The CAT 2026 application process is the administrative gateway to appearing in India's most prestigious MBA entrance examination. Unlike NEET or JEE Main, which are managed by NTA as a government body, CAT registration is managed by the convening IIM (expected IIM Indore for 2026) through its dedicated portal at iimcat.ac.in. This distinction matters because the process, correction window policies, and helpdesk support work differently from government exam portals.
Registration for CAT 2026 is expected to open on August 1, 2026, and close on September 20, 2026. Candidates who miss the registration deadline cannot appear in CAT 2026 and must wait for the following year. The registration process also includes simultaneous programme selection for IIMs and other participating B-schools, a feature unique to CAT that does not exist in most other entrance exams.
This page covers the complete CAT 2026 application process: step-by-step registration guide, document upload specifications, fee structure, IIM and B-school programme selection, test city preference strategy, correction window rules, and the most common registration mistakes.
All information is based on the official CAT 2025 registration process (registration: August 1 to September 13, 2025; extended to September 15, 2025) conducted by IIM Kozhikode. CAT 2026 is expected to follow an identical structure.
Official Portal: All CAT 2026 registration must be completed exclusively at iimcat.ac.in. Do not use any third-party website or agent.

After submitting and verifying via OTP on your mobile, the system generates your CAT 2026 User ID (a numeric ID) and sends your Password to your registered email. These credentials are permanent for all CAT 2026 activities. Store them securely.
Log in using your CAT User ID and Password. The application form has multiple sections.
Personal Details:
Academic Details: This is one of the most important sections for IIM shortlisting, as academic marks are part of every IIM's composite score formula.
Enter the following for each qualification:
| Qualification Details Required | |
| Class 10 | Board, year of passing, marks (percentage or grade, aggregate) |
| Class 12 | Board, year of passing, marks, stream |
| Bachelor's Degree | University, institution, degree name, year of completion (or current year if final year), aggregate marks or CGPA |
| Post-Graduation (if any) | University, degree, marks |
For final-year graduation students: Select "Appearing" for the degree status and enter your current aggregate up to the last completed semester.
CGPA to Percentage Conversion: If your university uses CGPA, enter the CGPA and the university's conversion formula. If no formula exists, IIMs apply their own benchmark (typically 7.0/10 = 60%).
Work Experience: This section is optional for appearance in CAT but important for IIM selection. Enter:
Work experience is calculated in full months of full-time post-graduation employment. Part-time work, internships, and freelance projects are generally not counted.
Category: Select your category: General, NC-OBC, EWS, SC, ST, or PwD. This determines:
Disability Details (if applicable): If selecting PwD, enter the type of disability, percentage of disability, and whether you require a scribe for the exam.
This step is unique to CAT. Unlike NEET or JEE Main where programme selection happens separately through counselling portals, CAT allows candidates to apply to IIM programmes and other participating B-schools directly during registration.
How Programme Selection Works:
The registration form lists all 22 IIM programmes (PGP, MBA, PGDM variants) and all participating non-IIM B-schools (FMS, MDI, SPJIMR, IIFT etc.) that accept CAT scores. Candidates tick the programmes they want to apply to.
Fee Structure for Programme Selection:
Strategy for Programme Selection: Select all IIM programmes you are genuinely interested in. Do not self-filter too aggressively at the registration stage; IIM shortlisting will filter candidates based on percentile. For non-IIM B-schools, select only those where you would seriously consider joining if offered, given the additional fee per school.
Select up to 5 preferred test cities in order of preference. CAT 2026 is expected across approximately 170 cities in India based on IIM Kozhikode's 2025 pattern (339 test centres across 170 cities).
