The CA Foundation exam is held over four separate days, with one paper per day. Being well-prepared academically is necessary but not sufficient; candidates must also know exactly what to bring, when to arrive, how the exam hall works, and how to manage time within each paper's duration. A poorly managed exam day can cost marks even when the preparation has been thorough. This guide covers everything a CA Foundation candidate needs to know for each of the four exam days.

The CA Foundation exam is held in the afternoon session across four days. The order of papers is fixed by ICAI.
| Day Paper Name Duration Time | ||||
| Day 1 | Paper 1 | Principles and Practice of Accounting | 3 hours | 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM |
| Day 2 | Paper 2 | Business Laws | 3 hours | 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM |
| Day 3 | Paper 3 | Quantitative Aptitude | 2 hours | 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM |
| Day 4 | Paper 4 | Business Economics | 2 hours | 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM |
Candidates report to the exam centre by 1:30 PM for all four days. Gates are typically closed 15 to 30 minutes before the exam starts. Late entry is not permitted after the gate closes.
Every candidate must carry the following documents to all four exam days. Missing any document may result in entry denial.
| Document Mandatory? Notes | ||
| Printed Admit Card (Hall Ticket) | Yes | Printed on A4 paper; digital copies on mobile are not accepted |
| Original Government-issued Photo ID | Yes | Aadhaar card, PAN card, Passport, Voter ID, or Driving Licence |
| Passport-size Photographs | Yes | Same as uploaded during registration; carry 2 to 3 copies |
| Stationery: Blue or Black Pen | Yes | For subjective papers (Papers 1 and 2); pencil may be used for rough work |
| Stationery: HB Pencil | Recommended | For OMR sheet marking in Papers 3 and 4 (check admit card for specific instructions) |
Important: The admit card must be a printed copy on A4 paper. Mobile phone photographs of the admit card are explicitly not accepted at ICAI exam centres.
For each exam day in the CA Foundation, the night before is as important as any study session. Follow this routine:
Two Hours Before Sleep:
One Hour Before Sleep:
Night Before Each Paper:
| Paper Day Recommended Night-Before Activity | |
| Paper 1 (Accounting) | Quick revision of partnership accounts adjustment entries and final account format |
| Paper 2 (Business Laws) | Revision of key Contract Act sections and one practice letter for Section B |
| Paper 3 (Quantitative Aptitude) | Quick formula revision for statistics (standard deviation, correlation formula) |
| Paper 4 (Business Economics) | Revision of demand-supply diagrams and national income definitions |
Reporting Time: 1:30 PM (or as specified on the admit card)
Recommended Arrival: 1:00 PM to 1:15 PM
Arriving 15 to 30 minutes before the official reporting time gives you time to find the correct room, settle nerves, and review the admit card one last time. Arriving exactly at reporting time is unnecessarily stressful, particularly if the centre is large or unfamiliar.
Entry Steps at the Centre:
| Step What Happens | |
| 1 | Security check at the main gate; admit card and ID verified |
| 2 | Biometric attendance or manual attendance registration |
| 3 | Frisking by centre staff |
| 4 | Guided to examination hall and assigned seat |
| 5 | Answer booklet or OMR sheet distributed by invigilator |
| 6 | Exam begins at 2:00 PM on invigilator's signal |
| Prohibited Item Category | |
| Mobile phones, smartwatches, earphones, Bluetooth devices | Electronic devices |
| Scientific calculators, personal calculators | Calculating devices |
| Printed notes, books, rough paper, study material | Study material |
| Bags, pouches, purses | Personal belongings |
| Correction fluid (whitener) for OMR sheets (in some centres) | Stationery |
| Food and beverages (except water in certain cases) | Consumables |
| Any material with text (wristbands, labels, caps with writing) | Other |
What IS provided at the centre:
Paper 1 is the longest subjective paper and sets the tone for the rest of the exam week. Managing it well builds confidence for the remaining three days.
Reading Time (First 5 to 10 Minutes): Use the initial minutes to read all questions before beginning. Identify:
Recommended Time Allocation for Paper 1:
| Question Type Recommended Time | |
| Partnership accounts problems | 50 to 60 minutes (these are highest marks) |
| Final accounts of sole proprietorship | 30 to 40 minutes |
| Company accounts | 20 to 30 minutes |
| Bills, BRS, Depreciation problems | 30 to 40 minutes |
| Theory questions | 20 to 25 minutes |
| Review and checking | 10 to 15 minutes |
Key Rules for Paper 1:
Paper 2 has two very different sections requiring a clear mental shift between them.
