The State Bank of India Probationary Officer examination is widely regarded as the most prestigious entry-level officer recruitment in Indian public sector banking. Every year, over six lakh candidates apply for a few hundred vacancies, making it one of the most competitive banking examinations in the country. The brand reputation of SBI, the highest salary among public sector banks at the officer entry level, a clear promotion path that can take a fresh recruit all the way to Chairman level, and the security of a government job all converge to make this examination the first choice of banking aspirants across India.
This page covers every aspect of SBI PO 2026 in one place - what the examination is, its three-stage selection process, the exam pattern, syllabus, eligibility conditions, salary structure, cutoff trends, and the preparation approach that works in a competition where the margin between selection and rejection is often less than two marks.
The Probationary Officer joins SBI at the Junior Management Grade Scale-I (JMGS-I) level. The role is not merely clerical. A PO is groomed from day one to eventually lead branch operations, manage teams, process loans, handle customer relationships, and take managerial decisions. The two-year probation period involves structured rotational training across different banking functions before the officer is confirmed as a permanent employee.
At the time of joining, selected candidates sign a service bond of Rs. 2 lakh, committing to serve the bank for a minimum of three years. This reflects the investment the bank makes in training and development during probation.
The SBI PO is the starting point of a career that, through internal promotions based on performance and departmental examinations, can lead to roles including Assistant Manager, Deputy Manager, Manager, Chief Manager, Assistant General Manager, Deputy General Manager, General Manager, Managing Director, and Chairman. SBI is perhaps the only public sector bank where entry through the PO exam carries a realistic trajectory to the highest position in the organisation.
The SBI PO 2026 notification is expected in June 2026 on the official SBI careers portal at sbi.co.in/web/careers. Based on the 2025 cycle and historical patterns, here are the expected key details:
All dates are tentative pending the official notification. Always verify from the official SBI careers portal once the notification is released.
For official notification details once released, visit the SBI PO Notification page.
The SBI PO selection is a three-stage process. Understanding what each phase demands is essential before building a preparation plan.
The Prelims is an online objective test of 100 questions for 100 marks, completed in exactly 60 minutes with a strict sectional time limit. There are three sections, each with its own 20-minute window that cannot be borrowed across sections.
The sections are:
There is negative marking of 0.25 marks per wrong answer. There is no sectional cutoff in Prelims - only an overall cutoff applies. SBI shortlists approximately 10 times the total number of vacancies from Prelims for the Mains examination.
Critically, Prelims marks are not counted toward the final merit list. The Prelims only determines who gets to sit for the Mains.
The Mains is the most important stage. It consists of two parts: an Objective Test and a Descriptive Test.
The Objective Test has four sections with individual sectional cutoffs applicable:
Total Objective Test: 155 questions, 200 marks, 3 hours with sectional time limits.
The Descriptive Test in English runs for 30 minutes and carries 50 marks. It includes tasks such as writing a Letter, Essay, Email, Report, and Situation Analysis. The Descriptive Test is evaluated only for candidates who clear the Objective Test sectional cutoffs.
Total Mains marks: 250.
The Mains is bilingual (Hindi and English) except for the Descriptive Test, which is in English only.
Candidates who qualify Mains are called for Phase III. This stage carries 50 marks in total:
A Psychometric Test is also conducted at this stage for personality profiling. The results are placed before the Interview panel to provide deeper context about the candidate. The Psychometric Test carries no marks of its own.
The final merit list is prepared by adding Phase II and Phase III marks in the ratio of 75:25. The Phase II Mains score (out of 250) is normalised to 75 marks, and the Phase III score (out of 50) is normalised to 25 marks. The combined score out of 100 determines final ranking and selection.

SBI PO eligibility covers nationality, age, educational qualification, and attempt limits.
Nationality: Candidates must be Indian citizens. Subjects of Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibetan refugees who settled in India before 1 January 1962, and persons of Indian origin from certain specified countries, may also be eligible subject to government conditions.
Age: Minimum 21 years, maximum 30 years. Candidates must have been born not earlier than 2 April 1996 and not later than 1 April 2005 (for the 2026 cycle). Age relaxation applies as follows:
Educational Qualification: A Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university or equivalent qualification approved by the Central Government. Final-year students awaiting results may apply provisionally but must produce their degree certificate before the interview stage. Candidates with a CA qualification are also eligible.
Attempt Limit: SBI counts an attempt from the Mains examination, not from the Prelims. Appearing in Prelims alone does not consume an attempt. The maximum number of attempts is as follows:
Attempts are counted from the SBI PO Mains examination held on 18 April 2010 onwards.
For the complete eligibility conditions with all special category provisions, visit the SBI PO Eligibility Criteria page.
