The IBPS PO Prelims cutoff is the minimum score a candidate must achieve to advance to the Mains examination. IBPS releases two types of cutoffs for Prelims: an overall cutoff (minimum total marks out of 100) and a sectional cutoff (minimum marks in each individual section). Both must be cleared simultaneously. A candidate who meets the overall cutoff but fails the sectional cutoff in any one section is not shortlisted for Mains.
This page covers the official cutoff data from 2022 to 2025, section-wise cutoffs, the key factors that determine where the cutoff lands each year, safe score targets for the 2026 cycle, and what to do after the result is declared.
The official IBPS PO Prelims 2026 cutoff will be released along with the Prelims result in September 2026, after the exam is conducted on August 22 and 23, 2026. Until then, candidates can use the historical cutoff data from 2022 to 2025 to set a realistic and safe preparation target.
Based on recent trends, the expected overall cutoff for the General category in 2026 is in the range of 47 to 53 marks out of 100. A safe preparation target of 60 to 65 marks provides a buffer of 7 to 18 marks above the historical cutoff range and accounts for exam-day variation and normalisation impact.
This page will be updated with the official 2026 cutoff as soon as it is released at ibps.in.

Notes:
IBPS releases section-wise cutoffs in addition to the overall cutoff. These are the minimum marks a candidate must score within each section.
| Section Maximum Marks (Revised 2025 Pattern) General Cutoff SC/ST/OBC/PwD Cutoff | |||
| Reasoning Ability | 40 | 9.75 | 5.75 |
| English Language | 30 | 13.25 | 8.25 |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 30 | 6.25 | 4.25 |
| Section Maximum Marks (Earlier Pattern) General Cutoff SC/ST/OBC/PwD Cutoff | |||
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 10.00 | 5.75 |
| English Language | 30 | 11.50 | 8.25 |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 35 | 7.00 | 4.25 |
The section-wise cutoffs look low in absolute terms (for example, 6.25 out of 30 for QA in 2025) because they are designed as minimum safety thresholds, not competitive targets. A candidate scoring exactly the section-wise cutoff in QA while performing well in Reasoning and English may still fall short of the overall cutoff of 49 marks.
The Prelims cutoff is not fixed in advance. IBPS determines it after the exam based on several factors.
More vacancies mean more candidates need to be shortlisted for Mains, which tends to push the cutoff lower. Fewer vacancies increase competition at the cutoff threshold, pushing it higher. The 2025 cycle had 5,208 vacancies, which contributed to a cutoff of 49.21 for the General category.
Higher participation increases competition and generally raises the cutoff. Over 50 lakh candidates apply for IBPS PO each year, but the number who actually appear in Prelims is typically 30 to 40 lakh after absentees.
A harder exam leads to lower overall scores across candidates, which pushes the cutoff down. An easier exam pushes it up. This is why the 2023-24 cutoff (54.25 for General) was higher than the 2025 cutoff (49.21): the 2023-24 paper was perceived as easier by most candidates.
IBPS conducts Prelims in multiple shifts across two days. Each shift may have a slightly different difficulty level. Normalisation converts raw scores to normalised scores on a common scale. The cutoff is applied to normalised scores. A candidate in an easy shift may see a slightly lower normalised score than their raw score; a candidate in a harder shift may see a slightly higher normalised score.
Different categories have separate cutoffs because reservations determine how many candidates from each category must be shortlisted. The General category cutoff is typically the highest, followed by OBC/EWS, then SC, then ST.
| Cycle General Cutoff Remarks | ||
| 2022 (CRP XII) | 49.75 | Moderate difficulty |
| 2023-24 (CRP XIII) | 54.25 | Highest recent cutoff; paper rated easier |
| 2024 (CRP XIV) | 48.50 | Slight drop; difficulty increased slightly |
| 2025 (CRP XV) | 49.21 | Marginal increase; consistent difficulty range |
The General category cutoff has ranged between 48.50 and 54.25 across the last four cycles. The band of 48 to 55 is the realistic competitive range for 2026. Candidates targeting 60 or above sit comfortably above the top of this historical range.
These three benchmarks serve different purposes in preparation planning.
| Benchmark Definition General Category Range | ||
| Cutoff Score | Minimum to qualify for Mains | 48 to 55 (based on 2022-2025) |
| Safe Score | Score with high confidence of qualifying despite normalisation | 60 to 65 |
| Good Score | Score indicating strong competitive preparation | 70 to 80 |
Candidates who consistently score 70 or above in full mock tests are well-prepared to clear the Prelims cutoff regardless of shift difficulty. Candidates scoring 55 to 65 need to be more careful about accuracy and section strategy on exam day.
