Previous year question papers are among the most effective preparation resources available for the CA Foundation examination. They reveal how ICAI frames questions from the prescribed syllabus, which chapters carry the most questions, what level of numerical complexity is expected in Paper 1, and how conceptual the questions are in Papers 2 and 4. Unlike study material which covers what to know, PYQs reveal how to demonstrate that knowledge in the exam.
This page explains the types of past papers available, how to access them, which sessions to prioritise, and how to build a PYQ-driven practice strategy for all four papers.

ICAI provides three distinct types of practice papers that serve different preparation purposes.
| Type Full Name Purpose Released By | |||
| PYQs | Previous Year Question Papers | Actual exam papers from past sessions | ICAI (official) |
| MTPs | Mock Test Papers | Practice papers released before each session (2 series) | ICAI Board of Studies |
| RTPs | Revision Test Papers | Topic-wise revision practice with suggested answers | ICAI Board of Studies |
All three types are available for free download through the ICAI official website at icai.org and icai.nic.in. Using all three types together provides the most comprehensive preparation coverage.
ICAI releases the question papers from each completed session on the official website. Papers from the following sessions are currently available:
| Session Papers Available | |
| January 2026 | Paper 1, 2, 3, 4 with suggested answers |
| September 2025 | Paper 1, 2, 3, 4 with suggested answers |
| May 2025 | Paper 1, 2, 3, 4 with suggested answers |
| January 2025 | Paper 1, 2, 3, 4 with suggested answers |
| September 2024 | Paper 1, 2, 3, 4 with suggested answers |
| June 2024 | Paper 1, 2, 3, 4 with suggested answers |
| December 2023 | Paper 1, 2, 3, 4 with suggested answers |
| June 2023 | Paper 1, 2, 3, 4 with suggested answers |
| December 2022 | Paper 1, 2, 3, 4 with suggested answers |
| June 2022 | Paper 1, 2, 3, 4 with suggested answers |
| January 2021 and earlier sessions | Available; note the earlier CPT format if accessing pre-2019 papers |
Papers from the current new scheme (post-2019) are most relevant for preparation because the syllabus and paper format align with what candidates will face. Pre-2019 CPT papers use a different format and should be used only for conceptual practice, not for format preparation.
Method 1: ICAI Official Website
Method 2: ICAI Examination Portal
Method 3: ICAI BoS Knowledge Portal ICAI's Board of Studies hosts digital study material including PYQs, MTPs, and RTPs at the BoS Knowledge Portal accessible through the student login at eservices.icai.org.
After downloading, save papers in organized folders by session and paper. Creating a structured archive prevents confusion during preparation.
MTPs are practice papers released by the ICAI Board of Studies specifically for each upcoming session. For every session, ICAI releases two series of MTPs (Series I and Series II). Each series contains practice papers for all four Foundation papers with suggested answers.
| Session MTP Series I MTP Series II | ||
| May / June Session | Approximately February to March | Approximately March to April |
| September Session | Approximately June to July | Approximately July to August |
| January Session | Approximately October to November | Approximately November |
MTPs are released on the ICAI BoS website as free PDFs. They are not previous year actual papers but are prepared by ICAI subject experts and closely reflect the difficulty and question style of the actual exam for that session.
Why MTPs are particularly valuable for CA Foundation:
RTPs are chapter-wise practice questions with suggested answers, released by ICAI for each session. Unlike PYQs and MTPs which test all chapters in a single paper, RTPs focus on topic-level revision.
RTPs are most useful in the early-to-mid stages of preparation, when candidates want to test their understanding of individual chapters before attempting full papers.
| When to Use RTPs Benefit | |
| After completing a chapter | Immediate verification of understanding |
| During revision weeks | Focused practice on weaker chapters |
| Before attempting a full MTP or PYQ | Warm-up practice |
Not all sessions carry equal preparation value. Prioritise as follows:
Papers from the most recent four sessions (January 2026, September 2025, May 2025, January 2025) are the most relevant because:
These sessions mark the beginning of the three-sessions-per-year cycle and the early implementation of the new scheme. They are useful for additional practice but may occasionally reflect transitional adjustments in question patterns.