English Language covers Reading Comprehension, Cloze Test, Error Detection, Sentence Improvement, Para Jumbles, Fill in the Blanks, and Vocabulary-based questions. In the 2025 revised pattern, English was increased from 30 to 40 questions. Confirm current pattern from the 2026 notification.
Quantitative Aptitude covers Number Series, Simplification and Approximation, Data Interpretation (tables, bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs), Quadratic Equations, and Arithmetic Topics including Percentage, Profit and Loss, Ratio and Proportion, Simple and Compound Interest, Time and Work, Time Speed Distance, Average, and Mixtures.
Reasoning Ability covers Puzzles and Seating Arrangements (the heaviest topic), Syllogisms, Inequalities, Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Direction and Distance, Alphanumeric Series, Input-Output, and Data Sufficiency.
Reasoning and Computer Aptitude adds Computer Knowledge topics - basics of hardware and software, operating systems, internet concepts, MS Office basics, and cybersecurity fundamentals - to the advanced reasoning topics from Prelims.
Data Analysis and Interpretation at Mains level is significantly more complex than Prelims DI. It includes Caselet DI, Missing Data DI, mixed graph DI, and questions requiring multi-step calculations.
General/Economy/Banking Awareness covers Current Affairs of the last 6 months (national and international), Banking and Financial Awareness (RBI policies, banking terms, regulatory bodies, financial instruments), and Static Banking and Economy concepts.
English Descriptive Test in 2025 introduced new writing formats including Email Writing, Report Writing, and Situation Analysis, in addition to Essay and Letter Writing. This addition made the Descriptive Test more comprehensive and professional in orientation.

One of the strongest motivators for SBI PO preparation is the salary and career structure that comes with selection.
The starting basic pay is Rs. 48,480 per month, with four advance increments that bring the effective starting basic pay to approximately Rs. 56,480. The full pay scale follows the pattern Rs. 48480-2000/7-62480-2340/2-67160-2680/7-85920.
In addition to basic pay, SBI POs receive Dearness Allowance (revised quarterly based on CPI), House Rent Allowance (7% to 9% of basic depending on posting city), City Compensatory Allowance, Special Allowance, Transport Allowance, and Medical Allowance. After all allowances and standard deductions, the in-hand salary for a newly joined SBI PO is approximately Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 85,000 per month.
The annual CTC at a metro posting like Mumbai is approximately Rs. 20.43 lakh, making SBI PO the highest-paying public sector banking entry-level officer position in India.
Beyond the salary, SBI POs receive concessional home loans, car loans, and personal loans at significantly lower interest rates than market. Medical coverage for self and family, Leave Fare Concession, and a Contributory Pension Scheme add substantial non-cash value to the package.
The promotion path is one of the strongest arguments for choosing SBI PO over other banking positions. Starting as Junior Management Grade Scale-I, officers can progress to MMGS-II, MMGS-III, SMGS-IV, SMGS-V, TEGS-VI, TEGS-VII, and finally to Managing Director and Chairman level. Each promotion involves a departmental examination and performance evaluation. Officers with consistent performance and the right aptitude can reach senior management within 12 to 15 years of joining.

Understanding SBI PO cutoff history helps aspirants set realistic targets during preparation.
The 2025 Prelims cutoff (exam held on 4th and 5th August 2025) was:
The 2024 Prelims cutoff was:
The difference between the 2024 and 2025 General cutoffs (61.75 vs 66.75) reflects how paper difficulty and the number of appearing candidates shift the threshold from year to year.
For Mains, SBI applies sectional cutoffs in addition to overall cutoff. The 2025 Mains overall cutoff was:
Mains sectional cutoffs are released separately and apply to each objective section.
The 2025 final cutoff was:
For the complete year-wise cutoff data from 2019 to 2025 across all stages and categories, visit the SBI PO Cutoff page.
The SBI PO examination demands speed, accuracy, and subject depth across three distinct assessment stages. Preparation must be structured accordingly.
The foundation phase is about building core concept clarity across all Prelims sections without the pressure of timed practice.
For Quantitative Aptitude, start with arithmetic topics (percentages, profit-loss, ratio, SI/CI, time-work, TSD) before moving to DI and number series. For most aspirants, arithmetic is the stable scoring ground, while DI is the differentiator.
For Reasoning Ability, master Puzzles and Seating Arrangements first. They typically carry 30 to 40 marks in the Prelims reasoning section and are non-negotiable. Spend at least 45 minutes daily on puzzle practice throughout preparation.
For English Language, Reading Comprehension is the highest weightage topic. Reading one editorial daily from The Hindu or Indian Express improves vocabulary, comprehension speed, and grammar simultaneously.
