The CAT cutoff is fundamentally different from the qualifying cutoffs in NEET or JEE Main. There is no single NTA-released cutoff number. Instead, each of the 22 IIMs and over 1,200 participating B-schools independently sets its own minimum percentile threshold, applies that to its own shortlisting formula, and releases its own shortlist. A candidate with a 98 percentile may receive a call from IIM Lucknow but not from IIM Bangalore. A 96 percentile candidate may receive calls from 6 newer IIMs. A 99.5 percentile candidate may or may not receive a call from IIM Ahmedabad depending on their sectional percentiles and academic profile.
This page provides the complete, authenticated CAT cutoff landscape: the distinction between qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff, IIM-wise shortlisting percentile thresholds, sectional cutoff requirements, year-wise percentile trend data from 2022 to 2025, the CAT 2025 score vs percentile data, expected CAT 2026 cutoffs, composite score formulas for major IIMs, and the realistic admission percentile for different tiers of B-schools.

| Type Description Released By When | |||
| Shortlisting Cutoff (for WAT-PI) | Minimum percentile to be shortlisted for the WAT/Personal Interview round | Each IIM independently | January after the exam |
| Admission Cutoff (Final Composite Score) | Minimum composite score at which a candidate was actually admitted after WAT-PI | Each IIM after final merit list | April to May |
Critical reality: The shortlisting cutoff (percentile) and the admission cutoff (composite score) are not the same number. Being shortlisted at 99 percentile for IIM Ahmedabad does not guarantee admission. IIM Ahmedabad's final composite score includes WAT-PI performance, academic profile, work experience, and diversity factors. A candidate shortlisted at 99.2 percentile with poor WAT-PI performance may be rejected while a 98.8 percentile candidate with an outstanding interview gets the offer.
Also, sectional cutoffs apply independently. A 99.8 overall percentile with a 65 VARC percentile will not be shortlisted at IIM Ahmedabad, which requires 85+ sectional percentile in each section.
These are the minimum percentile thresholds below which a General category candidate will typically not be shortlisted for the WAT-PI round. Based on 2022 to 2025 published IIM shortlisting data.
| IIM Overall Percentile VARC Sectional DILR Sectional QA Sectional | ||||
| IIM Ahmedabad (IIMA) | 99+ (typically 99.5+) | 85+ | 85+ | 80+ |
| IIM Bangalore (IIMB) | 99+ (typically 99+) | 85+ | 80+ | 80+ |
| IIM Calcutta (IIMC) | 99+ (typically 99+) | 80+ | 80+ | 80+ |
| IIM Lucknow (IIML) | 97+ (typically 97 to 98) | 85+ | 80+ | 80+ |
| IIM Kozhikode (IIMK) | 96+ | 80+ | 75+ | 75+ |
| IIM Indore (IIMI) | 95+ | 80+ | 75+ | 75+ |
IIM Ahmedabad Note: IIMA's shortlisting is among the most stringent. For the 2026-28 batch, IIMA applies a composite score formula that weights: CAT score (33%), Class 10 marks, Class 12 marks, graduation marks, gender diversity, and work experience. Even 99.9 percentile candidates may not receive an IIMA call if their academic profile (Class 10, 12, graduation) is inconsistent or below IIMA's benchmarks.
IIM Bangalore Note: IIMB places high emphasis on academic excellence. Candidates with a strong academic profile (high Class 10, 12, and graduation marks) receive additional composite score points even at comparable CAT percentiles.
11 newer IIMs (IIM Shillong, IIM Ranchi, IIM Raipur, IIM Trichy, IIM Udaipur, IIM Kashipur, IIM Rohtak, IIM Nagpur, IIM Sambalpur, IIM Bodhgaya, IIM Sirmaur) participate in the Common Admission Process (CAP), where shortlisting and interviews are conducted jointly.
| Tier Typical IIMs Overall Percentile Sectional Percentile | |||
| Tier 1 New IIM | IIM Shillong, IIM Ranchi, IIM Raipur, IIM Trichy, IIM Udaipur | 90 to 93 | 75+ |
| Tier 2 New IIM | IIM Kashipur, IIM Rohtak, IIM Nagpur | 88 to 90 | 70+ |
| Tier 3 New IIM | IIM Sambalpur, IIM Bodhgaya, IIM Sirmaur, IIM Visakhapatnam | 85 to 88 | 65+ |
Non-IIM institutions that accept CAT scores have their own cutoff percentiles. These are typically lower than Old IIM cutoffs but significantly higher than New IIM cutoffs for the premier ones.
