Every month of preparation, every mock test, every RC article read at 7 AM, every DILR set solved against the clock, leads to a single 120-minute window on one November Sunday. The preparation determines your score. Exam day execution determines whether that score is realised or lost to avoidable errors.
CAT 2026 exam day mistakes are different from JEE Main or NEET mistakes. Unlike pen-and-paper exams, CAT is conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode with a strict 40-minute sectional lock that prevents you from switching sections or returning to a completed section. A candidate who does not know this rule before sitting down at the terminal loses 2 to 5 minutes of productive exam time discovering it during the exam. A candidate who does not arrive by the gate closure time is denied entry with no recourse regardless of the reason.
This page covers every dimension of CAT 2026 exam day: the complete document checklist, slot timings and gate closure rules, what happens from centre arrival to the first question appearing on screen, prohibited items, the CBT interface explained, sectional time management inside the 40-minute locks, dress code guidelines, biometric verification at centres, and the day-before preparation checklist.
All guidance is based on IIM Kozhikode's official CAT 2025 exam day instructions and the consistent pattern across 2022 to 2025. CAT 2026 instructions issued by IIM Indore are expected to be identical.
Important: Always verify exam day instructions from your official admit card, which will be released on November 5, 2026, and from the official Information Bulletin at iimcat.ac.in. Centre-specific instructions take precedence over general guidelines.
Visit the CAT complete guide for the full exam overview, dates, and all resources.
CAT 2026 is conducted across three slots on November 29, 2026 (Sunday). Each candidate is assigned to one slot on their admit card. Slot assignment is non-transferable.
| Slot Exam Timing Gate Closure (No Entry After) Recommended Arrival Reporting Deadline | ||||
| Slot 1 (Morning) | 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM | 8:00 AM | 7:00 AM to 7:30 AM | 7:30 AM |
| Slot 2 (Afternoon) | 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM | 12:00 PM | 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM | 11:30 AM |
| Slot 3 (Evening) | 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM | 4:00 PM | 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM | 3:30 PM |
Gate closure is absolute. Once the gate closes, no candidate is admitted regardless of reason. There is no grace period, no exceptional entry for traffic delays, and no re-scheduling if you miss your slot. Plan to arrive at least 60 to 90 minutes before your exam slot start time.
For Slot 1 candidates: this means leaving home early enough to arrive at the centre by 7:00 to 7:30 AM, accounting for Sunday morning traffic, travel delays, and parking. For candidates staying in a different city: reach the city the previous evening. Do not attempt a same-morning commute from outside the exam city.
Carry all mandatory documents listed below. Missing any single mandatory document results in denial of entry.
| Document Specification | |
| CAT 2026 Admit Card (Printed) | Printed clearly on A4 paper; coloured or black-and-white both accepted; must be legible; do NOT show on mobile screen |
| Valid Photo ID (Original) | Any ONE of: PAN Card, Aadhaar Card, Driving Licence, Voter ID, Passport; must be government-issued and carry a photograph |
| Passport-Size Photographs | 2 recent photographs; must match the photograph uploaded during registration |
| Document Required When | |
| PwD/UDID Certificate | For candidates with PwD status who registered under PwD category and require additional time |
| Scribe Arrangement Letter | If scribe was approved by the conducting IIM |
The admit card will be released on November 5, 2026, at iimcat.ac.in. Before printing, verify:
If any detail is incorrect, contact the CAT helpdesk at cathelpdesk@iimcat.co.in immediately. Corrections discovered on exam day cannot be resolved at the centre.
Print 2 to 3 copies. One copy is typically collected by the invigilator at the centre.

Understanding the complete entry-to-exam sequence prevents anxiety and lost minutes on exam day.
Arrive at the test centre complex. Locate the specific building or block assigned on your admit card. IIM CAT test centres are typically located at established test centre chains (TCS iON, Prometric, or similar) rather than colleges. The building may have a separate entry queue for each slot.
Security personnel at the centre entrance check your admit card and photo ID. This is a preliminary check. Do not show your admit card on a mobile phone. Present the printed copy.
All prohibited items (phone, watch, electronic devices) must be deposited at the designated storage area before proceeding further. Most test centres have lockers or secure storage. Keep your locker key or token safely.
Biometric capture (photograph and fingerprint) is conducted at the second checkpoint. The centre staff will:
If your fingerprint scan fails (common due to dry skin or skin conditions), inform the staff calmly. The staff will follow an alternative verification protocol. This does not affect your ability to appear.
