The CAT result is not the end of the MBA admission journey. It is the beginning of a 4 to 5 month process that moves from scorecard download to IIM shortlisting, WAT-PI preparation, personal interview, and final admission offer. Understanding what the CAT scorecard shows, what it does not show, and what to do in the days immediately following result declaration is as important as the preparation itself.
Unlike NEET or JEE Main results (which show raw marks and a single rank), the CAT scorecard shows scaled scores, sectional percentiles, and overall percentile. There is no All India Rank in CAT. Each IIM independently processes these percentiles through its own composite score formula to generate shortlists. A candidate with identical CAT scores may receive calls from 8 IIMs or from only 2, depending on their academic profile, work experience, and category.
This page covers the complete CAT 2026 result process: expected result date, step-by-step scorecard download, field-by-field scorecard explanation, official CAT 2025 result statistics, scaled score vs percentile understanding, sectional percentile importance, the answer key challenge process, and the complete post-result action plan from response sheet to final IIM admission.
Live Update: The CAT 2026 result and scorecard download link will be posted here immediately upon official declaration by IIM Indore at iimcat.ac.in. Expected: third week of December 2026.

Step 7: Log out after downloading.
iimcat.ac.in receives extremely high traffic in the first 30 to 60 minutes after result declaration. If the page does not load, wait 20 to 30 minutes and retry. The CAT helpdesk (1-800-210-0175) is available for technical support during result week.
The CAT scorecard is structured differently from NEET or JEE Main scorecards. It shows scaled scores and percentiles, not raw marks and AIR.
| Field What It Shows How to Use It | ||
| CAT User ID | Your registration number | Required for all IIM application portals |
| Name | As entered during registration | Must match ID documents for WAT-PI verification |
| Date of Birth | As entered during registration | Identity verification |
| VARC Scaled Score | Section-specific scaled score | Used in composite score formulas and tie-breaking |
| VARC Percentile | Percentage of candidates scored below you in VARC | Compared against IIM sectional cutoffs |
| DILR Scaled Score | Section-specific scaled score | Used in composite and tie-breaking |
| DILR Percentile | Comparative DILR standing | Key differentiator at top IIMs |
| QA Scaled Score | Section-specific scaled score | Used in composite and tie-breaking |
| QA Percentile | Comparative QA standing | Compared against IIM sectional cutoffs |
| Total Scaled Score | Aggregate scaled score across sections | Primary score for percentile calculation |
| Overall Percentile | Final composite percentile | Primary input into every IIM shortlisting formula |
There is no All India Rank (AIR) on the CAT scorecard. Unlike NEET (which shows AIR directly) or JEE Main (which shows AIR after Session 2), CAT shows only percentile. IIMs do not use AIR; they use sectional and overall percentile scores in their own shortlisting formulas.
Many candidates confuse these three numbers. Here is a precise explanation.
Raw Score: The marks calculated directly from the final answer key. (+3 per correct MCQ/TITA) minus (-1 per wrong MCQ). This is not shown on the CAT scorecard.
Scaled Score: The IIM converts raw scores across all three slots using a statistical equating process to account for difficulty variation. A candidate in a harder slot with a lower raw score may receive the same scaled score as a candidate in an easier slot with a higher raw score, if their relative performance within the slot is equivalent.
Percentile: The percentage of candidates across all slots who scored equal to or below a given candidate's scaled score. A 99.5 percentile means 99.5 percent of all candidates scored below or equal to that candidate.
Example from CAT 2025:
Both receive identical scaled scores and percentiles despite different raw scores, because Candidate A's raw score in the harder slot reflects equivalent relative performance to Candidate B's score in the easier slot.
This is why the conducting IIM insists that no slot is advantageous or disadvantageous: the scaling process accounts for difficulty differences.
Before the final result, IIM releases a provisional answer key and the candidate's response sheet (showing which option each candidate selected for each question). This allows candidates to compare their responses against the provisional key and challenge any answer they believe is incorrect.
| Step Details | |
| Response sheet release | Within 3 to 5 days of exam (December 2 to 3, 2025 for CAT 2025) |
| Provisional answer key release | Within 4 to 7 days of exam |
| Challenge window | 2 to 3 days after provisional key release |
| Challenge fee | Rs. 1,200 per question challenged (non-refundable if rejected) |
| How to challenge | Log in at iimcat.ac.in; select the question; provide reason and reference material |
| Expert review | Panel of subject matter experts reviews each valid challenge |
| Refund if accepted | Challenge fee is refunded for accepted challenges |
| Final answer key and result | Released simultaneously approximately 21 days after exam |
Should you challenge? Challenge only if you have a specific, evidence-backed reason. General disagreement with an option does not constitute a valid challenge. Successful challenges can significantly impact your score at the margins of 99 percentile where every mark counts.
Most candidates focus on overall percentile but underestimate sectional percentile importance. Every IIM applies independent sectional cutoffs for shortlisting.
Example: A candidate scores 99.8 overall percentile but 72 percentile in VARC.