Once concepts are clear, transition to timed sectional practice. The 20-minute sectional time limit in SBI PO Prelims is one of its defining challenges. Candidates who prepare without sectional timing are often caught off-guard.
Practice complete 20-minute sectional tests for each section daily. Track accuracy for each topic within the section and identify which question types are reliable scorers versus which consume excessive time.
For Quantitative Aptitude, develop calculation shortcuts for multiplication, percentage calculations, and square roots. The ability to perform mental arithmetic quickly is often the difference between clearing and missing the Prelims cutoff in this section.
The SBI PO Prelims Test Series on Aspirant Mitraa is designed to simulate the actual examination experience with UPSC-equivalent difficulty calibration. The test series allows aspirants to practice under strict sectional time limits, analyse performance by section and topic, and progressively build both speed and accuracy.
Attempt at least 15 to 20 full-length Prelims mock tests in the final 6 weeks. After each mock, conduct a thorough analysis:
For Mains preparation, begin the Descriptive Test writing practice early. One Letter and one Essay per week, evaluated against a marking rubric, builds the writing quality and speed required for the 30-minute Descriptive window.
The General/Economy/Banking Awareness section in SBI PO Mains is often the deciding factor between candidates with similar aptitude scores. Aspirants who consistently read financial newspapers, track RBI policy announcements, and stay updated on government economic initiatives score significantly higher in this section. The 6-month current affairs window before the Mains is the standard coverage period.
SBI introduced several significant changes in the 2025 examination that are expected to continue in 2026:
Many aspirants prepare extensively for the written stages and underestimate Phase III. The Group Exercise and Interview together carry 50 marks, which is normalised to 25% of the final merit. Given the compressed final cutoff ranges, Phase III performance can determine selection or non-selection.
The Group Exercise typically involves a discussion among 8 to 12 candidates on a given topic - usually a current affairs issue, a banking-related policy question, or a social dilemma. Evaluation focuses on communication clarity, logical argumentation, listening ability, leadership emergence without aggression, and the ability to move the group toward a consensus.
The Personal Interview at SBI PO is conducted by a panel of senior bank officials. It covers:
Preparation for the interview must include thorough reading of the Economic Survey, Union Budget highlights, RBI Annual Report, and awareness of SBI's own financials, recent initiatives, and strategic priorities.
For exam-specific interview preparation guidance, visit the SBI PO Interview and Group Exercise page.
Aspirants often compare SBI PO with IBPS PO, RBI Grade B, and RRB Officer Scale-I. Understanding the key differences helps candidates prioritise their preparation calendar.
SBI PO offers the highest entry-level salary among all public sector bank PO examinations. The starting in-hand salary of Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 85,000 per month compares favourably with IBPS PO's approximately Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 55,000 in hand at the same career stage.
The examination pattern is more demanding than IBPS PO, particularly in the Mains stage where sectional cutoffs, a high-stakes Descriptive Test, and the Group Exercise add layers of assessment that IBPS PO does not have.
RBI Grade B, while carrying higher intellectual prestige, is a significantly different examination covering Economics, Finance, and Management at a postgraduate academic level. SBI PO preparation and RBI Grade B preparation share some overlap in current affairs and basic economics but diverge sharply in depth and subject coverage.
Is SBI PO Prelims marks counted in the final merit? No. The Prelims is purely qualifying. Marks from Prelims are not added to the final score. Only Mains marks (75% weightage) and Phase III Group Exercise and Interview marks (25% weightage) determine the final merit.
How many vacancies does SBI PO typically announce? Vacancies have ranged from 541 (2025) to 2,056 (2021) in recent years. The 2026 vacancy count will be confirmed in the official notification. Based on trends, the expected range is 500 to 900 posts.
What is the minimum score needed to clear SBI PO Prelims? In 2025, the General category cutoff was 66.75 out of 100. Targeting 75 or above in Prelims provides a comfortable buffer, especially given that paper difficulty varies across shifts.
Can a final-year graduation student apply for SBI PO? Yes. Final-year students can apply provisionally. However, they must present their degree certificate before the interview stage. Failure to produce the document results in disqualification.
What is the service bond amount for SBI PO? Selected candidates must sign a bond of Rs. 2 lakh at the time of joining, committing to serve the bank for at least three years. The bond is invoked if the candidate resigns before completing three years.
Is there a sectional cutoff in SBI PO Prelims? No. The Prelims has only an overall cutoff with no sectional cutoff. However, the Mains does have sectional cutoffs for all objective sections.
The SBI PO examination demands months of structured effort, but the return on that effort - in terms of salary, career trajectory, institutional prestige, and job security - makes it one of the most rewarding competitive examinations in India's banking sector. Use every resource available, prepare systematically, and set a clear target score well above the historical cutoff range for your category.
