The SBI PO application process is the formal entry point to one of India's most competitive banking examinations. Every year, over six lakh candidates submit their applications for a few hundred vacancies at the State Bank of India, and a significant number face preventable issues - wrong document formats, missed deadlines, failed payments, or incorrect personal details - that create complications at later stages of the selection process. Getting the application right is not just a formality; it is the first test of a candidate's attention to detail, which is a quality the bank values in a Probationary Officer.
The entire SBI PO application process is conducted exclusively online through the official SBI careers portal at sbi.co.in. No offline applications, no third-party portals, and no postal submissions are accepted under any circumstances. This page covers every step of the process in detail, from the initial registration to fee payment and final submission, along with the document specifications, common mistakes, and what to do if an error is discovered after submission.
Before applying, verify your eligibility by checking the SBI PO Eligibility Criteria page. For the complete examination overview, visit the SBI PO main page.
The SBI PO application window for 2026 is expected to open alongside the official notification in June 2026. Based on the 2025 cycle as reference:
| Event 2025 Dates (Reference) Expected 2026 | ||
| Notification Release | 24 June 2025 | June 2026 |
| Application Window Opens | 24 June 2025 | June 2026 |
| Application Last Date | 14 July 2025 | Approximately 3 weeks after notification |
| Fee Payment Last Date | Same as application deadline | Same |
| Prelims Admit Card | Late July 2025 | Late July 2026 |
| Prelims Examination | 4-5 August 2025 | 1-2 August 2026 (tentative) |
The application window is short - typically 21 days. Candidates who plan to apply should keep their documents, photographs, and credentials ready before the notification drops so they can submit within the first few days of the window opening.
All applications must be submitted through the official SBI careers portal. The direct path is:
sbi.co.in → Careers → Current Openings → SBI PO 2026 Recruitment → Apply Online
Do not submit applications through coaching institute portals, third-party websites, or any link received via WhatsApp, email, or social media, even if it appears to be from SBI. The only legitimate application link is the one available directly on sbi.co.in. Fraudulent application portals appear every year during the SBI PO recruitment window.
Bookmark the official SBI careers page and monitor it from mid-May 2026 onwards so the notification release does not catch you unprepared.
Before opening the application form, keep the following ready to avoid interruptions during the process:
Photograph specifications:
Signature specifications:
Left Thumb Impression specifications:
Handwritten Declaration: The handwritten declaration is a mandatory upload from the 2025 cycle onwards. The exact text, as specified in the official notification, reads:
"I, ________ (Name of the candidate), ________ (Date of Birth), hereby declare that all the information submitted by me in the application form is correct, true, and valid. I will present the supporting documents as and when required. The signature, photograph, and left-hand thumb impression are mine."
This must be written by hand (not typed or computer-generated) using blue or black ink, on plain white paper, in English. Scan it clearly and upload in JPG/JPEG format within the specified file size.
Other documents to keep ready:
Visit sbi.co.in and navigate to the SBI PO 2026 application link under Current Openings. Click "New Registration" on the application portal.
On the registration page, enter:
After entering these details and clicking Save, the system generates a Registration ID and Password. These are sent to your registered email and mobile number via SMS and email. Save these immediately. They are your permanent login credentials for this recruitment cycle.
Important: The name entered at registration must exactly match the name on your educational certificates. Even a difference of one letter or the inclusion/exclusion of a middle name creates complications at document verification. Do not abbreviate or shorten your name.
After registration, the portal prompts for photograph and signature upload. Upload both in the specifications listed above. The portal typically shows a preview of the uploaded images. Verify that:
If either image does not meet specifications, the portal will reject the upload with an error message. Correct the file and re-upload before proceeding.
Log in using the Registration ID and Password received. The application form is structured in multiple parts. Part 1 captures:
Accuracy is critical in the category field. Selecting the wrong category (for example, General instead of OBC, or OBC instead of SC) cannot typically be corrected after submission. If you belong to OBC, ensure your certificate is from the Central List and is valid for central government recruitment before selecting OBC.
After filling Part 1, click "Save and Next" to proceed.
Part 2 covers:
After the main form is filled, upload the left thumb impression and the handwritten declaration as per the specifications. These are verified during biometric checks at the exam centre and at later recruitment stages.
Before final submission, the portal displays a complete preview of all entered information. This is the last opportunity to verify every field. Check:
Do not rush through the preview. A 5-minute verification at this stage prevents months of complications later.
After reviewing the preview, tick the declaration box confirming that all information provided is true and correct. Click the Submit button. After successful submission:
Download and save the application confirmation page as a PDF. Print at least one copy. This serves as proof of application submission and is needed for reference throughout the recruitment cycle.