Recommended Time Allocation for Paper 2:
| Section Recommended Time | |
| Section A: Business Laws (60 marks) | 100 to 110 minutes |
| Section B: Business Correspondence (40 marks) | 60 to 70 minutes |
| Review | 15 to 20 minutes |
Key Rules for Paper 2 Section A:
Key Rules for Paper 2 Section B:
Paper 3 is the most time-pressured paper in the CA Foundation. With 100 questions in 120 minutes (plus 15 minutes reading time), the average time per question is 72 seconds. Negative marking adds another layer of pressure.
Using the 15-Minute Reading Time:
Recommended Approach for Paper 3:
| Pass Time Activity | ||
| First pass | 60 to 70 minutes | Attempt all confident questions in Business Mathematics and Logical Reasoning |
| Second pass | 40 to 50 minutes | Attempt confident Statistics questions; revisit partially confident Mathematics questions |
| Review | 10 minutes | Check OMR sheet, verify confident answers are correctly marked |
OMR Sheet Discipline for Paper 3:
The Selective Attempt Principle: Since negative marking applies, the target should be to attempt 60 to 70 questions with high accuracy rather than all 100 with mixed accuracy. Four wrong answers cancel one right answer. Attempting uncertain questions brings the net score down.
Paper 4 is typically the most straightforward paper and provides an opportunity to close out the exam week on a positive note.
Using the 15-Minute Reading Time for Paper 4:
Recommended Approach for Paper 4:
| Pass Time Activity | ||
| First pass | 60 to 70 minutes | Attempt all confident conceptual and factual questions |
| Second pass | 40 to 45 minutes | Attempt remaining questions with partial confidence |
| Review | 15 minutes | Check OMR sheet; do not second-guess confident answers |
Key Rules for Paper 4:
The CA Foundation is spread over four days, giving candidates evening revision time between papers.
| After Paper What to Do | |
| After Paper 1 | Briefly review Paper 2 (Business Laws) notes; focus on Indian Contract Act provisions and Section B formats |
| After Paper 2 | Review Paper 3 formula sheet for Statistics and Business Mathematics |
| After Paper 3 | Light revision of Paper 4 Economics concepts; avoid intensive study; rest is important |
| After Paper 4 | Exam complete; no action needed |
Avoid exhaustive study sessions between papers. Two to three hours of focused revision per evening is more effective than an eight-hour study session that depletes concentration for the next paper day.
| Problem Action | |
| Forgot admit card | Report to the invigilator. Some centres may allow entry with alternative identification after verification, but this is at the centre's discretion. Contact ICAI helpline if needed. |
| Fell unwell during the exam | Alert the invigilator immediately. Basic first aid is available at most ICAI exam centres. |
| OMR sheet marking error | Inform the invigilator before submitting. The procedure for corrections is specified in the admit card instructions. |
| Exam centre not visible or wrong address | Check the admit card address again. Call ICAI's helpline: 011-3011-0444 for emergency guidance. |
| Power outage | ICAI centres have backup power. Alert the invigilator if the exam hall remains without power for more than two to three minutes. |
| Question paper appears to have a printing error | Alert the invigilator and make a note on your answer sheet. Do not attempt to resolve it independently. |
After completing all four papers:
Check the ICAI answer key (Papers 3 and 4): ICAI typically releases unofficial answer keys for the objective papers within a few days of each paper. Official answer keys are released after all sessions of a session cycle complete. Use these to estimate your score.
Do not discuss answers at the exam centre gate: Group discussions immediately after the exam about which answer was correct are unreliable and tend to cause unnecessary anxiety. Wait for the official answer key.
Preserve the admit card: The admit card is required for downloading the scorecard and for applying for marks verification. Store it safely until after the result.
Monitor the ICAI website: Result, pass percentage, and merit list are announced at icai.nic.in and icai.org approximately six to eight weeks after the last exam day.
For result checking steps and scorecard download instructions, visit the CA Foundation Result page.
Can I use a calculator in Paper 3? Personal scientific calculators are prohibited. A basic non-scientific calculator may be provided at some centres for Paper 3. Check the specific instructions on your admit card for the current session.
Is there a reading time allowed before subjective papers? ICAI provides 15 minutes of reading time before Papers 3 and 4 (objective papers). For Papers 1 and 2 (subjective), the three-hour exam time begins at the scheduled start time. Candidates can use the initial minutes to read all questions before beginning to write.
Can I leave the exam hall early? ICAI does not permit candidates to leave the examination hall before a specified time. Check the instructions on your admit card for the current session's specific rules. In most sessions, early exit is not permitted.
What pen should I use for subjective papers? Use a blue or black ball-point pen. Pencil may be used for diagrams and rough work but answers must be in pen. Red or other coloured pens are not permitted.
What if I make a mistake in the answer booklet for Paper 1? Draw a single line through the incorrect portion and write the correction above or alongside. Do not use whitener or scribble heavily over errors in the answer booklet.
