Q19. Is the CAT application fee refundable? No. The application fee is completely non-refundable under all circumstances.
Q20. Can I change my exam slot after registration? No. Your slot (Slot 1, 2, or 3) is assigned by the convening IIM based on your test city and registration. It cannot be changed after admit card release.
Q21. What can I change in the CAT correction window? The correction window (open 3 to 5 days after registration closes) allows changes to photograph, signature, and test city preferences only. Academic details, category, and personal information cannot be changed.
Q22. I forgot my CAT User ID. How do I recover it? Use the "Forgot User ID" option on the iimcat.ac.in login page and enter your registered email ID to retrieve it.
Q23. How many questions are in CAT 2026? 68 questions: VARC 24 questions, DILR 22 questions, QA 22 questions.
Q24. What is the total marks in CAT 2026? 204 marks (68 questions × 3 marks each for correct answers).
Q25. What is the time limit in CAT? 120 minutes total, strictly divided into 40 minutes per section. PwD candidates receive 160 minutes (53 minutes 20 seconds per section).
Q26. Can I switch between sections freely in CAT? No. You can navigate freely within the active section but cannot move to the next section before the timer expires and cannot return to a completed section.
Q27. What is a TITA question in CAT? TITA stands for Type In The Answer. These are non-MCQ questions requiring you to type a numerical answer. They carry +3 for correct responses and 0 for wrong responses (no negative marking). Always attempt every TITA question.
Q28. Is there negative marking for TITA questions? No. TITA questions carry zero penalty for wrong answers. Only MCQ wrong answers cost -1 mark.
Q29. Is a calculator provided in CAT? Yes. A basic on-screen calculator is available within the CBT interface for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and square root. No scientific functions are available.
Q30. What is the marking scheme for CAT MCQs? +3 for correct answer, -1 for wrong answer, 0 for unattempted. Marking more than one option is treated as wrong (-1).
Q31. How many questions should I attempt in CAT for a good percentile? Based on CAT 2025 data, 41 to 48 good attempts (correct responses) across all three sections was required for the 99th percentile. Quality matters more than quantity: 40 correct is better than 55 attempted with 15 wrong (net: 55 × 3 - 15 = 150 vs 40 × 3 = 120 — actually 40 correct gives 120 but 55 attempts with 40 correct gives 40×3 - 15×1 = 120 - 15 = 105). Accuracy determines everything.
Q32. Are all questions in CAT compulsory? Yes. Unlike NEET (which has optional Section B questions), all 68 CAT questions are available to attempt; none are mandatory but none are optional either. You choose which to attempt and which to skip.
Q33. What is the VARC section in CAT? VARC (Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension) has 24 questions in 40 minutes. It contains 4 to 5 RC passages (16 to 18 questions) and 6 to 8 VA questions (Para Jumbles, Para Summary, Odd Sentence Out, Para Completion).
Q34. Are VA questions in CAT MCQ or TITA? VA questions in CAT are predominantly TITA-type (no negative marking). In CAT 2025, 4 TITA questions were in VARC per slot. Always attempt all VA questions since wrong TITA responses are free.
Q35. Do I need to prepare vocabulary for CAT VARC? Reading quality long-form content is more effective than memorising word lists. Vocabulary knowledge from contextual reading helps in RC option analysis. Direct vocabulary-definition questions are rare in CAT.
Q36. What domains do CAT RC passages cover? Economics, philosophy, science, sociology, technology, history, culture, and environment. CAT 2025 passages included topics like AI/ChatGPT, astronomy, electric music, consumer behaviour, and economics. Passages are deliberately unfamiliar; familiarity with academic reading styles across diverse domains is what helps.
Q37. What is the DILR section in CAT? DILR (Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning) has 22 questions in 40 minutes, organised as 4 to 5 sets of 4 to 6 questions each. All questions are set-based; no standalone DILR questions exist.
