All the months of preparation, the mock tests, the revision sessions, and the strategy building ultimately come down to how a candidate performs in two specific windows: the 60-minute Prelims and, if they qualify, the 210-minute Mains. Exam-day logistics and compliance with the bank's rules are not secondary considerations - they determine whether a candidate even gets to sit for the paper. Arriving late, carrying a prohibited item, failing to bring a required document, or not knowing the computer-based test protocols are operational failures that no amount of subject knowledge can compensate for.
This page covers every exam-day requirement for the SBI PO 2026 examination in precise detail: documents, reporting time, shift structure, what to carry, what not to carry, protocols inside the exam hall, and what to do between shifts and after the paper.
For the complete examination guide, visit the SBI PO main page. For the exam pattern structure, see the SBI PO Exam Pattern page.
Based on the 2025 pattern:
| Stage Expected Date Shift Structure | ||
| Prelims | 1st and 2nd August 2026 (tentative) | 4 shifts per day (approx. 9 AM, 11:30 AM, 2 PM, 4:30 PM) |
| Mains | 12th September 2026 (tentative) | Single shift |
| Phase III - Psychometric Test | November 2026 (tentative) | Centre-specific |
| Phase III - Group Exercise and Interview | November to December 2026 (tentative) | Centre-specific |
Each candidate's specific exam date, shift, and reporting time are printed on the admit card. The admit card is the primary reference document for all exam-day planning.
Punctuality at the SBI PO examination centre is non-negotiable. Latecomers are refused entry without exception, regardless of the reason given.
For Prelims:
For Mains (single shift):
Plan your commute the day before. If the exam centre is unfamiliar, visit the location a day in advance to confirm the route, travel time, and parking. Add at least 20 minutes to your planned commute time for exam-day traffic.
The following documents are mandatory for entry at the SBI PO examination centre. Missing any of these can result in denial of entry.
The admit card must be printed in advance on A4-size white paper with all details clearly legible. Digital copies of the admit card on mobile phones, tablets, or laptops are not accepted.
On the printed admit card:
Bring glue or adhesive to paste the photograph onto the admit card if you have not done so before arriving.
Two additional passport-size photographs (identical to the one uploaded during application) must be carried:
These photographs must be recent, clear, and identical to the application photo in terms of pose, background, and appearance.
A valid original government-issued photo identity document is required for entry. Accepted IDs include:
A photocopy of the identity document must also be carried and stapled to the admit card. Both the original and the photocopy are verified at entry.
Not accepted: Ration card, learner's driving licence, or any document without a photograph.
Candidates must carry a blue or black ink stamp pad for the left thumb impression to be taken on the admit card and attendance sheet at the exam centre. SBI does not provide ink pads at the examination centre.
Carry at least two ballpoint pens - black or blue ink. These are used for signing documents and the attendance sheet at the exam centre. The SBI PO Prelims and Mains are computer-based tests, so pens are not used for answering questions, but they are required for signing the admit card, attendance register, and any declaration forms.
Candidates availing the PwBD facility must carry:
Both documents are verified at the exam centre before the candidate is allowed entry.
A transparent water bottle without any labels, stickers, or opaque sections is permitted at most SBI PO centres. Opaque or labelled bottles may be disallowed during security checks.
SBI enforces a strict prohibition on all electronic and communication devices inside the examination hall. Being found with any prohibited item - even if it is switched off - can lead to immediate cancellation of candidature and potential debarment from future SBI and banking examinations.
| Prohibited Category Specific Items | |
| Electronic devices | Mobile phones (regardless of whether switched off), smartwatches, digital watches, Bluetooth earphones, wireless earbuds, pagers |
| Calculation devices | Calculators (handheld or app-based), abacus |
| Communication devices | Walkie-talkies, any networked or wireless device |
| Study material | Books, notebooks, printed notes, rough papers, photocopied materials |
| Stationery | Rulers, pencil cases, correction fluid, geometry sets |
| Personal items | Handbags, purses, non-transparent pouches |
| Food items | Packed meals, snacks (transparent water bottle permitted in most centres) |
Mobile phones deserve special emphasis. SBI's official instructions explicitly prohibit mobile phones inside the examination premises, even if they are switched off and placed in a bag. Most examination centres do not provide secure storage for mobile phones. Leave your phone at home or in your vehicle. The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024 has increased the legal consequences of exam misconduct, including possession of electronic devices.
SBI conducts biometric verification at the examination centre for all candidates. This includes:
Photo capture: A photograph is taken at the exam centre using a webcam or camera system. This photo is digitally matched with the photograph uploaded during the application. If the photos do not match, the candidate's entry is questioned and may be denied.
Signature verification: The candidate signs in front of the invigilator. This signature is compared against the one uploaded during the application. Signatures must match. Signatures in capital letters are not accepted and are flagged as irregular.
Thumb impression: The left thumb impression is taken at the centre and recorded against the one uploaded during the application.
These three biometric checks create a complete identity verification record. Any discrepancy between the application uploads and the physical presentation at the centre is treated as a potential fraud and investigated accordingly.
