Eligibility verification is the first and most non-negotiable step before applying for the SBI Probationary Officer examination. Candidates who apply without meeting eligibility conditions risk disqualification at any stage - including after clearing all written tests and the interview. Since eligibility documents are verified thoroughly during the appointment process, any mismatch discovered even after provisional selection leads to cancellation of candidature.
This page covers every eligibility condition for SBI PO 2026 in full detail: nationality, age limits and relaxations, educational qualifications, attempt limits, and special provisions for various categories.
For the complete examination overview, visit the SBI PO main page.
Before going into the details, here is a quick-reference summary:
The primary requirement is Indian citizenship. However, SBI PO also allows certain other categories of candidates as per government rules:
A subject of Nepal or Bhutan may apply for SBI PO.
A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India is also eligible.
A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India may also apply.
For categories other than Indian citizens, a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India is required at the time of interview. Without this certificate, the candidature is not processed to the final stages.
The age limit for SBI PO 2026 requires candidates to be a minimum of 21 years and a maximum of 30 years of age. Age is typically calculated as on 1st April of the application year. For the 2026 cycle, this means candidates must have been born not earlier than 2nd April 1996 and not later than 1st April 2005.
Both dates are inclusive, meaning a candidate born on 2nd April 1996 or 1st April 2005 falls within eligibility.
SBI provides age relaxation as per government guidelines to candidates from reserved and specified categories:
SC and ST candidates receive 5 years of relaxation, allowing them to apply up to 35 years of age.
OBC candidates (Non-Creamy Layer only) receive 3 years of relaxation, allowing them to apply up to 33 years of age. Candidates who fall within the OBC creamy layer are treated as General/EWS and receive no OBC relaxation.
PwBD (Persons with Benchmark Disability) candidates receive 10 years of relaxation regardless of category, with additional layer relaxation as follows:
Ex-Servicemen receive relaxation of 5 years over and above the maximum age limit applicable for their category. This means an ex-serviceman from the General category can apply up to 35 years of age, and from SC/ST up to 40 years. The relaxation for ex-servicemen is in addition to any other relaxation applicable to them.
Widows, Divorced Women, and Women Judicially Separated who are not remarried receive age relaxation up to the age of 35 for General/EWS and 38 for SC/ST candidates (40 for OBC). This provision applies to all such candidates regardless of whether they fall in any other relaxation category.
Candidates who were domiciled in Jammu and Kashmir between 1 January 1980 and 31 December 1989 receive 5 years of age relaxation.
Age must be supported by the date of birth as recorded in the Class 10 or SSC certificate. SBI does not accept any other document as primary age proof. Candidates who have cleared their Board exam but whose certificate shows a date of birth different from what they have declared in the application must correct this before applying, as any discrepancy is grounds for rejection.
The educational qualification requirement for SBI PO is broad and inclusive. SBI specifies that candidates must hold a graduation degree in any discipline from a University recognised by the Government of India, or possess an equivalent qualification.
A Bachelor's degree in any discipline qualifies - Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering, Technology, Law, Medicine, Agriculture, or any other field. SBI does not prescribe any minimum percentage in graduation.
Candidates with a degree from an Open University (such as IGNOU) or through distance learning mode are eligible, provided the university is recognised by the University Grants Commission or the relevant statutory body.
CA (Chartered Accountant) qualification is also specified as eligible for SBI PO, even without a formal graduation degree. This is an exception that allows CA holders who may not have completed a conventional university degree to apply.
Integrated Dual Degree (IDD) holders are eligible, but the date of passing the IDD must match the notification's cut-off date. Candidates must ensure that their IDD completion date falls before the application deadline (or the interview date as specified in the notification).
Candidates appearing in the final year or final semester of their graduation are allowed to apply for SBI PO Prelims on a provisional basis. However, SBI requires that such candidates:
This provision is generous and allows students who are completing their degree to participate in the Prelims and Mains while awaiting results. However, it must be understood clearly: the degree must be completed before the interview, not merely before the Mains. If results are delayed, candidates risk being unable to produce the required documentation.
SBI does not prescribe a minimum percentage in graduation. A candidate who has passed their degree with any marks - even the bare minimum for passing - meets the educational qualification criteria for SBI PO. This is consistent with most public sector bank PO examinations.
The SBI PO attempt limit is one of the most misunderstood aspects of eligibility. SBI's counting of attempts is fundamentally different from examinations like UPSC CSE.
The critical rule is: an attempt is counted from the Mains examination, not from Prelims.
This means a candidate who appears in the SBI PO Prelims but is not shortlisted for Mains has not used an attempt. Only candidates who appear in the Mains examination have consumed one attempt.
The counting of attempts began from the SBI PO Mains examination held on 18th April 2010. All Mains examinations from that date onwards are included in the attempt count.
General and EWS candidates are allowed a maximum of 4 attempts at the SBI PO Mains examination.
OBC candidates (Non-Creamy Layer) are allowed a maximum of 7 attempts.
SC and ST candidates have no limit on the number of attempts, subject only to the age ceiling.
PwBD candidates receive the same relaxation in attempt limits as applicable to their category (OBC PwBD gets 7 attempts; SC/ST PwBD unlimited).
A General category candidate who has appeared in SBI PO Mains four times is no longer eligible. Even if they are within the age limit, the attempt ceiling prevents further applications.
