What is the CA Foundation exam?
The CA Foundation is the first level of the Chartered Accountancy (CA) programme conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). It replaced the Common Proficiency Test (CPT) in 2019 under the New Scheme of Education and Training. Passing the CA Foundation is required for students who wish to progress to CA Intermediate, the second level of the CA programme.
Who conducts the CA Foundation exam?
The CA Foundation is conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), a statutory body established under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949. ICAI is the sole body authorized to regulate the Chartered Accountancy profession in India.
How many sessions of CA Foundation are held in a year?
Starting from June 2024, ICAI conducts the CA Foundation three times a year: in May or June, in September, and in January. Before this change, the exam was held twice a year (in June and December). The three-session calendar gives candidates more opportunities to appear and reduces the waiting time between attempts.
How is CA Foundation different from the old CPT?
The Common Proficiency Test (CPT) was an entirely objective examination with 200 MCQs across four subjects. The CA Foundation under the new scheme has two subjective papers (Papers 1 and 2) and two objective papers (Papers 3 and 4). The Foundation also has a changed syllabus including Business Correspondence and Reporting in Paper 2, which was not part of the CPT.
Is the CA Foundation compulsory for all CA aspirants?
No. Graduates and postgraduates who meet the required marks threshold (55 percent for Commerce graduates, 60 percent for non-Commerce graduates) can register directly for CA Intermediate under the Direct Entry Scheme without clearing the Foundation. For students joining after Class 12, the Foundation is compulsory.
What is the minimum qualification to appear for CA Foundation?
Candidates must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination from any recognized board. There is no minimum percentage required in Class 12. Students from any stream (Commerce, Science, Arts) are eligible.
Is there any age limit for CA Foundation?
No. ICAI does not prescribe any minimum or maximum age limit for the CA Foundation. Students, working professionals, and individuals of any age who have passed Class 12 from a recognized board are eligible.
Can I register for CA Foundation before passing Class 12?
Yes. ICAI allows provisional registration after passing Class 10. Students can register with their Class 10 mark sheet and begin the four-month study period while completing Class 11 or 12. However, they can appear in the examination only after they have sat for the Class 12 board examination.
Can I appear for CA Foundation without a commerce background?
Yes. The CA Foundation is open to students from all streams. Science and Arts students are equally eligible. The ICAI study material for all four papers is self-contained and does not require prior subject knowledge from Class 11 or 12.
Is there a restriction on the number of attempts for CA Foundation?
No. There is no restriction on the number of attempts within the registration validity period of three years. With three sessions per year, candidates have up to nine attempts within the three-year window. Registration can be revalidated after expiry.
Can a working professional register and appear for CA Foundation?
Yes. There are no restrictions based on employment status. Any individual who has passed Class 12 can register and appear for the CA Foundation.
What is the study period requirement for CA Foundation?
A mandatory four-month study period from the date of registration must be completed before appearing in the examination. Candidates must register at least four months before the session they intend to appear in. For May 2026, the cut-off date was 1 January 2026. For September 2026, it is 1 May 2026.
How do I register for CA Foundation?
Registration is done online through the ICAI Self Service Portal (SSP) at eservices.icai.org. The process involves creating an account, filling in personal and academic details, uploading documents (photograph, signature, Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets), and paying the registration fee. For the complete step-by-step process, visit the CA Foundation Application Process page.
What is the CA Foundation registration fee?
The registration fee is Rs. 9,000 for Indian students, plus Rs. 200 for prospectus and Rs. 200 for the student journal, totalling approximately Rs. 9,400. Students from Jammu and Kashmir and the eight North-Eastern states receive a 75 percent concession, reducing the fee to approximately Rs. 2,250.
What is the exam form fee?
The exam form fee is Rs. 1,500 per attempt for Indian students. It is paid separately from the registration fee for every session in which the candidate wants to appear.
Is the registration fee refundable?
No. The ICAI registration fee is non-refundable under any circumstances once paid.
Can I change the name or date of birth in my ICAI registration after submitting the form?
No. ICAI does not allow changes to the name, date of birth, or gender after the registration form is submitted. These fields must match the Class 10 certificate exactly. Enter them with great care before submitting.
