JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination Main) is India's most competitive national-level undergraduate engineering entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It serves as the gateway for admission to Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.), Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech), Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch), and Bachelor of Planning (B.Planning) programmes offered by NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and other centrally funded technical institutions across the country.
JEE Main also acts as the qualifying examination for JEE Advanced, which is the entrance test for admission to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Only the top 2,50,000 candidates who qualify JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.
For JEE Main 2027, the National Testing Agency is expected to conduct the examination in two sessions: Session 1 in January 2027 and Session 2 in April 2027, following the established pattern from 2025 and 2026. The official notification, registration dates, and exam schedule will be published on the NTA official portal at jeemain.nta.nic.in.
Note: All dates and figures related to JEE Main 2027 mentioned in this article are based on established NTA patterns from 2025 and 2026. Candidates must verify all information from the official NTA notification once released.

With over 15 lakh candidates appearing for JEE Main each year, disciplined preparation from Class 11 is the only path to securing a top rank. The following strategy is designed for candidates targeting JEE Main 2027.
Physics Focus heavily on Mechanics, Electromagnetism, and Modern Physics as these chapters carry the highest weightage in JEE Main Paper 1. Use HC Verma Volumes 1 and 2 for conceptual understanding and DC Pandey for practice. Practice Numerical Value Questions (NVQs) daily since all 5 NVQs in Section B are compulsory.
Chemistry Divide your preparation time equally among Physical Chemistry (formula and calculation-based), Organic Chemistry (mechanism-based), and Inorganic Chemistry (NCERT-based memory work). NCERT is non-negotiable for Inorganic Chemistry, especially p-Block and d-f Block elements.
Mathematics Prioritise Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, and Algebra as these sections account for the majority of the weightage. RD Sharma and Cengage are recommended for practice. Focus on speed and accuracy since Mathematics is often the differentiating subject in JEE Main.
| Subject Book Author | ||
| Physics | Concepts of Physics Vol. 1 and 2 | HC Verma |
| Physics | Problems in General Physics | I.E. Irodov |
| Chemistry | NCERT Chemistry (Class 11 and 12) | NCERT |
| Chemistry | Physical Chemistry | O.P. Tandon |
| Mathematics | Mathematics for Class 11 and 12 | R.D. Sharma |
| Mathematics | Coordinate Geometry | S.L. Loney |
| Phase Timeline Focus | ||
| Foundation Phase | May 2025 to September 2025 | Complete Class 11 NCERT syllabus for all three subjects |
| Advanced Phase | October 2025 to March 2026 | Complete Class 12 syllabus, begin reference book practice |
| Integration Phase | April 2026 to September 2026 | Combine Class 11 and 12 revision, topic-wise mock tests |
| Mock Test Phase | October 2026 to December 2026 | Full-length mock tests 3 to 4 times per week, error analysis |
| Final Revision | January 2027 | Short notes revision, formula sheets, past papers |
Practice with our JEE Main Test Series to simulate real exam conditions.
Solving previous year question papers is the single most effective strategy for cracking JEE Main. PYQs help you understand NTA's question pattern, difficulty level, and the type of concepts tested repeatedly.
Analysis of JEE Main papers from 2019 to 2026 shows that approximately 20 to 30 percent of questions in every session are either direct repeats or conceptually similar to questions asked in earlier years. Candidates who solve at least 10 years of PYQs with detailed analysis consistently outperform those who only practice from textbooks.
| Subject High-Repeat Topics | |
| Physics | Rotational Motion, Current Electricity, Wave Optics, Magnetic Effects |
| Chemistry | Mole Concept, Organic Reactions (Aldehyde/Ketone), Coordination Compounds, Periodic Properties |
| Mathematics | Integration, Matrices, Complex Numbers, Probability, 3D Geometry |
Access year-wise and chapter-wise solved PYQs on the JEE Main PYQ page.
Being well-prepared for exam day logistics is as important as academic preparation. Missing the reporting time or forgetting required documents can result in denial of entry.
| Required Documents Details | |
| JEE Main Admit Card 2027 | Printed copy (coloured or black-and-white) |
| Valid Photo ID Proof | Aadhaar Card, Passport, Voter ID, PAN Card, or Driving Licence |
| Passport-size Photographs | 2 recent photographs matching the uploaded photo |
| PwD Certificate | For candidates claiming PwD benefit |
Candidates must report to the examination centre at least 30 minutes before the shift reporting time. No electronic devices, including mobile phones, calculators, and smartwatches, are permitted inside the examination hall. Rough work must be done only on the sheet provided inside the exam hall. Candidates must sign the attendance sheet and paste their photograph as instructed by the invigilator.
For a complete checklist and centre-specific instructions, visit the JEE Main Exam Day Guidance page.
The JEE Main 2027 result will be declared by NTA separately for Session 1 and Session 2. The Session 2 result will carry the final combined NTA score, which is used for JEE Advanced eligibility and JoSAA counselling.
| Detail on Scorecard Description | |
| NTA Score (Percentile) | Subject-wise and overall percentile |
| All India Rank (AIR) | Based on the best of two sessions |
| Category Rank | Rank within the candidate's reservation category |
| JEE Advanced Qualification Status | Eligible or Not Eligible |
JEE Main is conducted across multiple shifts and sessions. To ensure fairness, NTA uses a percentile-based normalisation method. The NTA Score represents the percentage of candidates who scored equal to or below a given candidate in that session and shift. The final All India Rank is assigned based on the best NTA score from both sessions.
For result links, scorecard download process, and post-result steps, visit the JEE Main Result page.
After each session and shift, detailed exam analysis helps candidates understand the difficulty level, topic distribution, and expected cutoff. JEE Main 2026 Session 1 and Session 2 analyses showed that Mathematics was moderately difficult to difficult, Physics was moderate, and Chemistry was the easiest paper in most shifts.
For shift-wise difficulty ratings, good attempts benchmarks, and topic-wise question distribution for past sessions, visit the JEE Main Exam Analysis page.
