The CA Intermediate examination is the second and most pivotal level of the Chartered Accountancy programme conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). It serves as the bridge between the foundational knowledge built in CA Foundation and the advanced professional expertise tested at the CA Final level. Clearing both groups of CA Intermediate is a prerequisite for beginning Articleship under the new scheme and for eventually appearing in CA Final.
Under the ICAI New Scheme of Education and Training, which applies to all students appearing from May 2024 onwards, the CA Intermediate course has been significantly restructured. The number of papers has been reduced from eight to six, a standardised 70:30 pattern (70 marks descriptive, 30 marks objective MCQ) has been introduced across all papers, and the Articleship duration has been reduced from three years to two years.
This guide covers every dimension of the CA Intermediate examination under the new scheme: who is eligible, how to register, what the syllabus covers across all six papers, what the exam pattern is, how passing criteria work at the group level, and how to prepare effectively.

CA Intermediate is the second level of the three-tier Chartered Accountancy programme in India. It follows the CA Foundation (or the Direct Entry route for graduates) and precedes the CA Final. A candidate must clear both Group I and Group II of CA Intermediate before they can register for CA Final and before the Articleship training is officially counted under the new scheme.
Under the ICAI New Scheme applicable from May 2024:

| January 2027 | January 2027 (dates to be announced) | March 2027 |
Two routes lead to CA Intermediate registration:
Candidates who have passed CA Foundation with a minimum aggregate of 50 percent can register for CA Intermediate. This is the primary route for students entering the CA programme after Class 12.
Candidates with the following qualifications can bypass CA Foundation and register directly for CA Intermediate:
| Qualification Minimum Marks | |
| Commerce Graduate / Postgraduate | 55% |
| Non-Commerce Graduate / Postgraduate | 60% |
| Passed Intermediate level of ICSI (Company Secretary) | No marks requirement |
| Passed Intermediate level of ICMAI (Cost Accountant) | No marks requirement |
Final-year graduation students can register provisionally; they must submit final marksheets confirming the required percentage within seven days of the result.
A mandatory eight-month study period from the date of registration must be completed before appearing in the examination. This is longer than the four-month requirement at the Foundation level, reflecting the greater depth and volume of the CA Intermediate syllabus.
| Session Last Date to Register | |
| May 2026 | 1 September 2025 |
| September 2026 | 1 January 2026 |
| January 2027 | 1 May 2026 |

Under the ICAI New Scheme, CA Intermediate has six papers divided equally between two groups.
| Paper Name Marks | ||
| Paper 1 | Advanced Accounting | 100 |
| Paper 2 | Corporate and Other Laws | 100 |
| Paper 3 | Taxation (Income Tax + GST) | 100 |
| Paper Name Marks | ||
| Paper 4 | Cost and Management Accounting | 100 |
| Paper 5 | Auditing and Ethics | 100 |
| Paper 6 | Financial Management and Strategic Management | 100 |
Each paper is 100 marks with a 70:30 split (70 marks descriptive, 30 marks objective MCQ). For the complete chapter-wise topic breakdown of all six papers, visit the CA Intermediate Syllabus page.
Track your chapter-wise coverage across all six papers using the CA Intermediate Syllabus Tracker.
The most important structural change under the new scheme is the uniform 70:30 pattern across all six papers. Every paper is now a blend of subjective and objective questions.
| Component Marks Format | ||
| Descriptive / Subjective Questions | 70 | Written long and short answers; numerical problems |
| Objective MCQs (Case-study based) | 30 | Four-option multiple choice questions based on practical scenarios |
| Total | 100 | Combined in a single paper |
No negative marking: Unlike CA Foundation Papers 3 and 4, the MCQ component in CA Intermediate has no negative marking. Every wrong MCQ answer earns zero; there is no deduction.
Case-study format for MCQs: The 30-mark MCQ section is not based on simple factual recall. ICAI frames these questions around practical scenarios or case studies, testing whether candidates can apply their subject knowledge to real-world situations.