Test City Selection Strategy:
Photograph Specifications:
| Parameter Requirement | |
| Format | JPEG or JPG |
| Size | 20 KB to 200 KB |
| Dimensions | At least 200 x 230 pixels |
| Background | White or very light |
| Recency | Taken within 3 months of application |
| Face coverage | Clear face, minimum 80% of frame |
| Headgear | Not permitted except for religious reasons |
| Spectacles | Acceptable (avoid tinted lenses) |
Signature Specifications:
| Parameter Requirement | |
| Format | JPEG or JPG |
| Size | 10 KB to 100 KB |
| Background | White paper |
| Ink | Black or blue ballpoint pen |
| Style | Regular handwritten signature |
Category Certificate (if applicable): NC-OBC, EWS, SC, ST, and PwD certificates must be uploaded. Check validity requirements: EWS certificates expire at the end of the financial year; NC-OBC certificates are typically valid for 3 years. If your certificate has expired or will expire before the IIM document verification stage (February to March 2027), obtain a fresh one before uploading.
After completing all sections, you will be directed to the fee payment page. The fee is displayed automatically based on your selected category.
CAT 2026 Expected Application Fee (Based on CAT 2025 Rates):
| Category CAT Application Fee | |
| General / UR | Rs. 2,600 |
| EWS | Rs. 2,600 |
| NC-OBC | Rs. 2,600 |
| SC | Rs. 1,300 |
| ST | Rs. 1,300 |
| PwD | Rs. 1,300 |
Additional fees for non-IIM B-school programme selections are charged separately based on the programmes chosen.
Accepted Payment Methods:
The CAT application fee is completely non-refundable under all circumstances including withdrawal, disqualification, or exam cancellation.
Payment Tips:
Review every field entered before final submission. Once submitted, very few fields can be changed.
After submission:
The confirmation page contains your CAT User ID, test city preferences, category, and the programmes you have applied to. Keep it safe until the entire admission process is complete.
The CAT correction window typically opens for 3 to 5 days after the registration deadline closes. In CAT 2025, the correction window allowed changes to limited fields only.
| Field Editable? | |
| Photograph | Yes |
| Signature | Yes |
| Test city preferences | Yes |
| Programme selections (adding programmes) | Yes (additional fee for added B-schools) |
| PwD status and scribe request | Yes (with documentation) |
| Category | Generally not editable |
| Academic details (marks, year) | Generally not editable |
| Personal details (name, DOB) | Not editable |
| Registered email or mobile | Not editable |
| User ID | Not editable |
Only 3 items are formally editable in most CAT years: photograph, signature, and test city preferences. Academic details, category, and personal information entered during registration are considered verified entries and cannot be changed.
This makes accuracy at the time of initial form filling absolutely critical. Do not rely on the correction window to fix academic marks or category errors.
The information entered during CAT registration, particularly academic marks, feeds directly into the IIM shortlisting process. Every IIM publishes a shortlisting formula that includes:
Example: IIM Calcutta 2025-27 Batch Shortlisting Weights
| Parameter Weight | |
| CAT Score | 30 out of 100 points |
| Class 10 Marks | 10 out of 100 points |
| Class 12 Marks | 10 out of 100 points |
| Graduation Marks | 10 out of 100 points |
| Gender Diversity | 2 out of 100 points |
| Work Experience | 8 out of 100 points |
| WAT and PI | 30 out of 100 points |
Incorrect entry of academic marks in the CAT application can affect your shortlisting score. Enter marks accurately from your official marksheets.
| Mistake Consequence Prevention | ||
| Using a temporary email ID | Missing User ID and all future communications | Use a permanent personal email, not a college email |
| Wrong academic marks entered | Affects IIM composite score and shortlisting | Cross-check marksheets before entry |
| Forgetting to add non-IIM B-schools during registration | Cannot apply to those schools later without re-registration | Finalise programme list before starting form |
| Uploading wrong photograph format | Upload failure and incomplete registration | Convert to JPEG and verify size before uploading |
| Paying wrong fee amount | Underpayment leads to incomplete application | Let the system auto-calculate based on category |
| Not downloading confirmation page | No proof of registration if server issue | Download and print immediately after submission |
| Selecting incorrect category | Wrong reservation benefit; mismatch during verification | Verify category from official certificate before selecting |
| Leaving test city preferences to chance | Assigned to an inconvenient city | List 5 realistic preferences including at least one major city |
