The CAT notification is the document that officially begins India's most competitive management entrance examination cycle. Every year, over 3 lakh MBA aspirants wait for this single announcement to confirm the exam date, open registration, and set the entire preparation and application timeline in motion. Missing a deadline in the notification cycle, whether registration, admit card, or answer key objection, can cost a candidate an entire year.
CAT 2026 is expected to be conducted by IIM Indore on November 29, 2026. The official notification is expected to be released on July 26, 2026 (last Sunday of July), as per the consistent pattern followed by the convening IIM every year. Every candidate must download and read the complete Information Bulletin before filling the application form. The notification bulletin is not a summary, it is the governing document, and every detail it contains supersedes anything published elsewhere.

While much of the CAT 2026 structure is predictable from historical data, the official notification will confirm several details that cannot be assumed in advance.
The notification will officially confirm which IIM is conducting CAT 2026. IIM Indore is widely expected based on the rotation pattern, but this is officially announced only in the notification.
The exact exam date for CAT 2026 will be confirmed. November 29, 2026 (last Sunday of November) is the expected date. If IIM Indore deviates from the pattern, the notification will state the correct date.
In 2020, the number of questions was reduced from 100 to 76 due to COVID-related constraints. In 2021, it was further revised to 66. Since 2022, it has stabilised at 66 to 68. If IIM Indore introduces any changes in 2026, such as the number of questions, section weights, or TITA proportion, it will be stated in the bulletin.
The fee for CAT 2026 will be confirmed. CAT 2025 fee was Rs. 2,600 for General/EWS/NC-OBC and Rs. 1,300 for SC/ST/PwD. Any revision will appear in the notification.
The list of test cities for CAT 2026 will be published. CAT 2025 was conducted in approximately 170 cities. New cities may be added and old ones may be removed based on infrastructure and candidate demand.
The list of IIM programmes and other B-schools that accept CAT 2026 scores, with their respective additional application fees, will be published.
When the notification is released on July 26, 2026, follow these steps:
Step 1: Visit iimcat.ac.in (the only official CAT portal).
Step 2: Look for the "CAT 2026 Information Bulletin" or "Notification" link on the homepage. It will be prominently displayed.
Step 3: Click the link. The PDF will open in a new tab or download automatically.
Step 4: Save the PDF on multiple devices. Do not share unofficial third-party summaries as your primary reference.
Step 5: Read the bulletin from start to finish before beginning registration.
When the CAT 2026 bulletin drops, read these sections in priority order before filling the form.
Note the registration opening date, registration closing date, correction window, admit card date, and exam date. Set calendar reminders at least 5 days before each deadline. CAT 2026 registration is expected to close September 20, 2026; a candidate who starts filling the form on September 20 risks technical issues derailing their application.
Confirm that you meet the degree and minimum marks requirements. Check the updated list of recognised universities and whether your institution qualifies. Verify the category you fall under (General/EWS/NC-OBC/SC/ST/PwD) and confirm that the supporting certificate is valid and current.
Visit the CAT Eligibility Criteria page for a detailed breakdown.
Confirm the number of questions (expected 68), section-wise split (VARC 24, DILR 22, QA 22), total marks (204), time per section (40 minutes), and marking scheme (+3 correct MCQ, -1 wrong MCQ, 0 TITA). Any change from this expected pattern requires an immediate adjustment of preparation strategy.
Visit the CAT Exam Info page for a complete pattern breakdown.
The notification lists all IIM programmes and other participating B-schools that can be selected during registration. Identify in advance which programmes you wish to apply to. This saves time during the registration window and ensures you do not miss applying to an institute by oversight.
Confirm the fee for your category and ensure your payment method is functional. CAT fees are paid online only; cash and demand drafts are not accepted.
CAT's notification process differs significantly from NEET, JEE Main, and other government entrance exams.

The notification opens in July 2026. Between now and then, candidates have approximately 10 weeks of undisturbed preparation time before the exam cycle begins administratively. This window is the most valuable preparation resource available.
VARC is the section that cannot be improved through cramming. It requires sustained reading exposure over months. Begin now by reading one analytical article of 800 to 1,200 words daily from The Economist, HBR, The Hindu's editorial, or similar quality sources. Practise summarising each article in 3 sentences. By July 26 (notification date), you will have built 10 weeks of reading habit that will compound throughout the preparation cycle.
DILR performance depends on exposure to diverse set types. Begin solving 2 to 3 DILR sets daily from CAT papers or coaching material. Focus on set identification speed: can you recognise within 90 seconds what type of set it is and whether it is approachable? This skill is built only through volume.
If your quantitative fundamentals are weak, begin now with Percentages, Ratios, and Proportions. These 2 to 3 topic areas alone form the backbone of 35 to 40 percent of CAT QA. Use the CAT Syllabus Tracker to mark topics as you complete them.
Full-length CAT mocks are best started after the notification confirms the exam pattern. In the meantime, take sectional practice tests (40-minute, section-specific) to build comfort with the locked timer format.
For candidates who have appeared in NEET or JEE Main, the CAT notification process works differently in several important ways.
No government body oversight: The IIM CAT notification is released by the convening IIM, a private educational institution, not a government body like NTA. There is no RTI process for CAT. Grievances are handled by the IIM CAT helpdesk.
No re-registration for second session: CAT is a single-session exam per year. There is no Session 1 and Session 2 like JEE Main.
Programme-specific applications at registration: Unlike NEET or JEE (where college applications happen separately through counselling), CAT registration itself includes programme selection. You choose which IIM programmes and B-schools you want your score sent to during the registration process itself.
Limited correction window: The CAT form correction window allows changes to only 3 items: photograph, signature, and test city preferences. Academic details and category selections cannot be changed after submission.
For queries related to registration, application, and payment processing:
Phone: 1-800-210-0175 (Toll Free) Hours: Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (excluding national holidays) Email for registration queries: cathelpdesk@iimcat.co.in Email for academic queries (eligibility, category): Contact the CAT Centre office as listed in the official notification
For queries about specific IIM programmes (WAT-PI, composite score, programme details), contact each IIM's admissions office directly. The CAT helpdesk handles only exam-related queries, not IIM admission queries.
