgrounds, register for the CA Foundation with the ambition of building a career in accounting, audit, taxation, finance, and related fields. The examination tests foundational knowledge across four papers covering accounting principles, business laws, quantitative aptitude, and business economics.
This guide covers every dimension of the CA Foundation examination: who can appear, how to register, what the syllabus covers, how the papers are structured, what the passing criteria are, and how to prepare effectively.

The CA Foundation is the first stage of the Chartered Accountancy programme in India. It replaced the earlier Common Proficiency Test (CPT) in 2019 under the New Scheme of Education and Training introduced by the ICAI. The Foundation course is designed to build conceptual clarity in core commerce subjects that are essential for the more advanced stages of the CA programme.
Unlike the CPT, which was entirely objective in nature, the CA Foundation under the new scheme has a more balanced structure, with two descriptive (subjective) papers and two objective papers, assessing both conceptual understanding and analytical ability.
Passing the CA Foundation is the gateway to registering for CA Intermediate. Alternatively, candidates who have completed their graduation or postgraduation with prescribed minimum marks can directly register for CA Intermediate without appearing for the Foundation (known as the Direct Entry route), but for most students joining after Class 12, the Foundation is the starting point.

From June 2024 onwards, ICAI moved to a three-sessions-per-year schedule for the CA Foundation. This change gives students more opportunities to appear within a year and reduces the long wait between attempts.
| Session Exam Dates Result Expected | ||
| May 2026 | 14, 16, 18, 20 May 2026 | First week of July 2026 |
| September 2026 | 2 to 9 September 2026 | October to November 2026 |
| January 2027 | Dates to be announced | March 2027 |
Each session is spaced approximately four months apart, aligning with the mandatory four-month study period required after registration.
The CA Foundation eligibility conditions are set by the ICAI and have been updated under the new scheme.
Candidates must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination from a recognized board in India or abroad. There is no minimum marks requirement for Class 12. Any stream (Commerce, Science, Arts) is eligible.
Provisional registration is allowed for students who have appeared in their Class 12 board examination but whose results are not yet declared, provided they submit a valid Class 12 admit card as proof.
Students can register for the CA Foundation with the Board of Studies (BoS) of the ICAI after passing Class 10. However, they can appear in the examination only after passing Class 12.
A mandatory study period of four months from the date of registration is required before the examination. This means students must register at least four months before the exam month they intend to attempt.
| For the Attempt Last Date to Register | |
| May 2026 | 1 January 2026 |
| September 2026 | 1 May 2026 |