SBI PO Prelims and Mains are both computer-based tests (CBTs). The examination is conducted on desktop computers with a dedicated testing software interface. Understanding the CBT environment before exam day prevents confusion and wasted time during the actual paper.
Seating: Each candidate is assigned a specific computer terminal. The terminal number is typically mentioned on the admit card or assigned at the centre. Do not attempt to change your assigned terminal.
System check: At the start of the session, the testing software displays the candidate's name, photograph, and exam details for verification. Confirm that these match your details before the exam begins.
Navigating questions: The interface allows candidates to move between questions within a section, mark questions for review, and change answers before final submission. Use the "Mark for Review" feature for questions you want to revisit, but never leave this as a substitute for final submission.
Sectional time limits: The software enforces the sectional time limits automatically. When 20 minutes for one section are up in Prelims, the software locks that section and automatically moves to the next section. Candidates cannot return to a locked section under any circumstances. This is a critical operational difference from paper-based exams - there is no way to go back.
Rough sheets: Physical rough sheets are provided at the computer terminal for calculations and note-taking during the Mains Quantitative and Reasoning sections. All rough sheets must be submitted to the invigilator before leaving the hall. Candidates who take rough sheets out of the hall face disciplinary action.
Technical issues: If a computer malfunctions during the exam, raise your hand and inform the invigilator immediately. Do not attempt to restart or troubleshoot the computer yourself. The invigilator will either resolve the issue or transfer the candidate to a spare terminal. Any time lost due to technical failure on the centre's part is typically compensated.
The SBI PO Prelims is conducted across multiple shifts each day. Based on the 2025 pattern:
| Shift Exam Start Gate Closing Recommended Arrival | |||
| Shift 1 | 9:00 AM | 8:45 AM | 7:45 to 8:00 AM |
| Shift 2 | 11:30 AM | 11:15 AM | 10:15 to 10:30 AM |
| Shift 3 | 2:00 PM | 1:45 PM | 12:45 to 1:00 PM |
| Shift 4 | 4:30 PM | 4:15 PM | 3:15 to 3:30 PM |
Exact shift timings for 2026 will be printed on each candidate's admit card. The times above reflect the 2025 pattern and may vary slightly. Always refer to the admit card for the confirmed reporting time.
Inside the examination hall, the following rules govern conduct throughout the session:
If you qualify the Prelims, the Mains is held approximately 5 to 6 weeks later. The Mains admit card is released 2 weeks before the Mains date and is downloaded through the same portal. For the Mains:
A critical preparation note for the period between Prelims result and Mains: Begin Mains preparation immediately after the Prelims examination, not after the result. The result is out within 2 to 3 weeks, and the Mains follows 5 to 6 weeks after that. Waiting for the result to start Mains preparation leaves only 2 to 3 weeks for a significantly more demanding examination.
Immediately after the Prelims examination:
Do not discuss answers in groups at the centre. Exit calmly. Group discussions about which answers were correct create anxiety, particularly when candidates hear different choices from others. Since SBI PO is a computer-based test and the software records your answers at the time of submission, nothing can be changed post-exam.
Retain your admit card. The stamped Prelims admit card must be preserved. It is required at the Mains centre for verification and is a proof of examination appearance for any official purpose.
Track the result date. The Prelims result is typically announced within 2 to 3 weeks of the examination. Monitor sbi.co.in regularly. For details on how to check your result and what happens next, see the SBI PO Result page.
Begin Mains preparation. Refocus immediately. The gap between Prelims and Mains is short. Candidates who spent weeks before the Prelims preparing for both Prelims and Mains simultaneously are the ones who clear Mains with strong scores. If Mains preparation has not begun, start the day after your Prelims examination.
Evening before the exam:
Morning of the exam:
Is a digital admit card on mobile phone accepted at the SBI PO centre? No. A printed copy of the admit card is mandatory. Digital copies on mobile phones or laptops are not accepted. Print the admit card on A4-size white paper with all details clearly visible.
What if I forget to carry the ink stamp pad? The ink stamp pad is required for the left thumb impression on the admit card and attendance sheet. Some centres may have provisions for this, but it is not guaranteed. Carry your own blue or black ink stamp pad to avoid any complications.
Can I carry a calculator to the SBI PO exam? No. Calculators of any type - handheld, digital, or app-based on any device - are strictly prohibited. All calculations during the Mains must be done mentally or on the rough sheets provided.
What happens if there is a power cut or technical failure during the computer-based test? Technical issues are handled by the exam centre staff. Inform the invigilator immediately. SBI has provisions for addressing technical disruptions, including time compensation or use of spare terminals. Do not attempt to restart or troubleshoot the computer yourself.
Can I leave the hall during the exam? Candidates may not leave the hall during the examination session except in a genuine emergency and only with invigilator permission. No additional time is provided for time spent outside the hall.
Is food allowed inside the SBI PO exam centre? Generally, no food items are permitted inside the examination hall. A transparent water bottle is typically allowed. Check your admit card for any specific instructions about your examination centre.
The examination day is the culmination of all the effort invested in preparation. Treating the operational aspects of the day - documents, timing, prohibited items, CBT protocols - with the same seriousness as the academic preparation ensures that logistics never become the reason a well-prepared candidate underperforms or is turned away.