The sectional cutoff is low, but scoring only at the sectional cutoff level in any section makes overall cutoff clearance very difficult. The following targets are recommended based on historical data.
| Section Sectional Cutoff (General, 2025) Recommended Target (General) | ||
| Reasoning Ability (Max: 40) | 9.75 | 24 to 30 |
| English Language (Max: 30) | 13.25 | 18 to 23 |
| Quantitative Aptitude (Max: 30) | 6.25 | 15 to 20 |
| Total (Max: 100) | 49.21 | 60 to 65 |
Achieving the recommended target in all three sections simultaneously produces a total of 57 to 73 marks, which comfortably covers the historical cutoff range.
While the cutoff itself is determined by external factors, candidates can control several variables that affect their probability of clearing it.
Accuracy rate: With 0.25 negative marking, accuracy is as important as total attempts. A candidate who attempts 80 questions with 87 percent accuracy scores approximately 64 marks (80 correct minus 12 wrong multiplied by 0.25 = 70 minus 3 = 67). A candidate who attempts 95 questions with 75 percent accuracy scores approximately 57 marks (71.25 correct minus 23.75 wrong-penalty = 47.5). The first candidate clears the cutoff more comfortably despite attempting fewer questions.
Section sequence within 20-minute blocks: Candidates who have a fixed section strategy (which question type to attempt first in each section) are faster under pressure because decisions are pre-made.
Puzzle and DI speed: These two topic areas account for the most questions and the most time. Candidates who solve puzzles in 3 to 4 minutes rather than 5 to 6 minutes have measurably better Prelims scores because the extra 10 to 15 seconds per question adds up across a full puzzle set.
Mock test habit: Candidates who have practised 30 or more full Prelims mock tests before the exam are familiar with the sectional timer, the question difficulty range, and their own accuracy patterns. This familiarity prevents panic on exam day. The Aspirant Mitraa IBPS PO Prelims Test Series provides 400 tests covering topic-wise, section-wise, and full mock levels, giving candidates more than enough material for this habit.
IBPS releases the Prelims cutoff on its official website at ibps.in, along with the Prelims result and scorecard. The cutoff is not published as a standalone PDF but is included in the result notification document.
Steps to access the official cutoff:
To check your individual scorecard and see how your normalised score compares to the cutoff, log into the IBPS candidate portal with your registration number and date of birth.
Begin Mains preparation immediately. The gap between the Prelims result and the Mains exam date is typically 5 to 8 weeks. Mains is significantly more difficult than Prelims and covers additional subjects (Banking Awareness, Data Analysis and Interpretation at a higher level, and a Descriptive English paper). Candidates who do not begin Mains preparation before the Prelims result are at a significant disadvantage.
Download your scorecard from the IBPS candidate portal. Review your section-wise normalised scores to identify which section pulled your overall score below the cutoff. If the issue is a single section (for example, QA scored well below the sectional cutoff), that section needs focused work before the next cycle.
Begin preparation for the IBPS PO 2027 cycle without delay. The IBPS PO Prelims exam is held annually, and candidates can appear in every cycle until they exceed the age limit. Use the IBPS PO Prelims Test Series for topic-wise and section-wise remediation.
Candidates sometimes confuse Prelims cutoff with Mains cutoff. The difference is significant.
| Aspect Prelims Cutoff Mains Cutoff | ||
| Purpose | Qualifies for Mains | Qualifies for Interview |
| Contribution to Final Merit | Zero | 80% |
| Marks Out Of | 100 | 225 |
| Nature | Overall + Sectional | Overall + Sectional |
| Historical Range (General) | 48 to 54 | 66 to 76 out of 225 |
The Mains cutoff, unlike Prelims, contributes to the final merit. A candidate who clears Mains with a score close to the cutoff is at a disadvantage in the final merit list compared to a candidate who scores significantly above the cutoff.
When will the IBPS PO Prelims 2026 cutoff be released? The cutoff will be released along with the Prelims result, expected in September 2026, after the exam on August 22 and 23.
Is the cutoff the same for all states? The IBPS PO Prelims cutoff is a national-level cutoff, not state-specific. The cutoff applies uniformly across all exam centres.
Can I clear the cutoff if I score well in only two sections? No. The sectional cutoff in all three sections must be cleared. Even if your total score exceeds the overall cutoff, failing to meet the minimum marks in any one section means disqualification.
Does normalisation help or hurt candidates? Normalisation is neutral in intent. It adjusts for shift-level difficulty variation. Candidates in harder shifts benefit; those in easier shifts may see a small reduction. On average, the system is fair across large numbers of candidates.
All cutoff data on this page is sourced from official IBPS result notices published at ibps.in. The 2026 cutoff will be published here as soon as IBPS officially releases it. Historical cutoff figures for 2022-2025 are drawn from official IBPS scorecard PDFs and verified result documents.