Q38. Why is DILR considered the toughest section? DILR has been the toughest section since 2020. Set difficulty is unpredictable, time pressure is high, and the variable DI/LR set distribution (since CAT 2025) means candidates cannot rely on a fixed approach. Many students struggle to find even one fully solvable set in difficult slots.
Q39. How many DILR sets should I attempt in 40 minutes? Attempt 2 to 3 complete sets with high accuracy. Attempting all 5 sets partially consistently underperforms compared to completing 2 to 3 sets accurately. Use the first 7 to 8 minutes to scan all sets and identify the most solvable ones.
Q40. What types of DILR sets appear in CAT? Arrangements (linear/circular), Scheduling, Games and Tournaments, Venn Diagrams, Tables and Matrix, Bar Charts, Line Graphs, Caselets, Network/Route-based problems, and Quant-LR Hybrids. For full details, see the CAT Syllabus page.
Q41. What topics are covered in CAT QA? QA covers Arithmetic (35 to 40% weight), Algebra (20 to 25%), Geometry (15 to 20%), Number Theory (10 to 15%), and Modern Math/Probability (10 to 15%). No topic beyond Class 10 to 12 level mathematics is tested.
Q42. Do I need advanced mathematics for CAT QA? No. CAT QA is based on Class 9 to 12 level mathematics. No university-level or advanced mathematics is required. The challenge is speed and accuracy at this level, not conceptual difficulty.
Q43. Which QA topic has the highest weightage in CAT? Arithmetic consistently has the highest weightage (7 to 9 questions per paper). Key Arithmetic topics: Percentages, Ratios, Time-Speed-Distance, Time and Work, Profit and Loss.
Q44. Should I attempt all QA questions in CAT? No. Attempt questions you are confident about or can eliminate 2 options for. Random guessing on MCQ QA questions costs -1 per wrong attempt. However, always attempt TITA QA questions (no negative marking).
Q45. What percentile do I need for IIM Ahmedabad? IIM Ahmedabad typically shortlists General category candidates with 99+ overall percentile and 85+ sectional percentile in each section (VARC, DILR, QA). Both conditions must be met simultaneously.
Q46. Can I get an IIM call with 95 percentile? Yes. IIM Kozhikode and IIM Indore shortlist at 95 to 96 percentile. Multiple newer IIMs shortlist at 88 to 93 percentile. Non-IIM institutions like MDI Gurgaon also shortlist at 95+ percentile.
Q47. Is CAT cutoff the same every year? The overall cutoff percentile threshold for top IIMs remains stable (IIM A/B/C at 99+) across years. The actual marks required for that percentile change based on paper difficulty.
Q48. What is the difference between qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff? The qualifying cutoff is the minimum percentile for WAT-PI shortlisting. The admission cutoff is the final composite score threshold at which candidates are offered admission after WAT-PI. Being shortlisted does not guarantee admission.
Q49. How does work experience affect IIM selection? Work experience is given explicit weightage in IIM composite scores (typically 8 to 15 out of 100 points). Candidates with 12 to 36 months of relevant full-time post-graduation work experience consistently score higher in final composite scores. However, exceptional fresh graduates are regularly admitted to all IIMs.
Q50. What is WAT-PI in IIM admission? WAT (Written Ability Test) is a 20 to 30 minute essay writing exercise on a given topic. PI (Personal Interview) is a 15 to 30 minute interview assessing personality, academic depth, awareness, and motivation. Together, WAT-PI typically contributes 30 to 40 percent of the final composite score at top IIMs.
Q51. Are there sectional cutoffs at all IIMs? Yes. Every IIM applies independent minimum sectional percentile thresholds for VARC, DILR, and QA. Failing to meet any one sectional minimum results in non-shortlisting regardless of overall percentile.
Q52. Can I get an IIM seat with a 90 percentile? At 90 percentile, you may receive calls from newer IIMs (IIM Sambalpur, IIM Bodhgaya, IIM Sirmaur) and several non-IIM B-schools. The probability of receiving calls from Old IIMs (A, B, C, L, K, I) at 90 percentile is very low. Reserved category candidates (SC/ST) may receive calls from more IIMs at this percentile due to lower sectional cutoffs.
