The IBPS PO eligibility criteria define the minimum requirements a candidate must satisfy before applying for the Probationary Officer recruitment. Verifying eligibility before applying is essential: candidates who apply under incorrect assumptions about age, qualification, or category lose their application fee and may face disqualification during document verification even after qualifying all exam stages.
This page covers the complete official eligibility conditions for IBPS PO 2026 (CRP PO/MT-XVI) based on the criteria established in the IBPS CRP PO/MT-XV notification, which serves as the most recent official reference until the 2026 notification is published.
| Parameter | Requirement |
| Nationality | Indian citizen (or eligible non-citizen per IBPS notification) |
| Minimum Qualification | Graduation in any discipline from a recognised university |
| Minimum Age | 20 years |
| Maximum Age | 30 years (standard) |
| Age Relaxation | Applicable for SC, ST, OBC, PwBD, ESM, and other reserved categories |
| Computer Proficiency | Basic knowledge of computer operations required |
| Local Language | Proficiency may be required by participating bank |
| Number of Attempts | No fixed limit until upper age limit is reached |
Candidates applying for IBPS PO 2026 must satisfy one of the following nationality conditions:
Candidates falling under categories other than Indian citizens must produce a Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Government of India at the time of document verification. Applications without such certificates may be rejected at any stage of the process.
A graduation degree in any discipline from a university or institution recognised by the Government of India is the minimum educational qualification. There is no mandatory stream: candidates from BA, BCom, BSc, B.Tech, B.Pharm, BCA, LLB, B.Arch, BHM, and any other recognised graduation are equally eligible.
IBPS does not prescribe a minimum percentage in graduation for the PO post. Candidates who have passed graduation in any division are eligible.
This is a critical condition that is often misunderstood. As per the IBPS CRP PO/MT-XV notification, the final result of graduation must have been declared on or before the date specified in the notification. For the 2025 cycle, this date was July 21, 2025.
For the 2026 cycle, the equivalent cutoff date will be specified in the official notification expected in June 2026. Candidates in the final semester or year of graduation whose results are not declared by this date are not eligible to apply. This is different from SSC CGL and some state exams that allow final-year applicants.
Candidates holding integrated degrees (such as a 5-year integrated B.Tech-MTech or an integrated LLB) are eligible if the integrated degree is a full graduation-level qualification.
Degrees obtained through distance education or correspondence programmes are valid if the university or institution is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Distance Education Bureau, or the Central Government.
The IBPS PO age requirement for the standard (General category) is 20 to 30 years. This means a candidate must not have been born earlier than 02.08.1996 and must not have been born later than 01.08.2006 (based on the 2025 cycle cutoff dates). The exact birth date range for 2026 will be confirmed in the official notification.
Unlike some other recruitment exams that set the minimum age at 18, IBPS PO sets it at 20. This is because the PO post is a managerial officer role requiring a graduation degree, and IBPS mandates a minimum level of professional maturity. The maximum age of 30 reflects the entry-level nature of the post within the banking career hierarchy.
The Government of India's reservation policy provides age relaxation to candidates from reserved and special categories. The relaxation is applied to the upper age limit.
| Category | Age Relaxation in Upper Limit |
| Scheduled Caste (SC) | 5 years |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 5 years |
| Other Backward Classes (OBC, Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 years |
| Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwBD) -- Unreserved | 10 years |
| PwBD -- OBC | 13 years |
| PwBD -- SC/ST | 15 years |
| Ex-Servicemen and Commissioned Officers | 5 years |
| Widows, Divorced Women, Women Judicially Separated (not remarried) -- Unreserved | 9 years (maximum age 39 years) |
| Widows, Divorced Women (not remarried) -- OBC | 12 years |
| Widows, Divorced Women (not remarried) -- SC/ST | 14 years |
| Persons affected by 1984 Riots | 5 years |
| J&K Domicile Candidates (during January 1, 1980 to December 31, 1989) | 5 years |
OBC candidates must produce a Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) certificate. The certificate must be in the format prescribed by the Government of India and must be issued by the competent authority not earlier than one year from the closing date of the application. OBC candidates belonging to the creamy layer are treated as General category candidates and are not eligible for OBC age relaxation.
PwBD candidates require a disability certificate. The certificate must be issued by a competent medical authority and must clearly state the type and percentage of disability. The minimum disability required for eligibility is 40 percent.
Ex-Servicemen age relaxation is calculated differently. ESM candidates subtract the total military service from their actual age. The resulting age must not exceed the upper age limit for the post by more than 3 years.
