The IBPS PO Prelims syllabus defines exactly what will be tested in the three sections of the qualifying examination. Knowing the syllabus in detail is the starting point of any serious preparation plan: it tells you what to study, what to skip, and how to allocate time across topics. This page provides the complete, official syllabus for IBPS PO Prelims 2026, the updated exam pattern with the revised marking scheme, and topic-wise weightage derived from analysis of previous year question papers.
To track progress against the syllabus, use the IBPS PO Prelims Syllabus Tracker. To practice individual topics after covering them, use the Aspirant Mitraa IBPS PO Prelims Test Series, which includes dedicated topic-wise and section-wise tests for all three Prelims subjects.
The IBPS PO Prelims exam pattern was revised in 2025. The total marks remain 100, but the internal marks distribution between Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning Ability was updated.
| Section Questions Maximum Marks Duration | |||
| English Language | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 35 | 30 | 20 minutes |
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 40 | 20 minutes |
| Total | 100 | 100 | 60 minutes |
Sectional timing is strict and enforced by the system. Each section has exactly 20 minutes. The exam software automatically moves candidates to the next section when the section timer expires. Candidates cannot revisit a previous section.
Both sectional and overall cutoffs must be cleared. Candidates who score above the overall cutoff but fail the sectional cutoff in any one section are not shortlisted for Mains. This means no section can be neglected entirely.
Normalisation applies. The exam is conducted across multiple shifts over two days. IBPS applies normalisation to account for variation in question difficulty between shifts. All cutoffs are based on normalised scores.
It is important to understand what the Prelims syllabus covers compared to the Mains syllabus, so that preparation is structured correctly.
| Aspect Prelims Mains | ||
| Sections | 3 (English, QA, Reasoning) | 4 Objective + 1 Descriptive |
| Total Marks | 100 | 225 |
| Nature | Qualifying | Merit-determining |
| Contribution to Final Merit | Zero | 80% |
| Difficulty Level | Moderate | Moderate to High |
| Additional Sections | None | General/Banking Awareness, Data Analysis, Computer Aptitude |
Everything in the Prelims syllabus also appears in the Mains syllabus at a higher level of difficulty. Building strong Prelims fundamentals benefits both stages. Do not treat Prelims preparation as something separate from Mains; treat it as the foundation on which Mains performance is built.
| Topic Sub-details | |
| Reading Comprehension | Story-based, economy-based, banking-based, and social issue-based passages; inference, title, tone, vocabulary-in-context questions |
| Cloze Test | 5 to 7 blanks in a connected passage; grammar-based and contextual fill |
| Para Jumbles | Rearrangement of 4 to 6 sentences into a coherent paragraph |
| Fill in the Blanks | Single blanks with grammar or vocabulary options; double fillers |
| Error Spotting | Identify grammatically incorrect parts of a sentence |
| Sentence Correction / Improvement | Choose the correct phrasing from given options |
| Word Rearrangement | Arrange given words to form a grammatically correct sentence |
| Synonyms and Antonyms | In context of Reading Comprehension or as standalone questions |
| Phrase Replacement | Replace underlined phrase with the most appropriate option |
| Match the Column | Match sentence halves or word-definition pairs |
| Topic Average Questions per Shift Priority | ||
| Reading Comprehension | 7 to 10 | Very High |
| Cloze Test | 5 to 7 | Very High |
| Para Jumbles | 3 to 5 | High |
| Error Spotting | 2 to 4 | High |
| Fill in the Blanks | 2 to 4 | High |
| Sentence Improvement | 2 to 3 | Medium |
| Word Usage and Vocabulary | 1 to 3 | Medium |
| Miscellaneous | 1 to 2 | Lower |
Reading Comprehension and Cloze Test together account for 12 to 17 of the 30 questions in most shifts. Mastering these two topic types builds the highest scoring efficiency per unit of preparation time. RC passages in IBPS PO Prelims are typically 250 to 450 words and focus on banking, economy, environment, or social themes.
Error Spotting and Fill in the Blanks are grammar-dependent. Candidates who are weak in basic grammar (subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, article use, pronoun reference) should build grammar fundamentals before attempting these question types under time pressure.
| Topic Sub-details | |
| Data Interpretation | Tables, Bar Graphs, Pie Charts, Line Graphs, Mixed DI, Caselet DI |
| Number Series | Missing number, wrong number in series |
| Simplification and Approximation | BODMAS-based simplification; percentage-based approximation |
| Percentage | Basic concept, percentage change, successive percentage change |
| Profit, Loss and Discount | Simple profit/loss, successive discount, marked price problems |
| Simple and Compound Interest | SI, CI, half-yearly and quarterly compounding, instalments |
| Time and Work | Efficiency-based, pipes and cisterns |
| Speed, Distance and Time | Relative speed, trains, boats and streams |
| Ratio and Proportion | Simple ratio, compound ratio, proportion-based word problems |
| Mixture and Alligation | Simple mixing, replacement, multiple ingredient mixing |
| Average | Simple average, weighted average, average change problems |
| Number System | Divisibility, LCM, HCF, factors, basic properties |
| Quadratic Equations | Finding roots, comparison of roots |
| Mensuration | Area, perimeter of 2D figures; volume of 3D figures (basic) |
| Probability | Basic probability, independent events (less frequent) |
| Topic Average Questions per Shift Priority | ||
| Data Interpretation | 10 to 15 | Very High |
| Simplification and Approximation | 5 to 7 | Very High |
| Number Series | 3 to 5 | High |
| Arithmetic (all topics combined) | 8 to 12 | High |
| Quadratic Equations | 3 to 5 | High |
| Miscellaneous Arithmetic | 2 to 4 | Medium |
Data Interpretation accounts for 30 to 45 percent of this section in most shifts. Candidates must be able to read tables, bar graphs, pie charts, and line graphs quickly and perform percentage, ratio, average, and comparison calculations with speed. Without strong DI skills, clearing the QA section comfortably within 20 minutes is difficult.
