The IBPS PO Prelims is the first stage of one of the most competitive banking examinations in India. Conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS), the Common Recruitment Process for Probationary Officers and Management Trainees selects candidates for officer-level positions across public sector banks through a three-stage process: Prelims, Mains, and Interview. In 2026, this is the 16th edition of the process, officially designated CRP PO/MT-XVI.
The IBPS PO Prelims 2026 exam is scheduled for August 22 and 23, 2026, as confirmed in the official IBPS Annual Exam Calendar 2026-27 released on January 16, 2026. More than 50 lakh candidates are expected to register for approximately 4,000 to 5,500 vacancies across 11 participating public sector banks. This is one of the most competitive banking selections in the country, with a selection ratio under 1 percent at the Prelims stage.
This page covers every aspect of IBPS PO Prelims: official exam dates, the updated exam pattern, complete syllabus overview, eligibility criteria, cutoff trends, participating banks, and a complete preparation strategy. IBPS PO stands for Institute of Banking Personnel Selection Probationary Officer. The PO post, also called Management Trainee in some participating banks, is a Junior Management Grade Scale I (JMGS-I) officer-level position in public sector banks. It is one of the most prestigious entry-level bank officer roles in the country, offering career growth, job security, an attractive salary structure, and the opportunity to work in diverse banking functions including retail, corporate, agriculture, and digital banking.
The Preliminary Examination is a computer-based test conducted in multiple shifts across two days. It acts as a screening mechanism: only candidates who clear both the sectional cutoff and the overall cutoff in Prelims are shortlisted for Mains. In the 2025 cycle, 5,208 vacancies were announced, and based on IBPS convention, approximately 10 to 15 times the number of vacancies are shortlisted from Prelims for Mains.
Prelims marks do not contribute to the final merit list. The entire selection weight rests on Mains (80 percent) and Interview (20 percent). However, clearing Prelims comfortably matters because the Prelims experience builds familiarity with the exam environment, timing, and sectional strategy that directly benefits Mains preparation.

The IBPS PO exam pattern for Prelims was updated in 2025. The revised pattern applies to the 2026 cycle. The total marks for the exam remain 100, but the internal distribution between Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning Ability was changed.
| Section Questions Marks Duration | |||
| English Language | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 35 | 30 | 20 minutes |
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 40 | 20 minutes |
| Total | 100 | 100 | 60 minutes |
The marking scheme was revised between the 2024 and 2025 cycles. Previously, Quantitative Aptitude carried 35 marks and Reasoning Ability carried 35 marks. After revision, Quantitative Aptitude carries 30 marks (5 marks transferred) and Reasoning Ability carries 40 marks. This makes Reasoning the most heavily weighted section in Prelims.
Strict sectional timing: Each section has exactly 20 minutes. Candidates cannot move to the next section before time is up, and cannot go back to a previous section. The clock on each section is independent.
No cross-section time sharing: Unlike SSC CGL where candidates can choose their time allocation per section, IBPS PO Prelims enforces strict 20-minute blocks. This fundamentally changes the preparation strategy.
Negative marking: 0.25 marks (one-fourth of one mark) is deducted for each wrong answer across all sections.
Sectional cutoff: Candidates must meet the minimum cutoff in each section individually as well as the overall cutoff. Failing the sectional cutoff in any one section disqualifies the candidate regardless of total score.
Normalisation: The exam is conducted in multiple shifts. IBPS applies normalisation to account for difficulty variation between shifts. All cutoffs are based on normalised scores.
English Language in IBPS PO Prelims is set at a moderate difficulty level. The section tests reading comprehension, grammar application, vocabulary, and sentence correction.
Topic-wise coverage:
| Topic Approximate Questions per Shift | |
| Reading Comprehension | 7 to 10 |
| Cloze Test | 5 to 7 |
| Para Jumbles | 3 to 5 |
| Fill in the Blanks | 2 to 4 |
| Error Spotting | 2 to 4 |
| Sentence Improvement | 2 to 3 |
| Word Usage and Vocabulary | 1 to 3 |
Reading Comprehension passages in IBPS PO Prelims are typically 250 to 400 words long on banking, economy, or social topics. Candidates should target 80 percent accuracy in RC for a reliable section score.
Quantitative Aptitude is the most time-pressured section: 35 questions in 20 minutes means an average of just 34 seconds per question. Candidates must rely on fast calculation methods and triage: attempt high-accuracy questions first, skip time-consuming ones, and return if time permits.
Topic-wise coverage:
| Topic Approximate Questions per Shift | |
| Data Interpretation (Tables, Graphs, Charts) | 10 to 15 |
| Number Series | 3 to 5 |
| Simplification and Approximation | 5 to 7 |
| Arithmetic (Percentage, Profit/Loss, SI/CI, TW, TSD, Ratio) | 7 to 10 |
| Mensuration and Geometry | 1 to 2 |
Data Interpretation is the backbone of the QA section. Candidates who cannot calculate percentages, ratios, and averages quickly will run out of time. Practice DI sets daily as part of IBPS PO Prelims preparation.
Reasoning Ability carries the highest marks in the revised pattern. It is also the section where question difficulty can vary most dramatically between shifts.
Topic-wise coverage:
| Topic Approximate Questions per Shift | |
| Puzzles and Seating Arrangement | 15 to 20 |
| Syllogism | 3 to 5 |
| Inequalities | 3 to 5 |
| Blood Relations | 2 to 3 |
| Coding-Decoding | 2 to 3 |
| Alphanumeric Series | 2 to 3 |
| Direction Sense | 1 to 2 |
| Miscellaneous | 1 to 3 |
Puzzles dominate Reasoning. In most shifts, 3 to 4 puzzle sets appear, each with 4 to 5 questions. Candidates who can solve puzzle sets quickly and accurately score 30 or more in this section. Those who cannot solve puzzles independently may struggle to clear even the sectional cutoff.
For the complete topic list with preparation priority and weightage analysis, visit the IBPS PO Prelims Syllabus page.
Candidates must be Indian citizens. Subjects of Nepal and Bhutan, Tibetan refugees who settled in India before January 1, 1962, and persons of Indian origin who migrated from specific countries (Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Zaire, or Zambia) with the intention of permanently settling in India are also eligible.
Any graduation degree from a university recognised by the Government of India is accepted. There is no minimum percentage requirement in graduation. No specific stream is required; BA, BCom, BSc, B.Tech, LLB, BCA, and all other graduation degrees are valid.
Candidates must have their graduation result declared before the date specified in the official notification. In the 2025 cycle, this was July 21, 2025. The equivalent date for 2026 will be specified in the 2026 notification.
Candidates must be between 20 and 30 years of age as of the cutoff date in the notification. The upper age limit is relaxed for reserved category candidates as listed in the eligibility section above.
For post-wise age requirements, reserved category certificate formats, and other eligibility conditions, visit the IBPS PO Eligibility Criteria page.

Track your coverage on the IBPS PO Prelims Syllabus Tracker.
Prioritise in this order: Puzzles and Seating Arrangement (Reasoning) -- Reading Comprehension (English) -- Data Interpretation (QA) -- all remaining topics.
Attempt subject-wise tests under the 20-minute timer. This builds the reflexes needed to manage 35 questions in 20 minutes. Identify which topics within each section consume the most time per correct answer and adjust attempt order accordingly.
Attempt one full mock test daily in this phase. After every mock, spend time equal to the exam duration reviewing every wrong answer. Track your section-wise scores across mocks to monitor progress.