Q53. When is the CAT 2026 result expected? Based on CAT 2025 result date (December 24, 2025), the CAT 2026 result is expected between December 20 and 24, 2026.
Q54. How do I download my CAT scorecard? Log in at iimcat.ac.in with your CAT User ID and Password after result declaration. The scorecard appears on your dashboard. Download as PDF and take multiple printouts.
Q55. Is there an All India Rank in CAT? No. The CAT scorecard shows sectional scaled scores, sectional percentiles, and overall percentile only. There is no All India Rank.
Q56. How long is the CAT score valid? One year only. The CAT 2026 score is valid for admissions to the 2027-29 academic batch only. It cannot be used in subsequent years.
Q57. How many candidates scored 100 percentile in CAT 2025? 12 candidates scored 100 percentile in CAT 2025 (conducted by IIM Kozhikode, November 30, 2025). 26 candidates scored 99.99 percentile.
Q58. Can I challenge the CAT answer key? Yes. After the provisional answer key is released (within 4 to 7 days of the exam), candidates can challenge specific answers through iimcat.ac.in. The challenge fee was Rs. 1,200 per question in recent years.
Q59. How many months of preparation does CAT require? Most successful candidates (99+ percentile) prepare for 6 to 12 months. Candidates with strong quantitative backgrounds (engineers) may need 4 to 6 months for QA but often require more for VARC. Arts/Commerce graduates may need more QA preparation time but often have stronger VARC bases.
Q60. Which section is the most difficult to improve? VARC is the hardest to improve rapidly because it requires building reading comprehension depth over months. QA and DILR can show improvement with focused practice within 3 to 4 months. Begin VARC preparation earliest.
Q61. How many mock tests should I take before CAT 2026? Take at least 20 to 25 full-length mocks under real exam conditions (40-minute locked sectional timer, 120-minute total). Additionally, take 10 to 15 section-specific timed tests per section. Access the CAT Complete Test Series 2027 for comprehensive mock practice.
Q62. Is coaching necessary for CAT? No. Many 99+ percentile scorers are self-prepared. However, structured coaching provides ready-made timetables, doubt resolution, peer competition, and regular mock tests. The deciding factor is discipline and consistent practice, not the coaching institute.
Q63. What is the ideal order to attempt sections in CAT? CAT section order is fixed: VARC first, DILR second, QA third. You cannot change this order. Within each section, start by scanning all questions and attempting the easiest ones first.
Q64. How important are previous year CAT papers? Extremely important. Unlike NEET or JEE, IIMs do not publish official previous year papers. However, memory-based reconstructions of all CAT papers from 2017 to 2025 are widely available and are the most authentic preparation material. Solving 5 to 7 years of previous papers in timed conditions is essential.
Q65. What happens after receiving an IIM WAT-PI call? After receiving a shortlist email, you select a WAT-PI date and venue from available options. You attend the WAT (written essay) and PI (personal interview) at the IIM or a designated centre. Documents are verified at the same time.
Q66. Can I appear for WAT-PI at multiple IIMs simultaneously? Yes. If shortlisted by multiple IIMs, you attend WAT-PI at each separately. They are scheduled at different times (January to March 2027) and do not overlap typically.
Q67. Can I negotiate my WAT-PI date at an IIM? Most IIMs offer limited flexibility on dates. Request changes through the IIM's official admissions portal immediately after shortlist announcement. Changes are at the IIM's discretion.
Q68. What documents do I need for IIM WAT-PI? Typically: CAT 2026 scorecard, Class 10 marksheet and certificate, Class 12 marksheet and certificate, graduation marksheet and certificate (or current transcript if final year), work experience letters (appointment and relieving), category certificate (if applicable), Aadhaar card, and passport-size photographs. Each IIM specifies its own document list in the shortlist email.
