The JEE Main cutoff is one of the most searched pieces of information in the Indian engineering entrance ecosystem, and also one of the most misunderstood. Every year, lakhs of candidates confuse the NTA qualifying cutoff with the admission cutoff, leading to wrong decisions about JEE Advanced preparation and JoSAA counselling strategy.
This page covers both types of cutoffs in complete detail: the NTA qualifying cutoff (percentile released by NTA with the Session 2 result, determining JEE Advanced eligibility) and the JoSAA admission cutoff (institute and branch-wise closing ranks released during counselling, determining actual seat allotment). It also provides the official JEE Main 2026 cutoff data, a year-wise trend from 2022 to 2026, expected cutoff for 2027, and NIT and IIIT closing ranks from JoSAA 2025.
Official Data Note: The JEE Main 2026 qualifying cutoff was officially released by NTA on April 20, 2026, along with the Session 2 result at jeemain.nta.nic.in. All qualifying cutoff figures cited on this page are from that official NTA release. JoSAA 2025 closing ranks are from josaa.nic.in official data.
Visit the JEE Main Page for the complete exam guide covering dates, syllabus, eligibility, application process, and result.
Before looking at any number, it is essential to understand what kind of cutoff you are looking at.
| Type Released By When Released What it Determines | |||
| NTA Qualifying Cutoff | National Testing Agency (NTA) | With Session 2 result | Eligibility for JEE Advanced 2027 and JoSAA counselling participation |
| JoSAA Admission Cutoff | Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) | Round-wise during counselling | Actual seat allotment in a specific NIT, IIIT, or GFTI branch and category |
The single most important fact: Clearing the NTA qualifying cutoff does NOT guarantee a seat at any NIT or IIIT. It only makes you eligible to participate in JoSAA counselling. Securing an actual seat depends on your All India Rank and the specific closing rank for the branch and institute you choose.
Example from JEE Main 2026: The General category qualifying cutoff was 93.41 percentile. However, the JoSAA 2025 closing rank for NIT Trichy CSE (General, Other State) was approximately AIR 1449, which corresponds to roughly 99.8 percentile. A candidate at 93.41 percentile qualifies for JEE Advanced and JoSAA but will not secure a CSE seat at NIT Trichy.
The following category-wise qualifying percentiles were officially released by NTA on April 20, 2026, along with the JEE Main 2026 Paper 1 Session 2 result.

Trend Analysis:
The JEE Main 2027 qualifying cutoff will be released by NTA along with the Session 2 result in April 2027. The following projections are based on the five-year trend and the anticipated continued growth in JEE Main participation.
| Category 2026 Official Cutoff Expected 2027 Cutoff Range | ||
| General / UR | 93.4123549 | 93.5 to 95.0 |
| General - EWS | 82.4164528 | 83.0 to 85.0 |
| OBC-NCL | 80.9232583 | 81.5 to 83.5 |
| SC | 63.9172792 | 64.5 to 67.0 |
| ST | 52.0174712 | 53.0 to 55.0 |
What could push the 2027 cutoff higher: An increase in the number of registered candidates (which has been consistently rising), an easier-than-usual paper (which pushes more candidates above the benchmark), and improvements in coaching quality and early preparation adoption.
What could bring the 2027 cutoff slightly lower: A harder exam paper (which distributes scores more loosely at the top), or any changes to the exam format or syllabus.
These are projected ranges, not guarantees. The official 2027 cutoff will depend entirely on the performance of all candidates who appear and the normalisation methodology applied by NTA.
Candidates often want to know what marks they need to score to clear the cutoff or reach a specific rank. The following is an approximate guide based on JEE Main 2025 and 2026 data. Actual values vary every year based on paper difficulty and number of candidates.
| Approximate Marks (out of 300) Approximate Percentile (General) Approximate AIR (General) What You Can Target | |||
| 250 and above | 99.8 to 100 | Top 500 to 3000 | IIT top branches, NIT Trichy CSE |
| 220 to 250 | 99.2 to 99.8 | 3000 to 12000 | NIT Trichy/Warangal/Surathkal (all branches), Top IIITs |
| 190 to 220 | 98.0 to 99.2 | 12000 to 30000 | Tier 2 NITs (CSE), Good IIITs, GFTIs |
| 160 to 190 | 95.0 to 98.0 | 30000 to 65000 | Tier 2 NITs (ECE, EE), Tier 3 NITs (CSE), IIITs |
| 130 to 160 | 90.0 to 95.0 | 65000 to 1,10,000 | Lower NITs, GFTIs, some IIITs |
| 93 to 130 | 80.0 to 90.0 | 1,10,000 to 2,50,000 | Newer NITs, GFTIs (core branches) |
| Below 93 | Below 80 | Beyond 2,50,000 | Below qualifying cutoff; state colleges, private engineering |
Important Note: These ranges are approximate and based on 2025 to 2026 data with around 13 to 15 lakh unique candidates appearing. The actual relationship between marks and percentile changes every year. A score of 150 may correspond to 95 percentile in a difficult paper and only 90 percentile in an easier one.