Under the ICAI New Scheme of Education and Training, the CA Foundation syllabus consists of four papers, each covering a distinct area of commerce and analytical knowledge.
Paper 1 is a 100-mark subjective paper covering the fundamentals of financial accounting. Topics include:
Paper 2 is a 100-mark subjective paper divided into two sections:
Section A: Business Laws (60 marks)
Section B: Business Correspondence and Reporting (40 marks)
Section B of Paper 2 is examined only in English regardless of the candidate's medium choice.
Paper 3 is a 100-mark objective paper with two hours duration. It is divided into three sections:
Section A: Business Mathematics (40 marks)
Section B: Logical Reasoning (20 marks)
Section C: Statistics (40 marks)
Paper 4 is a 100-mark objective paper with two hours duration:
For the complete chapter-wise and topic-level breakdown of all four papers, visit the CA Foundation Syllabus page. Use the CA Foundation Syllabus Tracker to track progress across all four papers.
The CA Foundation follows a dual-format exam structure. Papers 1 and 2 are subjective and require written descriptive answers. Papers 3 and 4 are objective and consist entirely of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).
| Paper Name Type Duration Marks Negative Marking | |||||
| Paper 1 | Principles and Practice of Accounting | Subjective | 3 hours | 100 | No |
| Paper 2 | Business Laws | Subjective | 3 hours | 100 | No |
| Paper 3 | Quantitative Aptitude | Objective (MCQ) | 2 hours | 100 | Yes (0.25 per wrong answer) |
| Paper 4 | Business Economics | Objective (MCQ) | 2 hours | 100 | Yes (0.25 per wrong answer) |
The exam is conducted offline in pen-and-paper mode. Separate OMR answer sheets are provided for the objective papers. The exam is held across designated ICAI examination centres nationwide.
For the full paper-wise pattern including question distribution and marking scheme, visit the CA Foundation Exam Info page.
The ICAI prescribes a dual-condition passing criteria for the CA Foundation:
| Condition Requirement | |
| Minimum marks in each paper | 40 out of 100 (40%) |
| Minimum aggregate marks | 200 out of 400 (50%) |
Both conditions must be satisfied simultaneously. A candidate who scores above 50 percent aggregate but falls below 40 marks in any individual paper is not considered to have passed.
Candidates who score 70 percent or above in aggregate (280 out of 400 or more) are awarded the designation "Passed with Distinction."
ICAI does not follow a standard grace mark policy. However, candidates who are within a small margin of passing in individual papers may receive conditional exemptions in some sessions, subject to ICAI discretion. This should not be relied upon in preparation.
If a candidate passes the aggregate but fails in one or two individual papers in certain exceptional circumstances, ICAI may grant exemptions in the passed papers for future attempts. Check the specific exemption rules in the official notification for each session.
The CA Foundation registration is done entirely online through the ICAI Self Service Portal (SSP) at eservices.icai.org. Registration is a one-time process for the course, separate from the examination form submission which happens for each attempt.
| Category Fee | |
| Indian Students (Standard) | Rs. 9,000 (registration fee) + Rs. 200 (prospectus) + Rs. 200 (student journal) = Rs. 9,400 |
| J&K and 8 North-Eastern States | 75% concession: approximately Rs. 2,250 |
| Foreign Students | USD 700 |
| Exam Form Fee (per attempt) | Rs. 1,500 additional |
Total first-time cost for Indian students is approximately Rs. 10,900 to Rs. 11,300 including exam form fees for the first attempt.
The CA Foundation registration is valid for three years from the date of registration, covering up to nine attempts across three sessions per year. After three years, registration can be revalidated by paying a revalidation fee.
For step-by-step registration instructions, required documents, and exam form submission process, visit the CA Foundation Application Process page.
ICAI releases notifications for each session through the official website at icai.org. The notification announces exam dates, registration deadlines, exam form submission windows, admit card release dates, and result timelines.
For the latest session-wise dates and links to official ICAI notifications, visit the CA Foundation Notification page.
The CA Foundation pass percentage has historically ranged between 15 percent and 35 percent depending on the session. This low pass rate reflects the rigour of the examination and underscores the importance of structured, thorough preparation.
| Session Approximate Pass Percentage | |
| May 2025 | 21.52% |
| January 2025 | Approximately 22 to 25% |
| September 2024 | Approximately 18 to 23% |
| June 2024 | Approximately 14 to 20% |
| December 2023 | Approximately 29 to 30% |
| June 2023 | 24.98% |
| December 2022 | 29.25% |
The pass percentage in the January and September sessions has generally been slightly higher than May/June sessions, which tend to attract the highest volume of first-time candidates.
For session-wise pass percentage analysis and what it means for preparation benchmarks, visit the CA Foundation Cutoff page.
A well-structured preparation plan makes the difference between clearing the CA Foundation in the first attempt and going through multiple cycles. The examination tests both theoretical knowledge and analytical ability, demanding different preparation approaches for subjective and objective papers.
A common mistake among CA Foundation candidates is focusing exclusively on Paper 1 (Accounting) while neglecting Papers 3 and 4 in the early stages. All four papers require consistent attention throughout the preparation period.
A recommended weekly allocation:
| Paper Weekly Study Time (Indicative) | |
| Paper 1: Accounting | 8 to 10 hours |
| Paper 2: Business Laws | 6 to 8 hours |
| Paper 3: Quantitative Aptitude | 8 to 10 hours |
| Paper 4: Business Economics | 5 to 7 hours |
| Revision and Practice | 4 to 6 hours |
ICAI provides comprehensive study material for all four papers as part of the registration package. This material is the definitive source for CA Foundation preparation because:
Supplementary books by established authors can be used for additional practice, particularly for Paper 1 and Paper 3.
The CA Foundation Syllabus Tracker on Aspirant Mitraa is designed to help candidates monitor their preparation coverage across all four papers. Mark topics as complete, in progress, or pending to ensure no chapter is left uncovered before the exam.
Paper 1 (Accounting): This paper demands accuracy in numericals and clarity in theory. Practice journal entries, ledger accounts, and final accounts daily. Even a conceptual understanding of accounting is not sufficient without regular problem-solving practice.
Paper 2 (Business Laws): This paper has two distinct sections. Section A (Business Laws) requires thorough reading of the bare act provisions for the Indian Contract Act, Sale of Goods Act, Partnership Act, and LLP Act. Section B (Business Correspondence) requires practice in formal writing formats including letters, emails, and reports.
Paper 3 (Quantitative Aptitude): This is an objective paper with negative marking. Speed and accuracy are equally important. Build formulae familiarity for the mathematics and statistics sections, and practice logical reasoning questions daily. Attempt only those questions you are confident about to avoid negative marking losses.
Paper 4 (Business Economics): This is also an objective paper with negative marking. Focus on understanding economic concepts rather than memorizing definitions. Graphs and diagrams for demand and supply, production theory, and market structures form the conceptual backbone of this paper.
ICAI publishes previous year question papers and mock test papers on its official website. Solving these is one of the most effective ways to understand the question style, difficulty level, and topic emphasis. For subject-wise and year-wise previous papers, visit the CA Foundation PYQ page.
Understanding how the exam has been structured across recent sessions informs which topics deserve deeper preparation. Visit the CA Foundation Exam Analysis page for session-wise difficulty levels and topic weightage trends.
Clearing the CA Foundation is the first milestone in the CA journey. After passing, candidates register for CA Intermediate, which has two groups of three papers each. Upon clearing CA Intermediate, candidates begin their Articleship (three years of practical training) and eventually attempt CA Final.
The total minimum time to complete the entire CA programme after Class 12 is approximately four and a half to five years if every exam is cleared in the first attempt. In practice, most candidates take five to seven years.
| Stage Duration After Clearing Purpose | ||
| CA Foundation | Entry point | Gateway to CA Intermediate |
| CA Intermediate | 8 months study + 3-year Articleship | Gateway to CA Final |
| CA Final | During or after Articleship | Final qualification exam |
| Membership | After clearing CA Final and Articleship | Chartered Accountant designation |
Chartered Accountants work across audit firms, corporate finance, banking, taxation, government advisory roles, and in independent practice. The qualification is recognized internationally and opens doors to roles in Big Four accounting firms, multinational corporations, and regulatory bodies.
Graduates and postgraduates with the required marks can bypass the CA Foundation entirely through the Direct Entry route and register directly for CA Intermediate. This route is available to:
For students joining after Class 12, the Foundation route is the standard and only available path. The Foundation route is also beneficial because it builds the conceptual foundation required for the significantly more demanding CA Intermediate syllabus.