You are directed to your assigned seat. Each candidate has an individually assigned computer terminal. Log in using the credentials displayed on the terminal (your CAT ID or a test centre-specific login provided by the proctor).
After login, verify on screen:
If any mismatch appears, raise your hand immediately before the exam begins. Do not start the exam with a system error.
A tutorial period (typically 15 minutes) runs before the actual 120-minute exam clock begins. During this tutorial:
The 120-minute clock starts. VARC section opens first (40 minutes). You cannot access DILR or QA until the VARC timer completes.
CAT is conducted in a well-developed CBT interface at professional test centres. Knowing the interface before sitting at the terminal saves 5 to 10 minutes of orientation time during the exam.
Question Panel: A panel on the right side of the screen shows all question numbers in the current section with colour-coded status:
Navigation: Within a section, you can move to any question freely. You cannot move to a different section before its timer expires.
Mark for Review: Clicking "Mark for Review" flags a question for revisiting before the section timer ends. A marked question with a response is still evaluated. Only unanswered questions score zero.
Section Timer: A countdown timer showing remaining time for the current section is prominently displayed. When it reaches zero, the section closes automatically and the next section opens.
TITA Questions: Questions requiring a typed numerical answer have a text input box. Use the on-screen keyboard or your physical keyboard to enter the answer. There is a backspace function. Double-check your entry before moving on.
Rough Scratchpad: Physical rough paper is provided at your workstation. You may also use the on-screen rough scratchpad if available. Use whichever you find faster.
Section Switching Rule (Critical): You cannot navigate to a different section until the current section's 40-minute timer expires. This is the most important rule unique to CAT. You can navigate freely within the 24 questions of VARC but you cannot peek at or answer DILR or QA questions until the VARC timer completes.
The 40-minute sectional clock is the defining constraint of CAT. Every strategy must be built around it.
| Time Block Activity | |
| 0 to 2 minutes | Quickly scan all 24 questions; identify which are RC and which are VA |
| 2 to 30 minutes | Attempt RC passages; use active reading (question-directed) approach |
| 30 to 38 minutes | Attempt VA questions; all TITA VA questions should be attempted (no negative marking) |
| 38 to 40 minutes | Review marked RC questions; finalise borderline answers |
RC passage strategy within VARC: Not all RC passages are equally approachable. In the first 2 minutes of VARC, read the first sentence of each passage to gauge complexity. Start with the most familiar domain. Difficult philosophy or literary theory passages should be reserved for after you have secured marks from accessible passages.
| Time Block Activity | |
| 0 to 8 minutes | Scan all 5 sets (approximately 90 seconds per set); rank them by approachability |
| 8 to 25 minutes | Attempt the 2 most approachable sets completely |
| 25 to 37 minutes | Attempt the 3rd best set; complete as many questions as possible |
| 37 to 40 minutes | Attempt isolated questions from remaining sets if any are individually solvable |
Set-selection is the most critical DILR skill. The first 8 minutes are investment time, not wasted time. A candidate who correctly identifies that 2 out of 5 sets are solvable and completes those with full accuracy outperforms a candidate who starts the most complex set and abandons it after 12 minutes.
| Time Block Activity | |
| 0 to 3 minutes | Scan all 22 questions; mark easy, medium, and hard questions |
| 3 to 25 minutes | Attempt easy and medium questions; do not spend more than 3 minutes on any single question |
| 25 to 37 minutes | Attempt harder questions with remaining time |
| 37 to 40 minutes | Review MCQ answers; verify TITA numerical entries |
QA difficulty assessment in first 3 minutes: CAT QA questions are not arranged by difficulty. An easy Arithmetic question may appear at number 18, and a complex Geometry problem at number 3. The first 3 minutes of scanning prevents spending 8 minutes on a hard Geometry problem at the start while missing an easy Arithmetic question at the end.
CAT does not prescribe a formal dress code. However, test centre security protocols include checks for electronic devices, which have practical implications for clothing choices.
| Item Guidance | |
| Comfortable clothing | November in India varies from cold (North India) to warm (South India); dress for the specific city's weather |
| Footwear | Open footwear simplifies security; closed shoes are permitted but may require removal for scan |
| Full-sleeve garments | Permitted; security may check sleeves |
| Accessories | Minimal; avoid metallic jewellery that triggers security equipment |
| Headgear | Generally not permitted; exception for religious headgear with face fully visible |
| Wristwatches | No watch of any type permitted; the CBT interface has a visible timer |
Practical recommendation: Wear comfortable, temperature-appropriate clothing in neutral colours. Avoid heavy accessories. Keep everything minimal to pass through security checks efficiently without delays.
