The JEE Main application process is the gateway to appearing in the most competitive engineering entrance examination in India. A single error in the application form, a mismatched document, or a missed deadline can cost a candidate an entire year of preparation. This page walks you through the complete JEE Main 2027 registration process in step-by-step detail, covering every stage from new registration on jeemain.nta.nic.in to fee payment, document upload specifications, correction window rules, and the most common mistakes candidates make.
The JEE Main 2027 application process will be conducted entirely online by the National Testing Agency (NTA). There is no offline submission mode. Separate application windows will be available for Session 1 (expected October to November 2026) and Session 2 (expected February to March 2027).
All information on this page is based on the official JEE Main 2026 registration process as documented in the NTA Information Brochure and official communications. The 2027 process is expected to follow the same structure with possible minor changes that will be announced in the official brochure.
Official Portal: All JEE Main 2027 registration activities will take place exclusively at jeemain.nta.nic.in. Do not use any third-party website or agent to fill the application form.

Go to jeemain.nta.nic.in. On the homepage, click on the registration or apply link for JEE Main 2027 Session 1. Do not use any other portal.
Click on "New Candidate Registration" or "Fresh Registration." Read the complete instructions and declaration on the registration page before proceeding.
Details required at this stage:
After submitting these details, you will receive a system-generated Application Number and a Password on your registered mobile number and email ID. Save both immediately. The application number is your permanent login credential for all future JEE Main activities including admit card download, result access, and Session 2 registration.
In JEE Main 2026, NTA introduced Aadhaar-based auto-fill. The system fetches your name, date of birth, gender, and photograph directly from the UIDAI database using Aadhaar authentication. If your Aadhaar details differ from your Class 10 certificate, this may cause a mismatch. Resolve any Aadhaar discrepancy before registration begins.
Log in using your Application Number and Password. You will now be directed to the main application form. Fill all sections carefully.

Reservation and Category Details:
Important: The category selected during Session 1 cannot be changed for Session 2. Choose the correct category during initial registration. Changing from a reserved category to General will not result in a fee refund; changing from General to reserved may require additional fee payment depending on NTA rules.
All documents must be uploaded in the prescribed format and size. The NTA portal will reject files that do not meet specifications.

