Before beginning preparation or registering for the CA Foundation examination, every student must verify that they meet all the eligibility conditions prescribed by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). Missing a registration deadline, registering with incorrect details, or misunderstanding the study period requirement are among the most common and preventable reasons that students miss an exam cycle. This page provides the complete and authoritative eligibility framework for the CA Foundation under the ICAI New Scheme of Education and Training.

The primary eligibility condition for the CA Foundation is passing Class 12 or an equivalent examination from any recognized examining board or authority. Key points:
Students who have passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination from an international board or foreign educational system are eligible, provided the qualification is recognized as equivalent to the Indian Class 12 standard. If in doubt about equivalence, candidates should seek written confirmation from ICAI before registering.
The ICAI does not prescribe any minimum or maximum age limit for the CA Foundation examination. The exam is open to candidates of all ages who meet the educational qualification requirements.
This makes the CA Foundation accessible to:
There is no upper age restriction that prevents older candidates from registering or appearing.
One of the most critical eligibility conditions that students frequently overlook is the mandatory four-month study period. After registering for the CA Foundation course with the ICAI Board of Studies, candidates must complete a minimum four-month study period before they are eligible to sit for the examination.
This rule has a direct practical consequence: registration must be completed at least four months before the month in which the exam is held.
| Examination Session Last Date to Register | |
| May / June 2026 | 1 January 2026 |
| September 2026 | 1 May 2026 |
| January 2027 | 1 September 2026 |
A student who registers on 2 January 2026 is not eligible to appear in the May 2026 session; they must wait for the September 2026 session instead.
The four-month period is counted from the date of registration, not from the date of payment or the date of receiving study material. It is the registration date recorded in the ICAI system that governs eligibility.
ICAI has provided for provisional registration at two stages, making it possible for students to begin their formal CA Foundation study even before completing their Class 12 examination.
Students who have passed Class 10 can register for the CA Foundation course provisionally. This allows them to begin studying and complete the four-month study period requirement while still in Class 11 or Class 12. However, they can appear in the Foundation examination only after they have appeared in the Class 12 board examination.
For provisional registration after Class 10, candidates submit:
Students who are in the final year of Class 12 and have not yet received their results can register using their Class 12 admit card (hall ticket) instead of the mark sheet. This is particularly useful for students who want to register early and ensure they meet the study period requirement for the next Foundation attempt.
After the Class 12 result is declared, the student must upload the Class 12 mark sheet to the ICAI SSP portal within the prescribed time limit.
The CA Foundation does not mandate any specific stream or subject combination at the Class 12 level. Students from all backgrounds are eligible:
| Class 12 Stream Eligible for CA Foundation? | |
| Commerce (with or without Mathematics) | Yes |
| Science (PCM, PCB, or any combination) | Yes |
| Arts / Humanities | Yes |
| Vocational streams from recognized boards | Yes (subject to board recognition) |
Commerce students may find the transition to CA Foundation smoother because of their prior exposure to accounting and economics. However, students from other streams have successfully cleared the Foundation with structured preparation, since the ICAI provides comprehensive study material that does not assume prior subject knowledge.
Once registered for the CA Foundation, the registration remains valid for three years. During this period, candidates can appear in up to nine examination sessions (three per year over three years).
If a candidate does not clear the Foundation within three years, they have the option to revalidate their registration by paying a revalidation fee to ICAI. Revalidation extends the registration validity for a further period. Candidates who do not revalidate within the allowed time must re-register from scratch, paying the full registration fee again.
| Validity Period Details | |
| Initial Registration Validity | 3 years from date of registration |
| Maximum Attempts Within Validity | 9 (3 sessions per year) |
| Revalidation | Available after expiry; fee payable to ICAI |
| Re-registration | Required if revalidation not done in time |
The ICAI allows certain graduates and postgraduates to bypass the CA Foundation and register directly for CA Intermediate. This is called the Direct Entry Scheme. Understanding this route is important because it affects whether a student needs to sit for the Foundation at all.
| Qualification Minimum Marks Required | |
| Commerce Graduate / Postgraduate | 55% in the graduation or postgraduation degree |
| Non-Commerce Graduate / Postgraduate | 60% in the graduation or postgraduation degree |
| Intermediate level of ICSI (CS) | Pass in Intermediate (no marks requirement) |
| Intermediate level of ICMAI (CMA) | Pass in Intermediate (no marks requirement) |
Students who qualify for Direct Entry must register for CA Intermediate directly and simultaneously register for a four-week mandatory Orientation Programme and Information Technology Training (ITT) before their first Intermediate exam.
Graduates who do not meet the minimum marks threshold for Direct Entry must appear for the CA Foundation first and clear it before registering for CA Intermediate.
For students who have just completed Class 12, the Foundation route is the only available path. The Direct Entry route is not available to Class 12 pass students regardless of their marks. A student must first complete graduation to use the Direct Entry route.
The CA Foundation is open to Indian citizens as well as foreign nationals and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). Overseas candidates must fulfill the same educational qualification and study period requirements.
| Category Registration Fee | |
| Indian Students | Rs. 9,000 |
| Students in J&K and 8 North-Eastern States | Rs. 2,250 (75% concession) |

Proof of nationality is required for foreign students at the time of registration.

All documents must be uploaded in the prescribed format and size on the ICAI Self Service Portal at the time of registration. The name, date of birth, and gender entered during registration must exactly match the Class 10 certificate. ICAI does not allow corrections to these fields after submission.
Before visiting the ICAI portal to begin registration, verify the following:
Class 12 board recognition: Confirm that your Class 12 board is recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) or is a state or national board in India. Students from state boards, CBSE, ICSE, and most recognized Indian boards are automatically eligible.
Study period calculation: Count forward four months from the date you plan to register and confirm that the exam session falls after that date. Register at least one to two weeks before the cut-off date to avoid portal congestion near the deadline.
Name consistency: The name entered in the ICAI registration form must match the name on the Class 10 certificate exactly. Discrepancies in spelling or initials are not correctable after form submission.
Email and mobile number: Use your own active email address and mobile number. All ICAI communications including OTPs, study material dispatch confirmation, admit card notifications, and result alerts are sent to these contact details.
Can I register for CA Foundation while still in Class 11? ICAI now allows provisional registration after passing Class 10, which means students can register as early as Class 11. However, they can only appear in the exam after passing or appearing in their Class 12 board examination.