How long is the CA Foundation registration valid?
The registration is valid for three years from the date of registration. After three years, candidates can revalidate the registration by paying a revalidation fee. If revalidation is not done within the prescribed time, the candidate must re-register and pay the full fee again.
Can I change my exam centre city after submitting the exam form?
ICAI allows city change requests during a limited correction window after the exam form submission period closes. This is not always guaranteed and depends on centre availability at the requested city.
How many papers are there in the CA Foundation exam?
There are four papers in the CA Foundation examination:
Are all papers held on the same day?
No. Each paper is held on a separate day. The four papers are typically spread over four days within a single week, with gaps of one or two days between papers.
Is there negative marking in CA Foundation?
Negative marking applies only to Papers 3 and 4, which are objective (MCQ) papers. For every wrong answer in these papers, 0.25 marks (one-fourth of a mark) are deducted. There is no negative marking in Papers 1 and 2, which are subjective.
What is the duration of each paper?
Papers 1 and 2 (subjective) are three hours each. Papers 3 and 4 (objective) are two hours each. Additionally, ICAI provides 15 minutes of reading time before Papers 3 and 4 during which candidates can read questions but cannot begin writing answers.
Is a calculator allowed in the CA Foundation exam?
Personal scientific calculators are prohibited. At some centres, a basic non-scientific calculator may be provided for Paper 3 (Quantitative Aptitude). Check the instructions on your admit card for the specific session's rules.
What is the medium of exam for CA Foundation?
Candidates can choose English or Hindi as the medium of examination. However, Section B of Paper 2 (Business Correspondence and Reporting) is available in English only, regardless of the medium chosen for other papers.
Is there internal choice in the subjective papers?
ICAI sometimes provides internal choice in Papers 1 and 2, such as "attempt any three out of five questions." Whether choice is provided varies by session. Read the question paper instructions carefully before beginning each subjective paper.
What is the syllabus of CA Foundation Paper 1?
Paper 1 covers Principles and Practice of Accounting including the theoretical framework, accounting process, bank reconciliation statement, inventories, depreciation, bills of exchange, rectification of errors, final accounts of sole proprietorship, partnership accounts (fundamentals, admission, retirement, dissolution), and company accounts (shares and debentures). For the complete chapter-by-chapter breakdown, visit the CA Foundation Syllabus page.
What is covered in Paper 2 (Business Laws)?
Paper 2 has two sections. Section A (60 marks) covers the Indian Contract Act 1872, Sale of Goods Act 1930, Indian Partnership Act 1932, LLP Act 2008, and Companies Act 2013 (introduction). Section B (40 marks) covers Business Correspondence and Reporting including letter writing, report writing, precis writing, grammar, and reading comprehension.
Is Paper 3 (Quantitative Aptitude) difficult?
Paper 3 is consistently one of the highest-failure papers in CA Foundation. It covers Business Mathematics (40 marks), Logical Reasoning (20 marks), and Statistics (40 marks). Students who are not from a mathematics background find Statistics and Business Mathematics challenging. However, with consistent daily practice, the paper is manageable. See CA Foundation Exam Analysis for chapter-wise difficulty trends.
How should I prepare for Section B of Paper 2 (Business Correspondence)?
Section B requires regular writing practice, not just reading. Write at least one formal letter, report, or precis every day during your preparation. Study the standard formats (business letters, formal reports, notices) from ICAI study material and practice them until they become second nature.
How much time is needed to prepare for CA Foundation?
Candidates registering with no prior commerce background should allow at least four to five months of dedicated study. Students with a strong Class 11 and 12 commerce background may be adequately prepared in three to four months with consistent effort. The four-month mandatory study period coincides with this preparation timeframe.
What is the best way to track syllabus completion?
The CA Foundation Syllabus Tracker on Aspirant Mitraa allows candidates to mark topics as complete, in progress, or pending for all four papers. Using it alongside daily study helps identify gaps and prevents last-minute discoveries of uncovered chapters.
Are previous year question papers useful for CA Foundation?