| Format | JPEG or JPG only |

| Live photo capture (introduced in 2026) | Captured via webcam or phone QR during registration | System-captured |
Live Photo Capture (New from 2026): NTA introduced real-time webcam or mobile QR photo capture during registration as an identity verification step. This is in addition to the uploaded photograph and is captured directly through the portal. Ensure you are in a well-lit area when completing this step.
After uploading all documents, you will be directed to the fee payment page. The payable fee will be displayed automatically based on your selected category, gender, paper choice, and exam centre location.
| Category Gender Paper 1 or 2 (One Paper) Both Papers | |||
| General / UR | Male | Rs. 1000 | Rs. 2000 |
| General / UR | Female | Rs. 800 | Rs. 1600 |
| General-EWS / OBC-NCL | Male | Rs. 900 | Rs. 1800 |
| General-EWS / OBC-NCL | Female | Rs. 800 | Rs. 1600 |
| SC / ST / PwD / Transgender | Male and Female | Rs. 500 | Rs. 1000 |
| Centres Outside India (All categories) | All | Rs. 5000 (approx.) | As applicable |
Fee is non-refundable under all circumstances. If a candidate registers for both papers and decides to appear in only one, NTA does not refund the fee for the unused paper. NTA does not offer fee refund for any reason including technical errors, eligibility cancellation, or session changes.
Critical Tip on Payment: Do not close the browser or refresh the page during payment processing. If a transaction fails or is stuck, wait at least 15 minutes before attempting again. Always check your bank account before retrying to avoid duplicate deductions. If a deduction occurs without a confirmation page, contact NTA helpdesk with the transaction ID.
After successful fee payment, the application form is submitted automatically. A confirmation page will appear on your screen.
Immediately after submission:
The confirmation page contains your application number, selected papers, exam city preferences, and fee payment details. It is required during counselling and document verification. Keep both digital and printed copies until the admission process is fully complete.
Candidates who appeared in Session 1 and wish to appear in Session 2 do not need to create a new account. They log in using the same Application Number and Password from Session 1 and complete only the steps that are new: exam city selection and fee payment for Session 2. Personal and academic details already filled in Session 1 are carried forward automatically.
Candidates who did NOT apply for Session 1 and are appearing in JEE Main for the first time in Session 2 must complete the full new registration process from Step 1.
NTA provides a short correction window after the registration deadline closes. This is the only opportunity to fix errors in the submitted application form. The correction window is typically open for 2 to 3 days.
| Field Editable in Correction Window | |
| Name spelling (minor corrections) | Yes (in some cases) |
| Parent or guardian name | Yes |
| Category (e.g., General to OBC-NCL) | Yes (additional fee may apply) |
| Gender | Limited (check NTA brochure) |
| Paper type (e.g., adding Paper 2) | Yes (additional fee required) |
| Medium of exam | Yes |
| Exam city preferences | Yes |
| Photograph or signature | Yes |
| Date of birth | Generally not editable |
| Mobile number and email ID | Generally not editable |
| Application number | Not editable |
What cannot be corrected: Core identity details like the application number, registered mobile number, and email ID cannot be changed after submission. The State Code of Eligibility is also locked in most cases. These details must be entered correctly during the initial registration.
Important for OBC-NCL and EWS candidates (from 2026 NTA advisory): Category certificates must be issued on or after April 1 of the year preceding the admission (for 2027 admissions, the certificate must be dated on or after April 1, 2026). If the certificate is not yet issued at the time of registration, upload a self-declaration form and produce the original certificate at the counselling stage.
This is the most common issue faced during Aadhaar-based registration. If your name appears differently in Aadhaar (e.g., initials expanded or contracted) compared to your Class 10 certificate, the portal may show a mismatch warning.
Solution: Close the pop-up that appears and re-enter your name exactly as it appears on your Aadhaar card. If the discrepancy is significant, update your Aadhaar at an Aadhaar centre before registration begins. If time does not permit, a notarised affidavit confirming both names refer to the same person is accepted during JoSAA document verification.
The portal shows "Invalid File Size" or rejects the upload.
Solution: Use free compression tools like TinyJPG or ILovePDF to reduce file size while maintaining image quality. For photographs, compress to below 200 KB. For signatures, compress to below 30 KB. Do not convert from PNG to JPEG using a screenshot method as it often fails to reduce file size adequately.
Your bank account shows a deduction but the NTA portal does not show payment confirmation.
Solution: Wait 24 hours before contacting NTA. Most failed transactions are reversed automatically within 5 to 7 working days. Do not attempt a fresh payment immediately. Contact NTA at jeemain@nta.ac.in with the transaction ID, bank statement screenshot, and your application number if the amount is not reversed within 7 days.
Solution: Use the "Forgot Application Number" or "Forgot Password" option on the NTA login page. You can recover your Application Number by entering your name, date of birth, and registered email. Password can be reset via OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
| Mistake Consequence How to Avoid | ||
| Wrong State Code of Eligibility | Loss of Home State quota for NITs | Enter the state where you completed Class 12, not domicile state |
| Wrong category selection | Loss of reservation benefit or disqualification | Verify category documents before selecting |
| Uploading a PNG or HEIC photograph | Upload rejection | Convert to JPEG before uploading |
| Entering name from Aadhaar differently | Mismatch and potential cancellation | Use Aadhaar auto-fill or enter name exactly as in Aadhaar |
| Not downloading the confirmation page | Unable to prove successful registration | Download and print immediately after submission |
| Sharing application number and password | Identity theft or fraudulent access | Keep credentials confidential |
| Selecting wrong exam city order | City not available; assigned to unfavourable centre | Research cities in your region carefully; choose 4 realistic options |
| Late fee payment causing session expiry | Incomplete application; no admit card issued | Do not wait until the last date; pay at least 2 days before deadline |
| Stage Timeline (Expected for 2027) | |
| Application form submitted | October to November 2026 (Session 1) |
| Correction window closes | November 2026 |
| City Intimation Slip released | January 2027 |
| Admit Card released | 3 days before exam |
| Exam held | Last week of January 2027 |
| Session 1 Result | February 2027 |

Q1. Can I apply for both Session 1 and Session 2 of JEE Main 2027? Yes. Appearing in both sessions is recommended since NTA takes the best score from either session for the final All India Rank. You must pay the application fee separately for each session.
Q2. Can I change my exam city after submitting the form? Exam city preference can be changed during the application correction window (open for 2 to 3 days after the registration deadline). After the correction window closes, city changes are not permitted. Note that NTA reserves the right to assign a different city from your preferences if the selected cities are full.
Q3. Is the JEE Main application fee refundable? No. The application fee is completely non-refundable under all circumstances, including withdrawal of application, exam cancellation, or category change.
Q4. What happens if I make an error in the form and the correction window has closed? If a critical error is discovered after the correction window, contact NTA at jeemain@nta.ac.in with supporting documents. NTA may consider corrections in specific cases but there is no guarantee. This is why filling the form correctly on the first attempt is essential.
Q5. Can I register for JEE Main 2027 without an Aadhaar card? Aadhaar is the primary mode of identity verification. Candidates without Aadhaar can use alternative government-issued photo IDs (Passport, Voter ID, Driving Licence) but must upload the document manually. Check the official 2027 brochure for the latest Aadhaar policy.
Q6. I applied for Session 1 but missed Session 2 registration. Can I still appear? No. Registration for each session has a separate window with a fixed deadline. Missing the Session 2 registration deadline means you cannot appear in Session 2 for that year.