The following closing ranks are from JoSAA 2025 Round 6 (final round) for the General category under Other State (OS) quota. These are the most relevant benchmark for candidates planning for JEE Main 2027.
| NIT CSE Closing Rank (2025) CSE Closing Rank (2024) | ||
| NIT Tiruchirappalli | 1449 | 1104 |
| NIT Karnataka Surathkal | 1827 | 2726 |
| NIT Warangal | 2409 | 2135 |
| NIT Rourkela | 3100 (approx.) | 2900 (approx.) |
| NIT Calicut | 5000 to 5500 | 4800 to 5200 |
To secure CSE at NIT Trichy, a General category candidate needs approximately AIR 1500 or better, which corresponds to roughly 99.85 to 99.90 percentile based on 2025 data.
| NIT ECE Closing Rank (2025) | |
| NIT Tiruchirappalli | 5500 to 6000 |
| NIT Warangal | 6000 to 7000 |
| NIT Karnataka Surathkal | 7000 to 8000 |
| NIT Calicut | 9000 to 11000 |
| NIT CSE Closing Rank (2025) | |
| NIT Allahabad (MNNIT) | 4000 to 5000 |
| NIT Durgapur | 6000 to 7000 |
| NIT Silchar | 7000 to 9000 |
| NIT Jaipur (MNIT) | 5500 to 7000 |
| NIT Patna | 8000 to 11000 |
| NIT CSE Closing Rank (2025) | |
| NIT Agartala | 14000 to 18000 |
| NIT Hamirpur | 15000 to 20000 |
| NIT Jalandhar | 10000 to 14000 |
| NIT Kurukshetra | 8000 to 12000 |
| IIIT Branch Closing Rank (2025) | ||
| IIIT Allahabad | IT | 6094 |
| IIIT Allahabad | ECE | 8050 |
| IIIT Gwalior | CSE | 9527 |
| IIIT Lucknow | CSE | 9580 |
| IIIT Lucknow | IT | 11416 |
| IIIT Hyderabad | CSE (B.Tech) | Highly competitive; check official JoSAA data |
| IIIT Delhi | CSE | Very competitive; NIT Tier 1 equivalent |
Note: JoSAA 2026 closing ranks will be published at josaa.nic.in during the counselling rounds expected in June 2027 for 2027 admissions. The 2025 data above is the best available reference for planning.
All 31 NITs reserve 50 percent of seats for Home State (HS) candidates and allocate the remaining 50 percent to Other State (OS) candidates. This has a significant impact on closing ranks.
| Institute Branch General (HS) Closing Rank General (OS) Closing Rank | |||
| NIT Tiruchirappalli | CSE | 4569 | 1449 |
| NIT Karnataka Surathkal | CSE | 2800 | 1827 |
| NIT Warangal | CSE | ~3500 | 2409 |
The Home State quota is generally less competitive (higher closing rank = more relaxed requirement) because it draws from a smaller pool of Home State candidates. A candidate from Tamil Nadu applying to NIT Trichy through Home State quota has a closing rank of 4569 compared to 1449 for Other State candidates.
This makes the Home State quota strategically important. Candidates with an AIR between 1500 and 5000 may secure CSE at NIT Trichy under Home State quota but not under Other State quota.
| NIT CSE Closing Rank (OBC-NCL, OS, 2025) | |
| NIT Tiruchirappalli | 1100 to 2200 |
| NIT Surathkal | 2251 |
| NIT Warangal | 3000 to 4000 |
| NIT CSE Closing Rank (SC, OS, 2025) | |
| NIT Tiruchirappalli | 1081 |
| NIT Surathkal | 917 |
| NIT Warangal | 1200 to 1500 |
Even within reserved categories, NIT Trichy and Surathkal CSE remain highly competitive. SC candidates need AIR below approximately 1100 to secure CSE at NIT Trichy, which still requires significant performance.