| Institution Minimum CAT Percentile (General) Key Differentiator | ||
| FMS Delhi (Faculty of Management Studies) | 98+ | Extremely low fees (Rs. 1.92 lakh for full MBA); high competition |
| MDI Gurgaon | 95 to 97 | Strong corporate connections; Gurgaon campus advantage |
| IIFT Delhi | 95 to 97 (or IIFT exam) | International trade focus; also has separate IIFT exam |
| SPJIMR Mumbai | 85 to 90 (profile matters more) | Strong social impact focus; profile-heavy selection |
| IIT Bombay SJMSOM | 98+ | Engineering-IIT brand; limited seats |
| IIT Delhi DMS | 97+ | IIT brand; proximity to Delhi corporate market |
| IIT Kharagpur VGSOM | 95 to 97 | Oldest IIT; strong alumni network |
| TAPMI Manipal | 85 to 90 | Bank and BFSI focus |
| Great Lakes Chennai/Gurgaon | 80 to 85 | PGDM only; industry-oriented |
FMS Delhi Note: The CAT cut off percentile for MDI Gurgaon ranges between 97 to 99 percentile. FMS Delhi, with fees under Rs. 2 lakh for its 2-year MBA programme, draws candidates with very high percentiles because of its value proposition. Competition for FMS is comparable to Old IIM shortlisting.
Every IIM applies sectional cutoffs independently from the overall percentile. A candidate who does not cross the sectional minimum in any one section is rejected regardless of their overall score.
IIMs want candidates who are competent across all three domains: verbal ability (VARC), analytical reasoning (DILR), and quantitative ability (QA). A candidate who scores 99.9 percentile overall by acing QA and DILR while completely ignoring VARC may not be a suitable fit for a management programme that requires strong communication skills alongside analytical aptitude.
| IIM Tier VARC Minimum DILR Minimum QA Minimum | |||
| IIMA, IIMB | 85 percentile | 85 percentile | 80 percentile |
| IIMC, IIML | 80 percentile | 80 percentile | 80 percentile |
| IIMK, IIMI | 75 to 80 percentile | 75 to 80 percentile | 75 to 80 percentile |
| New IIMs (Tier 1) | 70 to 75 percentile | 70 to 75 percentile | 70 to 75 percentile |
| New IIMs (Tier 2 and 3) | 60 to 70 percentile | 60 to 70 percentile | 60 to 70 percentile |
The DILR trap: DILR has been the toughest section since 2020. Many students struggled to find even one fully solvable set. Candidates who rely on VARC and QA to compensate for DILR consistently fall below sectional cutoffs at top IIMs. The DILR minimum percentile at IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore (85th percentile) requires a consistently solid DILR performance that cannot be achieved without dedicated daily set practice.
The CAT Score vs Percentile data of 2025 shows that the top percentile has slightly increased in 2025, indicating exam difficulty is tough, requiring 118 to 136 to secure a 99.9+ percentile. 90 percentile required 52 to 61 marks.
As per experts, 122 score will convert into 99.99 percentile.
| Raw Score (out of 204) Approximate Percentile Realistic IIM Options | ||
| 135 to 145+ | 99.9 to 100 | IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta |
| 120 to 135 | 99.5 to 99.9 | Old IIMs (BLACKI), FMS, IIT B SJMSOM |
| 105 to 120 | 99.0 to 99.5 | IIM Lucknow, IIM Indore, FMS, MDI |
| 90 to 105 | 97.5 to 99.0 | IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore, MDI, IIT Delhi |
| 75 to 90 | 95.0 to 97.5 | New IIMs (Tier 1), SPJIMR, Great Lakes |
| 60 to 75 | 90.0 to 95.0 | New IIMs (Tier 2 and 3), TAPMI |
| 52 to 61 | 90.0 percentile approx. | New IIMs (Tier 3), second-tier B-schools |
| 40 to 52 | 85.0 to 90.0 | Second-tier B-schools |
| Below 40 | Below 85 | Limited B-school options |
These ranges are based on CAT 2025 (November 30, 2025, IIM Kozhikode). CAT 2025 was moderately difficult with variation in difficulty across slots. VARC had readable but lengthy passages, DILR continued to be the most decisive section, and QA varied noticeably across slots.
| Year IIM A Shortlisting Cutoff (Overall, General) Approximate Marks Required | ||
| CAT 2022 | 99+ percentile | 90+ out of 204 |
| CAT 2023 | 99+ percentile | 92+ out of 204 |
| CAT 2024 | 99+ percentile | 95+ out of 204 |
| CAT 2025 | 99+ percentile (estimated 99.5+ typically receive calls) | 118 to 135+ |
| CAT 2026 (Expected) | 99+ percentile | 115 to 135+ depending on difficulty |
IIM Ahmedabad's shortlisting cutoff has remained at 99+ percentile consistently since 2019. The actual marks required fluctuate based on paper difficulty (easier paper requires higher marks for same percentile).