IBPS requires candidates to have basic computer proficiency. While no specific certification is mandated, candidates must be comfortable operating a desktop or laptop because the entire IBPS PO process (Prelims, Mains, and the Descriptive Paper) is conducted online in computer-based mode. Proficiency in word processing tools is beneficial for the Mains Descriptive Paper (essay and comprehension or letter writing).
IBPS PO posts in participating banks are often region-specific. Some banks may require candidates to have proficiency in the official or local language of the state where they are being posted. This requirement is specified by the individual participating bank and may be verified through a language proficiency test or certificate at the time of joining.
Candidates should indicate their language proficiency correctly in the application form. Banks may prioritise candidates with knowledge of the local language for posting in regional offices.
IBPS PO does not impose a limit on the number of times a candidate can appear. Candidates can apply in every cycle as long as they are within the age limit for their category.
This is a significant advantage compared to some other exams with attempt caps. A candidate who applies at age 20 (minimum) and belongs to the General category can theoretically appear in every annual IBPS PO cycle until they turn 30, giving approximately 10 attempts.
Selected candidates are required to serve the bank for a minimum period, typically 2 years, after appointment. Breaking the bond during this period requires payment of a penalty as specified by the participating bank. Candidates should verify the bond terms of their allocated bank at the time of joining.
Selected candidates must satisfy the medical fitness requirements of the participating bank. A pre-appointment medical examination is conducted by the bank. Candidates found medically unfit at this stage may not receive the appointment letter despite qualifying all exam stages.
Candidates who have been convicted by a court of law, arrested on a cognisable offence and charge-sheeted, or subjected to adverse entries by a police authority may be disqualified. Full disclosure is required in the application form.
Candidates who are already employed in a participating bank as an officer or are under a bond with any other organisation may face restrictions. The notification specifies conditions under which serving employees can apply.
After final selection, candidates must produce originals and attested copies of the following documents during document verification at the bank.
| Document | Purpose |
| Class 10 Certificate / Marksheet | Date of birth verification |
| Class 12 Certificate / Marksheet | Educational record |
| Graduation Degree Certificate | Qualification verification |
| All Semester / Year Marksheets | Academic record |
| Category Certificate (SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD) | Category claim verification |
| OBC-NCL Certificate (if applicable) | Non-Creamy Layer verification |
| Ex-Servicemen Discharge Certificate | ESM category verification |
| Valid Photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, Passport, Voter ID) | Identity verification |
| Passport-size Photographs | As specified |
| Call Letter from All Stages | Proof of exam participation |
| No Objection Certificate | If currently employed in government/public sector |
Applying as OBC without a Non-Creamy Layer certificate: OBC reservation benefits are available only to candidates who belong to the Non-Creamy Layer. Candidates in the Creamy Layer cannot claim OBC relaxation. Verify your NCL status before selecting OBC in the application.
Applying with a degree from an unrecognised institution: Degrees from private universities, deemed universities, or correspondence programmes must be verified for UGC recognition before applying. A degree from an unrecognised institution is not valid for IBPS PO.
Calculating age against the wrong date: The age cutoff date is specified in the notification (typically August 1 of the year). Calculate your age against this date, not the notification date or exam date.
Assuming final-year students can apply: IBPS PO does not permit candidates whose graduation result has not been declared by the notification cutoff date. Verify your result declaration date against the notification requirement.
Ignoring language proficiency requirements: Some participating banks screen for local language proficiency at the time of posting. Candidates who do not meet this requirement may not receive a posting in their preferred bank zone.
Before filling the application form, go through the following:
Can a candidate from any graduation stream apply for IBPS PO? Yes. Any graduation degree from a recognised university qualifies, regardless of stream. Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering, Law, and all other fields are equally valid.
Can I apply for IBPS PO if I am in the final year of graduation? Generally, no. IBPS PO requires the final graduation result to be declared before a specified date in the notification. Verify the exact date in the 2026 notification before applying.
Is there a minimum percentage requirement in graduation? No. IBPS PO does not require a minimum percentage in graduation for any category of post.
Is work experience required for IBPS PO? No. IBPS PO is an entry-level officer recruitment. No prior work experience is required or considered in the selection process.
Can a candidate apply if they have a diploma but not a degree? No. A full graduation degree is required. Diplomas, even post-graduate diplomas, do not substitute for a graduation degree unless they are considered equivalent by the government.
Does an integrated 5-year degree count as graduation? Yes, an integrated degree (such as 5-year integrated LLB or integrated B.Tech-MTech) qualifies as graduation.
All eligibility information is based on the official IBPS CRP PO/MT-XV notification published at ibps.in and standard IBPS PO eligibility conventions. The 2026 eligibility criteria will be confirmed in the CRP PO/MT-XVI notification expected in June 2026. Candidates must verify all details against the official notification before applying.