Candidates should maintain an accurate count of every year in which they appeared in the SBI PO Mains from 2010 onwards. This is especially important for candidates who appeared in multiple years between 2010 and 2018 when vacancy numbers were higher and competition was different.
One common error is confusing IBPS PO Mains appearances with SBI PO attempts. IBPS PO and SBI PO are separate examinations conducted by separate bodies. Appearing in IBPS PO Mains does not consume an SBI PO attempt, and vice versa.
SBI requires all selected candidates to be in good health. At the time of joining, candidates undergo a medical examination to confirm they meet the fitness standards required for the role. There is no specific height, weight, or vision standard prescribed for SBI PO as there is for some other government positions. The medical examination evaluates general fitness to perform the duties of a bank officer.
Candidates with any pre-existing medical conditions should consult with a physician regarding whether their condition might affect the bank's medical clearance before investing years in preparation.
Persons with Benchmark Disability are entitled to horizontal reservation in SBI PO. The reservation percentage is 4% of total vacancies, applicable across all categories.
The disabilities covered under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 for this purpose include:
PwBD candidates must produce a valid disability certificate from a Competent Medical Authority as specified by the government. The certificate must clearly state the nature and percentage of disability. SBI specifies that PwBD candidates must be able to perform the functions associated with the post of Probationary Officer with or without reasonable accommodations.
Scribe facility is available for PwBD candidates with specific disabilities (blindness, low vision, or locomotor disability affecting writing ability) upon request during application. Details of the scribe policy, including qualification restrictions for the scribe, are specified in each year's official notification. Candidates requiring a scribe must indicate this in the application form. No scribe facility is provided at the examination hall without prior registration in the application.
Extra time of 20 minutes per hour is granted to eligible PwBD candidates. For a one-hour Prelims paper, this amounts to 20 additional minutes. For the three-hour Mains Objective Test, this amounts to 60 additional minutes.
Economically Weaker Section reservation is applicable to candidates from the General category whose family gross annual income is below Rs. 8 lakh from all sources. The EWS criterion also requires that the family must not own:
EWS candidates must produce an Income and Asset Certificate issued by a Competent Authority in the prescribed format. The certificate must be for the financial year preceding the year of application. Certificates from earlier financial years are not accepted.
EWS candidates who meet the income and asset criteria but belong to OBC, SC, or ST categories are not eligible for EWS reservation. EWS is exclusively for candidates from the General (unreserved) category.
SBI organises Pre-Examination Training (PET) for candidates belonging to SC, ST, and minority communities. This is a government-mandated initiative to provide free coaching to candidates from these groups who cannot afford private coaching.
Key details about Pre-Exam Training:
Pre-Exam Training does not grant any marks or preference in the selection process. It is purely a preparation support initiative.
Several eligibility errors consistently cause problems for candidates who otherwise meet the basic requirements:
Using a state OBC certificate for central government recruitment: SBI PO, like all central government recruitments, requires the OBC certificate to be from the Central List of OBCs as maintained by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, not just any state government OBC certificate. A state OBC certificate that is not aligned with the Central List is not valid for SBI PO.
Calculating age incorrectly: Age must be calculated as on the specific cut-off date mentioned in the notification (typically 1st April of the application year). Candidates who use their current age at the time of applying rather than calculating it as on the specified date may miscalculate their eligibility.
Confusing Mains attempts with Prelims appearances: As explained above, only Mains appearances count toward the attempt limit. Appearing in Prelims 10 times without qualifying for Mains leaves a candidate with zero attempts counted.
Applying on provisional basis without completing graduation in time: Final-year students who apply on a provisional basis must ensure they complete their degree and obtain results before the interview date. The banking recruitment calendar moves quickly after Mains, and delays in university results have affected candidates in previous cycles.
Before submitting the SBI PO application, verify the following:
If all five conditions are satisfied, proceed with the application. For detailed application steps, visit the SBI PO Application Process page.
Does a pass in Prelims count as one attempt toward the SBI PO attempt limit? No. Appearing in Prelims alone does not count as an attempt. Only appearing in the Mains examination is counted as one attempt, regardless of whether the candidate qualified the Mains or not.
I appeared in SBI PO Mains in 2020, 2021, and 2022 as a General category candidate. Can I apply in 2026? You have used three of your four permitted attempts as a General category candidate. You can apply for the 2026 cycle, which would be your fourth and final attempt. After this, you would exhaust the attempt limit.
Is there a minimum percentage required in graduation for SBI PO? No. SBI PO has no minimum percentage requirement. Candidates who have passed their graduation with any marks from a recognised university are eligible.
Can a candidate with a B.Tech degree apply for SBI PO? Yes. Any Bachelor's degree qualifies, including B.Tech, B.E., B.Com, B.A., B.Sc., LLB, MBBS, or any equivalent degree. The discipline of the degree does not restrict eligibility.
What is the minimum disability percentage required for PwBD reservation in SBI PO? As per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, a minimum of 40% disability is required to be classified as a Persons with Benchmark Disability. The disability certificate must confirm at least 40% disability in the specified categories to avail reservation benefits.
Understanding eligibility conditions thoroughly before applying prevents not just application errors but the far more painful experience of disqualification at the interview or appointment stage after months of preparation and multiple examination stages.
