The eligibility criteria for CA Intermediate are more nuanced than those for CA Foundation because two distinct routes lead to registration. Understanding which route applies, what the mandatory study period requires, and what ICITSS training involves is essential before beginning the registration process. This page covers every eligibility condition prescribed by ICAI under the New Scheme of Education and Training.

The Foundation Route is the standard path for students who have completed their CA Foundation examination. To be eligible for CA Intermediate through this route:
Once these conditions are met, candidates can register for CA Intermediate immediately after receiving their Foundation pass result.
The Direct Entry Scheme allows candidates who have completed their graduation or postgraduation to bypass CA Foundation and register directly for CA Intermediate. ICAI introduced this scheme in August 2012 to make the CA programme accessible to experienced graduates.
| Qualification Minimum Marks Required | |
| Commerce Graduate (B.Com, BBA, and equivalent) | 55% aggregate in the graduation degree |
| Commerce Postgraduate (M.Com and equivalent) | 55% aggregate |
| Non-Commerce Graduate (BA, BSc, BE, MBBS, and any other stream) | 60% aggregate |
| Non-Commerce Postgraduate | 60% aggregate |
| Passed Intermediate level of ICSI (Institute of Company Secretaries) | No minimum marks condition |
| Passed Intermediate level of ICMAI (Institute of Cost Accountants) | No minimum marks condition |
Percentage calculation: The minimum percentage is calculated on the aggregate of all subjects in the graduation or postgraduation degree, not on specific subjects. Candidates with 52 percent in B.Com do not qualify for Direct Entry and must clear CA Foundation first.
Final-year students: Candidates who have appeared in the final examination of their graduation or postgraduation but whose results are awaited can register for CA Intermediate provisionally. They must submit final marksheets confirming the required percentage to the ICAI regional office within seven days of the result declaration. If the final percentage falls below the threshold, the provisional registration is cancelled.
No exemption from ICITSS: Direct Entry candidates are not exempt from ICITSS training. They must complete the IT Training (15 days) and Orientation Programme (6 days) before beginning their Articleship, just as Foundation Route candidates do.
Under the ICAI New Scheme, every CA Intermediate student must complete a mandatory eight-month study period from the date of registration before appearing in the examination.
This is longer than the CA Foundation's four-month requirement and reflects the greater depth and volume of the six-paper CA Intermediate syllabus.
| Session Last Date to Register to be Eligible | |
| May 2026 | 1 September 2025 |
| September 2026 | 1 January 2026 |
| January 2027 | 1 May 2026 |
A candidate who registers on 2 January 2026 completes eight months on 2 September 2026 and is therefore eligible for the September 2026 session but not the May 2026 session.
The eight-month period begins from the date of registration as recorded in the ICAI system. Students should register at least two to three weeks before the cut-off date to avoid portal delays or last-minute complications.
ICITSS is a mandatory pre-Articleship training programme that every CA Intermediate student must complete before beginning their two-year Articleship. It is divided into two components:
| Component Duration Fee (Approx.) Mode | |||
| Information Technology (IT) Training | 15 days (working days) | Rs. 6,500 | Physical classes at ICAI branch or online |
| Orientation Programme | 6 days | Rs. 3,500 | Physical classes at ICAI branch |
ICITSS can be completed at any ICAI regional office, branch, or ICAI-accredited centre. The IT Training and Orientation Programme can be done in either order and need not be consecutive.
ICITSS can be undertaken at any point after registration for CA Intermediate and before Articleship commences. It does not affect eligibility to appear in the CA Intermediate examination. Students can take the exam and simultaneously complete ICITSS during their preparation period.
A common misconception is that ICITSS must be completed before appearing for CA Intermediate. This is incorrect. ICITSS must be completed before beginning Articleship. Students can appear for CA Intermediate exams without having completed ICITSS; however, they cannot begin Articleship until ICITSS is done.
Registering for CA Intermediate and being eligible to appear in the exam are two separate steps.
To appear in the examination, a candidate must:
The following do NOT affect exam eligibility:
Under the new scheme, candidates can register for:
The registration fee differs based on whether both groups or only one group is chosen. However, most ICAI guidance encourages students to register for both groups to get the maximum benefit from the five-year registration validity.
For each exam attempt, candidates can choose to appear in:
This flexibility allows candidates to strategically pace their preparation and attempt groups when they are fully ready.
| Parameter Details | |
| Initial Registration Validity | 5 years from date of registration |
| Revalidation | Once after initial validity, fee Rs. 400 |
| Re-registration | Required if revalidation is not done in time |
The five-year validity under the new scheme (versus four years under the old scheme) gives candidates significantly more time to clear both groups. With three sessions per year, a five-year registration provides up to 15 attempts.
ICAI does not prescribe any minimum or maximum age limit for CA Intermediate. Students who pass CA Foundation at 17 or 18 years of age can register immediately. Working professionals in their 30s or 40s are equally eligible.
CA Intermediate is open to Indian citizens and overseas candidates. Foreign nationals and NRIs who meet the educational qualification requirements can register by paying the applicable overseas fees. For foreign degrees, an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) or the UGC may be required for Direct Entry candidates.
| Document Requirement | |
| CA Foundation Pass Certificate or Mark Sheet | For Foundation Route |
| Graduation Mark Sheet or Provisional Certificate | For Direct Entry Route |
| Appearing Certificate (for final-year students) | If graduation result is awaited |
| Class 10 Mark Sheet | For name and date of birth verification |
| Class 12 Mark Sheet | Required during registration |
| Passport-size Photograph | Recent colour photograph on white background |
| Scanned Signature | Black or dark blue ink on white paper |
| ICSI / ICMAI Intermediate Pass Certificate | If registering through professional body route |
Candidates who had registered for CA Intermediate under the old scheme (before the new scheme's implementation) and are transitioning to the new scheme should note:
| Parameter Old Scheme New Scheme | ||
| Number of Papers | 8 papers (4 per group) | 6 papers (3 per group) |
| Articleship | After passing one group | After passing both groups + ICITSS |
| Articleship Duration | 3 years | 2 years |
| Registration Validity | 4 years | 5 years |
| Study Period | 8 months | 8 months (unchanged) |
Students who had already cleared some groups under the old scheme and are transitioning should check the specific transition guidelines on the official ICAI website.
Can a student register for CA Intermediate directly after Class 12 without clearing Foundation? No. Class 12 pass students cannot use the Direct Entry route. Direct Entry requires graduation or postgraduation with the specified marks. Class 12 students must clear CA Foundation first.
If I scored 48 percent in CA Foundation, am I eligible for CA Intermediate? No. The minimum aggregate required in CA Foundation for Intermediate registration is 50 percent (200 marks out of 400). A score of 48 percent (192 marks) does not meet this threshold.
Does the percentage in any one CA Foundation paper matter for Intermediate registration? No. Only the aggregate percentage (50 percent or above) matters for Intermediate registration, not the individual paper marks.
Can a Commerce graduate with 52 percent use the Direct Entry route? No. Commerce graduates require a minimum of 55 percent for Direct Entry. A student with 52 percent must clear CA Foundation before registering for Intermediate.
Is ICITSS required before appearing in the CA Intermediate exam? No. ICITSS is required before beginning the two-year Articleship. A candidate can appear for CA Intermediate exams without having completed ICITSS.
Can I register for only Group I of CA Intermediate initially? Yes. ICAI allows single group registration. Candidates can register for Group I first, and register for Group II separately later within the five-year validity period.