The CA Intermediate passing criteria operates at the group level, which is fundamentally different from the CA Foundation's overall aggregate system.
| Condition Requirement | |
| Minimum marks in each paper | 40 out of 100 (40%) |
| Minimum aggregate in each group | 150 out of 300 (50%) per group |
Both conditions must be satisfied within the same group in the same attempt. A candidate must pass each group separately. Passing Group I does not automatically qualify Group II.
Unlike CA Foundation where the entire exam must be cleared in one attempt, CA Intermediate allows group-wise exemptions:
Candidates who score 60 percent or above in aggregate for a group are declared to have passed with Distinction for that group.
For subject-wise passing mark data and pass percentage trends, visit the CA Intermediate Cutoff page.
CA Intermediate registration is done online through the ICAI SSP portal at eservices.icai.org.
| Category Registration Fee | |
| Both Groups | Rs. 18,000 |
| Single Group | As per ICAI notification |
| Direct Entry Students | Rs. 18,000 + additional Rs. 200 |
| J&K and North-Eastern States | 75% fee concession applicable |
Under the new scheme, CA Intermediate registration is valid for five years from the date of registration. After five years, revalidation is available once by paying Rs. 400. The extended five-year validity (versus four years under the old scheme) gives candidates more time to clear both groups.
For the complete step-by-step registration process, documents required, and exam form submission guide, visit the CA Intermediate Application Process page.
Before beginning the two-year Articleship, every CA Intermediate student must complete the Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (ICITSS). This is a mandatory training programme of approximately four weeks divided into two components:
| Component Duration Fee (Approx.) | ||
| Information Technology (IT) Training | 15 days | Rs. 6,500 |
| Orientation Programme | 6 days | Rs. 3,500 |
ICITSS can be completed at any ICAI regional office or branch. It must be completed before the Articleship begins. Direct Entry students must also complete ICITSS before starting Articleship.
One of the most significant changes under the new scheme is the reduction of the Articleship period from three years to two years. Articleship is the practical training component of the CA programme during which students work under a practising Chartered Accountant.
| Parameter Old Scheme New Scheme | ||
| Articleship Duration | 3 years | 2 years |
| When Articleship Begins | After passing at least one Intermediate group | After passing both Intermediate groups and completing ICITSS |
| Articleship During Intermediate | Allowed | Not allowed; must clear both groups first |
This is a fundamental change. Under the old scheme, students could begin Articleship after passing one group of Intermediate. Under the new scheme, both groups of Intermediate must be cleared before Articleship begins.
ICAI has introduced Self-Paced Online Modules (SPMs) as part of the new scheme. These are four modules that must be completed by students during the Articleship period before appearing for CA Final. They are not exams in the traditional sense but are online learning modules with an assessment component.
| Module Coverage | |
| SPM 1 | Governance, Risk and Ethics |
| SPM 2 | Financial Services and Capital Markets |
| SPM 3 | Global Financial Reporting Standards |
| SPM 4 | Multidisciplinary Case Study |
SPMs do not affect CA Intermediate results; they are relevant only at the CA Final stage.
CA Intermediate is significantly more demanding than CA Foundation. The syllabus across six papers is voluminous, the 70:30 pattern requires preparation for both numerical problems and case-study MCQs simultaneously, and the passing criteria require clearing each group as a unit rather than performing well in just one or two papers.
Every paper requires two types of preparation:
The MCQ questions are framed around real-world situations. A paper on Auditing (Paper 5) may present a scenario describing an audit situation and ask which standard applies or what the auditor should do. This requires conceptual clarity rather than formula application.
Paper 1: Advanced Accounting covers complex accounting standards, consolidated financial statements, amalgamation, and branch accounts. Practice daily with complex numericals. Financial statements and consolidation are the highest-weightage chapters.
Paper 2: Corporate and Other Laws covers the Companies Act 2013 in depth plus allied legislations. Scenario-based application is essential. Reading ICAI study material alongside the Companies Act bare provisions builds the analytical skill needed for both subjective and MCQ questions.
Paper 3: Taxation is split between Income Tax (approximately 60 marks) and GST (approximately 40 marks). This is a highly dynamic paper because tax laws are amended annually. Always study with the assessment year applicable to the current exam session.
Paper 4: Cost and Management Accounting tests both standard costing methods and management decision-making tools. Practice numerical problems daily; theory alone is insufficient.
Paper 5: Auditing and Ethics is largely theoretical but increasingly tested through case-based scenarios in both subjective and MCQ formats. Standards on Auditing (SAs) must be memorized by number and content.
Paper 6: Financial Management and Strategic Management is split between Financial Management (approximately 60 marks) and Strategic Management (approximately 40 marks). Financial Management requires numerical practice for capital budgeting, working capital, and leverage. Strategic Management is conceptual.
Track your chapter-wise completion across all six papers systematically using the CA Intermediate Syllabus Tracker. Given the volume of the Intermediate syllabus, systematic tracking prevents the common problem of leaving chapters incomplete without realizing it until the exam is close.
ICAI PYQs for CA Intermediate are available free from the official website. Analysis of previous papers for chapter-wise question frequency reveals which chapters are consistently high-weightage. For session-wise papers and analysis, visit the CA Intermediate PYQ page.
After passing both groups of CA Intermediate and completing ICITSS, candidates begin their two-year Articleship under a practising Chartered Accountant or a CA firm.
| Stage Duration Activity | ||
| CA Intermediate (Both Groups) | 8 to 18 months (depends on attempts) | Study and exams |
| ICITSS Completion | 4 weeks | IT Training + Orientation |
| Articleship | 2 years | Practical training under a CA |
| Self-Paced Online Modules | During Articleship | Four online learning modules |
| CA Final | During last 6 months of or after Articleship | Final qualification exam |
After clearing CA Final and completing Articleship, candidates apply for ICAI membership and receive the Chartered Accountant (CA) designation.