The Common Proficiency Test (CPT) that preceded the current CA Foundation had a different syllabus and format. CPT papers are useful for conceptual understanding of accounting and economics fundamentals but should not be used for format practice.
How many PYQs to solve: At least five to six complete past papers (covering sessions from 2023 to 2026).
What to focus on:
How to use PYQ suggested answers: After attempting a question, compare your answer to the ICAI suggested answer. Pay attention to:
Common pattern: In every session, Paper 1 contains at least one large-scale partnership accounts question (admission, retirement, or dissolution) worth 15 to 20 marks. Solving every such question from past papers builds the pattern recognition needed to approach these efficiently under exam conditions.
How many PYQs to solve: At least five to six complete past papers.
Section A (Business Laws) focus areas from PYQs:
Section B (Business Correspondence) focus areas:
Key insight from PYQ analysis: Section B of Paper 2 has a significant writing component. Students who only study Section A of Paper 2 often find themselves unable to score the minimum 40 marks needed because Section B contributes 40 marks to the paper total.
How many PYQs to solve: At least five to six complete past papers under timed conditions (120 minutes).
Practice discipline for Paper 3 PYQs:
Chapter-wise PYQ patterns:
High-value insight: PYQs reveal that the Statistics section in Paper 3 has become progressively more conceptual in recent sessions. Questions that previously tested only formula application now sometimes require candidates to interpret statistical results. Study ICAI study material explanations alongside numerical practice.
How many PYQs to solve: At least five to six complete past papers under timed conditions.
Chapter-wise PYQ patterns:
Objective question strategy from PYQ practice: Paper 4 PYQs reveal that many questions have two obviously wrong options and two close ones. Students who understand conceptual distinctions (for example, the difference between movement along the demand curve and shift of the demand curve) can quickly eliminate wrong options and score efficiently.
ICAI releases suggested answers for all four papers after each session. These are not model answers but represent the ICAI-expected approach to each question. Using suggested answers correctly is as important as solving the questions themselves.
For subjective papers (Papers 1 and 2):
For objective papers (Papers 3 and 4):

| Practice Manual | Additional practice questions organized chapter-wise | icai.org students section |
The Practice Manual is a separate ICAI resource that contains additional practice questions for Papers 1 and 2 beyond what is in the study material. It is particularly useful for Paper 1 (Accounting) where volume of practice is a key success factor.
The following schedule integrates PYQ practice with ongoing syllabus coverage:
| Preparation Phase PYQ Activity | |
| After completing each chapter | Solve RTPs for that chapter |
| After completing half the syllabus | Solve one full MTP Series I paper for each paper attempted |
| After completing the full syllabus | Solve at least 3 to 4 full PYQs per paper in timed conditions |
| Final 2 to 3 weeks before exam | Alternate between PYQs and MTP Series II papers daily |
Track your syllabus coverage and chapter completion using the CA Foundation Syllabus Tracker to ensure you are not attempting PYQs for chapters you have not yet studied.
Are CA Foundation PYQs available for free? Yes. ICAI provides all previous year question papers, MTPs, and RTPs for free download through the official website at icai.org and through the BoS Knowledge Portal. No payment is required to access these resources.
How many years of PYQs should I solve for CA Foundation? Solving at least four to five years of previous papers (eight to ten sessions, given the three-sessions-per-year schedule) provides adequate exposure. For Paper 1 and Paper 3, the volume of practice matters more than the number of years, so solve as many as time allows.
Are MTPs harder or easier than the actual exam? MTPs are prepared to reflect a similar difficulty level as the actual exam. In some sessions, MTP questions have been slightly easier; in others, the actual exam has been easier than the MTP. The purpose of MTPs is practice, not prediction.
Can I find PYQs on the ICAI portal without logging in? Some ICAI resources are accessible without login through the public section of icai.org. Suggested answers and some study materials are publicly available. However, the complete BoS Knowledge Portal with all MTPs and RTPs requires a student login.
Is solving PYQs enough to clear CA Foundation? PYQs should be used alongside thorough study of ICAI study material. Solving PYQs without first studying the concepts does not produce meaningful improvement. The correct approach is to study, then practice with chapter-wise RTPs, then attempt full MTPs, and finally use PYQs as timed simulation exercises.