Candidates who registered under PwD category and received approval for additional time or scribe assistance:
| Provision Details | |
| Additional time | 53 minutes 20 seconds per section (160 minutes total) instead of 40 minutes (120 minutes total) |
| Scribe | Must be arranged as approved during registration; scribe must carry valid photo ID |
| Documents required | UDID card, disability certificate, and any IIM-issued approval letter for scribe |
Scribe arrangements that were not pre-approved during registration are not permitted at the centre on exam day.
The evening before CAT 2026 (November 28, 2026) should be entirely logistics-focused. No new topic, no new mock test, no last-minute cramming.
| Task Details | |
| Print admit card | 2 to 3 clear A4 printouts from iimcat.ac.in |
| Locate test centre | Open Google Maps; confirm route, estimated travel time, and parking options |
| Plan departure time | Arrive at centre 90 minutes before slot start; deduct travel time; add 30-minute buffer |
| Government photo ID ready | Place original Aadhaar, PAN, or Passport in a transparent pouch |
| Prepare photographs | 2 passport-size photos matching registration photograph |
| Pack transparent water bottle | Plain water only |
| Light study only | If studying at all, limit to 30 minutes of formula sheet or high-frequency topic review; stop by 7 PM |
| No mock tests | Do not attempt any new mock on the day before the exam |
| Eat properly | Full dinner; healthy breakfast on exam day; avoid heavy meals before Slot 1 |
| Sleep on time | Aim for 7 to 8 hours; set 2 to 3 alarms for morning (Slot 1 candidates) |
| Hotel check-in (outstation) | If appearing outside your home city, check in the evening before |
| Charge devices | Charge your phone fully (keep it at hotel/hostel during exam); no device in centre |
Based on candidate experiences at test centres across 170 cities on November 30, 2025:
The exam was conducted at 339 test centres across 170 cities. Centre conduct was smooth and well-organised, consistent with the TCS iON managed test centre infrastructure used across India.
Biometric queues for Slot 1 were longest between 7:00 and 7:45 AM at larger centres in metro cities. Candidates who arrived by 7:00 AM had no queue pressure. Candidates arriving at 7:45 to 8:00 AM at large centres reported stress from the biometric queue running close to the 8:00 AM gate closure.
The interface was consistent with previous years. The 40-minute sectional lock was confirmed by all candidates. DILR was universally described as the most stressful section in terms of time pressure.
Candidates who benefited most reported three common traits: they had taken 20+ full-length mock tests under real time conditions, they had practiced set-selection strategy in DILR, and they did not panic when DILR sets appeared difficult.
Practice in real exam conditions using the CAT Full Length Mock Series to prepare for these exact conditions.
Q1. Can I show my admit card on a mobile phone at the CAT centre? No. A printed copy of the admit card is mandatory. Mobile phones are prohibited inside the centre complex after the first checkpoint.
Q2. Is there a break between sections in CAT? No. The exam runs continuously: 40 minutes VARC, then 40 minutes DILR, then 40 minutes QA. There is no scheduled break. When one section's timer ends, the next section opens automatically.
Q3. Can I go back to VARC after it has closed? No. Once the 40-minute VARC timer expires, the section locks permanently. You cannot access VARC during DILR or QA time.
Q4. Is a calculator provided during CAT? No. No physical or virtual calculator is provided. All calculations must be done mentally or on the rough scratchpad/paper provided at the centre.
Q5. What if my computer screen freezes during the exam? Raise your hand immediately. Do not try to fix the issue yourself. The proctor will report to the test centre administrator. Lost time due to technical issues at the centre is typically compensated by extending the section timer.
Q6. Can I mark a question for review and still get credit for it? Yes. If you have selected an answer and also marked it for review, the answer is still recorded and evaluated. Marking for review does not override a given answer. Only leave a question unanswered (not attempting it at all) for zero marks.
Q7. What is the slot assignment process? Can I choose my slot? Slot assignment (Slot 1, 2, or 3) is done by the conducting IIM based on registration order and centre availability. Candidates cannot select their slot. The assigned slot is printed on the admit card and is non-transferable.
Q8. What if I arrive late due to traffic and miss the gate closure? Late candidates are denied entry with no exceptions. The gate closure time is absolute. There is no compensatory exam, no re-scheduling, and no refund. Plan to arrive at least 90 minutes before your slot start time to account for all contingencies.