Simplification and Approximation are the fastest questions in this section. A candidate who has memorised squares up to 30, cubes up to 15, and basic square roots can solve Simplification questions in 15 to 20 seconds each, freeing up time for longer DI sets.
Number Series and Quadratic Equations are high-scoring topics because they follow recognisable patterns. Both can be practised systematically and yield consistent marks once the pattern vocabulary is learned.

| Topic Average Questions per Shift Priority | ||
| Puzzles and Seating Arrangement (combined) | 15 to 20 | Very High |
| Syllogism | 3 to 5 | High |
| Inequalities | 3 to 5 | High |
| Blood Relations | 2 to 3 | High |
| Coding-Decoding | 2 to 3 | High |
| Alphanumeric Series | 2 to 3 | Medium |
| Direction Sense | 1 to 2 | Medium |
| Input-Output | 1 to 2 | Medium |
| Miscellaneous | 1 to 3 | Lower |
Puzzles and Seating Arrangement collectively make up 43 to 57 percent of the Reasoning section. This one topic area determines whether a candidate scores 30 or above in Reasoning, or struggles to clear the sectional cutoff.
Puzzle types in IBPS PO Prelims range from simple (single-row linear arrangement with 5 people) to complex (floor-based arrangement with uncertain-total-person sets or hybrid puzzle combining seating with day-month data). Candidates must practise all puzzle formats systematically.
Syllogism and Inequalities are the fastest questions in Reasoning. A candidate who has mastered these two topic types can answer 6 to 10 questions in 4 to 5 minutes, which frees up the remaining 15 minutes for puzzle sets. This is the optimal section strategy for most candidates.
Step 1: Map the full syllabus before starting. Use the IBPS PO Prelims Syllabus Tracker to list every topic and mark its current status (not started, in progress, complete). This gives a clear view of the workload from day one.
Step 2: Prioritise by weightage. Invest the most time in the topics that carry the most questions: Puzzles and Seating Arrangement, Data Interpretation, and Reading Comprehension. These three topic areas alone account for approximately 40 to 55 percent of the total marks in a typical Prelims shift.
Step 3: Do not skip low-weightage topics entirely. Topics like Direction Sense, Blood Relations, and simple Arithmetic may appear in only 1 to 2 questions each, but collectively they contribute 10 to 15 marks. More importantly, the sectional cutoff must be cleared in every section. Neglecting minor topics within a section can cause a candidate to underperform on the sectional threshold.
Step 4: Test each topic after covering it. After studying a topic, take the corresponding topic-wise test immediately. The IBPS PO Prelims Test Series includes dedicated topic-wise tests for every subject. This test-review-revise loop is what converts concept understanding into marks.
Step 5: Move to subject-wise tests. After completing all topics in a section, attempt full section-wise tests under the 20-minute timer. This builds the time management reflexes specific to IBPS PO Prelims.
Step 6: Shift to full mock tests in the final 4 to 5 weeks. Take one full mock per day in the final preparation phase. Each mock should be attempted with all three sections in sequence under strict timing. After the mock, spend equal time reviewing every wrong and skipped question.
Based on the weightage analysis above, the following time allocation is suggested for daily Prelims preparation.
| Section Daily Time (During Topic Phase) Daily Time (During Mock Phase) | ||
| Reasoning Ability | 90 minutes | 30 minutes review after mock |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 75 minutes | 30 minutes review after mock |
| English Language | 45 minutes | 20 minutes review after mock |
| Full Mock + Review | Not applicable | 120 minutes |
During the topic phase, focus on concept building and topic-wise tests. During the mock phase, shift 70 percent of study time to full mocks and detailed error analysis.
Does the IBPS PO Prelims syllabus change every year? The core syllabus remains stable. However, the marking scheme and exam pattern can be revised as happened in 2025 when Reasoning marks were increased and QA marks were reduced. Always verify the exact pattern in the official notification before the exam.
Is the Mains syllabus similar to Prelims? The three Prelims sections (English, QA, Reasoning) are included in Mains at a higher difficulty level. Mains also includes additional sections: General/Economy/Banking Awareness and a Descriptive English paper. Prelims preparation builds the foundation for Mains.
Which section has the highest marks in Prelims? After the 2025 revision, Reasoning Ability carries the highest marks (40 out of 100). English Language and Quantitative Aptitude each carry 30 marks.
Are there any topics in IBPS PO Prelims that are always present? Puzzles and Seating Arrangement (Reasoning), Data Interpretation (QA), and Reading Comprehension (English) have appeared in virtually every shift of every IBPS PO Prelims exam. These three topics are non-optional in preparation.
Syllabus and exam pattern data on this page are based on the official IBPS CRP PO/MT-XV notification published at ibps.in and the revised exam pattern announced for the 2025 cycle. Topic-wise weightage is derived from analysis of official question papers from 2022 to 2025. This page will be updated when the CRP PO/MT-XVI notification is released.