Another candidate scores 99.3 overall with 88 VARC, 86 DILR, and 92 QA percentile.
This scenario is not hypothetical. It occurs every year. Engineering graduates who neglect VARC in favour of QA-heavy preparation frequently achieve high overall percentiles but fail sectional cutoffs at top IIMs.
The strategic conclusion: Prepare all three sections with the specific IIM you are targeting in mind. If targeting IIM Ahmedabad, you must score 85+ in VARC, 85+ in DILR, and 80+ in QA, not just 99+ overall.
Day 1: Download and save the scorecard. Take 5 to 6 printouts. Note your sectional percentiles and overall percentile carefully.
Day 1 to 2: Compare your sectional and overall percentile against the IIM shortlisting thresholds on the CAT Cutoff page. Identify which IIMs and B-schools you realistically qualify for shortlisting consideration.
Day 3 to 5: Begin preparing your profile document for IIM applications: academic transcripts from Class 10, 12, and graduation; work experience letters or appointment and relieving letters; category certificates; extracurricular and achievement records.
Day 5 to 7: Begin WAT (Written Ability Test) preparation. WAT requires clear, structured written communication on a topic of current relevance. Start reading The Hindu editorial, Economic Times opinion pieces, and Harvard Business Review articles daily to build topic awareness and structured thinking.
IIMs release their shortlists in January 2027. The shortlisting timeline varies by IIM:
| IIM Typical Shortlist Release Timeline | |
| IIM Ahmedabad | January (second or third week) |
| IIM Bangalore | January (second or third week) |
| IIM Calcutta | January (second or third week) |
| IIM Lucknow | January (third or fourth week) |
| IIM Kozhikode | January (third or fourth week) |
| IIM Indore | January (third or fourth week) |
| New IIMs (CAP) | February (first or second week) |
Once shortlisted, you will receive an email from the IIM with the WAT-PI date, venue, and document requirements. Respond immediately to confirm your slot.
The WAT-PI (Written Ability Test and Personal Interview) round is where CAT percentile converts into an admission offer, or does not. For top IIMs (A, B, C), the WAT-PI performance contributes 30 to 40 percent of the final composite score, making it as important as the CAT score itself.
WAT Preparation: Practice writing 300 to 400 word essays on current affairs topics in 20 minutes. Topics include economic policy, technology and society, environment and sustainability, business ethics, leadership, and governance. Practice structured essays: introduction, 2 to 3 body paragraphs with supporting points, and a conclusion.
PI Preparation: Prepare your introduction (2 minutes), know your resume thoroughly, be ready to discuss your graduation subjects in depth (IIM interviewers regularly go into technical details of the candidate's academic background), prepare 2 to 3 leadership or problem-solving stories, and stay updated on current business and economic news for the 3 to 4 months leading up to PI.
The CAT 2026 score is valid for one year only. It can be used for admissions to the 2027-29 batch programmes only. It cannot be used for 2028-30 batch applications.
Candidates who are not satisfied with their CAT 2026 percentile or who do not receive calls from their target IIMs have the following options:

Q1. When will the CAT 2026 result be declared? The CAT 2025 result was declared on December 24, 2025. Following the same timeline, the CAT 2026 result is expected between December 20 and 24, 2026.
Q2. Is there an All India Rank in CAT? No. The CAT scorecard shows only scaled scores and percentiles (sectional and overall). There is no All India Rank. IIMs use percentile directly in their shortlisting formulas.
Q3. How many candidates scored 100 percentile in CAT 2025? 12 candidates achieved 100 percentile in CAT 2025 (conducted by IIM Kozhikode on November 30, 2025). 26 candidates achieved 99.99 percentile.
Q4. What raw score is needed for 99 percentile in CAT 2026? Based on CAT 2025 data, approximately 100 to 115 scaled score corresponds to 99 percentile in a moderate-difficulty paper. As per expert analysis from CAT 2025, 122 scaled score converted to 99.99 percentile.
Q5. How long is the CAT 2026 score valid? CAT scores are valid for one year only. The CAT 2026 score is valid for admissions to the 2027-29 academic batch only.
Q6. Can I challenge answers in the CAT answer key? Yes. After the provisional answer key is released (within 4 to 7 days of the exam), candidates can challenge answers through the official portal. The challenge fee was Rs. 1,200 per question in recent years. Accepted challenges result in fee refund and score revision.
Q7. When do IIMs release their shortlists after CAT result? Old IIMs (IIMA, IIMB, IIMC, IIML, IIMK, IIMI) typically release shortlists in January 2027, within 3 to 5 weeks of the December result. New IIMs release shortlists in February 2027 through the Common Admission Process (CAP).
Q8. My sectional percentile in VARC is 78 but overall is 99. Will I get an IIM call? For IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore (both requiring 85+ VARC), you would not be shortlisted despite the 99 overall. You may be shortlisted at IIMs with lower sectional cutoffs (IIM Shillong and below at 70 to 75+ VARC) and at some non-IIM B-schools.