After form submission, the portal redirects to the payment gateway. Application fee payment is mandatory for General, OBC, and EWS category candidates. SC, ST, and PwBD candidates are exempt.
| Category Application Fee | |
| General | Rs. 750 |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | Rs. 750 |
| EWS | Rs. 750 |
| SC | Nil |
| ST | Nil |
| PwBD (all categories) | Nil |
Payment methods accepted:
After successful payment, a payment receipt is generated. Download and save this receipt. The application status on the portal will update to "PAID" - confirm this before closing the browser.
The application fee is non-refundable under all circumstances, including if the notification is cancelled, the exam is postponed, or the candidate becomes ineligible after payment. Pay carefully only after confirming all details are correct.
If payment fails but the amount is debited from your account, wait 48 to 72 hours for automatic reversal. Do not make a duplicate payment before the reversal is confirmed. If the amount is not reversed, contact your bank with the transaction reference number.
After fee payment, the portal makes the filled application form available for download as a PDF. Download and print this document. The printed application form is required at the Mains exam centre along with the Prelims admit card.
SBI typically does not provide a formal correction window for the PO application, unlike UPSC which offers a dedicated correction window. Once the application is submitted and the fee is paid, changes are generally not permitted.
However, if SBI does open a modification facility in a given year, the notification will mention this explicitly. Based on historical practice, modifications are limited to a maximum of 3 changes in personal details through the portal login. Core details such as name, date of birth, and category are unlikely to be modifiable even in modification windows.
This makes the pre-submission review at Step 6 critically important. Approach it with the seriousness of checking a legal document before signing.
The Prelims admit card is released approximately 2 weeks before the examination date. For 2025, the Prelims was on 4-5 August and the admit card was released in late July. For 2026, expect the Prelims admit card in mid-to-late July 2026.
To download the admit card:
Verify the following details on the admit card immediately after download:
If any detail is incorrect, contact SBI's official helpline immediately. Do not arrive at the exam centre with an incorrect admit card hoping it will be resolved there.
Name mismatch: The name entered in the application must exactly match the graduation certificate. Many candidates write their name differently across documents (e.g., "Rahul K. Sharma" in application vs "Rahul Kumar Sharma" in certificate). Verify your graduation certificate name before typing in the form.
Wrong category selection: OBC candidates sometimes confuse state OBC lists with the central OBC list. For SBI PO, the OBC certificate must be from the Central List as per the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Using a state OBC certificate not aligned with the Central List leads to disqualification during document verification.
Photograph without white background: Some candidates upload photos with coloured or blurred backgrounds. The bank's verification system catches this, and the application is flagged.
Typed handwritten declaration: Some candidates type the declaration and upload a printout. SBI specifically requires it to be handwritten. A typed declaration will be rejected.
Signature in capital letters: The signature uploaded must be in cursive or natural handwriting. Signatures written in block capitals are not accepted. SBI verifies the signature against the one collected at the exam centre, and capital-letter signatures are flagged as irregular.
Fee paid but form status not "PAID": After payment, always verify the application status shows "PAID" before closing the session. If it shows "Payment Pending" despite money being debited, wait 24 hours and recheck. If unresolved, contact SBI helpline with the transaction ID.
Applying too late: Popular exam centres close their capacity within the first 2 to 3 days of the application window. Candidates who apply in the final week of the window risk being assigned to a distant city. Apply within the first 48 hours of the window opening.
Once the application is successfully submitted:
Can I submit the SBI PO application offline? No. The application process is entirely online at sbi.co.in. There is no offline application mode.
What happens if I submit the application form twice? Multiple applications from the same candidate lead to cancellation of all applications. Submit only one application per recruitment cycle.
Can I apply without paying the fee? For General, OBC, and EWS category candidates, the application is not complete without fee payment. Submission without payment results in the application being treated as incomplete and not processed. SC, ST, and PwBD candidates are exempt from fee payment but must still submit the form.
I made a mistake in my educational qualification details. Can I correct it? SBI generally does not offer a formal correction window. If a modification facility is provided in the current year's cycle, it will be announced on the official portal. Otherwise, minor discrepancies between the form and original documents are evaluated at the document verification stage. Significant errors may lead to disqualification.
Is the handwritten declaration required even for reserved category candidates? Yes. The handwritten declaration is mandatory for all candidates regardless of category.
What should I do if my photograph is rejected during upload? Correct the photograph to meet the specified size, background, and format requirements and re-upload. The portal allows re-uploads before the form is submitted. Ensure the photo is JPG/JPEG format, within the size limit, with white background and clear face visibility.
Can I change my exam centre preference after submission? Generally no. SBI PO does not offer centre change requests post-submission. This makes it essential to carefully enter your preferred centre during the initial form filling.
The SBI PO application process, when approached carefully and completed early, is straightforward. The complications that candidates face are almost always due to rushing through the form, ignoring specifications, or applying too close to the deadline. Treat the application with the same diligence you bring to your preparation and every subsequent stage of the selection process.