Reserved category candidates (NC-OBC, SC, ST, EWS) have lower minimum percentile thresholds at IIMs.
| Category Approximate Minimum Overall Percentile Sectional Minimum | ||
| General / UR | 99+ | 85+ each section |
| NC-OBC | 97 to 98 | 75 to 80+ |
| EWS | 97 to 98 | 75 to 80+ |
| SC | 85 to 90 | 60 to 70+ |
| ST | 70 to 80 | 50 to 60+ |
| PwD | 60 to 70 | 45 to 55+ |
As per the reserved categories, EWS candidates require 90 to 95 for older IIMs and 75 to 85 for newer ones, whereas OBC candidates need 85 to 90 and 70 to 80, respectively.
| Category Overall Percentile VARC DILR QA | ||||
| General | 99+ | 80+ | 80+ | 80+ |
| NC-OBC | 90+ | 75+ | 70+ | 70+ |
| EWS | 90+ | 75+ | 70+ | 70+ |
| SC | 70+ | 50+ | 50+ | 50+ |
| ST | 55+ | 40+ | 40+ | 40+ |
| PwD | 50+ | 40+ | 40+ | 40+ |
The CAT percentile is only one input into IIM shortlisting and admission. Each IIM publicly releases its shortlisting formula. Understanding this formula helps candidates calculate their realistic chances beyond just the CAT score.
| Component Maximum Points | |
| CAT Score | 30 |
| Class 10 Percentage | 10 |
| Class 12 Percentage | 10 |
| Graduation Percentage | 10 |
| Gender Diversity | 2 |
| Work Experience | 8 |
| WAT and PI | 30 |
| Total | 100 |
A candidate with 99 percentile in CAT but 55% in Class 12 will score lower than a candidate with 97 percentile but 90% in Class 12, even before WAT-PI.
IIMB publishes a detailed scoring table where:
The CAT 2026 paper will be conducted on November 29, 2026. The QA section remained consistent across slots and was slightly more challenging than CAT 2024 in 2025. Based on difficulty expectations:
If CAT 2026 is similar to CAT 2025 (moderate difficulty):
If CAT 2026 is easier than 2025 (like CAT 2023):
| Target IIMs Required CAT Percentile Required Raw Score (Moderate Paper) Key Focus | |||
| IIM A, B, C | 99.5+ | 128+ | Consistent performance across all 3 sections; no weak section |
| IIM L, K, I | 97 to 99 | 108 to 128 | Strong VARC; solid DILR set selection; QA accuracy |
| New IIMs (Tier 1) | 93 to 97 | 85 to 108 | Balanced preparation; avoid very low sectional |
| FMS Delhi | 98+ | 112+ | Very high VARC and DILR percentile; QA decent |
| MDI Gurgaon | 95 to 97 | 92 to 108 | Profile-based advantage possible |
| Second-Tier B-Schools | 85 to 93 | 65 to 85 | Good overall; avoid complete section neglect |
Use the CAT Complete Test Series 2027 to track your mock performance against these targets across multiple full-length tests.
Q1. What is the CAT cutoff for IIM Ahmedabad in 2026? IIM Ahmedabad typically shortlists candidates above 99 percentile overall with 85+ sectional percentile in each section. Based on the consistent trend from 2022 to 2025, the 2026 shortlisting cutoff is expected at 99+ for General category.
Q2. Can I get an IIM call with 95 percentile? Yes. Several IIMs shortlist at 95 to 97 percentile: IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore, and most newer IIMs. Non-IIM institutions like MDI Gurgaon also shortlist at this range. IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta require 99+.
Q3. Is there a combined cutoff for all IIMs? No. Each IIM independently sets its cutoff. There is no single "IIM cutoff" or centralised CAT qualifying cutoff like NEET or JEE Main.
Q4. What is the sectional cutoff at IIM Bangalore? IIM Bangalore typically requires 85+ percentile in VARC, 80+ in DILR, and 80+ in QA for General category. Meeting overall percentile without crossing sectional minimums results in rejection.
Q5. What marks do I need for 99 percentile in CAT 2026? Based on CAT 2025 data, approximately 100 to 115 raw score (out of 204) corresponds to 99 percentile in a moderate-difficulty paper. This varies based on paper difficulty. A tougher paper requires fewer marks for the same percentile.
Q6. Does the cutoff change every year? The overall cutoff percentile for top IIMs (IIM A, B, C at 99+) has been stable for years. However, the actual raw marks required for that percentile change every year based on paper difficulty.