Yes, they are among the most effective preparation resources available. Previous year papers reveal how ICAI frames questions, which chapters consistently carry the most marks, and what difficulty level to train for. ICAI also releases Mock Test Papers (MTPs) and Revision Test Papers (RTPs) for each session, all available for free download. For details, visit the CA Foundation PYQ page.
What are the passing marks for CA Foundation?
Candidates must score at least 40 marks in each individual paper (40 percent) and at least 200 marks in aggregate across all four papers (50 percent). Both conditions must be met simultaneously in the same attempt.
What happens if I score above 200 aggregate but below 40 in one paper?
The attempt is a fail. Scoring below 40 in any individual paper means failing the Foundation regardless of the total aggregate score. All four individual paper thresholds must be cleared along with the aggregate.
Is there grace marking in CA Foundation?
ICAI does not have a formal grace mark policy for the CA Foundation. Occasional discretionary condonation has been applied in specific circumstances historically, but this cannot be relied upon as part of a preparation strategy.
Can I pass CA Foundation if I leave some questions blank in Papers 3 and 4?
Yes. Unattempted questions earn zero marks with no negative deduction. In fact, leaving uncertain questions unattempted in Papers 3 and 4 is often the strategically correct approach because attempting uncertain questions risks losing marks to negative marking.
What is the Distinction threshold for CA Foundation?
Candidates who score 280 marks or more out of 400 (70 percent or above in aggregate) are declared to have passed with distinction.
Are there paper-wise exemptions in CA Foundation?
No. Unlike CA Intermediate where passed groups can be retained for subsequent attempts, the CA Foundation has no exemption facility. The entire examination must be cleared in a single attempt.
When is the CA Foundation result declared?
ICAI declares the result approximately 45 days after the last exam day of a session. The January 2026 result was declared on 8 March 2026, 43 days after the last exam on 24 January 2026.
How do I check my CA Foundation result?
Visit icai.nic.in or icaiexam.icai.org, click on the result link for the relevant session, enter your roll number and registration number, and submit. The scorecard can be downloaded as a PDF.
What does the scorecard contain?
The scorecard shows the candidate's name, registration number, roll number, paper-wise marks for all four papers, total marks, and qualifying status (Passed or Failed). For top performers, it also shows the merit rank.
What is marks verification and how do I apply?
Marks verification is a process where ICAI checks that all answers in subjective papers were evaluated and the totalling is correct. It is applicable only for Papers 1 and 2. The fee is Rs. 100 per paper. The application window opens the day after result declaration and remains open for 30 days. Apply through the ICAI SSP portal or by sending a physical application to ICAI's Noida office.
What should I do if I am not satisfied with my marks even after verification?
Candidates can apply for a certified copy of their answer sheet for Papers 1 and 2. Reviewing the answer sheet reveals exactly where marks were lost and helps in planning targeted revision for the next attempt.
What is the next step after passing CA Foundation?
Register for CA Intermediate with ICAI as soon as the result is declared. Complete the Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (ICITSS) comprising a two-week IT training and a two-week Orientation Programme before the first CA Intermediate exam.
How long does it take to complete the entire CA course after clearing Foundation?
The minimum theoretical time from CA Foundation pass to Chartered Accountant designation is approximately four years:
In practice, most candidates complete the entire programme in five to seven years.
What is the CA Intermediate structure after Foundation?
CA Intermediate has six papers split into two groups of three papers each:
Unlike Foundation, CA Intermediate has group-wise exemptions. If a candidate passes Group I but fails Group II, Group I is retained for subsequent attempts.
Can I start Articleship before clearing CA Intermediate?
No. Articleship (three-year practical training under a Chartered Accountant) begins only after clearing at least one group of CA Intermediate. Some students register with a CA firm for pre-Articleship experience (without formal Articleship status), but the official Articleship period begins only after clearing Intermediate Group I or Group II.
Is the CA qualification recognized outside India?
ICAI has Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) and Memoranda of Understanding with several international accounting bodies including:
Through these agreements, Indian Chartered Accountants can obtain recognition in partner countries through a simplified process, making the CA qualification internationally portable.