The NTA qualifying cutoff changes every year because it depends on several variables, none of which are under candidate control.
Total Number of Candidates Appearing: More candidates means the top 2,50,000 represent a smaller percentage of the total pool, which pushes the qualifying percentile upward. JEE Main 2026 saw 15.38 lakh unique candidates appear, the highest ever, and the cutoff reached a record high.
Exam Difficulty Across Shifts and Sessions: A more difficult paper distributes scores across a wider range, which can mean the 2,50,000th rank candidate has a relatively lower raw score. A comparatively easier paper concentrates scores at the top, requiring a higher percentile to be in the top 2,50,000.
NTA Score Normalisation: JEE Main is conducted in multiple shifts. NTA uses a percentile-based inter-session and inter-shift normalisation formula. The specific methodology means that raw marks do not directly translate to a fixed percentile without knowing the performance distribution in your specific shift.
Reservation Norms: The top 2,50,000 are selected category-wise following statutory reservation norms (OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, EWS 10%). This is why the General and EWS cutoffs are high while the ST cutoff is comparatively lower.
Misconception 1: Clearing the cutoff guarantees a seat at an NIT. Fact: The qualifying cutoff only makes you eligible for JoSAA counselling. Seat allotment depends on AIR and institute-specific closing ranks.
Misconception 2: The qualifying cutoff for SC/ST is low, so admission is easy for reserved categories. Fact: Reserved category candidates qualify for JEE Advanced at lower percentiles, but admission to top NIT branches still requires strong performance. NIT Trichy CSE (SC, OS) closed at approximately AIR 1081 in JoSAA 2025, which still requires exceptional preparation.
Misconception 3: A harder exam means a higher cutoff. Fact: The opposite is often true. A harder paper reduces the number of high scorers, so the 2,50,000th position falls at a lower raw score, potentially requiring a lower percentile to qualify. This is counterintuitive but mathematically accurate.
Misconception 4: Both Session 1 and Session 2 have separate cutoffs. Fact: NTA releases a single unified cutoff after Session 2, based on the best NTA Score across both sessions for each candidate.
Based on the five-year trend and JoSAA data, the following benchmarks help candidates set preparation targets.
| Target Required Percentile (General) Required Approximate Marks | ||
| Qualify for JEE Advanced | 93.5 to 95.0 | 125 to 140 |
| Any NIT seat (less popular branch) | 88 to 92 | 110 to 130 |
| NIT Tier 2 CSE (OS quota) | 97 to 98.5 | 160 to 185 |
| NIT Tier 1 CSE (OS quota) | 99.3 to 99.8 | 210 to 240 |
| NIT Trichy CSE specifically | 99.8+ | 240+ |

Q1. What is the JEE Main 2026 cutoff for the General category? The official qualifying cutoff released by NTA on April 20, 2026, for the General category is 93.4123549 percentile.
Q2. Is the qualifying cutoff the same as the NIT admission cutoff? No. The NTA qualifying cutoff (around 93 percentile for General) determines JEE Advanced eligibility and JoSAA participation. The NIT admission cutoff is the closing rank for a specific branch and institute through JoSAA, which can require 99.5 to 99.8 percentile for top branches.
Q3. If I score 93.41 percentile (exactly at the General cutoff), am I guaranteed a seat in JoSAA? You are eligible to participate in JoSAA counselling. However, whether you get a seat depends on your AIR and the institute and branch you choose. At 93.41 percentile, realistic options include newer NITs in core branches like Civil or Mechanical, and GFTIs.
Q4. How many candidates qualify in JEE Main every year? The top 2,50,000 unique candidates qualify for JEE Advanced each year. In 2026, the total qualified was 2,50,182 out of 15,38,468 who appeared.
Q5. What is a safe score for clearing the JEE Main 2027 cutoff? Based on the 2026 cutoff of 93.41 percentile and the upward trend, targeting 95 percentile for General category candidates provides a reasonable safety buffer. In approximate marks, this translates to around 140 to 155 out of 300 depending on paper difficulty.
Q6. Is there a subject-wise cutoff in JEE Main? The primary qualifying cutoff is based on the overall NTA Score (percentile). Some institutions have subject-wise minimum score requirements which are specified in their admission rules. Check the official JoSAA brochure for subject-wise conditions if applicable.
